I tracked my FWD 2005 Matrix XR. First track day I upgraded the front rotors and brake pads to high carbon (yes only the front, the car has drums in the rear) and snagged some used Yokohama ADVAN AO48s from work. Drove to Streets of Willow and ran the entire day with no problems- had to wave plenty of people by. Second track day (a year later) I upgraded the suspension with some lowering springs, Tokiko blues, and a Front Strut Tower Brace. On the same track, Streets of Willow, I knocked off a whole minute of my time from the first track day and kept of with plenty of cars around the corners. On the straights I still struggled a bit since I didn't upgrade power/internals as I don't see the need for it. I still have the high carbon rotors and pads (replaced these some time ago), lowering springs, tokiko blues, and Strut Tower Brace. Car still runs happily as my daily beater and is fun around the twisty corners at over 190K on the odometer.

Nice to see a big RUclips channel do something with the Evos little brother.
Owning both of them at the same time is pretty cool. A '98 Evo 5 and a '07 CS3 Lancer "Elegance" as they were known in the UK, obviously the Evo is a different model and shape but the CS3 shares a lot in common with the Evo 7's, 8's and 9's and have a big cult following!
I love mine. It's the perfect daily. It's fast enough, and good enough on fuel to drive daily and just behind the Evo, the most comfortable car I have owned!
If you plan on future videos, some coilovers or even just some H&R lowering springs like I've got on mine help massively with handling and body roll! They can be great little cars!

To answer the question : if its a Japanese made car , then definitely yes .. my friends and i once took a camry SE to the track , excessive body roll , nose dive every time you brake hard and many other stuff but it was huge fun .. i would never do that in my CLS mercedes because im not sure about the outcome lol ..

The tires are actually give the most return for the investment when you really cash strap but still want to have fun. I am going to quote a slogan from Pirelli:"power is nothing without control." I used to paticipate a community organized autocrossing. When Ive done an upgrade from a tread wear 600 4 season tires to a 300 sport tires, the differnt is day and night. For a short 40 seconds autocross track, I can easily gain 3+ seconds a lap. The additional grip allows me to brake less, brake later, stay on power longer, put down power earlier and even shift gear less frequent. It is a joy to even thinking about it.

I know I'm about 2 years late and the Lancer is probably no longer in Gears and Gasoline's possession, but I think it would be a cool idea for a series to see how much it would cost to turn a beater Lancer into a track eating machine. You know, things like better tires and wheels, coil over suspension, better brakes, a few engine mods, stripping out the interior, giving it lightweight bucket seats, maybe even adding something like a roll cage or a turbocharger.

my first car(sold it a few months back and got a 2013 passat) was an 03 lancer es in a lot worse condition and I wanted to take it to the track as a sweet goodbuy but all the parts i had to put on it just wouldnt allow me to ); The listed 120 hp for those cars would be a dream with how beat up it was when i got it, even the exhaust system was falling apart so it was LOUD and backfired so much so i threw a mini wing on it to give people on the road some joy. Bitch burned and leaked oil, both calipers locked up at different times and started fires, purge valve was shot and heat welded, all 02 censors failed and were heat welded, and the alternator lit up in flames one night. $3k in repairs and sold it for $400. Bought it for $1.1k and had it for over 2 years. BEST CAR EVER

This was called the mitsubishi lancer cedia in India and we had this car from 2006 to 2013 .This was a D segment sedan and the previous gen lancer was sold as a C segment from 1998 till 2012. You see we didn't get the fancy All wheel drive tech in our lancer but It was still a good fun to drive car . The Lancer cedia which we had used to have 2.0ltr petrol engine detuned only to make 114hp in order to meet emission norms . This was half a lancer to you but still a full lancer to us in India . If mitsubishi was there today with the lancer still in production I would have loved to get my hands on one of these as my first car or maybe a used beater car to learn and live with.

As someone who has a 1999 Mazda Protege 1.6 that is built for amateur endurance racing, I can wholeheartedly agree with this. My car has been raced for over 10 years, and is still on the original engine @ 104k and over 10,000 race miles! Eco cars have very cheap consumables and burn through them at a much lower rate than bigger higher HP cars, which makes them fun at a low cost.
I'm currently at 2280lbs, but there is still a ton of stuff to remove and/or replace with sheet aluminum. I hope to get it under 2000lbs, it's basically a FWD 1.6 NA Miata LOL

The first time I went to the Nürburgring was with my daily 90bhp diesel powered Citroën Xsara wagon. did well for what it is, and made the 600kms trip back home without a single issue. Now I track a Peugeot 406 coupé V6, 210bhp, 1600kgs. Good brakes, good tires and good suspensions are all you need to have fun on a racetrack. Next mods are buckets seats, because it is tiring to fight against the car to stay on the seat while cornering.
For a cheap car with no power, cheap mods are well enough to make it the best fun you can have on a racetrack.

I own a 1998 Honda Accord LXI 2.3 5spd, 195k miles, and 135hp when new. Stock all season tires, stock brakes, stock suspension, stock everything, it drags it's feet (or tires lol) to 60mph in 10.8 seconds, but it takes corners like a champ, even on stock tires. I have not had the chance to track it, just street driving with no other cars lol. It barely understeers on streets, and on tight corners it oversteers so much the tail kicks out.
It'll only be better on coilovers, thicker sway bars, wider wheels and stickier rubber. It'll also be getting a full engine build, twin cam head swap from an H22, and a turbo, hopefully ballpark it'll make 400hp at the wheels. Then it'll really keep up with real cars at the track, around corners and on straightaways.
Cheap, slow cars are a blast to drive fast!
