I enjoyed the many humorous (and relatable) struggles to working on these old hogs. Done few tranny swaps ... 🙄 On the side of the road. lol. If 2 of the gears are pooched you might have to find another donor or core to steal them from and then rebuild into one good one. Looking forward to watchin how you make out with it 🤙🤙
Surprise! The W56 a/b models have that bolt in shifter. Also for driveshaft bolts I use a wrench on one side and a ratchet or impact with a wobble extension and short socket on the other side. Check out Capri Tools stubby impact sockets. They fit in places you wouldn’t think possible.
You can use a " cheater pipe" to get more leverage on those bolts. It is simply a longer pipe you slip over the wrench or rachet handle. I know it's a year later. But still works.
I do the same thing, I know I need to remove something first to get something else out, but I try to take the short route, and it seems it often doesn't work out. Nice 6' extension. Also, I bet you loved moving out of California. It's a beautiful state, but man they got some crazy regs there.
You probably figure this out already but if you remove the tranny cross-member and let the weight of the tranny sag down you can get to the top tranny bolts with a 2+ foot extension. You may have to losen the motor mount bolts a little to let the tranny sag down more if needed.
Unfortunately, there's no getting around it here unless you pay someone to pass it illegally. To top it off, CA compliant cats are all over $1000 and they get stolen frequently.
For the driveshaft could chock the front wheels. Throw in neutral. Then use the box wrench and a 3/8 impact gun with a swivel socket lol. Ass end lifted can spin the drive shaft easily lol. also for the engine swap stuff definitely dont need bar approval to swap and register your car lmao. Im in cali. As long as you get it smoged your good and you know what im talking about lol
I have an 89 4runner 3vze 3.0 6 cyl. Automatic transmision began the issue with having to rev it for a minute before it would engage in 1st. Seemed fine after it got going and ok throughout the day afterwards. Then again the next day, the same. It's gotten worse. Is this a symptom of anything other than a new transmission?
Perhaps something broke? Just being sarcastic, haha. I like your videos because you're already involved in the parts of maintenance that I'm trying to stage out for my '89 Pickup. Gonna do a frame up restoration. Any suggestions for things to avoid or mistakes not to make?
@@mikeofthemountain9865 One of the things I've realized working on these old Toyotas is to use Toyota OEM sensors only. For example, when doing a knock sensor on a 3VZE you're playing with fate if you don't get a Toyota sensor >.< Ask me how I know! Nothing else really coming to mind, just don't cut corners and take your time.

These have been great vids. I am planning on getting a project 4runner soon, so it's incredibly helpful to see someone else do it first.

Thanks guys! Glad you can relate 🤣🤣
Can’t believe the longest tool in the world actually worked! 🤣 great vid!

Thank you! I’ll check them out. That seems like an easy way for sure

with those top two bolts i used a 2' extention and my son was ratching from inside of the truck from the floor where the shifters are.
Hilarious! It was even worse on my landcruiser. My god. I had to climb into the engine bay and shove my arm behind the motor.
Much easier to reach the top bolts by dropping the tranny crossmember it tilts the the bolts down.
Yep, thought about it and was going to be my next step if the long extension didn’t work. Thanks!!
Yeah even with the 22re to the w56 you gotta use extensions and a swivel socket.
1st gen 4cylinder runner came factory with that size rear diff unlike the pickups? The webs on the diff is usually the v6 style
extra long extensions are the best way to get to those bolts up there. BMW. Mercedes, toyota. It works
I welded 3 wrenches together to get those off. And went from the top down.
That definitely works!

Had to use a bunch of extensions for my R150 a couple weeks ago lol
So it's just a Toyota thing then!
@@RM_Garage lol definitely
@@RM_Garage Did the same thing on a trailblazer.
7:33.. In my State we cut the Cats off before they get stolen. No Cali BS here.

Is this basically the same process for a 86 Toyota Pickup 4x4? With the OEM stock 22R engine
Yes very similar
That's the only way I ever knew how to get them top bolts out lol but I did the same thing u did before I figured it out lol
You should see how much worse they are to get to on my landcruiser. TERRIBLE!!
Mine won't enter reverse, but the reverse light comes on. All other gears are fine. Pls, what do I do?
Get the husky battery ratchet bro cheap but really good for price I got both the m12 fuel and husky version bot have a place in the tool box.
Thanks bro I’ll check ‘em out
Good video bro hopefully you can get a new trans or do a complete rebuild
Thanks 👊
just remove trans cross member bolt lower with jack and use a 36" extention with a swivel and im pact those bolts come out easy
It’s like that on a 90 ranger too
A pain!!
@@RM_Garage im legit binge watching your videos. You should turn the 4runner into a overlanding rig.
@@stephenhilton4665 Thanks!! There is some news to come with the 4runner....just can't tell ya yet!

I cant wait to pass through cali and roll coal for all those who have to pass smog🤣
Our laws truly are ridiculous. Also if you have a diesel that’s like pre-97 or something there is no smog here. Makes sense right?
If u need smog hit me up my cali peeps lmao 🤣
