Here's a little info on the Gensets. Pieces of junk. The Y899, if i got the number right. I remember the 99 part. Anyway, I paired it with one of our SD38-2's and not too long after that it developed a fuel leak from the fuel filter. I set the unit out. That unit and a few others were heading to Roseville and the two center windows were blanked over i believe with a metal plate at that time. Ours were delivered with wiper blades and non blanked center windows here in the Midwest. The Roseville units were passing through our area and, we gave them a "shakedown" run which is why i was told to mate it with my SD38. Eventually, we got our junksets the Y887 first then months later the rest followed. The 888, 889, 890, 891, 892, 893. Needless to say they are unreliable junksets. At one time there were three units mated to each other because all three had at least one issue the other didn't have. We've always had to continue using these units even with their reliability problems because their purchase was attached to a highway grant which, required them staying active or repay the grant back. Currently two might be heavy bad order in the diesel shop awaiting parts (my guess) and, the others are being assisted by SD40-2's and, two are actually mated to each other (probably the only units that have work consistently). Each of the engine pods cost $10,000 to replace. Each unit has had at least one pod changed a year. The looks are deceiving with locomotives. The gensets look great aesthetically but, mechanically they are shot. I'm assuming all the RP20 were built the same way minus a few minor things. If you ever model one the frame actually has a bow in it. When the fuel very is low the frame bows upward in the center and bows downward when full. Only the frame and trucks are original EMD. The stairs, fuel tank and, everything else are all either newly purchased or fabricated metal. Look for the number series of the units i gave you in the scrapyards soon because i think this year the grant ends and they can do what ever they want with them.

Hi Bob, yeah I live close to the Ohio Central RR line and I see LTEX on a few of their trains from time to time, so it's cool to see them still being used some where and not scrapped..
@@TriGogglin Oh, so true. With a little repair/updates, who knows how much time a unit may have. The B&LE used sd38's until they were in the their 4-5th decade.
Great post. Not the first time I 've seen vids of Larry's, but each time I see something new. That place must be bigger than I thought it was. Be safe !
Yeah I could not believe how big it actually was when I was there, would love to go back ad see what got rotated out and what new has shown up. Appreciate you watching..
Seeing videos of all the locomotives I saw in my childhood and where they are now is really sad! I've always wondered where all the CSX SD50s went and here they are. Resting and waiting to be scrapped. Really sad to not see these rebuilt like the old SD40s were. Thanks for sharing this train load of nostalgia!
The GP50's & SD50's weren't well liked by the railroads because the 645F3's were unreliable. The motors were pushed to the max on how much horsepower they could handle and literally shook themselves apart. This is why EMD debuted the 710 series with the GP60's & SD60's being introduced.Alot of them were just outright sold or scrapped because nobody wanted to deal with them. This was just the second phase of EMD's reputation starting to go downward because previously some railroads dealt with units such as the SD45's,SDP45's,SD45T-2's,SD45-2's, FP45's,and SD45M's which continously had nothing but problems with crankshafts and why only most of the SD45's were rebuilt. As for the GP50's & SD50's,all that had to be done was interchange power assemblies from any 645E3's on the 645F3's to derate the horsepower or simply change the settings on the Woodward governors. But,this hardly happened on any of those units. Interesting enough, the six MK5000C's from Southern Pacific that have been with Utah Railway for years now were rebuilt as M5000-3's with 645F3's but they were modified with 645E3 power assemblies.Their Caterpillar 3612 prime motors are becoming outdated on resources and expensive so they resorted to EMD rebuilds which were better on costs and longevity.
Thank you for this. I recently became a Youngstown resident and one of the things I like to explore is rail routes, to which there are many routes and former paths going in many directions in the region...
Very welcome, glad you enjoyed it. Thus place is amazing. As I have only been to Youngstown a few times myself. I have caught a few trains thru there and you are right. A lot of different rail paths to choose from.. happy exploring up there. Appreciate you watching
Thank you very much Anthony, its nice knowing that it is appreciated and makes me wanna find more great stuff like this. I just put out a video on the rebuild shop ysrd in Huntington WV. There a lot of power sitting there as well, nut nothing like this.
On google earth the name of the business listed right at the building taking the locos apart says Larry’s truck and electric (LTE). I wonder if they are associated with the leasing company? Glad that bridge was there so you could get those overhead shots. Amazing place.
What an amazing collection of railroad history. Some really amazing stuff in there. Thanks for sharing this Pappy! Really enjoyed this peek into the past.

Not stagnant. They’re pretty successful with the business 😉 I was their family photographer a few years back and we did the session in both yards. Wonderful people

I can't imagine the horrible shape of those NA EMD 567 & roots scavenged early 645 prime movers are, after sitting all these decades (from the looks of all the trees and bramble growing up around them) with no exhaust covers and the accumulation of rain water, snow, dust, etc,etc getting down into the exhaust plenums and ports. I need to find out where our PB Class, used in the local steel mill, that were rebuilt some where in that area. Also amazing to see how many engines are in storage, or been withdrawn due to the down turn in coal sale, mining and exports. Early last year here, many engines didn't sit around for to long as they were cut up and sold for scrap.
It never stops to surprise me how the Class1 carriers can get rid of some fairly new and decent locomotives. Locomotives, that if it was my railroad, would still be in service or stored serviceable. Alot of the GE stuff I would put out to pasture, but the GM stuff is worth keeping. Plate C
The more units that are on the rosters includes more taxes that have to be paid. When there is more than enough units, until freight traffic increases or there's a power shortage, then they're not needed and will be put in storage. Or when units become outdated they also will be put in storage or scrapped if it means more profit in return than keeping some and rebuilding them. Many EMD units within the last thirty years aren't really worth the rebuilds except for the diesel motors because EMD's warranty went downhill. GE units have better traction motors while obtaining stronger tractive effort which makes them great pullers. EMD slacked on this thanks to Siemens and their unreliable traction motors. However, traction motors from almost any EMD unit do load quickly which gives them the advantage of accelerating faster and great for switching, but they aren't useful when it comes to serious tonnage. EMD has higher dynamic braking power ratings compared to GE but GE has always been more technologically advanced than EMD while EMD always provided units and diesel motors that will keep running no matter what, one of these is what keeps the railroads interested. EPA regulations killed EMD because their 567's, 645's, 710's are two stroke and produce higher emissions. Quite obviously there is still thousands of units out there but further production was discontinued and CAT/PRLX ruined the reputation by trying to make more failed Caterpillar rebuilds. There's reasons why more EMD units keep ending up in storage from Class 1 usage with lesser rebuilds being invested while GE units are everywhere and rebuilds are starting to become more common, espiecally since Wabtec now owns General Electric. The last greatest EMD units were the GP40-2's & SD40-2's which have continued to outlive many other units.
@@Slim_Slid I thought the reason some older units remain in use because of their size/weight or number of wheels per truck. On the CCET (the line that you see Jawtooth cover in his haunt), they use one specific very old unit because of the smaller footprint of its trucks? [Note: am Not power knowledgeable at all]
@@tehpw7574 The main reason why most older EMD units, like GP40-2's & SD40-2's for example, have survived and retained within railroads is because of reliability alone and not really anything to do with sizing or weight. Nowadays it's becoming about what units are cheaper to maintain while trying to comply for more emissions regulations. Any units that are four or six axled will be used for what it's worth, the number of axles doesn't mean anything. However,California does add taxing to any railroads for the number of axles each unit has individually. That's why it's more common in alot of regions out there to see more four axled units versus six axled units. Units that are just passing through the state aren't really added to that list,it usually applies to units that stay within the area so to speak. The reason why four axled units have been removed from heavy duty usage for class one railroads and resorted to switching and local jobs is because trains became longer and heavier, simply put. SW1000's,SW1500's,and MP15's were replaced by GP38-2's and GP40-2's for the most part because those switchers are lighter in weight and don't obtain braking capacity for serious tonnage that obviously heavier units do. Class one railroads are also starting to prefer heavier and modern units for certain local jobs, depending on locations and industries, because they want to make local manifests longer and heavier while just using outdated EMD units which have a hard time doing the work. It'll get to the point where SD40-2's,SD60's & SD60M's,SD70M's,or even C44-9W's and ES44AC's will be highly preferred for heavy local consists on top of switching. The main factor is traction motors as well. DC traction motors always will be great for switching, but anything correlating to serious tonnage requires AC traction motors. EMD units are awesome at switching and always have been while GE units can be incredible at pulling and moving quickly. It all comes down to what railroad and how things are done, nothing is the same.
Wow, never knew that of a place like that was in Ohio. Did you just drive in the Lordstown yard like that with no problems or had to ask for permission? Thanks for creating this video!
Just drove In, they say the gate is hit or miss if its open or not, and there are other businesses in there. Didnt see any no trespassing signs. Appreciate you watching.
I'm not aware of any caboose scrap yards. Most, if they havnt been snapped already, have been put in museums or on display in towns across America. I've done two videos at the end of each year of the ones I found,. You should check them out, their called road side finds 2020 and 2021
Hello Anthony, im not 100 percent sure what happens to any of them, and I'm kinda far from this location, so not able to check in on them from time to time, but if I do find out, I'll post it up.
Steam locomotives you can rebuild forever and at the time of their scrapping in the late fifties there were many that had served 40 or 50 years plus. Many of the first generation diesels barely lasted up to their lease expiration. When you see 70 plus year working everyday at some short line or industrial Railroad and then you see all of these great big haulers that are 50 years newer sitting in a graveyard. Of course the older units is nice and simple and you can keep them working forever. It is a whole lot less work and expense to keep something in serviceable condition than to fix it after it's been derelict for a while.
@@dnoc4973 thanks, the Mcdonald location you can walk across the bridge to see the over head view, and the lords town location is hit or miss if the gate is open, there are other businesses in there.. appreciate you watching

Wow now that is cool to know, thank you for telling me this, glad you recognized it here, maybe the other is still operating some where, thank you for watching and the comment
Not sure from what, but I know their cut down from pre-existing engines just not sure or which ones, I have been in live chats that they had talked about that but I can't remember what engine is what lol they need simple names like cars have, then I'd be better at it.
Hello Jerry, that is a great question and the easiest answer I can give you is, A slug is used to increase adhesive weight, allowing full power to be applied at a lower speed, thus allowing a higher maximum tractive effort. There is no engine in them, mostly weighted with ballast like concrete, and they get all thier power from the engine they are connected to. They are used in yards for switching operations. Hope that helps. Really appreciate you watching.
Slugs are units,or units that have been chopped down, that have their generators disconnected and/or removed but they still retain traction motors, and diesel motors to keep weight equal. They have to be coupled to an actual powered unit in order to work because they also borrow power from the actual unit. B units are units that have both generators and diesel motors in operation correlated to traction motors but they don't have cabs and are always trailing units with any kind of power. As for the slugs, some of them do get the diesel motors removed with concrete or ballast blocks put on the frames to retain weight but that usually doesn't happen,it's more common on units that have been chopped down as slugs.Any units as slugs that retain their full bodies and cabs still have control stands and can be used as an actual unit depending on direction only if it's coupled to any powered unit. Union Pacific did this to the six SD38-2's that came from Southern Pacific which have been slugs for many years now. There was also slugs such as the B23-7's and B30-7's which became CCRCL units from Union Pacific but they had the traction motors, control stands, and fuel tanks removed. Many of them were formerly Missouri Pacific and Southern Pacific/SSW. The purpose of them was having remote control technology and thus being used when they're coupled to powered units. Almost all of them as of mid last year are being scrapped mainly because the fuel tanks being removed but retaining their motors caused stress on the frames therefore making them weak. With the Nessex updates (SD40N's,GP40N's,GP38N's etc) on older EMD units from Union Pacific which also grants them RCL capabilities the rusty CCRCL units are deemed useless.
When I went, McDonald's was heavily posted, no trespassing so u stayed on the bridge, but lordstown was not, only said protected by security cameras, it is a gated property but gate was wide open with traffic in and out, so It may depend on day or time of day if its closed or not. Appreciate you watching.

Wow ! That was truly Epic seeing all those locomotives and slugs.. what a great find
I had the same excitement, It was awesome in person thats for sure. Thank you for watching
Very welcome, I was amazed at this sight, I seen things in there I never knew existed. Some will be parted out, but sadly some will be scrapped
This was just the second phase of EMD's reputation starting to go downward because previously some railroads dealt with units such as the SD45's,SDP45's,SD45T-2's,SD45-2's,
FP45's,and SD45M's which continously had nothing but problems with crankshafts and why only most of the SD45's were rebuilt.

Thank you So Much for recording this video and taking us along!! I had no idea that LTEX and SO Many units were there at the commerce center, even though I was aware that the Commerce Center, existed.
I guess we know what UP (and a few other roads) really think of their politically correct "gensets", and now I know where a bunch of them "disappeared" to. lol : )
Really sad to see so many of those EMD's going to waste & rust in the trees at the beginning of your video... and worse, that they (apparently) never even bothered to cover the exhaust stacks on all those naturally aspirated units that you "shot" from the bridge.
Really sad! Definitely a mecca though, for EMD fans, especially.

Hey Arty, yeah I think this crazy economy is killing our trains for sure. Thanks for watching.
Be interesting to know what the cheapest and most expensive engine was and the average cost between all of them.
Yes that would be interesting facts for sure. Also wonder if he'd sell random parts to the average guy off the street.
It never stops to surprise me how the Class1 carriers can get rid of some fairly new and decent locomotives. Locomotives, that if it was my railroad, would still be in service or stored serviceable. Alot of the GE stuff I would put out to pasture, but the GM stuff is worth keeping.
Plate C
Yeah we will probably never know the logic behind big corporate. And the money waste that they do.
[Note: am Not power knowledgeable at all]
Thats a good point. And makes a lot of sense to me..
@@tehpw7574
The main reason why most older EMD units, like GP40-2's & SD40-2's for example, have survived and retained within railroads is because of reliability alone and not really anything to do with sizing or weight.
I love EX Amtrak F40PHR unit 404.

@@TriGogglin OK. I really want those EX Amtrak F40'S to be safe from scrap.
There are quite a few in this line up that look amazing. Maybe they will run again. Be cool to see that.

Not sure from what, but I know their cut down from pre-existing engines just not sure or which ones, I have been in live chats that they had talked about that but I can't remember what engine is what lol they need simple names like cars have, then I'd be better at it.
those trucks don't look like FM trucks. they look like Baldwin trucks.
I also see EX Amtrak F40PH unit 344.
I seen a few in there that I thought were long gone.
@@TriGogglin Even unit 369???
Are the Amtrak p40dc’s still there
Not sure, I havnt been back up recently yo check, sounds like I need to take another road trip, appreciate you watching
I think this was the place that Loco was rebuilt.
That is cool, I know this place does a lot of that then leases them out, or sells them off.. thanks for watching
F40 344 still around I see.
Quite a bit still around, there was an OC engine at McDonald's that I didn't get to video, that I havnt seen for a while. Thank you for watching
What's the purpose of the slugs??? I hope I said that correct.
Is there any for sale, with self aligning couplers?
That I don't know. The stuff stored here is owned by LTEX Larry's truck and electric. You could look them up and maybe talk to some one there.
Appreciate the info👍🏼
Is that public access or do you have a pass or something?
When I went, McDonald's was heavily posted, no trespassing so u stayed on the bridge, but lordstown was not, only said protected by security cameras, it is a gated property but gate was wide open with traffic in and out, so It may depend on day or time of day if its closed or not. Appreciate you watching.
This is what happens when your model railroading gets out of hand. It starts with a Lionel train set around the Christmas tree, then it just gets out of hand after that.😁😁😁
Lol, I don't have that problem,(wish i did) but i know a lot of people who do... 🤣 appreciate you watching and commenting
