    I've seen several of your videos and I really appreciate the detailed info and practical insights! IN particular the differences between the 21mm Voigtlander versions l,ll, and lll. I am accustomed to using a UV filter for lens protections, but I love the mount versatility and size of the version l (the 39mm screw mount). Tough choice.

    Hi Matt, I too am on my second copy of this super little lens having sold the first to help finance a 35 f1.2 which gives me a very bright, close enough to 50 mm equivalent Pretty much some instant regret there, so lived on baked beans and margerine sandwiches for a month so that I could buy a replacement. I totally agree with you on what a super walkabout lens it is. With my M8s crop factor the 1.33 multiplier gives me a 28, which which comfortably fulfils that role whether in the street, in a cafe, or for the most part, landscapes too. Paired with the 90 mm Elmar for a bit of extra reach (120mm) it gives me a small, light, no fuss outfit for an always with me carry. Sometimes the Elmar is left at home and replaced by an f1.5 50mm voigt, 67mm with crop factor is an odd sort of focal length I know, but I can usually make it work when I want that wider aperture, and a pocket size lens another example of small and light Voigtglass. Not quite in the same league as a Summilux but neither am I as a photographer, and it's a small fraction of the price,, while having nothing I can seriously object to . These items carry comfortably in my jacket pockets, more discreet than even a well worn canvas bag.

    Agreed. I just love it. Great walkaround lens. Set it at f/11 or 16 and practically everything is in focus. Very handy equivalent 28mm on the M8 too. I use the viewfinder on my M6 as widest framelines are 28mm, and that's a big difference.

    I got the Voigtländer 21 mm in LTM several years ago before the M mount version was available and used it with a Voigtlander adapter on my Bessa R2M. Later I switched the adapter to the type II so I could code the lens for my M8. Have to admit I only tested on the M8 Last year I participated in a Leica M workshop and was able to try the Leica Super Elmar 21 mm 3.4. Hi Matt. I was just wondering about your thoughts on using 21mm for portraits. In the video you make the point about how the model would be too small a part of the image but I think I'm right in saying Jean Loup Sieff used the 21 SA for a large number of his portraits. I like the 21 and am considering getting one but I'm currently primarily interested in getting into portraits. I feel like my 50 and 135 might be fine and that the 21 will offer something 'different'.

    All the Skopar lenses are wonderful on an ltm or M Leica. Ok, you can criticise the lenses at the extremes of aperture, but for a small and therefore easy to use lens they really take some beating. The 75mm is one of the very best, but the rare 28mm is imo the best, but this isn't to denigrate the others, I'd rather carry my 21mm Skopar than my 21mm Zeiss 2.8 Biogon.

    Has anyone compared the various 21mm viewfinders? I thought I would just use my Visoflex 020 but the battery drain is significantly greater with that in use. I wish we could turn the GPS component off as that may help reduce battery usage. Anyway, I was looking at the 21mm CV Viewfinder but it’s plastic and the front lens seems to protrude which may make it more prone to damage. I have also been looking at the 21mm Leica in plastic and metal, as well as the metal Leica Vario 21-24-28. I have been tempted by the latter but Googled what it would look like on a body and it’s huge! Then there’s the Zeiss but I’m worried that it may not be well aligned with the lens, and I walking around with a Leica body, Voigtlander lens, and Zeiss viewfinder just seems too patched-together. Any advice would be much appreciated!

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  3 года назад

      Hi James, yes agreed re. EVf/ LiveView drains the battery more. I use the 21mm Voigtlander plastic finders (see the finders video) the most and for 21mm. Much better than the Zeiss and Canon finders I have. Leica metal finders are nice but yes some can be big. Yes the plastic Voigtlander ones can scratch a little but they still work the same. (Buy with a lens and sell on the lens after for a better deal). 21-25mm Voigtlander also good if you shoot any 25mm.

      @@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Matt, does the purple fringing issue persist with the Mk 3 version of this lens, or is it simply a built in issue regarding the extreme angle at which light arrives at the KAF 10 sensor of the M8 and is thus beyond elimination by design changes in the later iterations of this lens. which has been on my wish list for a while now as it would seem to be a worthwhile available option to have for my "pocket" size 2 lens pocket set- up? I'm guessing that the 10 and 12mm versions could be even more susceptible to this characteristi, but haveIa possible solution to the purple fringe dilemma for us M8 users. Go for the hyperwide versions and buy a guillotine to chop off the purply bits to an apparent 18-20 mm fov? This comes straight out of my "Art of Course Photography Handbook". I'm happy to report that while there is some moderate vignetting (heavier in both top corners at about 2 stops darker, but certainly not terrible) the magenta colour cast is almost non-existent on my M10. The only reason I see it is because I have been pixel peeping and actively looking for it, but otherwise it wouldn't be noticed. I'll still use this primarily for black and white but it's great that I can get usable colour shots without having to spend time correcting it in post.

      I don't have either of these lenses but have been doing some research since I read your question. Some say that the f4 is better suited to film and not so good on digital while the f3.5 is better designed for digital. Some criticisms of the f4 on various forums include colour shift on the edges, strong purple shading at the edges, no red edge correction and no vignetting correction. Some of these can be corrected in post or by shooting in black and white. I hope that helps.

Also with M7 I not satisfied with result on film - in complicated exposure situation this 24 do not accept much light, often f/4 is too dark (like you have iso 400 speed in shadow or indoors), too contrast. Thats why I have forgotten it and now thinking to sell it off. Size no matters in case of picture quality.

    This suggests a topic: Walking around with Leica. 21mm vs 24mm vs 28mm vs 35mm. I bring this up because of Leica Q2. I’m with you in that I want all the options of switching lenses. Thanks Laurence, yes if I do a future trip where walking around a lot this is a nice idea. To spoil the simplistic view instantly though I can tell you straight away it depends where you walk. 21mm in London can be too tight. 35mm in open areas can be too wide. As experience tells me.
