Nearly 200 stored Locomotives at PRLX: Raceland, KY! Former CSX, NS, Santa Fe, and More!

- In this, the second location I've managed to fly the drone with a series of stored locomotives, we are overhead at the Progress Rail shops, in Raceland, Kentucky. Home to more EMD's in one place than I've ever seen in my life, there were somewhere around 175 locomotives here; with Norfolk Southern and CSXT being the main two road names, but a handful of former Santa Fe SD75M's, and other odd-ball names seen as well.
The first flight was shot at the west end shops, where the fleet of former Conrail SD60 standard cab's and SD60I's CSX owned are stored, as well as former Conrail SD70's and a handful of SD70M's from Norfolk Southern. You'll also find most of the former CSX SD70M's here, which were captive in the Bone Valley in Florida for most of their service life. The second flight from a couple days later shows the east end shops, where a majority of the locomotives were at. This included a handful of Norfolk Southern SD40's, a couple of CSX SD70ACe's, and the rest of the SD70M fleet, as well as the former Conrail SD80MAC's. Quite a sight to see this much horsepower sitting in one place, especially when you live in places where these locomotives were once the workhorses of the fleet!

Many thanks everyone for the support and kind words! I’m seeing a lot of people asking where the music comes from. I get all the music for these videos from the website Epidemic SoundCloud. They have a huge selection of royalty free music, for a low monthly fee!
This is a literal GOLD MINE of old SD70s.
It brings a tear to my eye to see so many EMDs out of service in storage! I can remember seeing them on the road when they were brand new!!! I feel old!!😞😢
Just think of the millions of dollars represented there by all those locos. WOW!!!!
and also the possible billions of dollars of products that were being moved when these units were working
and each one represents several people without a job...

Well, Pixar has made "Cars" and "Planes". I think it would be great if they made "Trains." They could begin the story from this yard!
That's a great idea!
prlx recycles the engines and sells or leases them all over the world
In 1954 and 1955, near the end of steam operation, I made several visits to the engine terminals of the New York Central at Jackson, Michigan and Toledo, Ohio. There were long lines of steam locomotives in storage at both locations; a few were returned to service, but most of them eventually went to the torch. Back then, diesels seemed invincible; I never thought they would meet the same fate.
Pretty soon, diesel locomotives will be a thing of the past just like the machines they replaced. Electric locomotives will outlast steam and diesel in active service within the entire lifetime of the very existence of trains!
Electric will never completely overtake diesel. Diesel locomotives are already very efficient as they are. Electric locomotives will most definitely come into existence at some point, but they will most likely have to be paired with a diesel.
@@calebpatterson5300 20 years from now, they might be a thing of the past. Never say never!
@Cnw#8701 very true. We’ll have to see how it plays out
That’s a big facility. Thanks for sharing 👍
Wow! Interesting flyover. Thx...
Very well done, nice flying too.
Amazing Catches there Joe!
Excellent video !!!
Terrific catches! So many amazing locomotives including the Spirit in storage.
To help you guys out with the music, the first part of the video is a track by " Gabriel Kelley called " Dontcha Wanna" its the Instrumental version of this track, the 2nd track @ 03.08 is Northside - track called " SunRise hope this helps you all out, Great Video Joe...love looking at the stored loco's

Great yet sad video! Gives new meaning to rail execs as "do you know where your locomotives are?"
Pretty crazy to look at. I'm seeing a number of NS units I saw while they were on the roster, remembering when and where I saw them.
Excellent video and music, enjoyed it very much, Thanks! ;-)
Sad seeing the SD40s, SD60s, SD70s and SD80s just slowly withering away with their horns removed. Great video
Awesome catches Joe! RIP to the CSX SD60's and the NS SD70's. :(
Those are CSX SD50-3s. CSX only has 8 active on roster these here at Raceland are the rest
Approach-Signal Productions no they’re not, the SD60 series are all in the 8700 series. In fact for the SD50-3’s, I was told 4 are left in service while the remaining 12 are in storage.
Man its so cool and so sad at the same time seeing all of that power in one place. What drone do you use?
I've got a Mavic Air 2.
Kind of reminds me of the plane storage yard out in Mojave, CA.
And probably the same reason for the train engines as it is for the planes, service duty life. With planes the decision is made on the number of pressure- depressurization cycles the plane makes where the problems with metal fatigue start to set in. Fuel efficiencies play a factor as well for both. There is a logical reason they are there and is no conspiracy. Yes, I have seen what you refer to and to the frugal sort seems like a waste but when dollars start not adding up in business there is no emotion about any of it. One day one of us might be flying on one of these since melted down for a different life all shiny and new. The same with the rail engines perhaps. I don't know if they will be totally scrapped and made into new form models or refurbished as someone noted. I doubt any will be as is paper weights or lawn ornaments though. Those are some big diesel engines that may be repurposed for temporary emergency use to pump water perhaps for ones in better shape. A deeper dive into what happens there would be interesting as well as just the optics.
Can you imagine walking around there? Would feel like I died and went to heaven.
Hell yeah, even got out my harmonica and played along. Wish these fit our load gauge in Australia.
Beautiful video and the music was perfect.
I was an engineer for 36 years, Nov. '74 to Jan 2011. It breaks my heart to see absolutely good EMD engines going to waste.
Here too. 39 years. I hated the GE’s. Those EMD’s would get down and “dig fer’taters” at 3 mph with a tonnage coal train.
@@nc4tn Thank you for your kind reply. I can't stand these techno turds. I cursed every mile I went running those P42's. Give me Dash 2's any day. I even miss running ALCo's believe it or not.
I hate to be that guy,but EMD slowly kept going downhill on production with anything else they manufactured after the GP40-2's & SD40-2's.
First and foremost,GE has incredible dynamic braking compared to EMD while also having stronger traction motors which are also far more reliable.
Nowadays if you want to pull a consist with serious tonnage, espiecally on a grade, then GE power is the way to go.
However EMD has retained the advantage of having traction motors that load up much quicker if something needs to be moved and ready to go,even though they don't last as long or have as much traction effort as the GE units.
Thankfully for the durable MP15DC's & MP15AC's,EMD is the way to do it when it comes to any sort of switching which GE units aren't always that great for.
Other than all this the EMD 567,645,and 710 series motors will outlast any GE 7HDL that damage turbochargers and crankshafts every soo often it seems.
Regardless,GE has become what EMD was in the past, that's just as how it is.
Once AC traction came out, then the four stroke 7FDL's & 7HDL's,and more powerful traction motors GE already had overthrown EMD in the long run.
Even though EMD's two stroke prime motors have been the most reliable they are thirsty on fuel compared to GE and thanks to EPA standards they aren't quite compliant to modern restrictions.
That’s like a half mile from my house. A lot of those have been sitting there for a while.
I may have seen one of those faded War Bonnet locomotives in my area back during the summer of 2014. There was a Sante Fe locomotive as part of a consist that sat parked for about 24 hours. I have a picture. Northern Indiana.
Greetings from the Ohio Porters. I spent a lot of time there at Raceland, at my uncle’s house. We caught some of those engines up in Kenova a while back. What a train graveyard! Hate to see those there just wasting away and not being used. When did you take this footage? We gotta head back down there! Thanks for sharing! 🥰🤩😎🇺🇸
Looks like mostly six axle EMD’s. Sad. Thanks for sharing 😎
In this state of condition what would these units sell for?
I would like to ask a question what do they do with all those locomotives do they fix them up and restore them for service or do they scrap them
I think this may be what heaven looks like!
I like the music used in this video. What were they?
This explains why 90% of the locomotives rolling by me on CSX are now ET44AHs...
Tru. But where I railfan it's more like 60%
Nice video! How were you able to get access to the shops? I would like to go sometime
In the UK most of the diesel loco's have the EMD engines fitted instead of there old British Made lumps as the EMD has more power and easier to maintain with reliability.
I once had NS 7227 as a leader which was ex CSX 4601, ex CR 4125 and the engineers screen said "Conrail 7227" lol
Very fine clarity in your drone camera. Thank you. May I ask what type of drone and video camera you are using?
Drone is a Mavic Air 2; and it can shoot up to 4k at 30 fps.
Irvine-Ravenna KY has the same thing...Miles of old railroad cars sitting on the railroad tracks. Take KY 52 and 1571 above Ravenna and see the same thing.
Well, that was depressing. 😔
How long would it take to rebuild one of these ? 6 months ?
thank you
Great video and fine choice of music to go with it. Two thumbs up, bro! 👍👍
One wonders how many of these locos are destined for scrap... I pray not many but my gut tells me that's not going to be the case. Sad.. 😞
just like where the hundred+ ge engines came from...
Good video
A lot of traction motors too!
je ne vois plus un seul klaxon sur les toits...déjà vendu sur Ebay?
I scanned down through the replies awhile looking for someone mentioning all of that diesel power sitting in the weather at the very beginning of the video. At 0:30 look at the bottom of the screen. Do you know what those are?
Are they operable? What is the reason for them being there?
When was this taken? I'd of thought all the SD80MAC's were scrapped by now.
Cool!
where did you get the music that starts at 6:30
Do they have any for sale with self aligning couplers.
When the coal traffic went away, the need for a lot of locomotives went away. CSX barely operates the old C&O mainline and the once crowded Grafton sub of the old B&O.

Notice these are all road engines. Wheelbase is too long for yard & industrial work. Plus their big turbo engines are inefficient for low speed switching. There is no market for them.
I do suspect Progress Rail is working on plans to convert them to straight electrics if the nation ever gets around to building nukes to power them.
@@josephmitchell8343 maybe there just is a lull in rail freight right now across the board... mainly due to covid... now perhaps when the virus is "contained", traffic will pick back up

I'm guessing that there isn't a huge market for used locomotives. How many will be rebuilt and upgraded? Or scrapped or turned into slugs?
Hi bro, where in America are these engines, I wanted to buy two of them, watching from Jamaica west Indies !!

Amazing that not too long ago those NS SD70s and SD80MACs had a major rebuild in their future planned and ready to go. Ironic.
Politicians are corrupt & incompetent. We should not give them power over our economy to pick winners & losers.
The SD70's are actually still around on Norfolk Southern because they were rebuilt into the SD70ACC's.
The SD80MAC's were getting old,
expensive to maintain, and EPA restrictions were making it harder.
Aside from tier four compliance,
resourcing for parts on the SD80MAC's became difficult because those were the only units with 20-710-G3B EC's.
Norfolk Southern never had any rebuild plans for them, they just wanted to retire them completely. All of them were sold to PRLX and then the units with the highest hours/mileage were scrapped,so only a handful of them remain.Six of them were purchased by Canadian Pacific as parts donors for the SD70ACU program,
currently only two of them are left.
@@Slim_Slid 52 of the 80 SD70s were rebuilt into SD70ACCs. The rest went with the rest of the DC SD70 series (save for 46 M-2s) in the great PSR purge and the ACC program terminated.
I was employed by the OEM traction manufacturer and we bid on the replacement hardware for the ACU program. (We lost to MELCO.) Following the SD70ACU rebuilds there was going to be a SD80ACU program. The 20-cylinder 710 is common in marine and stationary applications and power assemblies are the same as the 16-cylinder variant. Instead the program was axed and 66 SD70ACUs disposed.
Now NS has acquired 80 AC44/Dash-9s second hand. I think we can see which way the NS power desk is leaning.
@@maestromecanico597
I know about the SD80MAC's as well as the EMD 710 series, regardless it wasn't going to happen because of what was mentioned including the part about EPA standards and tier four compliance.
Norfolk Southern purchased the SD9043MAC's dirt cheap from Union Pacific because certain amounts of them had cracks or tears in the frames.
Out of the 110 units that were rebuilt as SD70ACU's,only 45 remain on the roster as the others went to PRLX and currently are being scrapped. They had better electronics from Mitsubishi than what Simens originally built for them.
The days of EMD units is slowly being phased out,the majority of them are old and becoming costly to maintain.
GE builds better and stronger traction motors with more reliability and traction effort, not to mention more fuel efficiency because of the four stroke 7HDL's compared to EMD's 710 series.
If EMD had switched to four stroke motors much sooner and not screwed up they would've remained at a decent pace within the market. The SD90MAC's with the 265H's and SD70AH-T4's with the 1010J's were the biggest failures.
EMD hasn't had any solid results for years and have been slowly going downhill with any other units they've manufactured after the GP40-2's & SD40-2's.One of the main issues with modern EMD units is dynamic braking which on the other hand GE has been incredible about and kept winning.
However,EMD has retained their notoriety of having traction motors that load much quicker including reliable diesel motors that seem to last much longer than the locomotives themselves.
At this point CAT/EMD should just stick with marine apparatus and do business in other countries with little to no EPA restrictions and lesser budgets.
When Caterpillar became EMD's & PRLX's parent company, they were in the exact same scenario with the EPA and that's why on their part they had to discontinue building OTR truck engines.
I would like to point out that besides the GP40-2's & SD40-2's the MP15DC's & MP15AC's will be around for awhile as they are awesome for road switching.
Besides all of this GE is the way to go nowadays,EMD has practically been dead for almost twenty years.
What's going on with those 75's?
Everything that made NS fun.
Sad to see so many ex Conrail SD's in this group, including the Cadillacs, the SD-80 MAC's. The thing that is confounding is to see Canadian Pacific buying up ex UP SD90's and having them rebuilt to SD70ACU's, which is what Norfolk Southern pioneered the railroad industry in. Always thought the SD-80's would have been rebuilt to SD80ACU's, but then came along Harrison's PSR, which has effectively destroyed the NS we once knew....
So thats why NS is dumping ACUs? Also, why did CP grab some SD80s? Parts?
Looks like all the 80MACs are there!
Well now I know where the CSX ACe’s went
So, why are these locomotives here? For servicing or dismantlement?
What’s the song called at 4:43
I saw a few those units ivs seen in person like ex ns 2577 7219 and 7220
What appears to be about a 100 or so GE prime movers in rows at beginning of video, talk about having spare parts
From the looks of it (just a thought) the railroads are paying to have them stored (just a thought). After a refit then sent back out as a lease unit or back to the owner.
Where's the address for this I'm thinking of visiting sometime
I wonder if the emd' SD-80 MAC'S THERE ?
The Old Soldiers came to rest. Sad to see. All because of PSR. I even seen the old SD 80 Mac's from NS. 5000 hp Monsters.
I see a train going by. The locomotive must be thinking "Dang! This might be where I am going to end up in a few years.".
Looks like all the SD80 MACs are there too. It’s very depressing to see them all derelict like that!! I remember when they were brand new state of the art premium power!!! Much better than the GE junk running today!!!
I love EMD locos but you can't deny GE is on top for a reason. I've asked a CSX engineer what he prefers and he told me GEVOs, they'll out pull an EMD any day of the week
Every engineer I spoke to tells me they prefer ge over emd. So it seems to be the case that GE today is better.
They say the same shit about Ford trucks..... They pull better than any other brand of pickup.......... but cough cough those ecobombs powderchokes and tritons are a different story.
I remember seeing them outside the engine house at Cresson. Still in Conrail paint.
@@brandedmcgowan9414 Ecobombs 💀🤣🤣 They are basically a ticking time bomb. It just depends how long you can keep the time bomb running before it blows.

Currently SD70ACu's are being sold to Progress.
Do not try to make sense of what you see, this is a part of meeting investor expectations and not long term sustainability. Currently we are experiencing higher then average failure rates, catastrophic prime mover failures etc. Yes you can run more with less but it takes a toll. If you read the Q1 earnings report just put out and read all the way through you will see how "locomotive rationalization" plays a part. Basically NS is not performing organically as solid as it appears. Sales of assets such as locomotives continue to help driver the numbers. The only issue is how long can they keep that up. And if the end of rationalization happens to come at the same time as a dip in the economy we could see a rapid loss in investor confidence. But in the world of hedge funds, they will quickly move on leaving NS and other railroads in a compromised position.
In the meantime we keep trying to run trains with less then we had yesterday. . .
Whats the name of the soundtrack?
Aren’t these up for lease/sale
Pretty soon all the class 1 railroads are going to be boring to watch because all the locomotives will all look a like
Thanks for sharing. The satellite image in Google doesn't show anything like this! Just an empty yard for the most part. I wonder when the locomotives started accumulating.
A couple of years back, I saw a LONG line of locomotives, parked nose to tail,, southeast of Tucson Arizona. I’ve wondered why, ever since.🤷🏼♂️
If it was off I-10, I know Union Pacific has about 300 units sitting parked on like 3 miles worth of track back to back. Union Pacific claims they still maintain all of them and that they use them as needed.
@@jakepeterson3126 that would be the location. Thanks for clearing that up.
Many many more Michigan Upper peninsula.
I found them at that particular place: Raceland, Kentucky. I've seen the same locomotives.
Looking on Google Earth there are not many engines sitting around, but the image date is in 2015 and a lot can happen in 7 years. These clusters of engines seem to pop up from time-to-time and place-to-place and then, sometime later, they're all gone. There was or is a large collection in Thomaston, GA and there was a large collection of engines in the desert in Arizona but that's all gone now.
6:38 second and third row all the way down are v16 engines, most of them new looking. Would love to buy one,💪✌️🚂

What is PRLX?
And now NS is hurting for power, scrounging up whatever they can find. Sheer genius!
No not really NS has an excess amount of motive power and is cutting them up for scrap on site in Decatur
@@JohnSmith-fy1nh Oh yes they are! They're keeping foreign power on their own rails for as long as possible (and accruing horsepower hours owed) because they stupidly retired too many of their own locomotives.
