    The way they are invasive is if those very tall stems fall and come in contact with the ground, they root very fast and they continue to do that... thats how they become invasive. They definitely spread if not contained like yours, especially bad in the wind.

      perhaps, however if you read the long videos discretion under the video, that does not make them invasive. or Tomato plants would be on the list lol. these are used for chop and drop and compost tea, so if you are maintaining them and utilizing them as intended, they will never have a chance to flop over and take root. I believe anyone growing plants should be making there own fertilizer. Thanks for your input.

      @@TheFrugalHugelGardener Where we are tomatoes are annuals and Mexican sunflowers perennial so tomatoes are killed off, Tithonia Diversifolia is not.

    I’ve seen vids from tropical Hawaii and some folks had trouble controlling the spread. It was everywhere. I live in the Northeast US and am gonna give them a try this season. I think our wacky New England weather will keep them at bay, similar to yours.

    How did you get the plants? Also, there is a video where a person is cursing them as they take over his property... is that a different cultivar?

    Do you know if they grow well in crappy soil? I have a spot in my yard that I cannot get anything to grow. It gets tons of Fl sunlight there, which could also be my issue.

    Mine accidentally spread when I use them as chop and drop. When the stems are cut and taken some else as mulch, the stems will root. Maybe that’s why some people call them invasive.

    How long does it take for Tithonia to grow??? I’ve planted mine about 3 weeks ago I do see growth but it’s not anything substantial just yet. Not sure if I planted wrong or what.

    • @TheFrugalHugelGardener
      @TheFrugalHugelGardener  Год назад +1

      that depends, did you plant a plant or cutting? a cutting will grow leaves fast, but it takes a few months for the root system to mature.

    I think most people have seen the swamp sunflower, which spreads by rhizones. They get them mixed up and think they are Mexican sunflowers.

      Where did you get that info from? It is not a sterile plant. You can buy seeds for it at Walmart or Home Depot. It is one of the easiest US natives to grow from seed. As easy as a melon, squash, or sunflower.

    Just bought some seeds. Got ripped off then. I might try n grow them. Although in NSW Australia they are invasive weed. So called because their seeds spread so far according to the NSW gov website.
    Very confusing as they have the same name.
