Electric motorcycles are changing the game. Ryan and 44 compare an ultralight Surron Ultra Bee against the more traditional gasoline Suzuki DRZ400. There’s also an e-bike in the mix but no one cares.

I think the only thing that's missed here is the fact that the DRZ will also ride you too the trail no sweat... If its a 30 minute blast down a highway, not sure there's any juice left in that Ultra Bee. So i also have to hage a pick up truck if I want to ride trails with one? Hence I only have a DRZ and it suits me for commuting, trails and the odd ADV tour.
I think its going to be a while till battery tech supports the versatility that 90's and 2000's enduros provide.

So true. I myself am from an island and a gas enduro or on/off bike is the best vehicle. The loop of the island alone is about 170kms of mountain and country roads, there are trails that are 70 kms from my town, electric would be cool, but nowhere near as good for everyday use. I had an XT660R as long as i lived there and it was my only means of transport, an electric bike would never be able to do that

Man... I just love this content.
I was a city boy, used to ride bikes and had a motorcycle for a while, but sold it to move to a small mountain community. The town in on the side of a mountain, and my wife does not drive. I bought us Electric kick scooters, and when hers died, I bought electric pedal bikes. They are legal to ride with no license, cost about 8 cents to charge to full, and can haul our plus sized frames uptown (literally) comfortably. Home trip is faster because gravity.
Two kinds of people noticed us: the ones who laughed, and the ones who asked questions. The ones who asked questions got their own. There are a dozen or more pedal assist and e-scooter riders now. The ones who laughed don't laugh anymore.
I prefer the scooter, it's just more fun to ride, but the bikes are faster due to pedaling, and they can haul more cargo. I'd love an electric motorcycle, but none of them have the range I'd need to take it out of town, and for in town use, I'm already set with what I have.
Times change, and we adapt and grow to suit them. And here I am living in the future... sort of.

    • @Kaiser-ks3yq
      @Kaiser-ks3yq 4 месяца назад

I'd watch FortNines video on why electric motorcycles are failing - it's very difficult to put a big enough battery in a motorcycle, without making it so big it identifies as a cruiser, which has even greater range requirements, which need a bigger battery, and so on, so it's just unrealistic.

I think the Suring would open the door to play riding legal (maybe semi legal) instead of brappin around with a loud, heavy, plated bike?

@@mikem9953 As you say if youre looking for range it wont be what youre looking for. But riding "around the lake, campgrounds, beaches, little cottage roads + some trails" is what its meant for in my opinion. Sometimes watching all these youtube channels can be a bit deceiving, cause ive noticed i get quite alot more range than most, and its because im not as fast or going wide open alot of the time wich is a big battery drainer. I´ve gone almost 60miles on one charge where as most channels claim they barely get 40. But it sounds like it fits what youre looking for. I do recommend buying a 18/21 wheel setup though, cause the 19/19 front end wants to slip away underneath you at times which i found pretty scary. I cant choose for you, but i can definitely recommend the Ultra Bee! Good luck in deciding!

Fantastic video as usual. The point about keeping a dad bod a rad bod is truly understated. Ebikes will keep you fit, so every minute you ride them is like a minute spent at the gym, as long as you push it. A high end model might be $8K, but there are much cheaper models, and you can build your own in a few hours with a $300 used MTB and a $500-1000 kit. Sure, motorcycles can be pushed harder and go faster, but the opportunities to do so are incredibly limited. Meanwhile, you can go all out on an ebike, all the time. In the city, an ebike will get you anywhere within a 5km radius faster than any car or motorcycle. And it doesn't need insurance. And it doesn't need registration. And you can work on it in your living room. And you can store it in a closet. And you can ride on cycling paths. And you can take it wherever you want with a $150 car rack. And you can put it in a bag and fly it. The future is electric for sure. It also doesn't have registration plates and weighs less than 30kg.

This is why I went with an ebike. I got mine used for $1400 and spent about $300 on upgrades and maintenance. Yes, I could have almost gotten an XR150L new or a used CRF125 for not much more.
But I can ride the ebike on city paths for errands or for fun. It can fit in my car or on the bike carrier for driving to trailheads. It's slower than a dirtbike but can do all the same things. And if the battery dies I just pedal it. It weighs less than a dirtbike so I can do riskier lines and not worry about getting crushed by hot exhaust if I fall.

In the eMTB world, all brands such as Bosch, Yamaha, Shimano, etc have had some history of their motors failing in some fashion, and generally it seems the answer is replacement vs service/repair. So my note of "serviceability" wasn't so much how often you need to service it, but rather, can it be serviced/repaired vs requiring replacement.
Loosely compare that to a gas engine, where an engine failure can be resolved by way of service/repair vs having to replace the entire engine.

I rode the surron and it’s not terrible, I won’t be trading in my husky for one but they do work. I thought a lot of the parts looked kinda cheap though, He bent the front wheel on its first ride. All are great fun, e-mtb-s are awesome for big mountains where you can go up and downhill, surrons are amazing but the LB-s are too weak for a propper MX route without all the power mods. And then if you just want to be able to go to a city 200km away, just get a petrol bike. Have fun, be safe and dont destroy mtb trails ;)

@@cyjanek7818 Absolutely. Getting that heart rate up, even on an ebike, will pay a lot of dividends. The point about not paying insurance/registration is also extremely valid. I've owned both and tracked expenses for each. Registration was by far the largest expense on the motorcycle, even higher than devaluation and gas. And of course being able to use both roads _and_ cycling paths is a massive plus. As far as I'm aware, legally used Surrons are limited to roads and can't even access highway systems. Depending on where you live, you might even be able to cross intersections on both car and pedestrian signals, which significantly shortens trips.
An electric dirt bike might be fun if you really enjoy going fast in the woods, but it's nowhere near the sensibility and flexibility of an ebike.

I love the electric bike content! The ultra us indeed amazing and seems to be really well tough out. My only grip would be long term reliability because lets face it... it's a chinnese bike. You should take a look at the electric motion escape R for enduro. The amount of grip you get is incomparable with anything really. Plus it as a similar geometry to a trials bike so you dont feel cramp on it. It's a lot more expensive for sure but you really do get what you pay for. Enjoy!

I have my surron for 3 years now, 16000km enduro, some DH, some jumps some races, chassis holds up very welle as does the motor, running 15kw on it. I'm really impressed by the sturdiness of this bike considering what she eats

The chassis are ok. It's every thing else that fails. At least on the light bee. Brakes dont even last a full ride where we ride. Suspension is terrible and difficult to find replacement parts because there are several different ones. The Jack shaft is a terrible concept prone to failure. The wheels become all loose prematurely . The neck bearing fails so fast that it ovalised the neck. And dont start me on all the stupid sensors! I mean if you change all these things yeah it makes a ok bike but you will have spent the same amount of money that a better tough out stock bike like the electric motion or a stark varg costs. At the end you still have a chinese bike that worths half of what you spent on it. @@surronzak8154

chinese doesnt necessarily mean badly made, especially in the electric vehicle space, theyre pretty much dominate everything electric vehicle except the car

@@ivynbean The battery and motors are actually pretty good it's all the rest that is poor quality. The wheels brakes the sensors and every single bearing does not last very long. I speak of experience.

We’ve reached the point where Fortnine is now THE two wheeled TopGear. Broadcast, heck cinematic, production values. Genuine humor and chemistry. Unreal how well these are done.

The problem with these electric bikes (and I'd love to have one) is that they just aren't affordable. I bet Ryan didn't actually pay $8k for that gas motorcycle, and contrary to the line about only having 2 hours to ride, I bet he would still get more use out of the gasser. I have a nice XR 650R and a nice Kawasaki ZZR 1200 street bike that I have less than $8k into both of them and with the 4.3 gallon aftermarket tank on the XR, they will both go over 200 miles on a 2 minute fill-up. These electric bikes are cool, fun toys, but there's no world where I'd trade either of my bikes for one, much less both of them.

You're right - those e-bikes can't compete with touring motorcycles, not even close. BUT offroad/enduro are toys, and as a _toy_ this electric thigs can definitely have its appeal. If used for commute, ZZR is ridiculously expensive, XR650R is cheaper, but e-bike will be very affordable. It is about x2/x3 cheaper that cheapest dirtbike you can find (please compare vs new).

Banger video and I appreciate the light bee getting mentioned near the end! As a Surron LBX owner/rider, I don't ever associate myself with the young teens out there doing wheelies in public and having reckless behavior. It'd be nice to own an Ultra Bee but I'd be too short for it lol.

This video make me feel so excited for the future of electric bikes, even if the range isnt what we need now in some places it can still fill relatively big sections of the market and open it to all new groups!😊
