Been driving a CCH since December, 2,700 miles. Great car but I'm averaging 36.5 MPG, not 42. Second, the fuel tank is only 10.8 gallons. My practical tank is only 8 gallons with a range of 288 miles. That's not very good and I find myself buying gas almost as often as my old Crosstrek. I thought I could get used to this but I was wrong. A 14 gallon tank would have been a home run.
Just took delivery on a XSE two days ago. We waited 7 weeks for it to be built and arrive and I’m really excited especially after seeing your review. We traded in a 2016 Crosstrek Limited with a failing CVT. This is the first time in 22 years that we haven’t owned a Subaru as we have switched over to all Toyotas.
A friend of mine is in the market for a small crossover, and when she called a few of her local Toyota dealers, the waitlist for a Corolla Cross was significant (small refundable deposit + 12-18 month wait)
So what your saying is I should get on a waitlist now for the 2024 model. My Forester will be 8 years old by then so I think its time for a replacement.
Good luck getting one of these anytime soon. After watching this review, I called the local Toyota dealer here in the SF Bay Area and was told it will be months and months before we see one. Looks like a winner though.

Great review Alex. Seems like a home run for Toyota. Unfortunately probably another car we will wait over a year or more for after you place your order.
Got the Corolla Cross Hybrid XSE with blackout badges and love it!! 40-50 MPG depending on drive. Comfortable, easy to drive, pretty fast, lots of headroom, all the bells and whistles, adaptive cruise control is amazing, breaks are amazing, heated seats, sunroof, blind spot, lift gate, AWD, pretty decent audio, apple CarPlay, navigation, nice seats, and just an amazing small SUV. Traded my 2 year old BMW X1 and never looked back. Happy to be back with Toyota for sure! This is not a family SUV, there’s not a lot of leg room in the second row but for a couple it’s perfect. So much better than the “ever expanding RAV4 “ which keeps getting bigger in size and in price. This is like “mini RAV4 meets mini Highlander”! Finally a small hybrid SUV from Toyota! I brought home a Nightshade model in Celestine paint last Monday. So far I'm really pleased with it. This is my fourth Toyota hybrid, and IMO its powertrain is the best yet. It will take a long, steep hill near me at 55 MPH without high revs from the engine, something none of my three hybrids before it could do. The fastest I was comfortable driving my 2019 Prius up the same hill was 45 MPH. I'm looking forward to our first long trip with the Cross. Thanks for a great review, Alex.

As of today, there are dozens of Corolla Cross Hybrids in stock within 20 miles of me - the place closet to me has stock and is getting more next week. Stealerships are not moving inventory in this economy. Definitely do not pay over *base* MSRP.
I've been waiting for this one. I liked the idea behind the original Corolla Cross being lower cost and slightly smaller than a RAV4 (I like driving slightly smaller vehicles in general and am in the market for a practical CUV...), but reading peoples' experiences with the 169 horsepower engine put me off. Hopefully the additional horsepower with the hybrid electric engine/motor makes up for that. The fuel economy is extremely nice, too!
The 169 horsepower engine is great for the Corolla sedan/hatchback since they're both about 300 pounds lighter than the Corolla Cross. However the Corolla Cross is simply too big and heavy for that engine. Honda made the same mistake with the 2023 Honda HRV, giving it the Civic's base 158 horsepower engine. TheTopher said it took him almost 13 seconds to do zero to 60 in the 2023 Honda HRV.
Having driven my friend's Corolla Cross, I think it's good enough for everyday driving. Some people just don't anticipate and can't drive without v6 torque while some own dinky 100hp 90's Civics and do just fine. It depends on the driver but anything is better than the garbage CHR they had before.
Love it! Hard to understand wasting so much hatch space with the emergency, high voltage, disconnect. Was it a temporary design on a test prototype, and the engineers forgot to circle back to move it to the side?
In general we love it. Minor downsides- memorize the climate controls because otherwise you need a magnifying glass to see them while driving ( : Also any weight over about 100 pounds in the cargo area definitely affects the steering feel in a negative way. This is not a cargo hauler. If needed, drop the rear seat backs and shift cargo forward.
Nice review! These cars will be like Sasquatch trying to find in Canada. I think this cross vehicle is different enough to warrant a new name, and maybe move away from the Corolla name plate that is plagued with crazy insurance rates. Nice to see Toyota refining the hybrids and not moving to full on electric, which doesn't work for me.
I don't know why I was so amused at your excitement about the powered lift gate. I also thought it was a burrito in the glove compartment. I have bad eyes.
The lack of a spare tire, when there appears to be enough room for one if the area were better-designed, is disappointing. I would appreciate a dealer having a modification package to accommodate a spare (or, better-yet, change this design Toyota!).
Alex, Wow, the Cross Hybrid is finally here! Toyota must be relieved they beat their initial MPG estimate while vastly improving performance over the 2.Slow engine in the regular Cross. It is reassuring to see the impressive new Prius drivetrain going into a genuinely practical vehicle. 🤩Toyota buyers will now have to decide whether they want to be on the interminable waiting list for the RAV4 Hybrid or Hybrid Cross.😉 On the subject of headroom - HALLELUJAH!!!!🥳🥳🥳🥳 What a pity the Cross has so much less legroom than its chief rival the HR-V. 🤨
i have the corolla cross with 2.0 engine. i use extreme driving style to get 5.0L/100km, which is 47 MPG. i never go over 100km/h, seldom let the engine go over 2500rpm when accelerating and hyper mill when ever possible. its a different kind of fun squeezing for MPG.
oh holy cow. i guess i no longer think i need a kia niro phev. this is only a few MPG less, but i'll spend about 12k less for the car. it would take me forever to make up that cost. AND: - this toyota should be more reliable - and this should hold it's value longer glad i waited.
Seems like an excellent value and like most new Toyotas, rides quite well. The thing is, can you get one. And if and when you can, will the dealer jack the price way up?
Sounds like you already know: you can't get one and the price will be very high. Whereas other countries are releasing the more standard "L" line, here we're only getting the higher end "sport" line. You may be best to wait a couple of years until (1) interest rates come back down, (2) supply issues are resolved, and (3) the "L" line is released.
I got mine well not hybrid last year ❤❤very economical saves me gas , been in Vegas 2x very strong engine I have no complaints .33 miles per gallon 👍👍👍not bad.. I don’t like turbos coz it makes ur engine stress
I got the SE w/sunroof, didn't want, wouldn't use, but dealers almost exclusively order with, wanted the paddle shifters. Use sunroof all the time, don't use paddles 🙃 hypermile, get @80MPG non highway, 55+ highway, 50 freeway. If you watch detailed breakdown of the eCVT, marvel. Forever transmission/motor. ZERO wear transmission. No clutches, chains belts, electric sump, virtually never used, as motor too, splash/throw types, unless being driven hard, no need for additional from pumps. My God I didn't know what a fantastic choice I was making! 🥳😄
Actually I am going to the Toyota dealer in my locale tomorrow. This was pre-planned of course, but I viewed this because I wanted a 'head up' on what I should expect, BEFORE the sales rep tells me all I should know. (maybe some stuff I don't need, but hey, it's what they do )
Toyota won't unfortunately. Toyota, along with Ford, GM, and Nissan, have pledged to keep new car production low. Low supply allows them to keep demand and prices high and not have to pay millions in new car cash rebates and marketing.
@Braeton Wilson I mean that is the jist of it, but they also just don't want to have large inventories at dealerships just sitting for months and have to offer incentives to move them.
Great review, thank you. The most recent official news I saw last week said they would be in U.S. showrooms in June. I hope this won't be a waiting list + high dealer markup situation!
8:30 that’s a bottle holder. Because it doesn’t have space for the typical lower compartment on the rear door, they at least throw in space for a bottle.
Finally someone mentions AMBER LIGHTS AT THE REAR. I will not buy any vehicles without those Amber lights. Safety is why I like those lights especially when changing lanes or 4 way flashers. No spare tire?? Oh I AM REALLY NOT BUYING THIS VEHICLE
Just got back from dealership in Vancouver WA after putting down a deposit for a new Wind Chill Pearl Corolla Cross XSE at MSRP. Do not pay markup. Several month wait likely but you never know how many they may pump out of the new Alabama factory for June.
I think the Corolla Cross is pretty dull, but in this form it's just about the perfect modern economy car for most buyers. Aside from a lackluster interior, I can't see anything significantly wrong with this, and even the interior is acceptable for a relatively inexpensive car, and would have been premium twenty years ago. If Toyota doesn't sell massive numbers it's because they either aren't making enough or haven't figured out how to market them. For most people this will be just as functional as a RAV4 Hybrid, and save money. It's not as if the RAV4 interior is any nicer or much roomier.
Honestly the main pain point for marketing is the name. Whatever this thing is, it isn't a Corolla. It aims at a subtly different market segment and does not have any of the Corolla's limitations.
I agree with your take on the Cross. The interior is cheap and the ride is soft but feels odd on regular surface streets. My friend just paid $37k for one. I drove it and Im less than impressed.
Very interesting. This is now on my watch list. I don't like the black roof and would prefer the front end of the non-hybrid version, but the added acceleration and fuel economy win out, IMO. I need lots of headroom, this looks better than RAV4.
@6:00 you know that wiring seemed like a after thought but next year you bet Toyota will definitely change that design flaw. Than again this is Preproduction so... Hope one of the hybrid trims offers vented seats.
Great review!! After rejecting a new RAV4 because of the noise and stiff seating, this sounds like it would be a great alternative. Will just have to wait til they arrive in our area to teat drive. Thanks!!
Disappointed to see that black two-tone color scheme seems to always be included in the higher-end editions. Damn near impossible to keep clean and spots up like hell if the weatherman even mentions the word rain.
I went to japan recently and saw a good amount of these. I noticed that japan has the amber signals where the white space is in the outer brake lights/signals...I'd do some sort of conversion to fill in that space or buy jdm spec lights altogether lol
Ive been waiting for this segment to catch up for years now. Im tired of the ever-increasing bloating of whats supposed to be small crossovers and the mpg suffering because of it. If I want a midsize SUV i'll get a damn V6 4Runner and it will be a real functional SUV. And waiting so long to make these crossovers hybrid is baffling. Stop trying to make them what theyre not. I want a modern hybrid sedan-like with extended cargo/liftback. IE a mini station wagon that gets great MPG and good power/nimble carlike handling. IDK why thats so hard to accomplish these days. Finally Toyota showed up to the party.
I wish I could be more excited for this but I'd rather keep my old Toyota for the next 5 years than deal with trying to acquire one of these things for msrp.
Very helpful, detailed review! 👏🏻 I’m really bummed about no spare tire, but hopefully you’re right that one could be purchased and jury-rigged to fit into the cargo space. QUESTION: I’ve heard the center console does NOT have an armrest that slides forward-could you please confirm or refute that? Thanks! 😎
I drove the S model, it doesn’t have an armrest that slides forward. The armrest is tiny and sits high-I did find an armrest on Amazon that does slide forward. I guess that might help??
Toyota needs to ditch the giant fake black grille look. Although the 2015 4runner front facia was a good look - the vertical stripe trim between the headlights and fog lights.
I am actually upset with Toyota for blocking the easy instillation of a spare tire. There is obviously enough space for at least a space saver spare in they just put that high voltage disconnect anywhere else but right where you want to put the spare. They are really trying to upsell you to a Rav4 hybrid here and get that extra few grand out of you.
Honda is very confusing sometimes. The European/Asian HRV has a hybrid model and even an EV in China. China also gets a CRV/Breeze PHEV. Meanwhile in North America, we are getting... a hydrogen CRV instead. 🙃
@@AAutoBuyersGuide Not necessarily. The Civic hybrid in Europe uses a very different hybrid drive system that was used in the Insight, but paired with the 2.0 engine making 181hp. Presumably, the HR-V would use the exact same setup. Honda did confirm last year that the Civic hybrid is coming to the US.
@@Chris-de2qc Quit thinking in the past . . . If you avoid the DCT (and everyone should) their vehicles are coming up more reliable than the problem-plagued Escape/Bronco Sport or the Italian made Renegades.
@@rightlanehog3151 Hmmmm I was thinking more in the range of the seat adjustability, the infotainment and the dated Corolla interior . . . although that underfloor compartment in the back is a head scratcher.
50 mpgs wow! I've got 49 mpg with my Rav4 Hybrid a couple of time, don't think Ive ever crossed 50. One question: is that 2 litre engine the Atkinson cycle variant?
Great Review Thanks ( Toyota, make a GR with a bigger battery 🔋 and RWD motor with 30-50 extra boost with a bottom on the steering wheel for boost 10-60mph in 5-6 seconds so it’s fun to drive or and merging
OK! Now I am impress with the updated MPG of low to mid 40s MPG. The 37 estimated MPG that Toyota, first quited was a turn off for me, so that had made the RAV4 Hybrid to making more sense to me over the Corolla-Cross. I do hate one thing still that is a turn off for me, and I think Toyota should correct it before they go to full production. I hate the location of the high voltage cable, where they can give us a spare tire. I think they can do better in the placement of that orange cable and give us a spare tire. Stop Production Toyota, fix that by rerouting that high voltage orange cable and give us a spare tire plese. I hate flat fix kit. Oh! And I am also impress that the hybrid version fix the very slow acceleration of the gas only model. 👍👍👍👍
Hi Alex, thank you for uploading such informative and helpful videos so consistently! How do you think this compares with the Niro PHEV? In Canada, it seems like the Niro PHEV would be the better buy since it gets a $5000 rebate while this does not, so I was trying to convince my friend to go with the Niro PHEV since he can charge at home and AWD is not necessary. However, after hearing you give the Corolla Cross Hybrid such high praise, I'm not so sure anymore.
I think both would be a sound investment. I think the Corrolla Cross hybrid would my pick between those two(I like the Toyota engine better.) The PHEV wouldn't be that advantageous for me personally, but it may be for someone else.
@@ghenry85 Fair points, I guess the Toyota tax exists for a reason since it's always so hard to convince my friends to consider alternatives. If this is as good as Alex says it is though, the waiting list will be long enough to convince some buyers to go elsewhere.
Great review as usual. I would love to see results for these hybrids in more congested/city environments to see what the real world mpg/range would be. I'm older people now and my needs have changed. We currently have a 2016 Outback w/2.5 and CVT when we we working it easily averaged 17 commuting/errands runs but now my wife is lucky she goes more than 6 miles for shopping/errands and of course in hot weather the a/C is full blast giving her around 11mpg typically. On the highway it still easily gets 33mpg but that amount of driving is greatly diminished these days so I want something that would still get big mpg with our use these days and since my Spark EV is awesome it's size is too small for her comfort meanwhile I'm 6' and she's 5'2 and I love it. Anyway, it seems an efficient AWD hybrid may be in our future and since the dealers are soaking folks for a Maverick Hybrid this car seems like a great option. BTW, your review of the Spark EV helped me decide on one and coming up on 4yrs of ownership I'm still very happy with it so your reviews are a great source for my research on vehicles, thanks!
Could one just buy a small spare tire and leave it in the trunk for those long trips. I really don't need the full cargo 99.9% of the time and I don't go camping. This is my type of vehicle to get soon. Great detailed video
What a Terrific Corolla Cross, I love the MPG, sadly the front end is a dislike, I absolutely love the regular Corolla Cross front, one of the best looking Suv's around, its strange how so many Hybrids have an odd looking front end. Great Review, Thanks so much.
I love the cross, especially the hybrid but I dont know if I want to get a car that cant carry a spare tire. 🤷 If you add a spare is there not a chance of breaking or damaging the electrical components? If i get a flat i dont want to have to wait hours for AAA, I want to change it and be on my way. I can only hope this changes for the 2025 release.
This will probably be the new best car for Uber Drivers, or anyone really that needs good dailu transportation. The new Prius looks amazing.. but the rear headroom is not good... or the storage. This will fit better for that need, and be more efficient than a Rav4 Hybrid. Oddly I would want one without the AWD.. I have No need for it where I live.. It's an option in the Rav 4, too bad they did not make it an option in this car. Would save some weight and unneeded complication.
Sort of like the old ford C max hybrid ? C max was 188 hp not all wheel drive about 43mpg. Ford no longer made them after 2018. Was a cool thing about the c max energy you could run the air conditioner all night off the battery. 🌚

🤩Toyota buyers will now have to decide whether they want to be on the interminable
waiting list for the RAV4 Hybrid or Hybrid Cross.😉 On the subject of headroom - HALLELUJAH!!!!🥳🥳🥳🥳 What a pity the Cross has so much less legroom than its chief rival the HR-V. 🤨
@RightLaneHog which one would you choose to replace your matrix
@@broseph7-7-06 RAV4 Hybrid. It has a bigger back seat, a spare tire and a higher tow rating for a couple of extra monthly payments.
There only a $1420 price difference between both of them
How long is the wait list for this vehicle?
The Cross Hybrid is here only if it's here, and it isn't.
i have the corolla cross with 2.0 engine. i use extreme driving style to get 5.0L/100km, which is 47 MPG. i never go over 100km/h, seldom let the engine go over 2500rpm when accelerating and hyper mill when ever possible. its a different kind of fun squeezing for MPG.
Shockingly good value on this! If it's as reliable as my 2008 Highlander, it's gold.
oh holy cow. i guess i no longer think i need a kia niro phev. this is only a few MPG less, but i'll spend about 12k less for the car. it would take me forever to make up that cost. AND:
- this toyota should be more reliable
- and this should hold it's value longer
glad i waited.
And wait you will
Very impressive for economy at 50 mpg for your drive. Make mine Cypress Green. Thanks for the thorough review 😊
yes ut díse
This was pre-planned of course, but I viewed this because I wanted a 'head up' on what I should expect, BEFORE the sales rep
tells me all I should know. (maybe some stuff I don't need, but hey, it's what they do )
I know it’s probably a minor thing for most, but a red turn signal is a deal breaker for me. I just don’t feel that red turn signals are safe.
i love this generation of toyota hybrids. more power and great gas mileage...best of both worlds!
Amazing!! Looks like will be hot sales, hope Toyota sends enough to dealerships 😪
Paddle shifter great on mountain 2 lane roads where we live at. Agree not necessary on flat land.
I went to the Toyota dealer last week. The only new cars they had was 1 Camry and 1 ugly base model Rav4. Titus Will ford in Tacoma WA.
XSE starts at $31k + $5k dealer markup...
I need lots of headroom, this looks better than RAV4.
my wife drives 2021 rav4 hybrid mostly city driving she got 45mpg avg amizing car on fuel
Probably moving the wire will void the warranty, spare tire is a must for me, eventhoug I only need it once every 10 years
I’ve already looked into it. You can get a doughnut tire and there’s more than enough room for it.
35K?? Ouch!!! I would rather step up and opt for a RAV4.
That 35k can only get you the base trim of rav4 hybrid

im reserving mine monday, shoud be in mid september, same color as yours also xse for $36400
I much prefer the Corolla Cross design to to the RAV4 design.
Looking forward to seeing and using this hybrid system in the Mazda CX-50 when it comes out!!
I’d expect the 50 to use the one from the RAV4. If it uses this one it’ll be underpowered since it’s a much larger/heavier vehicle.
@@BrandonG8Man not really though because the base engine in the cx50 has less hp and much worse mpg
I sense at least a $4,000 markup from the dealerships
Make that $6000 at least.
Need more in-depth comparison of CC vs RAV4, one thing for sure it will be hard to get at dealership
I am going to buy one. The only thing is the XSE price...trying to find a dealer here in Florida that will work with me.
Looks like a winner, where I live the waiting list is longer than a year.
Where do you live?
the EV fanbois are always knocking on Toyota for their insistence on hybrids but to this day people like these practical vehicles!
I rented this car twice and loved it
I went to japan recently and saw a good amount of these.
Yes, thank you! 👍🏻 @@joannestazio4495
Toyota needs to ditch the giant fake black grille look. Although the 2015 4runner front facia was a good look - the vertical stripe trim between the headlights and fog lights.
Alex, thank you for explaining everything! Great video.
I call this the RAV-3
I am actually upset with Toyota for blocking the easy instillation of a spare tire. There is obviously enough space for at least a space saver spare in they just put that high voltage disconnect anywhere else but right where you want to put the spare. They are really trying to upsell you to a Rav4 hybrid here and get that extra few grand out of you.
My everyday hybrid SUV! I might buy Alex.
He's not cheap (I hear).
Would you say this is the modern version of the Prius V?
Honda needs to make their own version of a Toyota Corolla Cross. Around 200hp, 45+mpg come on Toyota and Honda
'Really surprising that Honda didn't offer a hybrid system in their new North American-market HR-V.
@@kenhoward3512 It’s coming.
If they did, the mileage would be as disappointing as the CRV hybrid’s…
Honda is very confusing sometimes. The European/Asian HRV has a hybrid model and even an EV in China. China also gets a CRV/Breeze PHEV. Meanwhile in North America, we are getting... a hydrogen CRV instead. 🙃
@@AAutoBuyersGuide Not necessarily. The Civic hybrid in Europe uses a very different hybrid drive system that was used in the Insight, but paired with the 2.0 engine making 181hp. Presumably, the HR-V would use the exact same setup. Honda did confirm last year that the Civic hybrid is coming to the US.
good city car, on the highway at 70 mph better use earplugs to avoid permanent hearing loss.
Many features of the Niro are better, much of the interior especially . . . however, the AWD system makes this the more likely target for me.
Yes, Toyota is having trouble matching the competition in space efficiency.
But it's a kia
@@Chris-de2qc Quit thinking in the past . . . If you avoid the DCT (and everyone should) their vehicles are coming up more reliable than the problem-plagued Escape/Bronco Sport or the Italian made Renegades.
@@rightlanehog3151 Hmmmm I was thinking more in the range of the seat adjustability, the infotainment and the dated Corolla interior . . . although that underfloor compartment in the back is a head scratcher.
I've been telling people this will get worse fuel economy than the RAV4 Hybrid, I'll have to correct myself, which I'm happy to have to do.
When the preview took place last year, Toyota told us it had worse economy than the RAV4 Hybrid. It is surprising how far off they were.
50 mpgs wow! I've got 49 mpg with my Rav4 Hybrid a couple of time, don't think Ive ever crossed 50.
One question: is that 2 litre engine the Atkinson cycle variant?
Yes it is
@@AAutoBuyersGuide Hi Alex, did you have to use any hypermiling techniques to achieve that mpg ? That's very impressive for a crossover.
Great Review Thanks ( Toyota, make a GR with a bigger battery 🔋 and RWD motor with 30-50 extra boost with a bottom on the steering wheel for boost 10-60mph in 5-6 seconds so it’s fun to drive or and merging
But on Toyota official website says combine 6.4L/100km
Means around 36mpg
From where you got 42mpg info
The interior size is getting closer to the RAV4 and CRV from 10 years ago.

@@chezzyperson3339 Agreed, but my friend wants something "SUV-like", so the Corolla Cross Hybrid would be a better fit than the Prius.

Do you get the impression Alex was REALLY impressed with this vehicle!
No blue toyota logo on the hybrid? Interesting....
Don't like red turn signals, but it's a good looking car and I know it's going to be great reliability.
Could one just buy a small spare tire and leave it in the trunk for those long trips. I really don't need the full cargo 99.9% of the time and I don't go camping. This is my type of vehicle to get soon. Great detailed video
Just toss in a can of fix-a-flat and gtg
What a Terrific Corolla Cross, I love the MPG, sadly the front end is a dislike, I absolutely love the regular Corolla Cross front, one of the best looking Suv's around, its strange how so many Hybrids have an odd looking front end. Great Review, Thanks so much.
