Hi Richie! I'm glad that you have shown some 'in-app' footage. You seem to be the only user with any decent content on the Gear VR. I cannot believe the world is not exploding with excitement yet about this. It's good to be on the cusp of something that will change the world. Like we can explain to kids, the world before the internet....soon we'll be explaining the world before VR. Crazy times!
Hi Ritchie, thanks for your movies, they are real helpfull. I have one question, I copied a Half SBS 3D movie to the 3D folder I made in my Oculus/movie file but when I watch the movie there is no sound..... is there something I'm doing wrong?
This is amazing and I can not wait to get my own Gear VR when it's delivered to me. Can you on your next video show more of the VR Cinema and how to use all of its features. And plus when you selected void when in the Cinema is that just the film screen but no seats. Thanks
Hi Ritchie, I'm converting my 3D blurays into 3D sbs MP4's in preparation for the arrival of the Gear VR in Australia in January. Can you tell me if the audio can remain 5.1, or do I need to convert it to 2.0 to work with the Oculus Cinema? Thanks! Enjoying your video series.
Thanks for your great videos. Does the gear VR video player support subtitles e.g. srt subtitles files? I know that the official Note 4 video player does. So can you confirm this for the Gear VR please? Thank you and keep up the awsome work.
hi gr8 in depth video, just subscribed and will be watching more. i was wondering if you know a way to watch Ultraviolet Movies on the gear vr? currently use flixster but it has no version available for the vr headset. is there a work around or maybe an app i still have to discover? i know this is a question alot of us need to know. looking forward to your reply😎
I can't wait for this app! Question: If I own digital movies via UltraViolet, Flixster, Vudu, etc., can I watch them this way? Or will Samsung want us to purchase them again just for VR viewing? Thanks!
Travis Beatty If the movies are in a format that you can download and drop into the Oculus folder, it should be a problem. But if it's streaming or playing via their app, like Google Movies for example, then you might have an issue. It will probably depend on the developer/movie distributor as to their plans to have a presence within the Oculus Home environment. I think there will be a lot of people waiting for more details on this.
Thanks for the video! The 3d video I put on my Galaxy S4 is just as choppy if not more choppy than your video. It says it runs 60fps. Do you know if I have to convert it to a slower frame rate? Do I need a better phone? All I have is a Google cardboard for now. Any responses would be much appreciated.
Thanks, this option works perfectly! Now watching 3D and 2D movies on my Gear. Tested watching Gravity in 3D watched the whole movie with just a few breaks.
Hi, I have a DJI Phantom 3 drone - I use an Iphone6+ to view the drones camera in realtime. However in strong light it gets hard to see the screen - Could I use the Gear VR in this situation?
Hi, thanks for your useful reviews! Actually the movie experience is the one I'm most excited for. I do have a question about cinema VR. How is the compatibility with different video files (video and audio formats)? Is there subtitles support (how they look on screen)? Are we at least on par with Samsung stock video player? Thanks again! Edit: one last thing! I suppose yes, but is there a way to "lock" the pov in cinema mode? So that I won't be staring at the ceiling if I lie on a bed?
Mario Matteis Thanks for your questions, and yes the movie watching is even more popular than gaming in terms of questions. I'll be trying out different video formats and how SRT files can be loaded (if at all). I could only re-orient horizontally, not vertically - I had to stay sitting up but could re-adjust in any direction. I'll dig a little deeper to see if vertical reorientation is available.
***** Thank you very much! I recall the cinema app of the oculus rift having a nice set of features, even choosing the seating inside the virtual cinema was possible. Since the Gear VR app looks at least inspired (if not a porting) of the original app I'm confident that eventually the experience will be complete. I'll be waiting for your next video, thanks again for your kindness!
I tried .m2ts demo video (i.e. IMAX intro demo from demo-world dot com), even renaming to mp4, it will only show video and no audio. So far only .mp4 will work. I tried .mkv and it won't play. The movie trailers in the SD card came with Samsung are 720p and perceived as DVD quality. Though the screen looks big like real theater. I put in 1080p demo video, the screen is so much clearer.
One more question for you. I haven't seen if Oculus Cinema will let you change seats within the theater. Can you move down to a seat near the front or wherever you wish? I have the theater app from CMOAR and it has that capability. Thanks....and when the flip are they going to announce the release date?! Sorry, just venting. :-)
yes you can press the top of the 4 buttons on the Samsung Bluetooth controller that came with the gear vr (position of triangle on ps3 controller or y on xbox 360 controller)
I know I just commented on here recently but I had an interesting thought. What if it were possible to pull up the entire Android UI on the Oculus Cinema screen and have the look and click of the headset replace the touch screen functions? Wouldn't it then be theoretically possible to run any app in the Oculus Cinema? (movie apps, games, etc.). It would be a lot of coding and would require some backing from Google but it would work around video file shortage problems and open the door to a lot of other possibilities. Google can't be too serious about Cardboard, right?
Randall Simmons I think Google are very serious about Cardboard. In fact I just received my brand new VR One made by Zeiss and I'll be putting together a new segment about this and Google Cardbaord soon :-)
If you want to run RUclips app on Samsung Gear VR. Go Google Play and search "Play Cardboard apps on Gear VR" to run any Cardboard app on GearVR. Hope this help
Thank you for the great video, but I am having difficulty with the process. After copying the movie file and moving to the Oculus folder, after opening the Oculus folder I do not see all of the file names that are seen when you open your Oculus folder; like 360 and movies. I tried creating a folder and putting the movie file in there, but no luvk. Please help. Thank you.
I could use some help with Gear VR using Galaxy S7 edge. I'm trying 2 different things to get the most out of watching 3D movies on my VR. 1st being I'm trying to convert my 2D movies to 3D and what I would like to know is what setting I should use in my converter program such as format, resolution, audio, and should use full side by side or half side by side? Also I'm going to take what 3D movies I do have and convert them so I could use them in my VR so I would to get some settings for this also. I've tried finding a video here on youtube but haven't been able to find one that explains the whole process in detail. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Is there any way to play your videos from a UPNP or Network server in the oculus cinema. I would like to be able to play from the network as my videos are 8GB each and will soon fill the memory on my device. Would you use the gear VR in preference to a 60 in plasma for film watching in 3D? Also does it play MKV files? Thanks
Mark Perrin At the moment you need to load mp4 videos onto the local storage. Imagine a Plex server within that environment that could be streamed through the Oculus cinema... that would be pretty cool!
Might seem an obvious question is there a way to fade the lights when the film starts. I don't really go the cinema to admire the lighting and ceiling fans?
@Ritchie's Room Hiii.. Your videos helped me lot... Can u please tell is there any way to add 180 degree videos in gear vr without using milk vr????_____ Thanx
+Santosh Khotlande Do you mean 360 with only half the content? If that's the case just create a folder called "360Videos" and put them in there, and you should be able to see them in the 360 video app.
Thanks for showing the procedure Ritchie. The Cinema VR 3-d mode replicates the bad thing about watching on the home screen, seeing the surroundings of the theater room. VR has the chance to bring you all in, having ONLY the movie screen in view i e whole screen cinema. The Cinema mode is a second best. Now, why would they not supply the option to view whole screen Movies? Scared to lose sales on TV screens?
+GadgetyMV The image looks massive in the Oculus Cinema. Having the the movie kind of wrapped around your head probably wouldn't be the best experience. You would have to move your head around constantly to see the full content. But that said, IMAX is a little like that so that could work for certain movies.
Hi Ritchie, just a quick question. How tightly does the Note 4 rest in the Gear VR where the screen meets the device? If you have a 0.4mm thin tempered glass screen protector on your Note 4, would it still fit? That is, do the pads on the Gear VR that the Note 4 rests on have that much give to them?
Coldpyro66 I think it could handle a bit of give, as the hooks feel sturdy but with a bit of room to add a protective screen. I'll try it it and let you know.
***** Ok cool, and ok thanks a lot! I have the Zagg "Glass" tempered glass screen protector on my Note 4 at the moment, which is where the 0.4mm measurement comes from. You could probably use other types of screen protectors that would be incredibly thin, but the way I reason it is that if at all possible to use, the tempered glass would likely be the clearest material possible, especially under the magnification of the lenses from the Gear VR headset. I've seen other tempered glass screen protectors as thin as 0.33mm, so if you choose to use another brand and it works, hit me up with the brand. In any case, thanks for the reply!
***** Hi again Ritchie. Just wanted to say I received my Gear VR, and it works flawlessly with the Zagg "Glass" tempered glass screen protectors, so no worries there. Though I did want to let ya know, and hopefully other people see this comment as well if they were wondering or worried about it. Cheers and thanks again!
lpchris233 No RUclips or streaming yet, but remember that the Mobile VR SDK from Oculus was only released recently, I'd say apps like that would be in the works now.
So, how exactly do you get side-by-side 3D movies like the one you showed? Is it downloaded somewhere? Does someone with a 3D camcorder have to record it? Also, your video can be viewed in 3D by crossing your eyes. It strains the eyes but worth it if you want a taste of the 3D effect. Only thing missing is the field of view.
ArchangelExile That particular video was downloaded from RUclips, And yes! You could cross your eyes, or even get a Google Cardboard or similar to see how it works.
+callum mcdonald You would have to use the developer mode which would stop the phone from activating when you put it in the gear VR. First load a game from Sideload VR, which will give you a signed apk, then choose developer mode. Here's a link to the details: forums.oculus.com/viewtopic.php?t=25393
is there any application that has only theater background when playing movies, just a background in playing 2d movies without tilting and drifting the theater environment, just the background? pls reply if theres a such application like taht and pls send the link where i can download freely thanks
ruben mclean Yes you can - I'll demo that in another video as well :-) It's a great feature to use if you just want to see your drink/food location haha! At least that's how I used it.
i am happy to see that we can load our 3d videos aswell...did u try different formats of videos like which doesnt play on our stock video player for note 4 but does well on 3rd party apps like mx video player..can it play files with dts or ac3 sound etc ? or we need to be happy with what stock player can play..i am following your every gear VR video and i dont want u to stop doing it lol..this one is the best till now by actually letting us know how the screen looks..i guess its time u show us some 360 videos which comes preloaded in your next vid ... keep up the good work :) and thank u for your efforts
the video looks jerky i understand its due to recording frame rates but..the resolution looks better atleast 1080p type if not 2k..how do u feel what kind of resolution you get to feel when you are watching movies in theatre surround or just screen with no surroundings etc..because i heard a lot about pixellation but i dint find any in this video..or does it also depends on the type of video you playing like 1080p wont pixellate but anything below 720p can pixellate while watching..i would like to know your take on all this aspects :0
Akshay Sawant The resolution of the video has been quoted elsewhere as being 720p, there is some screen door effect as you are only centimeters away from the Note 4, so even if you have a higer res vid it will be down converted on the fly, it appears. Thanks again for the questions!
Javier Sanchez At this stage no, in fact there's no official way to get RUclips, Netflix or other streaming service right now - but I'm sure that's an app in the works right now.
So how can I get movies on this. Especially the ones you have. Are they all easy on it? Does the market app on the VR have movies to purchase? Or do I gotta do what u did. Don't really know to to do all that. I'm guessing you can't watch movies you buy on play store on this can you? Got my VR on way and could use any help I can get. Thanks and great vid
Francos Tacos You can't purchase or stream movies on Oculus Cinema yet - but I'm sure this is an app being developed as we speak, based on the interest we've seen through my segments. Just put your own movies into the folders as a I described in the segment and you'll see them appear in the Oculus Cinema. At this stage is a very manual way of doing things but I'm sure that will evolve. Thanks for your comment!
Thanks for this video, looks great :) eagerly awaiting it's release in the UK. .. Quick question though, it looks very jerky. Is it actually like that or a biproduct from how you've recorded it?
I have a bunch of 3d Movies in mp4 on my hard drive I converted how do I watch them on my phone? How did you get a jump drive connected to your phone? I can watch the regular movies, but when I watch the 3D movies its not in 3D. Help Please
u should try vr player its the same effect but with just a screen and you can manually adjust the fov also it dosnt overheat your phone. Ive been using it with google cardboard
Bierce88 I've also used that with Google Cardboard, it's pretty cool. Gear VR only allows you to use the Oculus Software, which makes sense as they have put massive effort into ensuring the VR experience is top notch - and I can tell you, it absolutely is.
Bierce88 Actually it makes complete sense, the control mechanism of the Gear VR is tied directly into the the Gear VR software - as soon as you insert the Note 4 into the Gear VR, Oculus Home is launched. The work they've done is a tight link between hardware and software - and Oculus want you to stay within their ecosystem to ensure the experience remains high quality.
Bierce88 No, it's the micro USB port that triggers the connection. In an early version I was even able to get Google Cardboard app working but that's all been shut down now.
Ok Now i got a Gear VR for note 4... However i noticed that most of the 3d Movies works fine with visuals but i cant hear a sound. Any thoughts on that? HELP ! (sniff)
My question is. .. can these 2d movies and 3d movies instead of being in any theatre or watching on a moon... can these movies be up close in your face kinda movies with no borders.
+Ernest P. Worrell - If you select the Void Theater, you have the option of re-sizing the screen to your liking. You can have it on your face, but due to the inherent scale of the Oculus format, 16:9 content that covers your field of view requires quite a bit of panning around with your head. There's also a Travel Mode option in the Void Theater, which makes the screen follow your head movements (not instantly, more like a rubber band effect).
Ritchie can you please help me figure out the app i need for this device with my samsung galaxy grand prime?...i wanted to watch a real hour and half movies...do i need some special software to have it work more realistic?..any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated as im not sure how to do all this..i have been viewing just regular short vids from my play store and they look good but seems like if i had a app for this to match with my phone i may have even better experience...i did check to see if this phone was compatible with the samsung gear vr...and it said my samsung galaxy grand prime was compatible...thank you for your time and many blessings xoxoxox Serenity T
Looks very awesome Ritchie. You should also make some videos about cool things to do with Google Cardboard. I personally have cardboard but am looking for cool things to do with it.
So, its like you are watching a movie on a huge screen? The movie is not actually around you? I was wondering if thats even possible that you take place in the movies because if you turn around, you should see a bunch of cameras filming the scene=) Thank You!
Ronnie Barrese Copy the entire Oculus Folder, that should be fine. Of course, don't take anything off the original SD card just in case you do run into problems.
I do have quite a lot of 3d-recordings (from Sky 3d recorded side by side) but they do not come in 3d in a "3D" named Folder (they are queezed like on a normal Screen which then starts to flicker after activating it to 3d on a regular 3d tv) but remain squeezed and not 16:9 3d. And even if I add a txt-file { "title": "unrevelling-the-cosmos-3d", "format": "3DLRF", "category": "trailers", "theater": "" } to it that shows no effect. So what am I doing wrong? I guess it does not make any difference whether you add a Folder "3D" through your pc-Connection or the way you have done it on the Galaxy note. The original files that come with the VR actually Show no queezing but even LTBX film side by side. So since I have originally letterboxed (or rather 16:9) Video Content from Sky 3D is squeezed it to the approx. measurements in Adobe Premiere and re-rendered it that way. But still I have a squeezed non-3d-film in the Occulus theatre ... side by side. Mind you I do not have an MP4 film but converted into wmv (that is what the Galaxy concertes it to when it asks me if I want to Keep the original file but that might not be playable. So... BIG questionmark .... Maybe somebody knows an answer to this. Thanks
can you tell me..a noob question im thinking of getting the note 4 and I was wondering how good is gear VR just ive used google cardboard before and I was not impressed tbh I don't think games are that good on mobiles enough for great VR, is this different or do they still just look like the usual android games? bad textures etc just don't bring me into that VR world like its supposed to also did not help with the cardboard viewer I bought because when it was on my face other than being very uncomfortable I could see all around the glass lense areas...the cardboard around it so it was more like looking through a window and still seeing the window pane all around it...does this happen with gear vr OR do you literally just see the screen on your phone and no edges of the viewer inside or outside the lense area
+Dreamer1422 No, it doesn't have to be, in fact most content will probably NOT be in 3D - but the room you are in (the cinema itself) is what will be 3D and immersive.
+Ritchie's Room Bro, this is just so cool! I bet Apple is _dying_ they let this slip past them. My God, I never have to go to the Cinema again! The sickest part of it is, this is only just first gen. Imagine when the wireless technology kicks in. Unreal!
where do I go to get mp4 movies? new to this game, but feel this is the future. Awesome video by the way! I read every bit of info. on vr that I can get, and yours stands out amongst the crowd. Keep it up!
dave griffin Thanks very much, I'm loving delving into this new technology and appreciate all the views and comments that come my way! It's actually very hard to get legal movies in mp4 - hopefully this will change in the future.
If watching content in 5.1 surround, does rotating your head alter the direction of the simulated speakers? EX: Turning your head 45 degrees to the left, are the front two speakers (Left and Right) coming only through your right ear?
crimsoncold210 I think the cinema can distinguish, and here's why - the 3D trailers looked totally full width as a straight up mp4, but the content I dragged from youtube was squeezed - but both looked fine. Maybe there's software that recognises the format and resizes if needed.
If you are watching a Downloaded 2D movie . For instance , Titanic in 1080p Bluray . How was the quality compared to the real video quality . Was it excellent ? or it dropped few detail ? How big the screen felt and seemed when you watched the movie . Please let me know . Thank you .
***** Stupid question, probably... But, uh, when I comes to viewing 3D films here, do you get any of that terrible eyestrain that they tend to cause in actual cinemas? Very informative video. Thanks!
***** I haven't watched a full length 3D movie yet, but that is a good question - something I'll have to report back. And thanks for your compliment, much appreciated!
I have done everything I have seen you and other do to get your mp4 movies to play in the oculus cinema. When I go to my videos in the cinema it has a message saying I can add videos to it on sd or internal memory. When I look in the storage of the sd card in my files it shows it is there. I am frustrated and hope for some light to be shed because I am so excited to watch movies in there. Thank you for any help
That does sound strange, have you tried adding them to your local drive, perhaps that's still the default? Or maybe the mp4 file is encoded in a way that's unreadable by the app?
can this Gear VR work on Note 4 Exynos variant? and where did you buy your Gear VR and your Note 4? Can I buy them? and will they work in another country?
Abdulah Alasiri From what I've read, the Exynos version doesn't currently work well. I have the Australian version but the firmware has been updated outside of normal OTA, I've been given early access as a reviewer so the firmware may even be incomplete. At this stage, the official line is only available in the US.
***** Thanks for replying. Can you, as a reviewer, talk about this problem in your videos? Everyone around the world wants this stupid gadget working everywhere! I am frustrated and angry about Samsung not making this available world-wide! It is ridiculous! They know, at Samsung, that every enthusiast wants a piece of VR and after they tease and promise the world with Note 4 for whole two months it turned out to be incompatible?? I am utterly disappointed at Samsung and I am more angry because I love this company but now I kinda wish that the Gear VR was Apple's idea because I know they will NOT fail to deliver like Samsung now. So please can you talk about this in one of your reviews? And if you find an update or anything about this problem please do inform us here :( Thanks guy
Abdulah Alasiri This was always going to be a limited release - the product has still only been launched in the States, and it's not a fully-fledged consumer model. Expect that sometime late this year. The difference with Apple is that you probably wouldn't have seen a "consumer prototype", which is what this model really is. Even John Carmack has said that the Exynos version does not perform as well in comparison. But thanks for your input, I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who would love to see this have a wider release... at this stage is it going to be pretty restricted it seems.
+Jeremy Nelson Actually you can't "make" any video 3D, they would need to be produced that way. The VR cinema you are sitting in is 3D but the content you are watching could be 3D or 2D - it depends on the file, and that's not something you could change.
all my movies I downloaded are half side by side. all I can find. everytime I play one in the oculus theatre is plays it side by side and not 3d. any ideas?
+cowboysfanzz77 You should re-encode your videos. I convert them myself from my 2D movie they are 1080p H.264 but they are generally about 10gb each. Dang guess I'll get started on that... :( For example, convert any 2D/3D source videos to SBS 3D MP4/MKV (Gear VR friendly formats), Then you can free change your target video size, bitrate, frame rate and 3D depth in “Settings”. If you want to get best video quality, pls switch them to “original”. 3D movies should be encoded “full side-by-side” with a 1:1 pixel aspect ratio. Content mastered at 1920×1080 compressed side-by-side 3D should be resampled to 1920×540 resolution full side-by-side resolution (Learn more). We also recommend using a higher bit rate than a typical web stream at that resolution, as the pixels in your video will be magnified on the phone’s screen. The optimal bit rate is content dependent, and many videos can get by with less, but 5 Mb/s should give good quality. (Note: While H.264 is the recommended video coding, H.265 videos can also be played) Here is the steps: www.hivimoore.com/2015/12/view-3d-movies-with-gear-vr/
Dwight Swaney You can find the movies via torrents and follow the directions in the above video but as Dwight said it is not legal so do it at your own risk.
Well it's not legal in the states but converting purchased BDs for personal use is legal here in Canada. I'm just wondering if the home-made SBS MKV files play on gear vr?
Faizan Hassan From the Oculus support page: Currently, we support the following video file types: .mp4 .m4v .3gp .3g2 .ts .webm .mkv .wmv .asf .avi .flv
Hi. Why it is so laggy when you watcch a movie. We will have lag when we watch a movie or when we look around in the cinema ? It is pretty awful and that's why I'm asking you :)
For the people that do not see the Movies folder. 1.Open the Oculus File like he did in the video and create a file named Movies. 2.Now open the Movies file you just created and create another that says 3D (and for non 3D other videos create a My Videos folder) 3.Now just copy your 3d videos into the 3D folder you created. Now Enjoy!! :)
Why can't youtube videos just be played live on Samsung VR instead of downloading them and storing them on the phone. Surey the menu options can easily be adapted.
+Babak Kamali I think it's more of an issue with RUclips agreeing. But with the new 360 platform on RUclips you'd think they would be close to an agreement. Let's hope so, would certainly make all VR headsets more useful for viewing available content.
Quick comment. I do believe that in the final version of the Gear VR (the final "Innovator Edition," that is), you will need to have these videos on the micro SD card that is plugged in directly to the headset, rather than the phone storage. I also read or heard somewhere (possibly in the SDK docs) that the 3D folder will in fact already be present in the pre-loaded micro SD card that ships with the unit. Just FYI to anyone who happens to see this video after the units start shipping.
+AcidIEdits yes you do. i had to make a movies folder and within that i made a my videos folder and 3d folder. the 3d movie will not work unless you put it in the 3d folder
Great video! Any word on the Australian release date?
Crazy times!
the way you have shown me doesnt work for the s7 edge with the oculus vr. Can you please do an update or tell how it maybe different
Just create a movies folder and add your vids
Brill! For a minute there I thought I had no choice but to sign up to Netflix. Thanks for sharing this. Can't wait to try it!!
Hey, I've been enjoying your videos. I just got my Gear VR yesterday and my mind is blown!
David Stomp It is awesome, isn't it. It's hard to explain to someone until you actually put it on their head and they go WOOOOOOOOOW!
hi gr8 in depth video, just subscribed and will be watching more. i was wondering if you know a way to watch Ultraviolet Movies on the gear vr? currently use flixster but it has no version available for the vr headset. is there a work around or maybe an app i still have to discover? i know this is a question alot of us need to know. looking forward to your reply😎
Could you post more in-app gear VR footage?

Hi, I have a DJI Phantom 3 drone - I use an Iphone6+ to view the drones camera in realtime. However in strong light it gets hard to see the screen - Could I use the Gear VR in this situation?
I need to know if you can lock the accelerometer so you can watch movies while laying horizontally.
***** I think the vertical reorientation can be done in the VR gallery app or so.
Samsungmania said something like this in his review.
Slash310579 Thanks, I'll be sure to check that out and get back to you. Thanks all for contributing!
HI!..looks sweet!...you always have to watch as you are inside cinema or you can just watch a direct video fullscreen?...thanks!
Roninjapan You can also watch in a "Void" mode where there is just empty space, and the screen reaches from edge to edge or your vision.
thanks!!..i have spare samsung galaxy note 4 ...i should buy this and try with my G4.
Nice idea. Did you mean this app play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.cardboardappforgearvr
Yeah, It is
I did try this app, It work well as description. Easy to run any Cardboard app with ONE TAP. Awesome
I need it. Thanks
Thanks for using our app!
Thank you.
Where can I get 3D movies to watch on Gear VR? Play Store? Or can I use any ripped 3D movie from my Blu Rays or purchased digital downloads?
Thanks
can I buy a movie from the Android App Store and play them on gear VR Cinema????
I don't really go the cinema to admire the lighting and ceiling fans?
deanjohncaldicott It's a great question being asked by quite a few, and no, there's no control of the cinema environment at this stage.
+Ritchie's Room I can play 360 videos but i cant play 180 degree 3D videos
I haven't tried half sphere vids. I'll see if I can find one to test.
+Ritchie's Room Okay... Thanx
I have the Zagg "Glass" tempered glass screen protector on my Note 4 at the moment,
which is where the 0.4mm measurement comes from. You could probably use other types of screen protectors that would be incredibly thin,
but the way I reason it is that if at all possible to use, the tempered glass would likely be the clearest material possible, especially under the magnification of the lenses
from the Gear VR headset.
Can you watch RUclips videos with the Gear VR? Also will it work if you are streaming a movie online?
lpchris233 No RUclips or streaming yet, but remember that the Mobile VR SDK from Oculus was only released recently, I'd say apps like that would be in the works now.
is it possible to move or copy files to sd card rather than device storage then play them from occulas theatre ?
at what rate did you bought your gear vr ?
please tell me
PRICE?
and in which country too?
Where do you get the 3d movies?
Is it possible to play files directly from the SD card?
So, how exactly do you get side-by-side 3D movies like the one you showed? Is it downloaded somewhere? Does someone with a 3D camcorder have to record it?
Also, your video can be viewed in 3D by crossing your eyes. It strains the eyes but worth it if you want a taste of the 3D effect. Only thing missing is the field of view.
ArchangelExile That particular video was downloaded from RUclips, And yes! You could cross your eyes, or even get a Google Cardboard or similar to see how it works.
awesome video how can I play the insidous game on the Samsung gear vr ?
+callum mcdonald You would have to use the developer mode which would stop the phone from activating when you put it in the gear VR. First load a game from Sideload VR, which will give you a signed apk, then choose developer mode. Here's a link to the details: forums.oculus.com/viewtopic.php?t=25393
I cannot find my videos in oculus folder can u help me please?as soon as u can
is there any application that has only theater background when playing movies, just a background in playing 2d movies without tilting and drifting the theater environment, just the background? pls reply if theres a such application like taht and pls send the link where i can download freely thanks
is this app work with other vr headsets?
how do I i know which is the right format of 3D side by side ??
what did u connect to to get the folder and the oculus cinema
Can you display the see through mode for when you want to move around in your living space, but dont want to take the headset off?
ruben mclean Yes you can - I'll demo that in another video as well :-) It's a great feature to use if you just want to see your drink/food location haha! At least that's how I used it.
Bingo. That is exactly why I want to use it lol.
what software do yall use to download movies?
i am happy to see that we can load our 3d videos aswell...did u try different formats of videos like which doesnt play on our stock video player for note 4 but does well on 3rd party apps like mx video player..can it play files with dts or ac3 sound etc ? or we need to be happy with what stock player can play..i am following your every gear VR video and i dont want u to stop doing it lol..this one is the best till now by actually letting us know how the screen looks..i guess its time u show us some 360 videos which comes preloaded in your next vid ... keep up the good work :) and thank u for your efforts
the video looks jerky i understand its due to recording frame rates but..the resolution looks better atleast 1080p type if not 2k..how do u feel what kind of resolution you get to feel when you are watching movies in theatre surround or just screen with no surroundings etc..because i heard a lot about pixellation but i dint find any in this video..or does it also depends on the type of video you playing like 1080p wont pixellate but anything below 720p can pixellate while watching..i would like to know your take on all this aspects :0
Akshay Sawant Thanks for your comments, I'll test out a few different formats and see what works.
Akshay Sawant The resolution of the video has been quoted elsewhere as being 720p, there is some screen door effect as you are only centimeters away from the Note 4, so even if you have a higer res vid it will be down converted on the fly, it appears. Thanks again for the questions!
It seems very jumpy is that because your recording or is that just how it plays?
+rpboulan No, When i used it on a S6 edge with Gear VR (€99), it was smooth, its probably the recording that makes it jumpy.
Great video, the wait for the gear vr is getting more difficult so its fantastic your making theses video, cheers.
richie brown Apologies for making it even more unbearable lol :-)
Can I use this for Netflix or RUclips?
How did u get 3D movies on yours. Was there an app or something online that u got them from. I'm new to all this.
And is there room on the SD card it comes with to put some movies on . Thanks for ur help
Thanks for this video, looks great :) eagerly awaiting it's release in the UK. ..
Quick question though, it looks very jerky. Is it actually like that or a biproduct from how you've recorded it?
Hey Mark, you are correct, I'm using a screen recorder app and it doesn't output a very high framerate. It is super smooth in real life.
That's fantastic news :)
Thanks for replying!
how do you use 3d subtitles to the 3d movies in gear vr??
Hey does that mean we could create lobby and watch a movie with someone else ?
+Pedro Sandres (A.E) With Oculus Social, that is now a possibility!
Gear VR only allows you to use the Oculus Software, which makes sense as they have put massive effort into ensuring the VR experience is top notch - and I can tell you, it absolutely is.
wait so u cant just launch vr player then put the gear vr on how do they block it that dosnt really make sense
Bierce88 Actually it makes complete sense, the control mechanism of the Gear VR is tied directly into the the Gear VR software - as soon as you insert the Note 4 into the Gear VR, Oculus Home is launched. The work they've done is a tight link between hardware and software - and Oculus want you to stay within their ecosystem to ensure the experience remains high quality.
oh then they must be using nfc im sure if you turned nfc of on your phone it would work
Bierce88 No, it's the micro USB port that triggers the connection. In an early version I was even able to get Google Cardboard app working but that's all been shut down now.
Ok Now i got a Gear VR for note 4... However i noticed that most of the 3d Movies works fine with visuals but i cant hear a sound. Any thoughts on that? HELP ! (sniff)
Does this work w the samsung galaxy s8 active?
My question is. .. can these 2d movies and 3d movies instead of being in any theatre or watching on a moon... can these movies be up close in your face kinda movies with no borders.
+Ernest P. Worrell have you found your answer?
+hotchalupa ExAcTlY
Are you able to copy to the device storage only or can you also copy to the SDCard?
Harry Houdini At the moment I'm actually using on the local storage. I haven't actually used the micro SD card version yet.
Thanks. I found out how to use use your own external SD card. It was just to copy the contents over.
Cool - does the Oculus Folder need to sit in the root directory of the micro SD card?
Yes, that is basically it.
dose this work for the new gear VR and s7 if no can u make a new video to see how it works? thanks!
+Rafael Munoz it works in s7
Looks very awesome Ritchie. You should also make some videos about cool things to do with Google Cardboard. I personally have cardboard but am looking for cool things to do with it.
Hey there, I also have Google Cardboard, and love it. I'll see what else I can come up with for that. Nice hearing from you!
***** Cheers mate. I'm sure the Rift or the Gear VR is a much better experience. I should probably get a review unit to play with.
but what about own 360' clips??? Where to put them?
So, its like you are watching a movie on a huge screen? The movie is not actually around you? I was wondering if thats even possible that you take place in the movies because if you turn around, you should see a bunch of cameras filming the scene=) Thank You!
Hi Richie do you need to insert the sd card that comes with the vr every time or can i copy all the files over to my own 128gig card cheers ronnie
And even if I add a txt-file
{
"title": "unrevelling-the-cosmos-3d",
"format": "3DLRF",
"category": "trailers",
"theater": ""
}
to it that shows no effect.
Thanks
can you tell me..a noob question im thinking of getting the note 4 and I was wondering how good is gear VR just ive used google cardboard before and I was not impressed tbh I don't think games are that good on mobiles enough for great VR, is this different or do they still just look like the usual android games? bad textures etc just don't bring me into that VR world like its supposed to
also did not help with the cardboard viewer I bought because when it was on my face other than being very uncomfortable I could see all around the glass lense areas...the cardboard around it so it was more like looking through a window and still seeing the window pane all around it...does this happen with gear vr OR do you literally just see the screen on your phone and no edges of the viewer inside or outside the lense area
does all content you want to watch has to be 3D? it does the Gear VR transform it?
***** do u know how to play over under 3d movies in the cinema vr
If watching content in 5.1 surround, does rotating your head alter the direction of the simulated speakers?
EX: Turning your head 45 degrees to the left, are the front two speakers (Left and Right) coming only through your right ear?
Is there an app you need on your phone for this to work or is it all in the gear vr?
plug your phone in.
Do you have to convert Half Width SBS MP4 video files or Full Width SBS MP4? Or is it MKV?
crimsoncold210 I think the cinema can distinguish, and here's why - the 3D trailers looked totally full width as a straight up mp4, but the content I dragged from youtube was squeezed - but both looked fine. Maybe there's software that recognises the format and resizes if needed.
Ah I see. I'll try it out. Thanks
If you are watching a Downloaded 2D movie . For instance , Titanic in 1080p Bluray . How was the quality compared to the real video quality . Was it excellent ? or it dropped few detail ? How big the screen felt and seemed when you watched the movie
. Please let me know . Thank you .
Can you tell me what keyboard youre using on your note?

Stupid question, probably...
Cruz the name of the movie has to have only letters!only letters! No numbers... Try it
I thank you all for the help it has been fixed, the movies were encoded diffenent than the app would read, I changed that and they now play as mp4s.
Hey can I watch a movie that I downloaded from the play store on the VR? How do I get my movie into oculus cinema?
ncaputo85 There's no way to see your downloaded Google movies from within the Oculus app right now, but hopefully that will change.
+Ritchie's Room Could you test Oculus Social VR App for Gear VR , thanks :-).
can i purchase a movie from play sotre and watch it on gear vr for example kung fu panda
i dont have an oculus folder on my phone...do you have any ideas on what to do?
+Bungle2010 i dont even have a file that says oculus
Can we watch 3D movies without this whole room\cinema thing? Like just watch the movie itself without any add up stuff over it?
Fares Alahmar yes
How do I put subs on my movies?
can this Gear VR work on Note 4 Exynos variant?
and where did you buy your Gear VR and your Note 4?
And if you find an update or anything about this problem please do inform us here :(
Thanks guy
Abdulah Alasiri This was always going to be a limited release - the product has still only been launched in the States, and it's not a fully-fledged consumer model. Expect that sometime late this year. The difference with Apple is that you probably wouldn't have seen a "consumer prototype", which is what this model really is. Even John Carmack has said that the Exynos version does not perform as well in comparison. But thanks for your input, I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who would love to see this have a wider release... at this stage is it going to be pretty restricted it seems.
can you make any video 3d? or does it have to be a certain kind?
+Jeremy Nelson Actually you can't "make" any video 3D, they would need to be produced that way. The VR cinema you are sitting in is 3D but the content you are watching could be 3D or 2D - it depends on the file, and that's not something you could change.
when I go to the oculus folder it is empty except for one like bin file there are no other folders I'm using the s6. help
all my movies I downloaded are half side by side. all I can find. everytime I play one in the oculus theatre is plays it side by side and not 3d. any ideas?
+cowboysfanzz77 You need to create a separate 3D folder in the movie folder - then Oculus Theatre will treat them as such.
+cowboysfanzz77
You should re-encode your videos.
I convert them myself from my 2D movie they are 1080p H.264 but they are generally about 10gb each. Dang guess I'll get started on that... :(
For example, convert any 2D/3D source videos to SBS 3D MP4/MKV (Gear VR friendly formats), Then you can free change your target video size, bitrate, frame rate and 3D depth in “Settings”. (Note: While H.264 is the recommended video coding, H.265 videos can also be played)
Here is the steps: www.hivimoore.com/2015/12/view-3d-movies-with-gear-vr/
Wher I can download movie like that Roll CoasteR?
Where can I download movies like Guardians of the galaxy in 3d onto the Note 4 in mp4?
Dwight Swaney You can't just yet - there's no legal way to do it at this stage.
So is a pc required?
Dwight Swaney You can find the movies via torrents and follow the directions in the above video but as Dwight said it is not legal so do it at your own risk.
Well it's not legal in the states but converting purchased BDs for personal use is legal here in Canada. I'm just wondering if the home-made SBS MKV files play on gear vr?
Doris John The movies play on your phone not the gear VR Why not encode them mp4 h264? Those play for sure on your phone.
can occolus make use of the sd card location instead oof on the phone itself?
Which video file does gear vr support ?? Only mp4 videos ??
Faizan Hassan From the Oculus support page: Currently, we support the following video file types: .mp4 .m4v .3gp .3g2 .ts .webm .mkv .wmv .asf .avi .flv
Hi. Why it is so laggy when you watcch a movie. We will have lag when we watch a movie or when we look around in the cinema ? It is pretty awful and that's why I'm asking you :)
+Narcis Aciu because it's a recording.
+LargeBanana Thanks for your reply :)
Narcis Aciu no problem bud.
+LargeBanana yo I got a question...can u watch movies full screen? not like you are in a cinema theater
L. Lawliet i wanted to know that too but i believe you can, with a player called VOID player in the gear vr.
There is no Oculus folder on my Galaxy S6,any help please !!!!
thanks a lot man,that was very helpful.cheers....
+Bungle2010 Facepalm*
For the people that do not see the Movies folder.
1.Open the Oculus File like he did in the video and create a file named Movies.
2.Now open the Movies file you just created and create another that says 3D (and for non 3D other videos create a My Videos folder)
3.Now just copy your 3d videos into the 3D folder you created.
Now Enjoy!!
+waveriderz how ?
I wanted to mention they changed the layout of the oculus cinema again. Now the categories are on the left and the first one says facebook videos.
I want to link the application which converts your video to. 3D VR
Thanks for the heads up, really appreciate it.
Strange Days is one helluva movie to watch in VR.
if my phone is cracked, will it affect my viewing experience?
hi I don't have the folders in my oculus folder do I have too add them myself?
+AcidIEdits
