I just tested Atmos FWD and it was a nice drive, but it could use a lot more power. I hope it will get more potent hybrid config in next facelift. The drive-away price for Atmos is very much in "entry level luxury" territory, ~$52K (FWD) and $55K (AWD). Toyota has become entry-level luxury car brand. Toyota's waiting lists (particularly for hybrids) is the longest in the industry today, ~12-18 months. It appears that people are prepared to pay extra for Toyota cars.

I cancelled my RAV XSE order once Corolla Cross was released. Corolla Cross sizing is better for tight city parking spaces I need to deal with. I cannot afford a high quality EV so a quality hybrid engine 2.0 is a good option for now. Considering it’s going to cost $50K I do worry about it’s future value post 2030 when there are a lot more EVs on Australian roads. I agonise over whether to stick with my 2016 Mazda 3 and drive for another 10 years. It’s so hard to know what ICE used car market is going to look like in 10 years.

Would love to know how visible the jungle green is on the road. We don't really want a car that camouflages to the road, do we? Also, what's the road clearance like? That's a basic AWD requirement. If it's comparing to the rav4, is the road clearance higher or lower?

Thank you for your coverage of the new Toyota Corolla Cross, we currently have a 2018 Corolla Hatch Hybrid with 45000 km and a 2020 Rave AWD Cruiser with 15000 km. We ordered a Corolla Cross 2WD Admos. I have been waiting for the release in Australia of the Corolla Cross and was disappointed that Toyota didn't offer a electric passengers seat (even as an option) and that the dashboard didn't have more storage space (similar to the Rave) Your comments on the headlining color is also a good call) Why the hell car manufactures think that Black is the only color for trim I don't under stand. Even with some features not being to my liking across the whole car it's great. (Yes it is over priced but so is every other car I compared) I would pay more to get the lighter color trim that I would prefer. We have really enjoyed our Hybrid Toyota's and until there's something better on the market we will keep buying Toyota Hybrids.

If I am paying >$52,000 for a car I hope I am offered what I want. I have to wait at least several months for it. I don't need a sunroof. The cheap look must be Toyota's way to get you to pay more for the Atmos, presumably its better.

i think everyone should consider the added price to the Rav4 in 2023 when comparing to the corolla cross, the price increase for the Rav4 in 2023 is quite a lot with both the tech upgrade price and global price increase. The corolla cross will not be only 2 grand cheaper after these added costs to the Rav4

    • @nightowlnzab
      @nightowlnzab Год назад +1

Yes exactly, here in NZ the top-of-the-range AWD Corolla Cross is between $4-8K cheaper than a similarly spec'd RAV4 with the older tech. You can't even order a RAV4 here now, and only register interest for 2024, and I'm sure well before then (once they roll the new tech into the RAV4) there will be a price increase to further widen the gap.

Disappointed to find I would have to choose the rav4 at this pricing even though I would prefer a smaller car. The rav4 is so much more than $2000 better. It's more powerful. It's bigger. It's actually really competent as an AWD, often managing the same territory as our heavy duty 2015 Land Rover Defender. Sigh - when will we get a compact toyota awd drive hybrid that's properly priced?

I'm interested in the GXL NZ$44k which adds full LED lights, rear privacy, panoramic camera, and larger 10.5' display vs the NZ$41k GX base model. Back seat passengers will be pleased with the large side windows and Leg space.

What is the longevity of these things and how long until the expensive battery needs to be replaced? The older corollas when looked after have a reputation of going forever will these Hybrids live up to that reputation? Have a look around how many prius do you see on the road nowadays? As an engine reconditioner i don't take a lot of notice of car tests where they just drive a new car and tell you what they think to me the real test of a car is its longevity because us people that work on the cars do not get paid a lot of money and we like our cars to be able to go for a long time with normal servicing. History shows a lot of cars that have won car of the year have turned out to be duds after a few years and others that were called lemons have turned out to be extremely reliable cars. Not everyone can afford to change their cars every few years.

Things aren't getting cheaper across the board, vehicle demand (especially hybrids) are at an all time high, production and shipping is still facing challenges. You can't even order let alone take delivery of a RAV4 for over a year - and a price increase will no doubt be imminent once they finally refresh it's tech etc.

Why did you compare it to skoda kamiq ? At 32-42 k euro this is comparable to skoda karoq. Which offers a lot more space plus other things such as better seats , matrix led lights. The kamiq is a chr competitor, the karoq is a corolla cross competitor as a compact suv, while the kodiaq is a rav4 competitor. I really want ti like corolla cross but after testing it 2 times, it has terrible rear legroom, bad quality plastics, some cheap components, no underneath protection, and the copilot chair isnt that good. Toyota really cheapened out and cut down costs a lot on this one. Ive checked also the hrv from honda and it has much better quality. When i enter a rav4 from a corolla cross i can imediately feel the difference in quality for only 2-3k euro extra

The GXL is alot higher spec than the GX for not much more. Hybrid only gets 1.5 litres per hundred less than the petrol. Do not worth tge extra cost.

The petrol-only is a dog to drive, the hybrid is great, almost zippy. Worth it there alone without saving petrol. Plus official petrol consumption figures are BS. Probably more like 3 litres per hundred different.

It's all BS the dealerships, especially with hybrid mainly Toyoya have their buyers by their nuts, where they want them, since covid cars are harder to get and the dealerships have now got smarter and make cars to order rather than, a supermarket and you can simply go in and buy a car and choose the color.

this car is $42k but Toyota sank everything into the hybrid drivetrain... that's it. Otherwise it's a $29,990 small suv with all the cost cutting Toyota is a famous for. Realistically $40-$50k is kind o getting to be "budget"... if you go with a petrol only car then the company can splurge more on creature comforts. Your choice. To me this works well as a cheaper n/a 2.0 cvt. It would take too long to amortise the hybrid portion of the price. Or perhaps just go with the upcoming MG4 EV and skip hybrids completely.

man, the reviews (tbh) are missing some big points more and more and more
how do you tell the base model from the mid spec, "the lights"
you missed what is probably the more important lifestyle thing, (and the easiest visual cue) and that is the roof rails. you go on to mention that a surf board would fit inside so you're aware of the active type of person this might well appeal too
the other (i feel tiny thing, that is a massive fail) "the connection subscription is free for the first 12 months and then is an ongoing cost of $22.50, tell us what you think in the comments"
I think that without knowing if it is 22.50 a week, month, year would be a massive help in deciding if that is value or not (and there is no reference or context to give an idea of the time frame that 22.50 is)
you mention the USB C in the rear, and refer to there being only 1 USB A in the front, but did you look in the centre armrest, where there is in fact a USB C, and a 12volt, seem almost criminal to pick on one aspect, while ignoring that it is in truth catered for
I personally found that the black roof liner did not have that "dark and dingy" feel, in fact i thought it would, but after spending time in there, i was honestly surprised that I never felt that, (i am the same height as you, and unlike many cars, you would have to say, your eye line in reference to the windows in the rear doors, is well, not as obstructed (and something that you can clearly see in the video)
as for the remarks about the plastics, again, i think it is something missed right
you can have soft lovely feeling things in the rear seats, but the truth of the matter is, for many of the buyers of the cars, its going to have, kids, dogs, etc in the rear, not adults, (now if this was a different car, aimed at a different market i would agree) but i would dare say those materials are such that they arent easily marked, damage or tear, and are easy to clean
11:32-11:35 point in the video, i get that he is doing a bit to the camera, but, the degree in which those arms are crossed, not good, and not something a channel that is meant to be "experts" on cars, and driving should be doing
I also dont think you really understand the term "sporty" in the context you are using it
the steering is indeed light, i found lighter than the normal corolla, however what you get is a RESPONSIVE feeling car (not a sporty)
    light is not sport,
tight lock to lock isnt always sporty
the handling of the car is however responsive, and very much so, also, i dont think it wasnt without feeling, there was a lot of good feel, and feedback in the steering, however that lightness did dull the normal feedback you would expect, but if you're after an engaging drive it is there, you just have to spend a lot more time with it
personal pet peeve here, you mention road noise, and kinda round about, blame the car, its often done, not just here, but it is tyres that play a better role in that, a good review would be how well the cabin isolates that noise eg " the stock tyres on the corolla cross can be a little noisey on course chip roads, not something that is uncommon in cars in the segment, however the cabin is nicely isolated from the bulk of it, you will notice it on the open roads, however it is not loud enough to distract, or tire when driving, it does however handle the wind noise from highway speeds well, so something to be aware of if you live where you are travelling those roads, and maybe speak to you local tyre shop when it is time to replace the stock tyres"
the ABS thing, well, that has a lot to do again with the tyres, and the markets that it is coded for (also, you will find that it will be tuned for looser surfaces than where you're getting the fault)
it will be a trade off, that i personally hope they dont tune out, cause on dirt, loose, or broken surface, it is perfect
as a side note, has this reviewer spent any time outside of a troc or kamiq, as well, no mention of the mazdas etc etc that are also in the segment
