@@60march One of the bone players I wonder? See below: Jackie Smith on the end of the trombones, Pete Smith, my oldest friend, Chris Pyne (god bless) and Bill Geldhart!
OMG. I remember seeing this on TV so many years ago and thinking Geez who the hell is that trumpeter. Then years later I got to see him at the Bulls Head (Barnes) with the Cliff Hardie Big Band and it was only after seeing the band a few times that it dawned on me, that was that amazing trumpeter I saw all those years previously.
one of the really greatest is not here anymore, i will miss him for ever, and feel so sorry for his family,Derek, mister lead, is one of the best we had in the music.me, ex professional trumpet player
I watched the great Johnny Madrid do this or a very similar performance in 1975. He was playing and steam was coming out of the bell!! This was fantastic!!!
God! I didn't think this was being recorded! I was sitting in the stalls! Spent the break and after gig back stage. What names, what faces! Jackie Smith on the end of the trombones, Pete Smith, my oldest friend, Chris Pyne (god bless) and Bill Geldhart! That was the night that Spike introduced Olaf Vas( one of the most musical people i will ever meet ) as "Swedish for Herpes" Saw the band many a time at Alexs' pub in Carshalton !
Trumpets: Derek Watkins, Alan Downey, Ronnie Hughes, Bobby Haughey, Dave Hancock (Greg Bowen) Trombones: Johnny Edwards, Pete Smith, Jack Smith, Bill Geldard (Alex Mcinnes) Alto: Bob Burns, Olaf Vas. Tenor Duncan Lamont, Henry Mackenzie. Baritone: Tony Symes. Piano: Don Innes. Bass Guitar: Neil Cameron. Drums: Harold Fisher.
Look at Alan Downey (middle trumpet and arranger @ 2:52. He kind of glances over to Derek as if to say "You nailed it Man" Great because of course Alan arranged the piece but knew only Derek could play it. Beautiful.
When arrangement, performance and soloist all come together. Christ. The thing which knocks me out is he makes it look so damned ..... easy ..,. especially in the upper register he still maintains the same calm appearance as if he's playing an octave lower ( unlike say, Maynard). Spike played just enough trumpet to appreciate what he'd just heard.
Craig, Thanks for posting this. It was a great show and I seem to remember a couple of charts by Harold Fisher, one with a latin title. Don't suppose you could post more if you have them. Jeff
Guess we must have bumped into each other. I was there every month as well back in the late eighties early nineties. Cliff had some amazing players. As well as Derek, Alan Downey, Guy Barker, Tony Fisher. Mark Nightingale always seemed to be there, John Horler, Harold Fisher on the drums. Then the front line often included Dave Bishop, Andy Macintosh, Jamie Talbot, Nigel Hitchcock.
Would LOVE to have this arrangement. One of the only songs I've heard that matches how I think a big band should sound and how I think the trumpet solo should sound with it. Anyone know where I can buy the arrangement?
He had a fabulous run, raised the bar in the trumpet world. The world was a better place because of him.
Simply wonderful. Must be amongst the greatest trumpet players of all time.
Derek played this at my father’s funeral in 2001. Epic send off! A legend playing for a legend.
Who was your Dad Robin?

Talk about some amazing chops….
Every time, it’s incredible. World class trumpet player. Truly incredible.
I used to play. This is other-worldly playing.
It is very hard to hear enough of Derek Watkin's playing. He earned and owned his spot on the trumpet podium. What. a .player.
Love this EVERYTIME I listen to it. Hearing Derek play never gets old.
What a great arrangement... Amazing playing by Derek, Always love to hear him play :) one of my Heroes
Derek Watkins sadly missed,RIP and Thank You for great music.

A truly incredible performance. I wish the arrangement was still about!
So glad I found this! Wonderfully done, R.I.P.
Lovely Derek, as always. You will be so sorely missed.....God bless.

+Marc Haring See what you mean ! I was there that night. Knew Downey well. It's how he reacted when things slotted !
This actual recording was played on the tribute for Derek Watkins on Radio 2 this week.
I'm most amazed that he can play that intense and high then revert back to a tasteful, round sound. Very impressive.
Morreram se todos, e parece que o bom gosto e a boa música faleceram também.

Just realised, this has been posted by Craig Wilde who can play a bit himself😉. Thanks Craig.
Fabulous.
What a player - sadly missed.
Derek!!! Damn!
Fantastic listening!
Could anyone in the history of the universe have played that piece as well?? I think not..
One of a kind!

Bloody Hell! - that's good!

Mr. Lead!
R.I.P Derek...

RIP Derek
Warm sound for a high note man!!!!!
He had his shit together and played the same way bottom to top, the way it should be done.
The best
Is this chart available for purchase?

All you need to do is search Google for "youtube downloader," and you can get it in a few seconds either mp3 or mp4 with the video.
Arrangement by middle trumpet, the late Alan Downey.
Fairfield Halls Croydon 1985
Yep :)
Where can I find the parts for this arrangement?
🌱🌸💚😀
Harold Fisher on Drums!?
Impossible notes on a Trumpet! Wow!
that man can fondle.
very few, my man, very few!
Steaming.
Surprise Spike milligan out a nowhere.
Spike Milligan could play a mean Trumpet too... but...he didn't even come close to Derek....
Unplayable up to then.
