Thanks for watching! I think I have a yellow variety from what was supposed to be a different sunflower. It's a happy mistake! I'll be looking for more colors!!!
This was my first year with the Mexican sunflower - following your success last year. I finally saw a hummingbird!!! I was overjoyed! Those plants are tough too. I didn’t think mine would survive when I transplanted them outside - they were weak and floppy, and my soil is one drought and heat wave short of being a brick (clay soil 😂). And then I was away all of July too. But wow - did they do well! I have to double up on plants now due to losing 50+ feet of garden, so I might pair my soon to be transplanted lilac with the Mexican sunflowers. My garden is going to have a lot of pairings next season….gladiolus, tall phlox and zinnias, iris, calendula and peony, hyacinth and sweet peas, milkweed and coleus, goldenrod and pansies….one hot mess!! 😂My raised garden beds might be the most organized with veg - but that English garden…yikes!
I hear ya on the brick soil. As we remove lawn, poor fj says, he feels like he's cutting the side of a mountain. We love tithonia and the amazing hummingbirds it brings. I'd like to find it in more colors. Next year will be more flowers than ever!
I think mine last year was hidden too long by competitors. It grew 6+’ and no flowers and thought it was a broadleaf weed and almost pulled it. Just before frost it popped a flower at the top 😂. We feed the hummers sugar water as there are few blooms when they arrive. I will say it’s work to keep the feeders clean and that there is a timing of when to start and stop. Many feed too late in the season and they stay too long. And on the other side in the south I think they keep them there too long by feeding and they have flowers blooming. What I have observed is the hummers visit less frequently as flowers bloom. Saving seed is so fun! I have to have containers at the ready though. What happens is I pluck them off and lay them in a dish thinking I will know or remember what they are. This winter sow I threw in some seed that looked like dust laying in one of those dishes, but I knew they were special if they were indeed seed. They were Spilanthes/eyeball plant/toothache plant. They all came up! It is an interesting looking bloom and I’m sure the deer and rabbits wouldn’t eat them unless they like a numb mouth 😅.
I was just watching another video that said to be careful of this flower because as beautiful as it is it prevents other plans from being able to grow. Then I see other videos that see it say it's a great fertilizer. I would love to know the truth about it. This plant prevented cucumbers and peppers from being able to grow in the garden because it is allelopathic
Hi there. I saw a similar video, AFTER I planted them in numerous locations. I did huge pots with them in the center, mixed with dill, fennel, parsley, gazania, and nasturtium for butterflies and caterpillars. Nothing in the pots did well. The tithonia grown with other sunflowers did great. I won't mix my caterpillars food in them again, but I'll still grow tithonia in mass amounts. I'll just create butterfly gardens without it! I would definitely keep it away from cucumbers and peppers. I'll stick to marigolds and calendula for those!

The flowers are beautiful and the bees loves them ! I’m in Southern California, we just went through a heatwave 108 and the flowers thrived!
@@joanne1713 I'm so happy you are enjoying them also!! I'll always grow them!
Lots of good info. Thanks! You can also purchase seeds for the varieties of Mexican Sunflowers that produce bright red, orange or yellow blossoms.

@@ourbackyardgardenSearch Engine Optimization. It’s so when someone searches on Google it will pop up in the top of the list. I’m sure FJ would know.
