I've played trumpet for 59 years and without a doubt this is the finest horn playing I've ever heard. The greatest solo and interpretation of any song regardless of which instrument.❤
After all these years I still can't believe how he could make that flugelhorn sing. Unbelievably beautiful... And the ease with which he blasts that trumpet 🙏🏻😮
I would pass out if I had to play a brass instrument that long and with that much energy. But then Derek Watkins is a legend, as is James Last. Derek's solo's are always awesome.
As a professional musician let me applaud Derek as simply the greatest flugelhorn player I have ever heard. He plays with such beautiful tone, effortless technique, and matchless taste. What a blessing he was to the world of music.
I love this song, and I am and always have been a fan of Maynard Ferguson, but I have to say this is my favorite version of MacArthur Park. Derek Watkins is amazing.
I was just on the phone with one of my buddies that played lead on the Last Kenton Band, and we both decided that Glen Watkins was one of the most beautiful trumpet players that ever played. So simply beautiful. RIP
This is awesome I've attempted to play this arrangement for the last 20 years or digit it close but no where as close as this guy! Derek you one in a million and that note at the end after playing flugel the. Trumpet bloody brill RIP one of my heroes! Unfortunately never got chance to see live with this band but did see him in Ted Heath BiG Ban led last ever gig in 2001 in London doing memories of you !
I agree … i was taught the cornet By both his father and his grandfather and actually played with him once when he dropped in at a band practice! He was just amazing !
Great !! It brings me back to one of the most unforgettable concerts of James Last I ever lived, namely the one on the 08/10/92 in Oostende, my hometown. I had just a very hard episode of my life behind me, on the edge of a depression even...! That concert with that fabulous trumpettist signified the introduction to a more joyful period in my life... THANK YOU DEREK, THANK YOU HANSI !!
Music is a wonderful healer , especially when it is played by such wonderful musicians . glad it had that impact on your life, I have been down that road , and discovered that , there is more to life than we imagine , maybe no pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, but something more precious
Be much better playing it as the composer wrote it. Too many embellishments, sorry to say he's murdered it. Supposed to be a smooth love song, not some wannabes jazz players exhibition piece.
@@fernmann7 Somebody puts a set of dots down in front of me, I play it as the composer or arranger wrote it. James Last was commercial at best and as to Derek Watkins being one of the best trumpet players of all time, I beg to differ. Average maybe. My own standard, mediocre at best on a good day.
@@coastie1961 Lol, this is why you aren't a famous, world renowned trumpet player then. You probably read the dots and sound like a total robot and wonder why no-one knows who "coastie1961" is
This is music, at a peerless level. How do some people get this good? He's just feeling it, every note, but seemingly (!) with no effort. I knew him, played with him, but I honestly didn't realise just how good he was. He actually transcends his instrument on this performance, which is a state of mind that every musician should aspire to. Also, the nicest man you could ever meet. What a loss. didn't
I agree with you 100%. He not only has technique and total mastery of his instrument. But he displays matchless taste which Maynard Ferguson never had. I have listened to Derek's interpretation of Macarthur Park over and over and will continue to do so with deep appreciation for this man's tremendous contribution to the world of mjusic.
... that was - all in all - an excellent concert (I think one of the best) in 1987 in East Berlin, where Hans acted with four trombones (Jerecho?), as if he wanted to bring THE WALL to collapse, what then arrived a short time later ...
This song was composed by a British man, sang by Richard Harris in 1968 (?). The song was written for Linda Ronstadt's sister; the baking of the cake refers to his long relationship with Linda's sister and her rejection for marriage. Their relationship started at a bench at the park and ended at the same place (years later). Salute
MacArthur Park It was originally sung by Richard Harris, but it has been covered a a bumload of other artists such as Maynard Ferguson, The Madison Scouts, and Donna Summer.

What power and control and range. Double high c last note could break glass
AGREED!
Derek was the absolute master of trumpet! ❤
I saw this live and I had tears in my eyes when he finished this beautiful song. What a musician he was. 😢
The great Derek Watkins! A monster player! R.I.P.. Brother
I was fortunate enough to play with Derek in 2004. What a legend, a true great.
I'm playing with him these days, "My Way" and "MacArthur Park"! Simply the best.
@@user-sp8eb6iz7f What?
I think that Derek Watkins and James Last are playing music in the sky, in this moment, for God that likes Their Music!
The Music of Heart!
You could be right franco , I am still mourning the loss of them both, magical
And maybe also with John Barry in one of the James bond themes 👌
How stupid! God gave them cancer for a private setting.
R.I.P. Derek. The Best Version that I ever heard. Espeacially the last note!!!
+Cheng Zaomin You mean an in-tune Double High C? Awesome
I have to say this is top three performances I’ve heard of this tune. Amazing. Such great tone on flugelhorn.
After all these years I still can't believe how he could make that flugelhorn sing. Unbelievably beautiful... And the ease with which he blasts that trumpet 🙏🏻😮

Ronnie Witherspoon yeah he did look pretty good
Did I see a Flugal horn, cornet and an F trumpet being used at times during this rendition?
I was working in a music store...I sold him a trumpet mouthpiece..... he was so nice! A lovely Welshman/ Musicians....like all of us!
A classic song played by great musicians. My wife hates this song so I play it when she is not home. I love this rendition by Derek Watkins.
+MrSoxfan56 My wife ditto. I also have to play this great song when she is absent,. This version is great.
MrSoxfan56 how can a human hate this song?
That’s grounds for divorce lol
An honourable pastime in ones wife’s absence sir
this is utterly hilarious - I'm not alone! my wife has heard me play the MF version so much that I can listen only under likewise circumstances
I love everything about this!!!!

You gotta be a bit good to have your own make of trumpet. The guy is the best UK player imo including ones that have gone before i.e Kenny Baker
very good, but for me too virtuosisms.
Fantastic imo better than maynard
