I've got a Vango F10 Helium UL2 which meets all the requirements you listed for a tent (it can pitch outer first, but I generally pitch both together), but it has a bit of a disadvantage in not being freestanding
*_I like the 3F UL Gear Zhengtu 2 tent that you reviewed, in my opinion it is highly recommended for solo camping or ultralight camping. Greetings, I am Rudy Outdoor Tutorial_*
Try Zephyros Compact 2 Tent. I tried it both in the summer and winter (-4 degrees). It lasted 2 x strong summer storms in the Alps as well. I think it is underrated tent. It is very light 1.8kg, packs very small as well! Thick all the boxes, I only noticed 2 small issues to be honest. 1 - it is low, so you cannot seat in it comfortably if you are tall, but it has plenty of space for 1 man and all the gear you need. It sleeps 2 men, but then condensation may occur despite 2 side vents), so it is spacious, but low; 2 - despite 2 doors, there is very limited area between the tent and the outer skin, and if you wish to use it while it rains to make a cup of tea etc, your movements are restricted. But I am 6 foot tall, so it doesn't help.
Have a look at the onetigris back woods bungalow - single skin but May be fine for 3 seasons. I have one and used it and it opens along the side with an awning .
hilleberg akto - I used most of your criterion. (I also figured I can only afford one tent so the higher price wasnt a factor, most cheaper tents leak or fail at higher level/windy camps) if you dont go above treeline, any tent will do.
I found my perfect tent finally - Vaude Space Seamless 1-2p. Flysheet and inner pitch together with pole sleeves on the inner so you can also pitch inner only. A bit expensive, but it's great
@@bradjones2924 It took me forever to find. There are some things I don't like about it (e.g. the pole sleeves are not as smooth as Hilleberg poles sleeves, but that's because of the velcro attachment for the flysheet to the inner), but I don't think I will find a better tent for me

I bought a 'Durston x mid 1p solid' and had it shipped over from the US, its the full version with heavy inner for UK weather "solid" and I've just used it along the Hadrians Wall Way for the last 5 days. Under 1kg decent vestibules 2 side doors. 4pegs and 2 trekking Poles gets it up in under a minute outer first. No need for guy lines even in the wind. They do a 2 person one but I don't know if that comes as the solid version with the full inner. The pro version is dcf and will have condensation issues and is about £600 but it's less than 500 grams. My xmid 1p solid cost me $310 including shipping about £250. I get a 25" wide pad in with 12" to spare at either end. My tent search is literally over thanks to this tent.
Pretty much nailed my perfect tent list. I would add a decent sized vestibule which wasn't too open to the elements (like front opening tents seem to be) and a sub 1.5kg weight for multi-day hikes. PS It's a bab but don't tell my Notts mates I said it 😁
nice one man but i dont like the pitch inner first as you get wet in the rain 2 doors always better for 2 , for 2 i would go with the 3ful gear taiji 2 best tent ever ,nice honest review
Have you found your perfect tent yet... What do you think to double skin trekking pole tents. I'd suggest the Asta Gear Yun Chuan tent. Either the 1 or the 2, the pitch size is pretty big, especially in the 2 and there isn't that much of a weight difference between the 1 and the 2 but if you need a slightly smaller pitch size then the 1 will still offer you the space you need I think. I'd love to see a review of the 1p 4 season. Cheers.

I love this feature but my friends just think I'm a tent nerd... Which apparently is true ‼️
I recently found a great tent which I imported from the USA called a Gazelle T4 hub tent. 90 second pitch or pack 2.4 X 2.4 footprint but standing height and the walls bow out rather than in. It like the TARDIS of tents... Seemingly bigger on the inside... It's for car camping and it's a little bulky but from a design and function point of view it is very close to the perfect tent... Except for the stupid triangular doors... Which are an irritating trip hazard... It's funny that even amongst my many tents, you developed favourite for certain situations.
Nordisk Telemark 2 LW fits your bill. I've had mine ages its a fantastic tent, pitches in about 2 minutes. I've modded mine by replacing corner poles with carbon, stiched the pole pockets and made a footprint from tyvek, other than that it's great, space is palatial for one.
Looks really good (I have a Lanshan 2) however I've been looking for a tent for Iceland to replace my old and decrepit MSR for strong winds and I'm going for the Sierra Designs Meteor 2 (comes in green) which is about the same weight (2,040g), DAC poles, steep walls for more useable space and has double side entry / exit. However best of all it's an amazing price (£222) for a tent wind tunnel tested to 90 kph (in Munich). Note that they designed this tent for Europe not the USA.
If you can find one, check out the Coleman Avior X2 Exponent tent. Granted it's .45 over your preferred weight limit but I bought one of these over a decade ago after much research, and I still use it today. It's not my perfect tent, but it would be if it were made in army olive green. Fits perfectly in the base of my Karrimor SF Sabre 100. It's 2 man (1 man really), has a vestibule door and full length side door. Outer pitch first or all in one pitch. Can't be bothered with the tent that's fine, no need to pitch it up, just use it as a basha as piles fit through the fly not the tent. Vestibule has an attached/ removable floor too. Sit in your tent and cook out of it even with a Bergen, shoes, wet gear in there. Wind changes or vestibule full not a problem use side door. Hot weather side door open front door open. In over a decade, this tent has never ever leaked on me, never collapsed in any weather condition, never snapped, nothing! 4000hh 5000 floor. For £100 brand new, it was a much much overlooked gem. I got this while everybody was buying those orange banshees and what not. The only things I don't like about it is the colour green/ black, I wish it was military green, even camo would do. And I don't particularly care for words and logos on ANY tent. Its an excellent tent that packs small from a brand with longstanding reputation. If I could find this tent in olive with no logos and it was freestanding (the latter not being a great necessity to me), then after 50 years of search. I'd finally, probably have my perfect tent. The search continues.

Always appreciate your vids, Ben. The name dropping of 'down coat' and 'Marino' layers tends to detract a little but overall, your vids are good value all round. Is the Tzengtu 2 worth £140? That's the big question. All the best, Ben
Cheers Paul. The manufacturer calls if khaki. I know it’s brown 😆 They do sell if in green 👍 Not sure what £200 sleeping bag you’re referring to or the name dropping thing? Thanks for watching, Ben 🤓
tent looks ok im old i use tried tested things my bag i use snug pack special forces 2 tent naturhike cloud peak 2 i just baght the tent before Christmas was hammock camping before that but yea keep up the reviews always interesting good work mate
Great informative review as always, very similar to a wandelen 2 tent I’ve been reviewing, I think they rebrand em , great tent and I agree best without footprint as saves some weight unless u want to pitch fly first 👍
Try Perthshire company Trekkertents especially the phreeranger (a take on the old phoenix phreeranger tent) a double skin outer pitch first, double vestibule side entry comes in 1100g approx, without pegs. By no means perfect but its my summer go to tent.
I think the perfect tent could be the new one tigris series. That Stella tent looks the business. And it's black! I've been banging on for years about why no one makes black tents! This one looks ok but not a fan of front entrances like that, I prefer two doors, one on each side.
Hey! I'm currently trying to decide whether to take the 3 season inner or the 4 season inner for the Taiji 2. I wanna camp at the coast, in the forest, on campsides and in the mountains. Could the 4 season inner be too warm in summer or is it manageable? I feel like the 3 season inner is more suitable for summer because the mesh gets all the way down to the bathtub what I dont really like cause I fear if it's windy outside it could be too cold inside the tent. What would you suggest? Love your content! Already watched tons of your tent test videos :)
Hey Jane, I’d probably say for go for the 4 season inner. It will be fine all year. The mesh is only really suitable for warmer weather unless you’ve dialled in an awesome wind proof sleep system. Ben 🤓
Great vid Ben, what about the cloud peak 2 ? Not sure if you already have this though, maybe just on your limit for weight, but ticks all the other boxes and it's better in higher winds than the taija although I'm sure I've seen a vid were someone swapped the poles out for fatter ones to make the taija more stable, but would the cost be worth it ??
@DaleyOutdoors think I might have the name wrong, isn't the cloud peak 2 what kgw uses ? Bit like the taiji but with that roof material bit that goes over the top ??
The sides don't look like they go close enough to the ground for a true 4 season tent, despite the inner. Imho. Edited. Thanks for correcting yourself on the 3 season inner.
Is there a correlation between the cost and a perfect tent? ie Hilleberg is potentially more perfect than tents that don't cost £42,000? Our perhaps there is a price point that stops a tent being perfect if one is doing a cost benefit analysis? Or maybe a tent becomes more perfect the more time since you last used it? Or have great memories when you used it?
I've got tags growing all over and it's a cob not a bap ,,I can honestly say the lanshan 2 is the worst tent I've ever bought,,woke up in it this morning and thought it had a built in shower there was that much condensation,,,great video 😃
I still have no desire to upgrade from my Terra Nova Laser. Yes, just laser, the original one. Green, spacious 1 person or intimate 2, double wall, outer & inner pitch together, weighs little more than a kg, double side door so you can have the whole side open in good weather for panorama views. I've had it I think 19 years now. The drawbacks might be that it's a bit fiddly to pitch on uneven ground and isn't freestanding, and of course its successors are pricy. But even 2 decades on i reckon I'd still get my money back for it if I wanted to upgrade, but I don't want to. The current models have slightly better pegs and end poles and one of the doors is on the opposite side. The selection of models includes options with lighter fabrics, but I can surely recommended the sil nylon for longevity.
I have a Nature Hike Spider 1. I’ve swapped out the stakes for a combination of 1g titanium skewers and MSR groundhogs to get the weight close to 1kg without the footprint. It packs down really small and it’s seen me through some pretty bad wind and rain in The Lakes and the Peak District. I’m 1.94m or 6’4” tall and I sleep on a Thermarest XLite NXT long with no problems but a slightly shorter friend didn’t get on with it at all so make of that what you will.
@@bradjones2924 it’s roomy enough. A solid inner would add to the pack ability and the weight. It’s big enough to get dressed inside, which is my benchmark. I had the OEX Phoxx1 before this and that was too small
@@robinmager I have put it up fly first when I needed to. I’ve also gone “fast and light” and only taken the foot print and fly. It’s not a 4 season tent by any means but it’s lighter than my silnylon tarp with a tyvek or polycryo groundsheet when you factor in the poles, cordage and all the stakes you need for a tarp plus you get a bug net and bathtub groundsheet. Tents are a very personal choice and I wouldn’t even consider only having one. I use a very different tent in the winter when I need more room for gear and cooking.
And of course it's too short. It's a real mystery to me why the majority of tents on the market are just a tad too short for average sized people. Is it really soo hard to make it 20cm longer?
Never mind the tent stuff, ear hair! The struggle is real. And trying to pull out you feel like you’re skull’s gonna come out with them! Just a thought
God I don't think we'll ever find the right tent, I managed to snag an amazing deal on a fjallraven shape 3 over covid but I'm thinking about moving it on before even using it 😅 I've come to realise that I really value headroom in a tent more than I realised and doing some research I don't think the shape fills that need 🤷🏻♀️
it’s the space at the bottom of the tent that bothers me. I would think that cold weather or wet weather would come into the bottom or even crawling creatures .Why can’t the tent go right down to the ground?
Tbh I think you could search till the cows come home the perfect tent doesn't exist.the budget is the most constraining factor but the requirements you have are pretty much same as mine but I spent the money and got the hilleberg niak for 3 season and the kuiu storm star for 4 season both tents were very expensive but I use them both a lot so it was worth it to me.but we would all love a 4 season tent at 2kg with all in 1 pitching and enough room that works in summer and be under 400 quid but that just doesn't. exist
Yeah that's kinda the point, it's a never-ending quest so should keep me entertained 😆 I like the look of the Niak, I've no idea why it's not as 'popular' as some of their others though? I basically want a Niak with pole clips 🤓
There's more room in it; and it has a bigger vestibule; but for the weight; I think I prefer my helm 1 compact! If the helm 1 compact had a 3 season inner (which theoretically should make it shed some weight too) it would, for the money, be a fantastic tent..its pretty good as it is! That was a good review, by the way. Have you seen the Nature hike Spider/Bikepacking tent; of you like side opening tents!? There is a blue one available, so dont be put off if you see the orange one..haha! I could murder those sausages in cheese baps!
@@daleyoutdoors I think it is! It looks a lot like the Cloud Up/ Alpkit Soloist tents, but with a side opening door. You did say (in the Soloist post) that you didnt mind inner pitch first..I concur, that that's no big deal.
@@daleyoutdoors I've been thinking of the Naturehike Spider and I think that with a ground sheet it can be a fly first pitch. I have similar specs for a perfect tent and the spider seems to come close. There aren't that many reviews to base a decision on though, so maybe one for you to try and we can see how you get on!?
@@daleyoutdoors Means in Cloud when lying down you're not touching the walls? (I'm 184cm myself-no hairdo though). Maybe you should do a video Cloud vs Zhengtu since they are so close yet different.
Inner pitch first 4 season tent 🤔 don't ever want to be messing with a fly in the wind, just a phaf. Not for me. Ideal 4 season tent is one without any pole sleeves, just clips, inner and outer pitch together. Don't think it beats the cloud peak 2, can't say its a 4 season but like the design.
@@daleyoutdoors Don't get me wrong, I know how the 3F season rating naming goes and know what to expect from a 3F tent and how it 'really' compares to a 'proper' 4 season but probably the most useful thing you could of done in this video is educated people on what makes a 4 season vs 3 season and what to look for in design.
@@mandarinmiata8209 the video was about this tent, so I explained the difference in the inners. I’ve been through the ‘real’ differences in other vids. There are plenty of others out there too.
Why are you trying to sleep the wrong way around? The low end is designed for your feet! It’s higher by the door so that you can sit up. I just take it that you are just copying the other muppets on RUclips for comedy value 😂
Because of the sloped pitch, as I said in the video. I did lay both ways and it wasn’t long enough for me either way around. For sitting up it’s highest in the middle…
@@daleyoutdoors we did laugh when you were wriggling around trying to keep in the middle 😂 Even Mrs F who doesn’t like camping laughed! I think that it’s all the one liners that keep us watching your videos.
I'll wager one whole English Pound to a charity of your choice that you never find your perfect tent. Too many variables in conflict. It'll always be a compromise, unless you have squigillions of quid (which as RUclipsr you must have...) to buy every tent for every occasion. Will enjoy your quest though, because your vids ain't bad, for a Northern lad. Glad you liked your sausage bap, or possibly roll, btw. Personally, I like baps.

Is the Tzengtu 2 worth £140?
That's the big question.
All the best, Ben
Cheers Paul. The manufacturer calls if khaki. I know it’s brown 😆 They do sell if in green 👍
Not sure what £200 sleeping bag you’re referring to or the name dropping thing?
Thanks for watching, Ben 🤓
Have to say I'm quite a fan of the Rakoon 2.1 we got, it's quite well thought out... Go Outdoors loot - although it was cheaper last year.
I love the design of the Rakoon I just wish it was lighter 🤔
@@daleyoutdoors It would certainly help... although my wifelet has promised that she will be coming along more often, so the load will get split.

Cheers Ian 👍
Great informative review as always, very similar to a wandelen 2 tent I’ve been reviewing, I think they rebrand em , great tent and I agree best without footprint as saves some weight unless u want to pitch fly first 👍
Thanks 👍
Try Perthshire company Trekkertents especially the phreeranger (a take on the old phoenix phreeranger tent) a double skin outer pitch first, double vestibule side entry comes in 1100g approx, without pegs. By no means perfect but its my summer go to tent.
I’ll have a look, thanks Ian 👍
Even better tent is the Saunders spacepacker better than the atko, unfortunately no longer made. Although I'm currently remaking mind.
interesting tent - and this company only charges 12 pounds for international shipping - im in Australia
Awesome video mate I am in Australia I have a tent called a Denali Kakadu you should have a look at that one keep up the great work
I'll check it out - thanks! Ben 🤓
First for me is length of inner needs to be a minimum of 230cm, being a tall bloke then weight
It's a batch 😊
Well I guess it’s a batch as there are two. A batch of cobs … 😆
Ben 🤓
@@daleyoutdoors Thanks for the quick answer!
You really need to look at the Hilleberg Anaris. You didn’t mention a budget so I’ll recommend it. 👍🏼
You could always sell me yours 😆
@@daleyoutdoors Never in a million years would I sell that tent. 😁
@@QuakerJones268 😆
Great vid Ben, what about the cloud peak 2 ? Not sure if you already have this though, maybe just on your limit for weight, but ticks all the other boxes and it's better in higher winds than the taija although I'm sure I've seen a vid were someone swapped the poles out for fatter ones to make the taija more stable, but would the cost be worth it ??
Cheers Mick! I had a Cloud Peak but found it a bit small/short on the inside, similar to this one, and as you say it's a bit heavy 🤓
@DaleyOutdoors think I might have the name wrong, isn't the cloud peak 2 what kgw uses ? Bit like the taiji but with that roof material bit that goes over the top ??
@@Mickoutdoors yes that’s the one
@DaleyOutdoors aww right never seen one in the flesh, always thought they were much bigger, like the taiji, every days a school day lol 😆

@@daleyoutdoors haha fair do's!
Durston xmid 1 or 2 maybe ?
The sides don't look like they go close enough to the ground for a true 4 season tent, despite the inner. Imho. Edited. Thanks for correcting yourself on the 3 season inner.
It’s not a 4 season tent. They class their inners as 3 of 4 season.
Good points. I still haven’t found a perfect Hilleberg to bd fair though.
I've got tags growing all over and it's a cob not a bap ,,I can honestly say the lanshan 2 is the worst tent I've ever bought,,woke up in it this morning and thought it had a built in shower there was that much condensation,,,great video 😃
Is it a ‘pro’ by any chance? I definitely prefer the dual skin ‘non pro’ lanshans for that reason.

Has anyone mentioned the Terra Nova pioneer 2? Great tent.
Not yet! It does look good to be fair. I’m not sure about the cap/flap on top. Have you got one?
@@daleyoutdoors Yes had it for over a year. Love it. Ticks all the boxes.
It’s a breadcake!!

👍 Nice one mate, I dont like that door and the fact its just one door.
Is it roomy enough? Wish they did a 2 person and with more solid inner like the cloud.up
@@bradjones2924 it’s roomy enough. A solid inner would add to the pack ability and the weight. It’s big enough to get dressed inside, which is my benchmark. I had the OEX Phoxx1 before this and that was too small
I've been looking at the Spider 1 / bikepacking tent - with the footprint can you put it up fly first? Would you recommend it?
@@robinmager I have put it up fly first when I needed to. I’ve also gone “fast and light” and only taken the foot print and fly. It’s not a 4 season tent by any means but it’s lighter than my silnylon tarp with a tyvek or polycryo groundsheet when you factor in the poles, cordage and all the stakes you need for a tarp plus you get a bug net and bathtub groundsheet. Tents are a very personal choice and I wouldn’t even consider only having one. I use a very different tent in the winter when I need more room for gear and cooking.
Sorry Daley its a roll hehe good vid as usual dude.
That’s just asking for confusion. WTH do you get when you ask for a sausage roll 😆
@@daleyoutdoors sausage roll is the one with pastry roll n sausage is the other one 😂
@@ForrixTV oh. 🤣
And of course it's too short. It's a real mystery to me why the majority of tents on the market are just a tad too short for average sized people. Is it really soo hard to make it 20cm longer?
Where is it made?
China.
Never mind the tent stuff, ear hair! The struggle is real. And trying to pull out you feel like you’re skull’s gonna come out with them!

God I don't think we'll ever find the right tent, I managed to snag an amazing deal on a fjallraven shape 3 over covid but I'm thinking about moving it on before even using it 😅
I've come to realise that I really value headroom in a tent more than I realised and doing some research I don't think the shape fills that need 🤷🏻♀️
It’s never-ending isn’t it 😆
how many cm is the height inside?
Around 115cm at the highest point but it tapers.
It’s a roll, what you ate was a roll n sausage 🏴 lightweight upgrade to a roll n square 👍🏻
Hmmm. Not convinced. 😆
@@daleyoutdoors haha you’re right, it would be a “morning roll” for the classic “roll n [breakfast item]” delicacy.

@@shawnr6117 bun n sausage? You off your head
@@alexdachs9884 what? You never heard of a sausage roll/bun ? You put something like a bratwurst in it with horseradish mustard and enjoy
it’s the space at the bottom of the tent that bothers me. I would think that cold weather or wet weather would come into the bottom or even crawling creatures .Why can’t the tent go right down to the ground?
You need a gap for air flow (it's a 3 season tent). Water/bugs can't get in to the inner tent.
They are " batches"
OEX Phoxx 2 v2
There's more room in it; and it has a bigger vestibule; but for the weight; I think I prefer my helm 1 compact!
If the helm 1 compact had a 3 season inner (which theoretically should make it shed some weight too) it would, for the money, be a fantastic tent..its pretty good as it is!
That was a good review, by the way. Have you seen the Nature hike Spider/Bikepacking tent; of you like side opening tents!? There is a blue one available, so dont be put off if you see the orange one..haha!
I could murder those sausages in cheese baps!
I have seen the spider, isn’t it inner pitch first? Thanks for watching 🫡
I can sell you a Vango if you want? 😜

Does it come with a floor sheet? Looks notch bigger/roomier than the Cloud Up 2 trying to chose which one?
Yes it does. Cloud Up is longer.

They do the inner in '4 season' or '3 season' variations. It's not a 4 season tent...
Not my cup of tea……..I use the Vango F10 Nitro 200, Orion 200, Hydra 200, OEX Phoxx2, Jackal 2 and Sugpak Ionosphere plus a few other Vango tents.
Was going to suggest the Phoxx 2 (I love mine), but it is hard for tall people to sit up in.
2 vestibuled side entrances though.
Great tent.
4 season😂, what, because it has a solid inner option! No way that's 4 season with those gaps between fly and ground. Wouldn't stop any spindrift.
Not the tent, no. 3F UL Gear (and others) call their mesh/solid inners ‘3 season’ and ‘4 season’. Probably to cause confusion…

Nope. Definitely a cob.
