- The miata is finally +turbo so it’s time to go back to the racetrack and see if Zach can run a decent lap at Willow Springs. Since last time we were at this track, the cooling system has been upgraded, the brakes have been upgraded, we’ve added an oil cooler, moved to a standalone ECU, and of course, added a turbo kit; to make an overall total of $17,500. Will all this money in mods be worth it or will we have big issues again?

$17,500 to go slower than stock and blow an engine. Sounds about right. Sad, but this is the most realistic series I've ever watched.

@@SpaceMissile pretty simple,actually. The people who made this car put a lot of thought into making it work the way it is - adding tons of random mods throws it way off balance,making it less efficient by a long shot. For example,the suspension might be technically “better”,but the stock one was made for the weight of the car,while the new one wasn’t adjusted at all.
@@bosknight7837 but consider - most people (like my gf) want a loose, floaty suspension. Her Sentra is like a boat, but my lowered GTI is stiffer than stock and holds a much tighter roll angle when cornering. the compromise is that I feel _every_ bump in the road and it drives her crazy.
so yeah, I get that manufacturers know their cars best, but they don't always design with sportiness in mind.

@@hubertkam7647 It was running R888s. Those are perfect tires for this. The thing couldn't even break bone stock Miata on bone stock tire times.
Just FYI the breather being capped is stopping all blowby from escaping, since the PCV valve is closed in boost. It's best to route the breather to the turbo inlet so the turbo actually draws some vacuum on the crankcase in boost (can be done through a catch can also). I've blown cam seals completely out due to this. Also - $20 to upgrade to the Mazda 323 GTX all metal PCV valve, a mandatory upgrade on a turbo Miata motor! . Looks like she's a ripper though!

Finally I have found these remarkable gelatinous mini-beasts! Now this truly is a special product; I have never found a substance so enticing and wholly original as the Haribo Gold Bears. Wherever I go, no matter what convenience store I visit no matter time of day or the position of the great celestial bodies, I can never seem to find these little gelatinous creatures. I am delighted to remark that the Haribo Gold Bears appear exactly as seen in the picture, however they are surprisingly intelligent and much more aggressive than I had expected. As a word of caution; do not eat the entire lot of these mini-beasts in one sitting. If you do, you may feel movement within your stomach and the taste of acid at the back of your throat. This is only the natural evolutionary response of the mini-beasts; their gelatinous structure allows them to come together and reconnect into a singular amorphous entity and it will do anything it can to prevent itself from being consumed by you. At this point you may feel a great wave of nausea lulling you to sleep, but you must not allow yourself to be seduced into slumber for if you do you shall not wake. The mini-beasts have at this point lowered their viscosity to mimic the blood within your veins and travel up into your spinal column and into your brain. You will hear a slight whistling sound, and this is the sound of the parasite enacting symbiosis. Don't panic

Or just turbo it and add coil overs and a sway bar and do nothing else other than performance wheels and you just don’t add a bunch of weight. Since ya know miatas are supposed to be light. Ide like to see the total weight he added to this car with all these mods vs how much power he added because I’m 100% sure that there is to much weight, even tho I like the build a lot.

I wish people wouldn't be so hard on Donut and Zach/Money Pit. It's been an incredibly well documented build series and I always enjoy watching it. What they've done is damn impressive. Are their better, more technical videos out there? Sure. Car Passion channel comes to mind. BUT...Why can't everyone have fun? Can we only receive entertainment from a select few?

The engine should still be healthy. Zack just completely plugged the vents for crankcase ventilation like a noob. Since PCV is blocked off, he pressurized the crankcase and is now forcing all the oil past the engine seals. Almost seems like he doesn't know what he's doing.

This series was amazing. Not only did we see the evolution of a Miata, but we also saw Zach slowly transition into an early 80s mechanic.

Taking extra laps when you know you’re blowing oil is unconscionable, especially on a track used by motorcycles. You could see it on your warmup laps.
I was thinking the same thing...any of that oil gets on the track, and it willl...bad for everyone’s day.

@@Donut I would pass on the caught can and just reroute it into you exhaust stream with a Venturi. That way you have one less filter/ can to service, and your Turbo only pulls in nice clean cold air.

Rotors and pads are hot after hot lapping for a full session. It’ll melt the pads or mess up the rear brakes if you leave the e brake up after a session. I always just turn my car off and leave it in gear.

I absolutely love the money pit series, and it’s cool to see what different upgrades work and watch the car improve. But I think at this point it’s starting to show that sometimes starting with a better platform is worth the wait instead of throwing buckets of parts at something cheaper. At this point money pit costs as much if not more than a C5 Z06, and that’s scary

If you put the top up, it can actually improve aerodynamics pretty significantly, might give you a better time. Is a hardtop worth it? Could be an interesting episode
Edit: I’m aware it won’t be *that* significant, but it would be interesting to see if it makes any difference at all in this case
thought the same thing, the track and the car are quite slow however, so it wont probably make that mch of a difference

@@R03333 I'm with you. A weekend at track school will shave the most time. It will cost a lot less than $17.5k also.
Aerodynamics lol, that really won't make any difference. They just need to make it run reliably and Zach needs more time to practice at the track.
Best Motoring did this with an S2000, a Z3M, a Z4, a Boxster, a 350Z Roadster and an SLK. The difference was negligible top up or down.

I've been on fire in the past with this exact issue on an MG Maestro Turbo. Many years ago now, but when I popped the bonnet it let the oxygen into the fire. I lost my eyebrows, eyelashes, and most of my hair. Not to mention my t-shirt was melted to my neck and my lips were so burnt they stuck together. The fire brigade wrapped my face in cling film with a straw to breath through. Thankfully I heal like Wolverine so no lasting scarring other than a bit on my neck when I get a sun tan.
Taught me a valuable lesson of not dicking about when seeing/smelling smoke.

Awesome shakedown day! Things I see for improvement, no heat shields! add heat shielding to protect your heater core hoses, wiring, brake reservoir. Also, Look into the Mazda Speed Miata PCV system. They use a factory catch can and a drain hose to the oil pan. Make something like that. Lastly, don't pull the parking brake after a session, it can damage your rear brakes, instead turn the engine off and put in gear. But leave the key on for 10min to let your fans keep running so your coolant doesn't heatsoak/pressurize and blow coolant into your reservoir. Goodluck!

It's not, since they added so much shit that the car clearly is less reliable and deduced its power/weight ratio.
He just adding turbo which is USELESS since installing turbo means you will make even more issue you will face than before. If he not installing it, I am very sure that he can beat under 1:40 very easy.
His track time was 4 second slower than 1st one due oil leak means your engine is in danger while 1st one he dont have radiator which means he cant go all out due his car is too hot for going all-out.
Stop doing useless mods, he just literally ruined his own project car that he builds for a year and now he just regret it for installing turbo

That stustustu is actually compressor surge and it’s not really a good noise. You can fix it by adjusting your blow off valve or her fancy with an anti lag system. A recirculating BOV would be a good investment. Also you’re valve cover breather is capped creating extra pressure pushing all that oil out. Vent it to atmosphere or plumb it into the turbo inlet.

Thank you for doing this. Sounds like unless you get lucky there’s no point in adding a turbo to your miata unless the engine is just completely rebuilt to be bulletproof and handle the extra strain
Yeah really think FI goes against the bulletproof simplicity of the Miata
relieving crankcase pressure will also free up some horsepower since the pistons are not fighting pressure on the combustion stroke... also be sure that the oil level is correct otherwise it will aerate creating more crankcase pressure. adding relief to the block would be most beneficial, rather than just the valve cover.
