Incredibly beautiful sound. James Last has worked with top musicians. James Last knew how to make solos sound like hardly anyone. You want to bathe in the sound. James Last Sound is pesie for the soul.
@@dq7143 I am pretty sure James Last adjusted this piece of music to Derek skills... He was not the composer. But he knew, what his musicians loved to play and they loved to show their skills. Also, I believe you need to have a certain age to appreciate this music. I was 21 when this concert took place, and back then I was still playing music by myself, but also had a number of changes in my life. I didn't really pay attention to this kind of music. Nowadays I do.
Yummy. Omg that Flugelhorn - brilliant gentle mellow warm tone. Most trumpeters just attack this song and it ends up just being too harsh. This is like a lullaby. Beautiful artistry and just a master class in the “less is more” philosophy.
I have been a trumpeter for 51 years. I have never heard of this orchestra or the soloist. I assume they are not American, possibly German? I have to say, after listening to most versions of this song by jazz artists such as Maynard ferguson, doc severinsen, Stan Kenton and Woody Herman, this arrangement was a real breath of fresh air. I have been working on an arrangement for myself to perform this song and the way this song is arranged is exactly how I have been envisioning it. That is, more in line with the way the song was originally composed and arranged. I now will have to do some internet research to find out more about this orchestra and soloist. Thanks for posting.
Bill Smith - Wow, really? You have apparently been far too busy gigging if you have never heard of so great Derek Watkins, may he rest in peace. You have, however, almost certainly heard much of his amazing playing as he was the lead player on every James Bond motion picture from Dr. No to Sky Fall (23) and many other motion pictures. If Derek ever sat 2nd chair, it was certainly not because there was a better player on the band. He was a wonderful talent and great guy. You have never heard of James Last either? You have a lot of catching up to do as you have missed out on so much great music. James Last orchestras have always (and seemingly forever) been world class.
THIS DEREK WATKINS SUPER SUPERB TRUMPET MUSICIAN AND ENGLISHMAN ! JUST LIKE JAMES LAST ENGLISN / GERMAN ! LUV THIS WITH THE JAMES LAST ORCHESTRA ! ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL TRUMPET SOLO ALONG WITH JAMES LASTS'S ORCHESTRAL BACKGROUND ! ! ! LUV LUV THIS ! EXCELLENT EXTROIDINARY MUSIC !
Bravo, bravo veramente. I miei complimenti. c.castellano, italia A fantastic, fantastic trumpet. Derek Watkins is a refined, elegant, great artist who can convey from his notes those "emotions" that only the great international artists can do. Excellent execution and interpretation of the proposed song, which deserves a big applause to open scene. Bravo, really good. My compliments. c.castellano, Italy
Simply the greatest flugalhorn/trumpet player I have ever heard. And I've heard all the so-called greats. For beauty, power, control and taste, he is incomparable.
Interesting he is playing WITHOUT a microphone, quite superbly it must be said, but is he actually miming to his own studio recording? This sort of practice was ludicrously prevalent in German TV, sadly.
Yes, this is in the form of a music video for televising purposes, but he did record this all in one take, if I'm not mistaken, so just as impressive! But no, he was not playing where you see him miming.
Yes, that has been said of this song. and then there are also a group of people, myself included, that consider it a masterpiece. Most people that don't like it simply don't understand the lyrics. they think the lyrics are silly and therefore dismiss the song. The lyrics are written in a metaphorical context. However, the composer of this song said that everything in the lyrics are things he actually witnessed as he strolled through MacArthur Park. Whether you like the lyrics or not, putting them aside, the musical composition itself is truly a masterpiece. It's written in the form of a Rhapsody.
That was Dave Barry's opinion, and mainly based on the lyrics. If it was that bad a song, it would never have been arranged and performed by so many leading jazz artists.
One of the best trumpet players in the world for me, rest in peace Derek. One tone, one technique unbelievable.
Probably the best trumpet player ever.. I wish I had met him, and i would have told him what an inspiration to me he was.
Derek Watkins was a world class artist - unparalled!
So truly musical . This is the best version of this tune!
There is nothing more pure than the first 5ish minutes of this. Nothing.
My friend Derik in peace I will always love this song
Great sound !!!
RIP Derek.

Just casual clapping, like they CLEARLY have no idea what they've just witnessed.
Skilled trumpet players can appreciate the subtle nuances, level of difficulty, and expertise.

Bravo. It beats me how anyone could not realize they have just heard possibly the greatest trumpet solos ever performed.

LA MIGLIORE TROMBA DEL MONDO...
We still don't know the cake is?
Brilliant! Is this version available on CD or LP?
Unfortunately not, there's a studio version but without Derek playing and one live version with Derek on the Berlin Concert album.
Nobody does it better than Derek! RIP Derek.
@@lastforeverlast01 do you know where this was filmed?
❤️
Worldclass
Beat that!
+Jennifer Guy can't
Two words, Doc Severinsen.
Good Doc reference. But how do you really distinguish between two masters of their instrument?
Es gab viele Trompeter auf Erden. Aber es gab nur einen Derek. Und es gab nur einen Hansi. 1991: Wie ich mir diese Zeit zurückwünsche.
Unbelievable.

Interesting he is playing WITHOUT a microphone, quite superbly it must be said, but is he actually miming to his own studio recording? This sort of practice was ludicrously prevalent in German TV, sadly.
his wife said he always would play along
Not sure if serious.....

It‘s very obvious especially from the reverb of the strings that this was definitely not recorded live outdoors.
O musicista . . .
