Yes, my thoughts exactly. I'm not moving onto these but for a smaller setup, or for in front of a row of modulars on a shelf, it's a great system to try!
That's the best integration of base plate-based buildings with the new road plates I've seen so far. And it works just the same for plate-based buildings from Creator and City sets. Very well done!
You've done a much better job of showing the versatility and attributes of the new road plate system than the marketing team at LEGO. Even with their missed opportunity of how the were incorporated into the sets that they introduced that included them! I was not a fan of them but am now have had a change of heart. Well done and thank you!
I’m not quiet convinced to switch to the new road system when I look at the cost of the new road system and the added cost of having to use more plates to elevate the buildings and to make the road wider to accommodate most vehicles. But it looks like a great solution for the new road system. Thanks for the tutorial. Happy Building.
This is really great. I’d recommend checking Jang’s as well as both of you gave great solutions to these new plates! I would love to see eventually convert your city to these over a long period of time as they offer a lot more customization than the baseplates.
Great effort - and great solution to the new road plates... but as i've said on other RUclips channels, the fact that you have to come up with solution tells you that they are not really fit for purpose. The curved curb looks great, but for me, two plates high is too high for paving - compared to a minifigure that is effectively a knee high curb... also, can't agree it's cost effective - what is it, £25 for a a set, which to make wide enough you need to double up, then add the cost of plates to raise everything to the right level... that's quite an expense... but more than that, for me personally - they look ugly. I really don't like the patchwork of tiles you need to make them. Again, just me - if people like them, great, maybe i'll be able to pick up the proper road plates cheaper on the secondary market! haha
There was always going to be this awkward period when transitioning between the two systems, but if Lego are properly committed to this change I imagine compatibility between sets and roads will become more straightforward. The final straw/nail in the coffin will be if they move to this system for future creator expert (18+) modular releases...
Hello again. Glad someone finally did a video on this. People thought i was crazy when i said a base plate on top of a regular plate r the same height as 2 plates together. Ur the first to do it right on a video. This will forever be know as robinhoods new roadplate system
Yes, it's the same spacing as all of my raised areas like the Marina. I was frustrated no one had picked up on it so I bought some new roads just to share this with the world, haha!
Right!! I did a video demonstrating the base plate on top of a regular plate for the new road plates, last week of December right before they went on sale. However I breezed over it so quickly due to: A. I assumed everybody ALREADY knew! and B. I was cramming other content into the same video and it was a looong video. I love this a lot and agree that the elevation between street level and first floor level of the buildings are THE takeaways from this system. It looks really nice, in fact a huge improvement over the normally flat landscape. The ability to add street level drains as well as drop the crosswalks to street level is just cool! Thanks for posting!
@@RobinHoodBricks I had decided to use the after market base plates that were 1 plate thick to build my modulars on and just could not wrap mu head around how to adapt your system to the curbs, but it turned out really quite easy. Now I can use your system to adapt those road bases to either base plate style. Thank you again for putting this out there.

This way of using the road plates is fantastic! The Robin Hood system is the best system I have seen so far, and I think it is also great for smaller city's, and the customization options are endless! Good job Robin!😃
3 weeks ago I discovered this video, and indeed this channel, when I learned LEGO introduced these new road plates. After this I got interested and watched the MOC playlist for the fast food corner. And today (3 weeks later), I reached this video again through watching the complete journey playlist (so over halfway!)! In that time, I dug up my 30 year old LEGO, rebuilt the first 'big' set I got for my 7 birthday 28 years ago (Pirate Forbidden Island 6270), created a small MOC myself (a Japanese style vending machine) and ordered the needed bricks on Bricklink, as well as a big modular. I guess I'm back into LEGO, haha! Thanks Robin!
I haven’t seen anyone do the road system like this yet with the drains. To the point where i planned on doing my own lol. Im very proud of myself for thinking of an idea on your level of thinking
6:36 A suggestion: You could have made a one stud wide "kerbstone" of a different color indicating a different material and creating a contrast to the sidewalk. The easiest way would probably be to do a two studs wide extension, using a plate of the intended color, and then lining that with one stud wide smooth plates.
Hello Robin, fantastic update! Finally someone who comes up with great ideas on how to use the new road plates instead of just complaining for complaining. I have started using them in “problem areas” where I simply don’t have space to accommodate the 32x32 grid, like side alleys and semi pedestrian areas. I will certainly try your sidewalk system, love the ramps and sewerage. However, for more stability I fixed the road plates on 48x48 baseplates and moved the buildings on old brick plates which are 3 high - so that should work with your system. It also resolved an issue I had with a railroad crossing... Will post some pictures on Instagram when time permits. As always, thank you for your inspiration!
Hi Alex. Yes, a pedestrian area is another great use for them. People moan but with time great systems will be developed. At least street features can be added IN the streets now!
The Robin hood bricks system has made me love the new system even more than I already did and is X100 better than the old system as it looks cleaner and more realistic plus it can use up those random old plates from our collection that we have no idea what to do with I gonna try and use this awesome system in my city thank you so much Robin hood bricks.
Great techniques here! Since these road segments accept studs on the bottom, they really lend themselves to being used for a raised highway. Haven't seen anyone do that yet, though.
I love this. That´s the essence of Lego, creativity. A lot of People were very negative about the new road system. But I think it looks much better and realistic with this idea. Thanks a lot for sharing.
Even though I don't have a city, I'm starting to change my mind about them. It's all about adapting or dying. You've managed to make these road sets seem more appealing.
This was the first videos of yours that I ever saw. Glad I found your channel.... been ploughing through your back log of videos. Loving them. Good-Good!
Thank you for this video. Always good to see other people's ideas, and this is probably my favourite method of integration so far. I know you have said that you don't intend to replace the existing road plates in your city, but would you use them in any as-yet undeveloped areas? My biggest gripe With the new road plate system is actually the yellow speed bumps. The bumps don’t seem to be designed with the low clearance city cars in mind which is really annoying, especially when you consider they come together such as the Shopping Street set.
I have the old baseplates for the undeveloped areas so probably not. I hate those yellow speed bumps. They are kinda recessed too but if you raise them they'll ground a car!
I thought you'd like it. It looks great and it'll be nice to see it in action across a whole city district. I'm not using it in my city as it'd be too big a job to replace what I have. Incidentally I have more ideas on this system that I didn't cover in the video that you might be able to use!
I have only recently got back into lego and have none of the older style road plates. So I am 100% signed up to making these new ones work and have been collecting a few sets as I go. Really like the double raiser approach detailed here although I was surprised by the "floating method" of connecting just the edges. The double road is an interesting idea, it does however eat space despite it looking and feeling cool! So thanks for the great guide and, as a fellow Brit with the name Robin, I feel it's appropriate I adopt this method :)
You could honestly do all sorts of crazy stuff with this. Streetside parking, tramway integration, level crossings, multi-level road systems like the ones in Chicago, etc.
These things may be more expensive than normal road baseplates, but the customization is staggering, just as it should be with Lego. I was hoping to make a Lego city one day, and I'll probably use these unless they come up with something better by then.
I’m watching this in 2024 (three years late), but I absolutely love your design here. Well done! I’ve got a handful of sealed Modular Buildings and I’m about to start building my own Lego city street, so I’m looking at different ideas. I’ll probably go with MILS plates for sturdiness and flexibility (in terms of changing my layout), but you’ve given me a lot to think about. Thanks!
I love the new road plates and the ideas you’ve come up with have elevated my love even higher. I think this 15 minute video will help to dispel the new road plate haters and their short sightedness.
I'm not a fan of these new road plates as sold by Lego, but you've turned them into something beautiful here- I wish they'd been showcased like this from the beginning!
Very well thought through. I think this is the first video I watched and think these new plates are actually a better solution. Still spendy, but very flexible.
I much prefer this new system because of the flexibility it allows. I am just buildng my city and think that, done your way with two plate high curbs, looks great. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and ideas with us.
You've done a fantastic job here. I like the curb you've implemented; it is smashing! However, I still much prefer the old style baseplates over this new style.
Lego still have a way to go with the new system, but I think this video shows a lot of possibilities that the old road plates didn't have. I think I will need to make some roads on the sub level of my city so I can use some of the techniques you show in this video. It looks really good with the high sidewalks and storm drains.
You definitely have the best idea to make this work with modular out of all the youtubers! I’m still sticking to the old road plates because to me this is still more expensive than the old road plates. I’ve been buying up the old road plates like crazy! Well within what I can afford! 😂😂😂 thanks for sharing!
Gonna be honest, I've seen lego experiment with different road systems before, I have some of the old road baseplates, I've got some roads which are *just* the road, which fit that system in terms of width, and yeah, looking at that, I can definitely see the benefit of doing it that way. I'll just count myself lucky that I've not looked into building my own lego city yet, so I can eventually use that system or whichever improvement on it comes next. Of course, the interesting part is going to also be: if people do decide to use these for their cities, how you'll make elevated highways work. The ramps will probably need to be different, I'd guess. Editing to add: this is the sort of road I meant with roads which are just the road: www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=30402px1#T=P&C=10
@@RobinHoodBricks ah yeah, that's a fair point. It probably wouldn't be entirely ideal, especially for curved ramps, and it'd definitely take a rather decent amount of finagling, but it could be possible. Also, it's of course worth noting that the same problem, if not greater, exists with the classic baseplate as well.
I wanna thank you for this video it helped me tremendously with my city I just put together. I really like the detail of having the curb throughout the city! Thank you again Mr. Hood!
@@RobinHoodBricks is there away to contact other then here I would love to show you some pictures of my city and see if you have any other ideas to improve my city
Wow Robin this is brilliant and as always full of detail as expected by your level of extra detailed build. It's clean and effective. Thumbs up for the Robin Hood Brick System!! Long life to the Robin Hood Brick System!!😅😅I'm kind of regretting buying my last 4 old road plates... Cheers my friend👍👍
I first was extremely sceptical of these new road plate systems. I’m not a Lego city builder, but I didn’t see how they could work. But since watching this video and a video by Jangbricks , i realise the seemingly endless options for the new road system. They definitely seem more in line with Lego’s ethos, especially for play. I also think, as pointed out by Jangbricks, make it so much easier to make bridges and raised roadways.
If I were starting now I'd use the new ones definitely. They are so flexible now for side streets, parking bays, different numbers of lanes, crossings where you want them. I like it!
Hi Robin, I love what you did with the new plates! I must admit, it still takes some getting used to having a sidewalk two plates high, but im very much impressed with the end result! We have a couple of the new sets, so i will again be experimenting with them going forward using some of this technique!
Well you could keep them one high but the plates under the modular would be loose and the connections between the baseplate and pavements would be weaker. Maybe try that!
Nice one Robin! If you're going to do what every one here is suggesting, whe'll all have Bricknottingham vids for probably the rest of our lives! Now, just another idea I had seeing you do all this, just for all the enthousiasts out there in the world that would like to start using those plates: If you use the 'wide lanes' (a complete width per lane), you can even add some pavement or greenery in between, connected on top of studded connector plates. Could be nice for a boulevard or something...
love this video, two observations. The road is dark grey and the sidewalk tiles on modular building are dark grey. Now I need to change out the sidewalk to light grey to have the contrast. Secret ways that lego get you to buy more legos.
Excellent video, thank you. Just adding roads to my small city; and as i don't have the old roads, I'm great with how they work and look. You're suggestions will be put to good use shortly. 😁👍
Finally someone who also thinks two plates are a good height difference between road and sidewalk/pavement! When I was planning my roads I tried out many different versions but the two plate height definitely won by a landslide - not least because of all the lowered curbs and storm drains and everything that can now be added so easily. I'm even beginning to think I could incorporate the new road plates in some parts of my city if it ends up being cheaper that way. It's kinda funny how all the Lego channels now come up with ways to make the new roads work. But I somehow wished Lego would come up with a way that at least made sense, too. It just annoys me that in the official sets that came out with the new roadplates there just is no curb and there is a step DOWN from the road to where people walk. That might be ok as a soft shoulder for a country road somewhere but definitely not inside a town or city. I have accepted that I might need to change official sets to fit into my specific standard but I should not need to change official sets to not get a headache looking at them.
Have to say I'm not a huge fan of these baseplates due to their overall cost, but they are definitely more customisable as you've proved here!
Yes, my thoughts exactly. I'm not moving onto these but for a smaller setup, or for in front of a row of modulars on a shelf, it's a great system to try!
you can always buy a base plate for $5 off bricklink

An excellent system! I'm glad to see that the new road plates are compatible with the modulars.
Yes. I almost want to use these to show what can be done but I have so much else to do, and I've already got the older baseplates!
I just bought these road plates for my marvel Modular’s and this is definitely the best way to make it look nice thanks so much for this video :)
Great to hear. Have fun!
Very well thought through. I think this is the first video I watched and think these new plates are actually a better solution. Still spendy, but very flexible.
Yes, a lot more money but a more bespoke result!
I much prefer this new system because of the flexibility it allows. I am just buildng my city and think that, done your way with two plate high curbs, looks great. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and ideas with us.
Sounds cool!
You've done a fantastic job here. I like the curb you've implemented; it is smashing! However, I still much prefer the old style baseplates over this new style.
Thank you very much. Yes, I think I so too, but for a display row of modulars this is very useful indeed!
Lego still have a way to go with the new system, but I think this video shows a lot of possibilities that the old road plates didn't have. I think I will need to make some roads on the sub level of my city so I can use some of the techniques you show in this video. It looks really good with the high sidewalks and storm drains.
I think so too. A separate district and both systems would be awesome!
You definitely have the best idea to make this work with modular out of all the youtubers! I’m still sticking to the old road plates because to me this is still more expensive than the old road plates. I’ve been buying up the old road plates like crazy! Well within what I can afford! 😂😂😂 thanks for sharing!
I appreciate that. I'm sticking with the old plates too. I dread to think of the cost of updating my city for this system!
So many amazing roads you can make, you could also make bus stops which come out into the big road and have a bus shelter on it
There are loads of possibilities!
Very interesting solution to the problems with the new roads. Great video as always!
Glad you like them!
The ramps should be able to use just these road plates mounted at an angle I would have thought!
This looks great. Very impressed how realistic this looks
Great to hear!
I wanna thank you for this video it helped me tremendously with my city I just put together. I really like the detail of having the curb throughout the city! Thank you again Mr. Hood!
You're very welcome. I made it with people like you in mind!
@@RobinHoodBricks is there away to contact other then here I would love to show you some pictures of my city and see if you have any other ideas to improve my city
Excellent presentation of the road plates. Brilliant ideas that I will definitely be duplicating in my city. Thanks.
Great. Have fun!
I love the fact that this allows my speed champions and speed champions Mocs to fit perfectly into my Lego city with the city and modular sets
The roads are too narrow, for sure, without this!
It’s a excellent idea, because you can use your modular buildings as it is! 👍
And it's a LOT cheaper than some other methods!
Thank you very much!
Fantastic!!!loved they way you adapted them!!! I will try it with my LEGO CITY
Please do!
@@RobinHoodBricks Bridge coming soon😏😉
That's a great solution, the double layer pavement looks very smart. Perfect for anyone just starting a city or with enough free time to redesign one!
Yeah, it would be VERY time consuming to be a whole big city this bespoke!
I'm amazed how fun road construction will now be with all these new tricks i've learned. 👍
Yes, parking spaces, crossings, all sorts. It'll need good planning though!
Yes, there is a lot to be said for them but they will certainly not be right for all situations. Cost being a major factor too!
Some good techniques demonstrated there. For the raised crossing you could even use the ramps which were included with the road plates. 👍🏻
Yes you could but they might be too wide, at least exactly as I did it. A good idea!
Really nice idea! This way the modular is directly next to the roadplate, but still looks good!
Yes, that's right!
Awesome way to integrate the new roads. Looks fantastic 👍👍👍
Glad you like it!
Wow, what a way of fine tuning. This is the way! The Fastfoodcorner is absolutely smashing as well... 🙌
Why not check out the build playlist? It's called Modular Mondays!
@@RobinHoodBricks I most defenatly will ! 😄
Great video - starting to feel more comfortable starting my first city where I'm almost certainly going to have to use the new road plates.
If I were starting now I'd use the new ones definitely. They are so flexible now for side streets, parking bays, different numbers of lanes, crossings where you want them. I like it!
Looks great. Love the curb and the way you created parking. 👍👍
Thank you so much!
Hi Robin,
I love what you did with the new plates!
Great tutorial, i love the new roads and this is probably best way to connect them, thanks
Great to hear, thanks!
I’m starting to like the new road system even more now. Thanks Robin Hood bricks! :)
Same well done robin you performed a miracle
I was frustrated no one was making the best of them. I said to Mrs Hood, "I'm buying some to show them what to do", haha!
Robin Hood Bricks and you did a marvellous job
Stellar ideas! Thank you so much for sharing! My mind is reeling with possibilities now.
Cool. Have fun!
I have seen a few takes on how to use the new. This is the best set up I have seen.
Very kind, thanks!
@@RobinHoodBricks welcs.
I liked these from the start and now I have even more reason... Brilliant as always !
Yay, thank you!
Thank you Robin Hood Bricks, looks amazing! 😍
Glad to help!
Nice one Robin! If you're going to do what every one here is suggesting, whe'll all have Bricknottingham vids for probably the rest of our lives!
Now, just another idea I had seeing you do all this, just for all the enthousiasts out there in the world that would like to start using those plates:
If you use the 'wide lanes' (a complete width per lane), you can even add some pavement or greenery in between, connected on top of studded connector plates.
Could be nice for a boulevard or something...
Yes, that was on my list for a potential second part. Central reservation, crossing islands, greenery etc!
Wow, so Just with a Hugh Number of additional parts i can use these fantastic new roads. Yeah works for me
Nicely done. I especially like the handicap access at the curb by the cross walks.
Little touches make a city much better!
love this video, two observations. The road is dark grey and the sidewalk tiles on modular building are dark grey. Now I need to change out the sidewalk to light grey to have the contrast. Secret ways that lego get you to buy more legos.
Very true. Unsurprising tactics from LEGO!
Excellent video, thank you. Just adding roads to my small city; and as i don't have the old roads, I'm great with how they work and look. You're suggestions will be put to good use shortly. 😁👍
Really great to hear. Send me a photo or two when you're done!
i honestly think this is the best way of doing this but one of the most expensive great video mate
The plates themselves are not cheap, no!
You may have already addressed this but you could even add a single white plate by the parking meter to create parking spaces
The possibilities are endless!
Just bought my 1st ever Lego set, The Daily Bugle, so i am going to give this road idea a good go! thanks for the video
Hope you enjoy it and it looks great!
This may have just changed my opinion on the new road plates...
GREAT VIDEO!
Thanks so much!
Watched this video last night and today I've converted my short street over to your system. Very pleased with it.
Yay, that's great to hear. I saw people struggling with it and thought this was the most easily done system!
@@RobinHoodBricks I'm very pleased with it, really gives a good look. Very intergrated. Thanks for the video.
I know. It needed saying. A country road might work well with a ditch either side but then again they are to straight!
@@RobinHoodBricks Maybe an American country road then. 😅
Great idea. Now I started to like the new system 😁
Thanks Robin 👍
No problemo!
Amazing, you made an excellent video about the road system, so many fantastic ideas! Thanks!
Glad you liked it. Loads more where that came from!
This is very creative, I love the idea. Thank you for sharing!
You are so welcome!
