    To me the old and new road plates are two completely different things. I love both but the new ones don't replace the old ones. Especially because of one very obvious thing: NO CURVES! I now often put the new roadplates on a classic green baseplate so I have grass around it. The new plates are great for a scene with a few sets but for a city the old ones are the best.

    If you want, you can use more grey plates to extend the lane's width, or connect road plates alongside each other (connected with the white stripe tiles) for double the width. This is useful for wider vehicles like the Speed Champion sets.

    I prefer the old ones. The new ones look too much like shiny plastic and even though they give you more ways to work with them, I appreciated being "limited" by the standard pre-made design of the old baseplates (it felt "safe" to build on them though maybe it's also my laziness speaking here).

    The old baseplates are at least multi-purpose, with the ability for them to be used as runways for large lego aircraft sets. The new roads, while they are a significant improvement, restricts them to being used as roads only.

  • @greggarave8214
    @greggarave8214 2 года назад +47

    It fits the system. I used to love base plates. It was so cool to get them in a set when I was a kid, it felt like a big deal to me. However, I think the new road system is better in the long run. I understand other AFOLs complaints and I’m not saying they are wrong, I just think that the new roads will be better going forward. Just being more durable alone is a huge improvement in my opinion. I just wish they had switched to this system much sooner.

      I agree on the sentiment. When you got that old fire station. You pulled out the base plate and felt like you just got something huge. Hindsight you notice how much space those plates took it was ridiculous.
      This new system will allow kids to build more in a smaller space. Unlike with the old plates.

    I had a bunch of the old road (and grass, mountain etc) plates as a kid and build a lot of cities out of them. They're definitely dated - large, cumbersome, weirdly thin, not very modular. This new system looks like it has a lot of possibilities, they just need to expand it with more options like curves and forks. Always bugged me that they don't have attachment points on the bottom (I mean I'd rarely use them but still) and those rounded corners always leave a slight gap... plus no matter how you connect them if your plates are on carpet they'll easily come apart because they flex so much.

    I use the old road plates to display the 8 wide cars. I use the new road plates to display 6 or 4 wide cars

    Future is vehicles with driver and co-driver, 8-wide, as in Speed Champions and trucks, vans... And they fit better on old ones. So in all new ones - no.

  • @beeble2003

    The new roads seem far too glossy, but also too narrow -- in your demo at 1:10, two trucks would have to almost stop to get safely past each other, which is fine for a small residential street but not for anything that's expecting truck traffic.

    • @koloth5139
      @koloth5139 2 года назад

      There are a thousand ways to fix the width of the roads though. That is the thing working in this new design's favor is that it is extremely modular. The old road plates were one size fits all. This is a better system all around.

    • @Nikioko

      @@koloth5139 That is not how it should be. Problems should be fixed by the company, not by the customer. And this system isn't even compatible with baseplates. Say for someone like me that has a small city already built, would I need to change out the creator building base plates so that everything aligns? At the moment the road is about a half stud taller so there's a dip down from road to sidewalk. Am I doing something wrong haha!

      That is one option, though it would end up being expensive and time-consuming to replace every baseplate. Jangbricks suggested using foam core boards underneath the baseplates so they are flush with the road. That sounds far more practical.

      Scrap everything :P Plates and baseplates don't have the same height so you will always have the problem! For me it won't be an issue since I will be building all my buildings from scratch, using regular plates!

    I see what your saying. The new plates are better than the old ones.
    I dont need them since I made brick built roads already.

    Is the new system cheaper? Or would you go with the old if u can’t justify spending tons on Lego??

      I will never go with the old system due to the lack of space in my LEGO studio. Not to say that it is cheap though. But in time, the old system will get more expensive as is usual with out of production highly sought out LEGO products.

      because alot of people have existing sets or displays.. wich the new ones are not compatible with.. also the lack of curves, not wide enough lanes, double the price, general lack of concept other than milking new customers whilst absolutly ignoring the ones that built up the company

  • @amilo5
    @amilo5 2 года назад

    The new road plates are just trash. 8 studs are not wide enough for most modern vehicles. No curves make them look dull and unrealistic. They are much more expensive. You can't connect them to old baseplates. Ramps are wasted LEGO pieces. And the list goes on and on and on and on ...
