    3 wood all day. I know what shape and where exactly the ball is going to land.
    Im planning to get driver lessons. Although my driver is a power fade/slice, no where near as predictable. But the extra distance is always an advantage when I do hit one well.

    Often times modern drivers are 3 inches longer than a 3 wood which definitely can make them harder to hit solidly and control. I've had so many players ask me why they hit their 3 wood further than their driver. Obviously there are a lot of factors for each golfer, but until they learn to hit that driver solidly a 3 wood from the tee can be a good option. Thanks, Mark!

    Really great to see this covered - Back when my 3 wood wasnt so old I had 2 distinct wear marks on my R11 3 wood. One in the centre (from the deck) and one slightly in the high toe (from the tee) - unfortunately after so many years they have now merged.
    This difference in delivery is not fully understood by most golfers, and the benefits it can bring! Know your patterns people !!!

    Great video Mark. I'm a right handed, high handicapper and use the 3 wood off the tee when there is trouble up the right. My bad shot with the driver is a slice (frankly, more likely when there is pressure), so for me, the 3 wood can be a very good option.

    One of my favorite clubs off to tee off with. I'm used to hitting it off the ground which is why I seldom tee it up. I don't mind the fade, but I'll definitely try to tee it up if I want to go a little more left next time!!! Great stuff!

    I’ve always played a 3 wood off the tee as seem to have more confidence with it than the driver. Have had great success with a Cobra F9 3 wood dialled in at 13 degrees. Agree distance is down slightly but feel I have more control producing a nice draw shape on the ball flight. Great tips Mark ! Tees height is critical in getting a nice ball flight.

    The tee-it-up 14 degree 3wood slight Draw is a shot that everyone looking to lower their handicap should have. For the equivalent power fairway finder fade, I prefer setting up the long hybrid (18/17/16/15 degree), with a slightly open face / flat lie angle, for this purpose - so that you have both Draw & Fade setup fairway finding shorter driving clubs. I've learned this little tidbit from you Mark, years ago, in a video you made mentioning this - and also setting up your shorter 23/23/21/20 hybrid with a built-in Draw

    Since I’ve been fitted and learned how to properly hit a driver, high tee, upswing etc., I don’t really need a 3 wood. I don’t generate enough swing speed to hit a 3 wood off the ground so I use driver, 5 wood and several rinky dinks.
    Nice video Mark.

  • @jonathanstoner677

    I was really struggling to hit a hybrid without snapping it over and losing shots (and of course balls sometimes). This week I bought an old school 5 wood that was the same degree as my 3 and it's so much easier to hit off the ground or the tee. In reference to this video, I played Tuesday and Thursday this week with my sons only teeing up on the par 4's with the 5 wood so of course I was hitting 7 and 8 irons into greens instead of wedges but it's practice to hit a fairway wood from a tee, it can build confidence to it off the ground on par 5's. I compared my distance with my 3 wood, hitting very comparable shots and the difference in distance was about 10-15 yards. I play off of a 13 and use 3 wood and now 5 wood to put myself in a position to hit a full gap, wedge shot. Half or three-quarter swings have resulted in disaster at times, especially with a lofted club.

    Great video Mark and you are becoming my go to for shot advice. Real world playing advice. I think I had a tendency to hit 3 wood off the tea as I was lacking confidence with driver. • @TramSpotter649
    @TramSpotter649 4 года назад

    Good thoughts as usual Mark. I think I am more accurate with the driver, probably because it has a bigger head and I use it all the time. Our club has 27 holes, however I only tee off on one hole with a three wood (and only about 75% of the time) - shortish dogleg par 4 with a number of fairway bunkers and prevailing wind behind. I always use a tee when hitting off, but very occasionally hit a driver off the deck for my second on a par 5 (eg if it is very windy). I might try hitting off with a 3 wood without a tee in a practice round to see what happens.

  • @Mrbradlambert
    @Mrbradlambert 4 года назад

    Teed 3 woods typically end up bit pully left for me. Will try moving ball forward in stance but TBH I rely on that left curving shape because its repeatable on holes where I need to draw or at worst hit it straight. Same thing with hybrids (left/draw) whereas stock driver shot is straight. Middle aged and mid handicapper so game these days is built around error minimisation . Good thought provoking stuff as always Mark.

    Definitely find 3 wood off the tee a good option for me, seems more reliable than driver that can get a bit both ways and I feel I can shape it easier with 3 wood. When I’m hitting driver we’ll it’s longer but 3wood often as long when I’m not striking the big stick well. Really a confidence thing and just need to spend more time practicing (and using my driver) my stats show I’m fractionally hitting more fairways with 3 wood 51% to 47%

    I can't find the middle on a 460cc head to save my life.. so I recently bought an 'x2 hot 2 deep' 2 wood, consistenly rolls out to 270/80 in the fairway, never hit a driver anywhere near that far or accurately. Instantly taken me from an 18 to single figures 🤷‍♂️

    I sometimes use a 14deg TM mini driver especially in winter. My 3 wood definitely suits two or three holes on my course rather than driver but thankfully I recently found a Callaway xhot driver that I can actually use pretty accurately off the tee and it's quite forgiving as long as I don't howk it left.
    It's just good to keep options open

    I just don't get the 3 wood from the tee is more accurate argument, for me it's the opposite as it accentuates shape. I tend to only use it when it's windy and I need that squirty low fade. Also if I'm hitting driver good or bad it tends to be the same with the 3 wood. It's the swing not the club. Great video as always bruh. Love it.

    I really like how you question people taking the 3 wood off the tee!
    personally never had any success, however with the driver im fairly straight with a consistent shot shape. Average drive is 290-300, I’ve found it much more beneficial to hit driver with an “easy” swing 240-250 if I’m worried about carrying too far and into the trouble.

    @mark crossfield here’s a video I’d love to see. Modern fairways have loft adjustability such that a 5 wood can be lofted down to 16/17 degrees and 3 woods can be lofted up to 16/17 degrees. Given shaft length and lie and face angles...what happens to the numbers? What’s the science? Is the 5 wood lofted down better and more consistent or a 3 wood lofted up?

    • @wiggy123
      @wiggy123 4 года назад +1

      This is something I've often wondered too. I bought a adjustable hybrid and cranked it down to 16 and it was terrible, couldn't generate the speed with the shaft length to launch it. I think the shaft length to loft test would be super interesting.

    I had room for a 14th club in my bag. I can't, for the life of me, hit a 3/4 wood off the tee - the head just looks too small, especially off a tee. But, there are holes where I need to throttle back from a driver and needed a fairway finder. So, I bought a Thriver (43 inch shaft with a heavy 460cc 13 degree head). I can now use my 4-wood from the fairway and can hit the Thriver off the tee when needing a fairway finder. If I already had 14 clubs, then it would have been a tougher decision, but I think I would dump my 4-wood for the Thriver. If you duff a 4-wood from the fairway, it almost seems way more acceptable than duffing one for your tee shot. Hey, they tell you that you can carry 14 clubs...nobody said which 14 they have to be!

    I’ve started using my 3 wood as I’m struggling for consistency with my driver, loosing a little in distance but finding more fairways, also aware that my driver is a slice to fade and 3 wood is straight to draw. Thinking of upgrading my Dunlop tp13 for something a bit more recent, looking at m6 3wood and hoping the tech helps me get close to my driver distance

  • @michaelsteventon7649

    It's a very good point about putting speed into a 3 wood. I swapped out my 3 wood to a 5 wood and getting the same distance with more consistency. I don't think the main percentage of golfers have enough clubhead speed to make a 3 wood work? Not sure what you think of that statement Mark. Maybe a test with a mid to high handicapper. Great vid, keep it up.

      I have a ping G410 3 wood (14.5 deg) but took it out of the bag and replaced it with a G410 2 hybrid (17 deg) because it is easier to hit and I didn't lose much yardage between the 2. I hit my 3 wood 245 yards on average and the 2 hybrid 240 yards but the hybrid is far easier to hit off the fairway and in bunkers in my opinion.

    Either it's the camera angle or ? But your not playing off your left heel when teeing off with a tee. It looks more close to center mass mate..

    I have started to not trust my driver at all. Nearly every other club I have I hit straight or small draw. Pull big dawg out and I slice the arse off it!!! Think I need a fitting it is an old non adjustable driver maybe need to modernise!!!

      You need to figure out why you're going too much out to in on the driver.
      New driver even if it's fitted will do the same thing.
      Check grip, get it stronger see more knuckles, path of your swing and if you can... Go see a pro.

      @@natskis could have an in to out swing though and still slice it, I do as my wrist angles are terrible!
      Could also be tee height, stance, hips, shoulders, grip, head, and so on 😂 golf is hard....

      @@lukeanderson773 I don't think you can slice if you have an in to out path. Trackman data shows that if you go in to out, it'll, make the ball go right to left. Like bending a soccer ball.
      When the ball shoots off direction wise is 80% based on the face of the club head.
      Your changing wrist angles, hips etc could cause the club to go out to in on some swings.
      I tend to do that when i'm trying to rip the cover off the ball.
      I throw the club out further and it starts coming out to in and I get a wicked slice.
      Go to see a pro that uses gcquad or a trackman.

    Would 5 wood off the tee be any better than 3 wood?

    I definitely miss more fairways with 3 wood vs driver. Must be an old theory which is clearly out dated with modern tech

  • @tshirttan
    @tshirttan 4 года назад

    I think the fairways missed stat is misleading. Yes I might miss the same amount, but the misses are bigger with the driver. Lost balls Vs balls in the rough, no brainer for me

      Defo in play is the key.

    • @lukeanderson773

      Play a lot of doglegs at my course so the ball can run out to the semi rough on good drives, my fairways hit stats aren't great but it's in play way more than the stats suggest
      Greens in reg is another story though....
