This is a great story on Ron. Totally accurate down to the alarm clocks. He gave me one of those "Baby Ben's" when I overslept one morning. It would ring loudly for 10 seconds then stop. It kept this up until you got out of bed and went across the room to stop it. I gave the obnoxious thing to his next morning producer after changing to more sane business hours. It was the most effective alarm clock I've ever seen, but I hated the damned thing.
"...an awful song by a man named Elvis..." LOL I never heard that story. Ron said the same thing about "Bridge Over Troubled Water" when it first came out (among other #1's) and missed adding "Love Will Keep Us Together" until I returned from a two week vacation. I learned so much from Ron over the years and will be eternally grateful. He is brilliant in so many areas, but he didn't have time to follow the music trends. Luckily.I can usually hear a hit a mile away. Growing up listening to legendary KLIF 1190 and being KVIL's music director (as well as wearing many other caps) for eight years kept us musically-relevant, even though the station was built on so many other aspects like crazy promotions & contests and our engaging, friendly personalities.

Met Ron in 97 when I was at ABC RN on Montfort..later as Chief Engineer at Mix102.9 and 97.1, I engineered several Cowboys Radio Network games when KVIL was the flagship and ran into Ron many times, once he was in his robe and flip-flops! A great DJ, personality and loved his job..he was lucky...he did radio right..as it still should be...RIP my friend...you are missed..

This was back in the 1990s and the whole radio broadcasting industry has completely changed...and not in a good way.

This was taped back in the early 1990s while the Internet was still in its infancy.

So do they still pay tremendous amounts of money to radio personalities nowadays?

The radio landscape has completely changed and there are few DJ positions available. The Telecom Act of 1996 was the beginning of the end.

For regular radio people, no. Ron finished his radio career at KLUV in 2005. He was the last of the Dallas greats, with big salary to match. So much radio is syndicated or "voice-tracked" today. Fewer live shows, so much less opportunity for developing new talent and the pay is lousy ... about $10-15 per hour. It's a shame, but the radio business got greedy, with the likes of Clear Channel and Randy Michaels. It's no longer about quality programming, but advertising revenue.
