  • I have been looking for many years for a 1976-1979 Ford truck. A Supercab in particular. I wish this was in nice shape but it is what it is and I live in the rust belt. I tell about my tentative plans for this truck.

      i thinks i have most of the parts....it is just deciding which engine and transmission to use.

    • @mickhulsen6825
      @mickhulsen6825 7 лет назад

      in my situtation it was a choice of perkins or cummins as thats whats easy to get where i live and a new process 5 speed outta a 90s model f series

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  7 лет назад +1

      i considered using that 3116e that i got running but seems like too much work to put in an engine i dont really want. overdrive transmission would be great as my choices for differential ratios is 3.73 or 4.10. your zf should be overdrive.

    • @mickhulsen6825
      @mickhulsen6825 7 лет назад

      my goal was to get rpm down at 2200 at 60mph or 100kph here so the new process zf 540 was a 1.1 in top and with 3.73 diff ratios would accomplish that but it would still pull as first i think is around 7.5 to 1. any way just some food for thought.. ill be watching this build

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  7 лет назад

      i see. i want to be able to do a little over 70 and i want the max rpm's to be no more than 2200 also. i can still manipulate the rpm with tire size but i am going to use it to primarily tow. so i dont want it to sit high. i was considering medium duty transmissions simply for how close the ratios are between each shift. the ones i am considering dont have these wide gaps like the smaller trans do. they tend to keep the engine in a better working rpm range and not stretching it to the max on each shift.

    my personal favorites of the older fords is the 1979 and the 1969-1972 trucks. although i am a big Mopar fan i also have my favorites in Ford and Chevy's. Get-R-Done.

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  7 лет назад +1

      the 79 is my favorite. i like the square headlights the best. i like all the older ford bodies from 1979 back. i have never been big on mopar. i like the old chevy muscle cars...not so big on the fords cars of the same era.

      @j.c.smithprojects  7 лет назад

      are reading my mind......however, if i make it a dually the whole plans get flipped around and instead of using 3/4 or 1 ton single rear wheel axles....we will use a f550 frame, s110 rear axle and a dana super 60 front on 19.5" rubber. how will i sleep tonight !? my mind will be going a mile a minute!

    What a great project but if you are going to go that far a full restoration would be great to see. A 10 speed on a Cummins would make a real nice truck, can't wait to see it happen

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  7 лет назад

      that is exactly what i am afraid of...turning this into an all out restoration. i do not have the skills it takes to to a restoration. .i think this needs to be a "good enough" truck for now. if it turns out good....maybe...just maybe we will take it apart and restore the entire body.

    Don’t give up on her , it’s not that bad , but I think it would be better with a power stroke v8 tho I know their problematic but run so smoothly.

    That truck is in great shape for it being in Ohio I'm originally from Pennsylvania so I know what happens to vehicles out there. My suggestion is look up salvage yards in southern California I have seen a lot of these in salvage yards out here.

    Probably the biggest clearance issue would be the height of a 5.9 and trans tunnel clearance, depending on what transmission you go with.

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  7 лет назад

      the small amount of measuring i have done looks like the height of the 5.9 is no concern. the transmission and the fan are the things a have some concern about. i want to use a engine driven fan....not electric. i have several options for transmissions....allison at545, mt653, 1000, 2000, spicer 6+1, rockwell 9 spd, eaton 10 spd, super 10, or a 13 speed. the smaller the trans...the better the fit but the smaller trans i have are geared with wide gaps between gears.

    The 79 ford pickup is the best looking pickup ever!!!!

  • @gosportjamie
    @gosportjamie 6 лет назад

    That's going to be an awesome project. I hope the Supercab turns out to be sound enough to make it work, I believe a lot of repair panels are available for these from aftermarket suppliers, of course they are aftermarket so whether they're any good or not might be questionable but I'm sure there are people watching who can give you chapter and verse on that. I think your idea of using the 6+1 trans is just perfect, having a crawler gear for tricky conditions with the 4wd should make it extremely capable...

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  6 лет назад

      the body is "ok"...not great not horrible but ok. i have wanted to do this for a long time.

  • @mikeduhm5754
    @mikeduhm5754 7 лет назад

    that superduty frame probably allows the motor to sit a little lower, most likely a lot of oil pan options for a 5.9. those transmissions are pretty massive compared to a C6 . lol

  • @farminwithfergusons

    put a 4bt or 4.1L perkins fer power. lighter smaller and with a little tuning as much power, but agreed with ya on using what ya got

    JC, so many things on my mind right now. 5:06 in morning and fighting some damn serious health factors but not your problem. More in thought about my guess on secrete engine, I am changing my mind to 3116 Cat with fuel problems I can't remember what i was thinking about front axle but there is a big clue like a tilt nose corn queen light duty... iI don't know (pain factor) but I believe that cab is what is with truck and too old for many applications. Question; Can you air bag that frime in this video for one ton application and use the club cab on it. Cab mounts are never a problem till they are so if mount can be fitted with your choice engine, nine speed transmission. I think you have a laith so drivelines may take you a minute longer to do the same thing and you don't waste money unless it makes you money! I love the color theme but not exact color (darker) with vanilla white (think 57 chevy belair) and like I said chose the engine that will do the job. Make exahaust while cab is off because some of these odd parts can be used up instead of spending just cause u can. I like I'm so things are used and not wasted. Would like either 9 or 10 speed used up cause it is light duty opposed to popular for this build. Make a decision and go with it. In the long run, you sleep better and that is important,wish I was helpful

    So, how did you finally get ahold of this '77 F250? I didn't catch that. I like these trucks, but I prefer the round headlight grill that you have already. It really does sound like a killer project! I bet the doors and bed are still available and semi-reasonably inflated in price. LOL These trucks either are, or should be popular, they are really good looking pickups.

      i had one just like this when i was in my early 20's. had to sell it to put a down payment on a house. i guess i annoyed the previous owner enough and the fact that he wanted to buy something and needed some dough.
