And as you said the note 3 screen was used, but it was only in the second oculus dev kit and also only the screen portion of it, not the whole phone like in the gear VR.

No, the Gear VR has a audio slot that you can plug your headsets into. There are other videos on youtube with people using it with the earphones. i guess this guy didn't use one as he was reviewing it live

You probably did this already, but I have heard it's a common mistake. Did you remove the protective plastic on the actual lenses? Checking both sides of the lense? I saw someone complaining that they couldn't get it focused and then notice the plastic. Doh!
Bit disappointed with mine , wasn't expecting it to be so pixely, you don't see it on the vids on RUclips but it's dire quality. Most of the videos you really can't see much as the detail is so poor. Some things are impressive but we need 4k phone screens imo to make it worth it. Most the videos I seen say get etc , I would try it first. The vr cinemas are brilliant but why would you want to watch a film that looks so pixely. It reminds me of the Optimus 3d in terms of screen quality.

When I think of the near future usage of this devices, I think of a kind of psychiatric pillowed rooms, only bigger, where these kind of devices will be used. Just like patients who have hallucinations (so a kind of VR) and it's important they don't hurt themselves or anybody else for that matter.

They should make digital bluetooth gloves that sync up with the VR and provide a sense of feel... that would be awesome.

yes the cardboard fits about any phone and I saw some on ebay and amazon for 3 dollars
