I set aside coneflower seed heads in a flowerpot to plant them in my backyard later. Probably 8 of them. The next day, I didn't think anything of the tipped over pot because we've had a lot of wind. Dang if those critters (squirrels) didn't run off with the coneflowers... all but one I found discarded like Cinderella's glass slipper among my bagged leaves. That way, all the seeds just jump out on the tarp and your fingers don't get hurt :D I am so happy to have found your channel!

I grew some in my back yard and i got a whole big tupperware bowl just out of one flour. My seeds were charcol grey. I roasted them with my lavender plants. So good.

I plant these sunflowers every year for my chickens. They love them as a treat. Plus it's fun to watch them pick each seed off the heads! thank you for being such an inspiration to me!
This is my favorite part lol. I love all the different varieties of sunflowers. I saved a lot of my seeds for future planting and for our bird feeders. The wildlife gets to my seeds so quickly, so I have to harvest them a lot earlier than most people do. Also, the humidity and rain causes them to mold if I leave them on there too long. Thanks for sharing! Those sunflower heads are gorgeous! I love that each seed has it's own flower.. 🌻🍃

And by the way..... i love vegetable gardening but you have really gotten me into all the other plants like trees and succulents. I live in the so cal mountains so many of the traditional Southern California gardening ways are much different for me when i get 3 feet of snow in one day but the next day can be 70 degrees. I found you originally learning about succulents and since failing and watching you i have now many survivors that flourish!! Thank you Aaron and Laura!, you are my inspiration that i can do this!!!!! Ps. So glad to see Aaron learning names and loving the garden more and more, you have me following indefinitely.
Oh my, those HUGE sunflowers, so beautiful. Couldn't help but watch the lady bug crawling on your jacket at your shoulder :-) and yes to roasted sunflower seeds. Yum!
When you mentioned in your tour yesterday that you were going to just leave the seeds for the birds, I was surprised that no one in your family wanted them. I am glad to see that you guys are enjoying your harvest too! Boy those sunflowers are impressive!
OMG I love sunflower soo much to purity on the soil to clean off radioactive and toxic metals off on the soils, I really want to garden it next to my plants in the fields.
I planted two varieties of sunflowers this year. One was Busy Bee and the other was Velvet Queen. The Busy Bees were very small and didn’t produce flowers for very long, but the Velvet Queens were amazing! The petals were reddish and gold and they blossomed for a long time. I have watched goldfinches eating from them for quite some time. There probably aren’t many seeds left for us to harvest at this point but you inspired me to go check! Now I know how to harvest the seeds, so I am thankful for that! I’ll have my nine year old son help me to check and it will be a wonderful learning experience for him too.
Awww, Benjamin is the adorable helper every mom needs. So sweet. What a great harvest of seeds. Those plants survived all the crazy weather you had & still were so heavy with seeds. Wow Factor!
If you’d care for an SLP idea, when he gets a little older, you could have Benjamin use the seeds to practice “writing” letters and even spell his name. Sensory activities such as this are a great pre-writing experience. He is a joy to watch!
Wow! That was amazing! My husband and I planted sunflowers for the first time ever, at the end of April of this year. We surprised a lot of people (ourselves included), at how tall our Mammoth sunflowers grew….in 3ft by 12in pots…a couple of them grew to 8ft tall, This has been one of the top 5 best experiences of my life.
Wow! I didn't know how a sunflower could give so much! the beauty of just being a garden flower, then food for the fowls of the air, and nourishment for people too! Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful and educational video!
I thought my chickens were weird when they didn’t immediately attack the sunflower head. They were terrified of it 😂. Two days later I guess they decided it was harmless and devoured it.
Sent a picture of how big the sunflower heads were to my husband. He said he has never seen ones that big! I told him "this is Laura now , come on"!!! Love you guys, Benjamin melts my heart every video he is in such a cutie!!
Guess you really have to love working with the earth to think this video was fun watching and thoroughly satisfying! Thank you for your channel! One of my faves for sure....
This was very interesting! You are such a wealth of knowledge, Laura! Question: Do you individually shell each seed when you use them for salads? It seems very labor-intensive. Benjamin is such a cutie.
I love that I could hear the birds in the background while you harvested. Thank you for showing us how it's done - I had no idea the flowers were the tiny pieces inside the head!
"Hey, I grew that. You should enjoy it." 🤣 So surprised at the inside of the head. It looked foamy. I've never seen that before so that was a real treat. I bought some seeds last year to plant out this year and never did. But this looks so fun, I'm going to start planning where to place them. Any tips? Are all sunflowers harvestable do you know? Or are some ornamental (thinking about your Suncredibles).
First of all that was a good save to catch the flower. That lil boy is so entertaining to watch. You talk to your chickens like I talk to my dogs and the birds in my yard. Lizards too. Too much time by myself I guess 😂.
I give my young grands deep trays of beans to play with. Scoops and small containers etc. add to the fun. We also pull out little dump trucks. I lay out an old tablecloth on the floor and lay all this on top. Fun tactile activity! The seeds would be just as fun too!

Boy did I need this video! Have several cut heads of sunflowers drying and wasn't sure what to do next. You always seem to know...
You can roast them, and eat.
Maybe soak in salt water first?

@@ericmoore4575 Hello🙋♀️ Is very cold, where i'm from. Is a cold fall, not a gentle one, and my city is on lockdown 🌧️☔
@@MadalinaPVilcu the weather over there is good so where are you from
Oh my, those HUGE sunflowers, so beautiful.
We use to use these seeds or dry rice for our kids to play on a mat with their toy trucks and tippers. Easy clean up and do tactile.
Great tactile activity, Hannah!
I'd love to reach through and try some sunflower seeds - they look so plump and yummy.
Oh my word...I have never ever seen a sunflower head sooo big. Laura you are amazing ❤️
That was so interesting. I have never seen the removal of seeds before.

Not only is it pleasing to the eyes and soul, it feeds the birds as well. Wonderful!
That beetle/bug cruising on Laura's shoulder and up her hair 😂😂😂 just cute.
Around minute 12
Yeah! I think it was a lady bug! Glad it was a friendly bug ☺️🐞🐞🐞❤️
A lady bug!!!🐞🐞🐞🐞🐞
Haha
Wow! That was amazing!
My husband and I planted sunflowers for the first time ever, at the end of April of this year. We surprised a lot of people (ourselves included), at how tall our Mammoth sunflowers grew….in 3ft by 12in pots…a couple of them grew to 8ft tall,
This has been one of the top 5 best experiences of my life.
Will your friend with the pigs be able to feed the “ empty” sunflower heads to her pigs??
How are you doing today William and how is the weather over there
Sent a picture of how big the sunflower heads were to my husband. He said he has never seen ones that big! I told him "this is Laura now , come on"!!! Love you guys, Benjamin melts my heart every video he is in such a cutie!!
“Mamma do it by herself” 😂😂
Guess you really have to love working with the earth to think this video was fun watching and thoroughly satisfying! Thank you for your channel! One of my faves for sure....
....."dust in the wind....." 🎼🎸 couldnt help but sing the tune when she said that
9:25 The lawn is absolutely perfect. Although that has nothing to do with the sunflowers, bravo!
This was very interesting! You are such a wealth of knowledge, Laura! Question: Do you individually shell each seed when you use them for salads? It seems very labor-intensive. Benjamin is such a cutie.
Yes, it would be very labor intensive! Factories have machines that do it for us.
I was wondering the same thing when she said she uses them in salads.
I love that I could hear the birds in the background while you harvested. Thank you for showing us how it's done - I had no idea the flowers were the tiny pieces inside the head!
They would put stockings on the flowers where I'm from to prevent the birds from eating the seeds 😅
But who has stockings anymore?

That sweet little boy voice...priceless😀
And now all of Laura’s neighbors will have volunteer sunflowers from the birds taking the seeds to eat elsewhere. 😂
Yea 😂😂
I’d feel so lucky to accidentally have a surprise giant sunflower
Beware of Aaron the surprise sunflower killer lmao
Lovely garden at your house

Hello from Canada and Canadians here?! 🇨🇦❤️🌷
I don't know why I thought that those sunflowers were feeling like they are bread when Laura was tearing them😅
I give my young grands deep trays of beans to play with. Scoops and small containers etc. add to the fun. We also pull out little dump trucks.
I lay out an old tablecloth on the floor and lay all this on top. Fun tactile activity! The seeds would be just as fun too!
How do get stung by a wasp and mention it so casually? A sting would’ve sent me into the house for at least the rest of the day lol
