I did the same with my 1990. As I took the parts out I put them in order on a coat hanger. Then a bought a rebuild kit and took it to a Local transmission shop. He thanked me for keeping everything in order and because of that, he put it all back together for $200. That worked out great.
Dude this could not come at a better time!!! I'm doing the exact same thing right now with my 87 4runner. 387k miles not bad for a transmission that's been a wheeler since birth lol 😆
Great video, won't be rebuilding that transmission (or any others) any time soon, but you made it look very doable if one can keep all the parts in sequence. Also, haha, you thought it might be 30 minutes, still worth the time to spend the 50+ minutes, very interesting.
Thank you for making this video! I’m pretty confident I can rebuild mine after having a local shop “did it”, but then had the 1st gear lock out. …Although I might just send it off and have Marlin knock it out for me haha😅
Just amazing how you make it look so easy I am one of those people who check several times to make sure it ok my transmission is auto but I want to change it to a five speed manual after watching I am sure I can do it thank you this is going to help lots of people who are thinking of doing this work keep working on it. A big fan. JoP
Have 91 4wd pickup 383000 miles, same trans ,rebuilt once already ,have two of the W56's , easier to swap out when needed.Great detail and editing, nice job overall , running through the gears at the end very satisfying.
Halfway through a rebuild of completely different box, first time, learning curve is steep. Your bit on the synchros really helped me out. PF6 six speed (vauxhall vivaro 2.0 CDTi). Selector rod shaft was messed up, all bearings needed replacing and 5/6th synchro had jammed up while trying to spit its internal springs out.. could have been worse...
Great for me! I´ve to rebuild a G58 Gear but an other guy dismanled it. He put all in one box 🤨😮💨Because you filmed it so detailed it´s easy for me to put erverything to his right place. Thank you very, very much.
You got lucky. At 16:24 you slid off the bearing in front of the 4th counter gear. It's supposed to be a press fit. If I could get mine to slide off along with the 4th counter gear, then I could easily replace the input shaft w/o disassembling the transmission.
On the assembly, when you install the transfer case adapter, I wish there was more detail or explanation on how the shift for needs to be oriented..Ive put the cases back together only to find I didnt have it lined up properly so the shift linkage wouldnt budge. I know there is a particular way it needs to be installed...little to no info on that crucial step
I want to say that at the 17 min mark you discussed not using the side race of the new bearing. its not a spacer. its a redesigned bearing that fits the exact same as the old one when installed. i think using a new style bearing with the old style side race might cause issues sooner or later.
It’s regular to feel the bearing rolling along the shaft as you free spin it right? And the main shaft moving back and fourth with the snap rings on? Not pulling my hairs over here thinking it’s a bad bearing
You likely dodged a bullet by finding the 3rd synchro slop before assembly. I had my 1987 W56 rebuilt back in '09 and the new 3rd synchro would last after about a month before the transmission wouldn't stay in 3rd gear. The shop tore the transmission apart again to replace that synchro and again same problem. On the third case cracking, they sourced a 3rd synchro from a different supplier (different country) and it has been running fine ever since.
Is there a place to get gears? I’m worried I may have been a little too rough with my ‘94 and it makes some squealing/scraping sounds in 3, 4, & 5 gears
When pressing the bearings or hubs onto any of the shafts. How did you know when the part was pressed far enough or in the right location on the shaft?
So I just went through my w55 and I have it back in the car. Everything is great except it won't engage into 5th gear 🤦♂️ Any thoughts of why that is?
RM, How many actual man hours did this take you? Might be helpful for those of us mustering up the drive to take this on…. Thanks for taking the time on this video! Well done!
Definitely useful and very informative video ! I was wondering if you can maybe share the link of where you got your rebuild kit? I was reading on the comments you got it from ebay . I want to buy the same kit . Great content by the way !
Are the needle bearings under the gears the original bearings or did you replace those as well? If you did replace these needle bearings where can you find them at?
Hey, thanks for watching! I got it from eBay, the seller was brgpt, also known as transpartswarehouse out of Redding, California. They were all OEM spec NSK, Nachi, Koyo bearings.
@@RM_Garage not sure how much my toyota l52 differs from yours. I need to rebuild it and replace all of the bearings. Your video is easy to follow, and gives me hope.
I don't believe you put thread sealant on the 7 bolts holding the input seal plate in place. I did not use sealant on the bolts either, and I had a major leak from that plate. Did your transmission leak from the input shaft plate?
@@RM_GarageSweet, good to know. I'm getting ready to do a rebuild on my 89 pickup. Thanks for the video, will be a huge help! How's the transmission doing 2yrs post rebuild?
my input bearing is sealed and all the video I've seen they are not sealed. my rebuild kit has a unsealed bearing but its to big on the inner diameter on the shaft anyone seen this before did I buy the wrong kit
This is a video series that will eventually have 100K views because it is the comprehensive standard for W56 rebuilds.
👍👍
Could I ask why you put the small notch on the hub and synchro
I did the same with my 1990.

I'm rebuilding my w56 this weekend. I have the factory service manual but still will be watching your video also. Thanks for this awesome video!
Nice! An FSM would’ve been great to have 😅 good luck!

Very big thanks for you Maestro, this video gives me alot of idea on how to rebuild this matter as a begginer mechanics.
Congratulations! Your face said it all...couldn't smile any more than that!👍🏻👍🏻
I'm stoked on this project! It went so well and I love digging into technical stuff like this.
Absolutely enjoyed 1 hr of watching you put that back together.
underrated channel i’m rebuilding my transmission this winter and will definitely be coming back for this video
Really appreciate that and I hope it helps!

Nice dude, been following the whole series. Glad to see so many yota guys coming out on RUclips. Keep it up.

Excellent tutorial, thank you.
Great vid! I can tell you're a motorcycle mechanic. Very thorough job!
Incredibly Excellent, Bro. I know I can do it now thanks to you!!
So complicated and you make it look easy! Great content and super informational
Thanks for helping me install the shafts! So much easier with help 😋
When fully reassembled should the input shaft spin freely no matter what gear its in?
top work man, excellent video. top dedication and hard work.
Megusta explicado con detalles. Solo que hablo poquito inglés pero con ver lo movimiento entiendo. Muy bien echo. Desde Nicaragua 🇳🇮 saludes

Yeah, damn. These aftermarket synchros really are hit or miss.
So on your window regulator you need to weld a washer where your handle pivots
Good work

great work!

hi, what tools does one need to rebuild? I don't have any experience but I am patient and want to do my own work.
When pressing the bearings or hubs onto any of the shafts. How did you know when the part was pressed far enough or in the right location on the shaft?
They hit a stopping point where you can feel the press is no longer “pressing”.
Well done!
It took a lot longer than it would've if I wasn't recording. With recording, probably 6 hours or so for the reassembly?
Definitely useful and very informative video ! I was wondering if you can maybe share the link of where you got your rebuild kit? I was reading on the comments you got it from ebay . I want to buy the same kit . Great content by the way !
Thanks! I'll add it to the description.
Hello, can you send me the information about the kit you need to repair the transmission?
Are the needle bearings under the gears the original bearings or did you replace those as well? If you did replace these needle bearings where can you find them at?
Originals, did not replace them.
I like this work
I need to find a video like this about the g52 for my 85
What if you omit the keys on the sycronizer?
Love your content 👍
looks excactly like my r-150f. Will the kit be alright for the '914runner with an r150f ?
I'm sure it's very similar and this video can be used loosely to help rebuild the R150F. The rebuild kit will be different.
Thank you, great video
Where did you pick up your rebuild kit? I have to rebuild mine in the next month or so.
Hey, thanks for watching! I got it from eBay, the seller was brgpt, also known as transpartswarehouse out of Redding, California. They were all OEM spec NSK, Nachi, Koyo bearings.
Fantastic
The warning is good
Great Video. New subscriber!
Thanks!
@@RM_Garage not sure how much my toyota l52 differs from yours. I need to rebuild it and replace all of the bearings. Your video is easy to follow, and gives me hope.
Where can I get a press like yours
Excellent
is this the same process for the W46? i cant find ANYTHING on that trans.
I'm not sure, but it's probably similar.
thank you
So my question is, how did everything work out in the end after install?
Perfectly!
Love this stuff! Any chance you can show how the shifter selects which pushrod to actuate?
orale muy buen video bien explicado el proceso felicidades,,,!
Thank you sir
Overfilled my transmission now I have a hot mess under the truck. Will be draining some out by the way my fill plug is stripped.
Ah man. Yeah I always check the fill plug before the drain plug. If it’s a manual you can fill it through the shifter hole.
I don't believe you put thread sealant on the 7 bolts holding the input seal plate in place. I did not use sealant on the bolts either, and I had a major leak from that plate. Did your transmission leak from the input shaft plate?
I honestly don't remember if I did or not. I think I used gascasinch or a similar product. It didn't leak.
@@RM_Garage ok, thanks for the reply
Thanks
Who did you purchase the rebuild kit from? Great video
Thanks! Check the description of the video
What size is the pipe that you were to press the different bearings on?
I’d have to check but I believe it’s 2” and also has a coupler on the other end which is slightly larger and has a wider footprint
Where can I get that kit? I have an 87 with a W56 trans. Thanks.
I got it from eBay. I think the link is in the description.
Fantastic job on this video and your last one. I am getting ready to do my W56 soon. Who did you end up going with on the rebuild kit?
Thanks! Appreciate it. I went through a company called trans parts warehouse, they also have an ebay store, and it was all NSK/Koyo/Nachi bearings.
@@RM_Garage Have you reinstalled it yet in your truck? If so how did it do?
@@Mike_Allegro Not yet, but soon! Other projects taking up my time at the moment.
@@RM_Garage Just completed my W56 rebuild and everything works great!! Thanks again for making such a great video.

Sheesh I passed right by it 🙃. How are they holding up? Since they are ebay. And marlin crawler kit is been out of stock for months.
@@gufiaito69able The bearings were OEM Nachi & NSK so I trust it completely. Kit was great and transmission works perfectly.
