Big thanks for making E:D so much better during that time. It was mandatory for me to get my information, especially for possible trade routes. And to be fair, it was that big mountain to scale as deciding to give it another look in VR. VR and having to visit a website constantly doesn't match up well. That and the whole Odyssey thing (as of: not supporting VR anymore and the utterly terrible performance even on high end rigs whereas the old E:D ran like butter on a 3rd gen with a fricken 970 that just has 3.5 Gigs), and now the shutdown of EDDB basically are the final nail in the coffin for me, most probably.
I just don't get this part: "Since this decision is impossible, I will not decide at all. Many also say that releasing EDDB as open source is the best solution. This is basically not up for debate for me." - especially since you (addressing this to Themroc) didn't explain way making it open source would be no option. The reasons you quit are absolutely reasonable, but I - probably as many others - would love to see the project continued, somehow. And making it open source and giving it to other people that literally have been asking to take over the project, probably with passion, is the one and only way to go. This currently almost feels like watching a big publisher shutting down their game service, leaving the license you bought completely in the dust. Nevertheless, and don't get me wrong: EDDB was absolutely fundamental for my E:D experience and I'm very grateful for how long you kept it running! All the best for you and your further projects! /)

It's just crazy to me when I think about all the relationships FDEV has soured over the years. I quit for good after Odyssey and now just rely on you and others to keep tabs. I used to be really angry about the direction of the game and how tone deaf FDEV was being. Now it's just sad. It's like watching the last of old friends who tried to be there throw in the towel and move on. Finally accepting that things are never going to change. Look how this channel has evolved. It used to be all about Elite, now even you just check in on them from time to time. Farewell EDDB. Playing Elite would have been far too tedious and time consuming for most of us without you. I hope that Inara doesn't start having the same feelings.

    • @dreyone6156

what's crazy to me is that it took so many years for people to finally figure this shit out. Like, the fact that they let toxic spergs like spytec and rhea run the game's biggest communities on reddit and discord and even linked to them on their official site at some point before eventually being forced to take the links down for liability reasons wasn't enough of a red flag already? People looked the other way for years while these spergs abused their positions to shit up the whole community with false allegations about other players and player groups, posting racial slurs and false hackusations, etc.
the community is literally a huge sperg infestation pit full of neo nazis, cringelord autists and all sorts of other assorted freaks. the pvp community is a cheater infested cess pool who have been caught using hacks red handed and exposed all over the internet more times than i can count and still continue doing it and getting away with it scott-free, all the unofficial discords, subreddits are trash, the playerbase is trash, the devs are trash. the game is a buggy mess with more exploits than you can shake a stick at.
i've never seen a more trash game in my entire life. im just as biased as the next person who played this franchise since the 80s but just because it has "Elite" in it's name doesn't make it a good game. The franchise fell off a long time ago and fdev has demonstrably proven beyond all doubt they give less than zero fucks about it
I uninstalled this trash back in April 2021, before that dumpsterfire Odyssey even came out, and still haven't looked back.

It makes no sense. How can someone assemble 80% of a perfect game, and then spend the next decade shitting the bed, insulting their audience, and refusing to finish the last 20% of features needed to become truly playable out of the box? @ObsidianAnt I'm seeing a trend here, first DW3 is cancelled, then Sagittarius Eye closes down, then the GMP comes to an end, then Lavecon is no longer happening, and now EDDB is no more. 5 of the best community driven initiatives the game has ever seen, and all gone over the past 18 months. Sad times, and nothing of note coming to replace them. I guess this happens to all games sooner or later though, but I can't help feel that the Frontier of 2014-2019 at least knew what it had and appreciated its community. After 2019 there's been a big change, and not for the better.

    • @dentara-rast

The game is old, its natural for the community to drift away when there's nothing new or innovative being added. But yeah, ever since Odyssey the creative vibe that was there during the heydays of DW2 and the big community projects that came before it just isn't there anymore.

The hay days of Elite (when astronauts were sending good luck wishes to DW2, when the same expedition was featured in New Scientist, when you could buy incredibly high quality physical copies of Sagittarius Eye magazine in Forbidden Planet, when Frontier had major reveals for their game at Lavecon), those days are undoubtedly over. I think burnout from the folks who did these things is the primary reason, Odyssey simply failed to reinvigorate them (although it can't really be blamed in the case of EDDB, whose creator hadn't played Elite for years). As someone who's heavily involved in keeping one of the games longest running player created institutions running (The Buckyball Racing Club) I can only add that burnout of the old guard is definitely a major factor in these things (although luckily we still love what we do and have just launched a brand new season of races for 3309) and we've ALWAYS struggled to get newer players to take up the mantle. Why that is I'm not sure .... I guess folks simply have more energy to kickstart their own ideas than to take over the running of old ones.

Its sad to see those days are gone but I'm glad I got to experience them! Burnout is real for sure, I didn't play much after DW2 and there hasn't been enough to tempt me back since those days. It seems Odyssey was a watershed moment for a lot of players. During Horizons we had a thriving community of event creators, after Odyssey its all seemed to stop, or at least not be as impactful. Like you say, there's been nothing on par with the coverage DW2 received back in the day, and there probably never will be now.

The first time I saw cannon’s website and just how much content frontier added to elite that most / many players have next to no other way to discover (other than by chance) and frontier has never felt it necessary to use missions or news stories to gently guide players towards content has always shown me what sort of mentality frontier has in terms of narrative structure.
    The same goes for resources.
If they put bases, crash sites, etc into the galaxy, and then the ONLY in-game way to find them is to accidentally stumble upon them, it’s a LOT of work wasted for very very few people to ever discover.
They don’t have to hold players hands to just say, idk, give a delivery mission that goes near a crash site or goes to a base that ends up being abandoned, etc. so players still feel like they’re discovering something by chance even though they were unknowingly guided to it.
But when frontier still thinks it’s acceptable to have to either use one of the few stations that sell everything or dock at station after station to find basic things (assuming you even know what module you’re looking for and what the options are) there’s little hope for more complex things like story elements or discovery.

One was a fetch quest that they *required* Eddb in order to complete.
The second was a custom chained mission (before they really existed) and crash site assets a dev created just for himself.

@@slinkerdeer you obviously dont understand the point of my comment. That makes you the idiot instead of me. Let me dumb it absolutely down to the max for you.
      - Elite dangerous is a spacefaring game that is about EXPLORING the galaxy.
      - Having all the info makes exploring obviously not essential anymore.
      - Thus lore benefits of the info not being avalaible to make you more likely to explore the game as intended.
      - Above points still apply factually no matter if you agree, its pure statistic and human behaviorism.
      - Players discover elite dangerous and download and pay for it.
      - They expected something else of an exploring game than exploring.
      - They start whining and complaining while boycotting and completely massacre the game with the negativity as influencers ( something that shouldnt be done because if you cant make ethical decisions, you should not be an influencer. I didnt see an ethical correct video for a while. And its commonly agreed that being a source of negativity isnt ethical).
      - They start to incite hate and fear in the playerbase, demanding changes and the company to do their will while exploiting the money of the viewers because viewers generate money.
      - Thus financially getting better of the backs of other peoples fears and hates because lets be real. We wouldnt watch the yamiks explain something for 40 minutes while other youtubers do it in 5, offer same quality. We do watch the yamiks because of the exploiting and we rather complain than actually be productive.
Now, there was once a political leaders who did this to a certain religion almost exterminating them but we are against that prick. But now obsidian ant and yamiks are doing this to frontier and nobody bats an eye. That makes you an obviously hypocrite.
Bottom line: if you dont have the time as you used for excuse to explore a game, dont friggen buy the game. It makes you look more dumb when you buy it and complain about it. Also its very lore friendly to not have the system for it. Do you have any idea how big of an electrical circuit you would need to beep a signal to another system within the milkyway? More than the station size could generate...

I think the fundamental problem is that there's a disparity between what FDev offers as gameplay and what player want.
FDev seem to take the view that travelling around the galaxy, locating things, is a big part of what the game is about.
Players, OTOH, just want to know what's available, and where it is, so they can go and collect it and then go and do stuff with it.
With that in mind, it's inevitable that FDev was never going to be especially thrilled to help 3rd-parties provide ways to help players bypass a large part of the intended gameplay... and it's to the credit of those 3rd parties that they've always managed to do so.

The fact that FD couldn't work out a way to make this work within the context of "you can't communicate faster than light" lore (which seems to be their main argument) shows their limited vision. I can think of a few ways that could work within game to allow a station to know more about what other stations in systems close by are doing/selling, even opening up some different mission types/gameplay loops for players just off the top of my head. Could even help make people feel more connected to the systems, helping to keep data flowing.
Apparently stations can't communicate useful, even vital data over great distances but we can teleport into someones seat from the other side of the galaxy to make their guns go pew for a bit.

Well, first off: Thanks for EDDB´s efforts over the years.
That being said: I think the issue, for me as a player, anyways, is not so much that Frontier isnt supportive enough about passing ingame data to 3rd party websites, but rather, that it failed to implement a decent information economy and management within the game, as i think that information available to players should always come from players (not the game´s database directly). Players should be able to choose if they want to "upload" certain information to a "galactic database" (there could even multiple databases split between the factions) and any time this information is being pulled by another player, there is a tiny reward for the player submitting that information. Some types of information would be "first gets rewarded" (f.e.: star system information - that which is today exploration data) and others should be "most recent gets rewarded" (f.e.: market prices).
In other words, sites like EDDB should not only not be needed in the first place, but actually be discouraged and detrimental to the games mechanics, which should be designed in a way, that encourages the use of the game´s internal information system over any external site on both ends, the provider (by ingame rewards) and the user (by making it free, or at least very cheap, and easy to access) of information.

It’s really mind boogling that frontier created a futuristic world with spaceships but no internet or other communication devices. RIP EDDB.

We have computers for navigation but they can’t store prices or plan routes to optimize profits. /s

I only spend like 20h in ED as I only found out about it when I got into VR. Have not seen much but really liked what I got to experience.
It was just too hard to progress, and it's less easy to browse the web while playing VR. I can imagine how much of a help EDDB was.

It’s overwhelmingly clear that Fdev have moved Elite down a whole load of pegs to a mere skeleton dev team, who have just enough resources to keep the servers running and patching the odd game-breaking bug that pops up. Any hopes of things changing are misplaced. Anyone who’s worked with or for a dev studio know that once they have decided to skeleton a game, it’s never going to get the love it deserves, no matter how much the community cries for change.

Despite everything, it must have been a really difficult decision to bring to a close a project you've been working on and running for so long. My guess is that Themroc has been thinking about doing this for a long while before biting the bullet. Thank you Themroc for all your hard work.
