I have some little butternut squash plants that i had in a paper towel like 4 wks ago...now they are little plants that I havent transplanted yet from their little pots...I live in zone 8b...I hope I can pull it off. Do you have any kind of tips of where or how I should plant these 3 little fellas? Theyre so cute. I live in a damn condo with no south facing wall.

You inspired me to grow my very own food forest 2 in fact one is in my back garden I have been grown for just about 6 years almost everything is in containers as I want to move and have my own piece of land to put that directly into the ground because where I stay the people around don't appreciate or like plants unfortunately and it is doing not too bad also very close to me as an unused piece of land myself and my son have been planting seeds in it for 3 years now lots of apple seeds cherry seeds plum seeds and some other seeds I wonder if it will actually grow into a natural fit Forest what do you think do you know anyone who has tried it in the past to just get an unused piece of land and put as many fruit seeds to see what happens please excuse any spelling mistakes as registered blind and use speech to a text one of the other reasons I am trying to grow my own food because of all the chemicals put on the fruit look at the gates Foundation with renew phone call appeal lead arsenic and only mostly bad stuff on it makes it more difficult to eat store bought food as it is laced with chemicals and toxic stuff growing your own as good and I hope my natural food forest in a few years actually starts growing some apples and fruit naturally

James, I’m a bit of a late bloomer-only started gardening three years ago. Today, I noticed some store-bought mushrooms that were past their prime, and as I gathered ingredients for my salad, I realized I was out of garlic and onion. I checked my garden and pulled an incredible garlic bulb and my first Walla Walla onion! It hit me then-nothing beats the joy of growing your own food. Thank you for all the inspirational videos you share. You've kept me going even when I felt like giving up. And by the way, if Tuck ever gets to be too much, he’s welcome to come live with me! 😊

I guess if money wasn’t an issue …. I would have a small room next to my kitchen that is a breakfast nook but also a green room. In the winter I can turn on the green room, have fresh food, AND warm up the house.
Right next to the garage. So I can start plants inside and also have a “work shop”.

If one grows (in raised beds or flatlander gardening) a raised row (barrow) method, then establish the W -E axis laid barrow, and plant the sun-loving (warm) crops with short height on the south side. The taller (and colder crops) with taller heights plant on the north side, as their height above the barrow won't harm them when they are small and growing past the barrow height. Their stronger, younger growth height further supports the higher plant stalk and vine at higher elevation. If you have an east-end vegetable (early morning sun, minimal afternoon and evening sun and heat) or west-end vegetable (late afternoon sun, and higher sun and heat) you can maximize those ends for growing opportunities as well.
If you barrow a raised garden with the N-S axis, then use the east-end and west-end concept as the east-side will be those early morning growing crops, while the west-side will be the late afternoon growing crops.
With the barrow method you have more growing surface with both sides and top of the barrow (and the barrow ends) to plant on, versus everybody at the same level. The barrow method is a garden food forest canopy concept in small size.

For gardeners who feel as enthusiastic and energetic as James, it's worth talking about the NPK. High N is for fast leafy growth, so you can move the seedlings into their forever home as soon as possible, and will be great for lettuce, swiss chard, kale, etc. High P aids in root development and flower budding, so, if your radish or beet has a lot of greens but not much of a bulb, there's not enough phosphorus in your soil (think fish - actually any animal eyes). High K ensures your your flower buds will actually flower and, if pollinated will ripen on time - in case you plant peas (that are not for shoots), or beans or cucumbers, or other fruiting plants. And by "high" I mean high-ER, but not as high as to burn your plants. :)

I'm in north jerz and it's been record-breaking hot where I am this year, thankfully we've been getting some rain finally. For those that don't know, good mizuna is the perfect green to go with your prized tomatoes on a BLT. After that it's just raising your own bacon and chickens for mayo... then growing some wheat for the bread flour, then you're a self-sustaining BLT farm!

I'm down in 8B.. barely B though. very close to 8A. My first frost date was about a month after we got a 21 degree freeze last year.
I garden over the whole winter and play the frost cover on.. frost cover off game... in containers.
I've got a month of 90+ degrees days left.. triple digits in the heat index measurement.
Everything I'm doing for fall gardening has to stay indoors until September.
Re birds and pea shoots.. that's what the barn cat is for.. he's good at that.

Learning so much! Love your channel. I have a question for any experienced gardeners though, when each of these crops is ready to be harvested..... You only have these things ( say, carrots) for like 2-3 weeks? So most gardeners learn how to can or something? I'm just trying to think what I'll do& it seems like you'd have to eat a lot of cucumbers during this month or carrots a few wks before your first freeze. Bc ... Wouldn't you get an abundance of one type of crop all at one time??

Your plants look amazing! I'm in the Hudson Valley of NY and my garden was hit hard by squash bugs that laid clusters of copper colored eggs on the leaves of the plants which hatched a load of bugs. I used neem oil and a combination of Shaklee's Basic-H detergent, water and peppermint essential oil to kill the bugs. the latter seems to do the best job. Do you have any other suggestions for something I can use and still keep my garden organic? I love your videos and, learn so much. Thanks for all you do.

We prefer beet greens to lettuce for salads. They are milder and don't get bitter. So delicious and nutritious!

You grow gorgeous food. Have you ever grown ground cherries? I never even ate them before but read about them when I wanted some fast berry harvest in a hotter zone

Yup, that has been a decision I have been trying to make. I may start looking for another pup, I want to do what is best for Tuck so trying to decide if another dog will help him or hurt him is kinda where I am at with it.

I find they push through a sprinkle of coco coir and a cotton sheet over the top. Keep well watered and boom carrots all germinated and you’ll have more than enough!

Yeah, your August is my September. In 9b Sacramento area, it's 100+ through August and early September. I will probably start some beets, carrots, turnips sometime at the end of the month or first week of September; but lettuce I will need to wait until mid-September.
