Start the Morphy Saga here • The Pride and Sorrow o...
This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

Can't wait for the bar and library to re-open so i can tell my friends that!
lol
😂😂😂
Looks like you might have to wait for 18 months. Dont worry it's for your own good. There's a nasty flu out there...
It is nasty but very likely not a flu
😂😂😂😂😂
That wasn’t a disgusting engine line, that was a Tal line.
It was a shit line. Morphy can just play his king to the right of the board and he's completely safe
@@michaeltrumph121 congratulations master, u have just lost a bishop for playing king f8
@@1.4142
No. when he shows that computer line, why doesn't he ever go to the right with the king ?
@@michaeltrumph121 because, you lose a bishop for no reason lol
@@morallygray6527
At around 3:20, what if u play queen d6 instead of queen e6 ?
That way, u protect both the bishop and u make room for your king on e6.
"Nasty Discoveries" should be a shirt in your merch store
a lot of nasty discoveries
And the #1 adult film of 2020 goes to "A Lot Of Nasty Discoveries"
"Improve the position of the king"
Yeah, way better than some of the lame catch phrases like Hello Everyone.
I was thinking this here also. He says it every video but quite a bit here. I love it
My friends at the library AND bar were so shocked, some dropped their chess books others dropped their beer mugs.
If my internet service provider provides me with the service of internet 😂
Ah yes
oh nostalgia
ok.
Old but gold.
Still reality in Australia.
"And it is in this position that Paul Morphy resigned the game" is almost as incredible to hear as "and it is in this position that Stockfish resigned the game". Kudos to Paulsen, didn't know what a hell of a player he was!
Paulsen was a top class player, although he wouldn't hit his prime until later into the 1870's. Worth noting that his road to the final match was much the same as Morphy's - round 1: 3-0, round 2: 2-0, round 3: 2.5-0.5(opponent resigned the match after 2 losses for whatever reason). He was by and large the 2nd best player in America, and given that #1 was Mr. Morphy, that's quite the accomplishment.
Morphy 😂. Are you a Ben Fan?
Paulsen is one of the greatest of his era for sure. There were other great players back then and Paulsen is one of them
"Tilted." Nobody is immune...
So thats how Morphy plays when he is tilted
I never get tilted.
son of morphy
Sometimes I get so over the top tilted. I mean shaking with utter rage. Often I go on a win streak at such times.
@@paulmorphy6314 hi
Why is Morphy playing two games in a row with black? Especially since in game 4 (if i remember correctly) he will have black also .
ghiles ziat good question some please answer!
Check description
@@Kellestial I can't find the answer to his question in the description, if there is one
back in those days, many match conditions were written like "twenty one games, draws not counting." Sometimes players took this literally and kept their colours in the next game. If you go back to Morphy's match against Lichtenhein, he also has Black two games in a row, for the same reason.
Felipeeefl I never said the answer was in the description, I just said to check it :0
"It was in this position that Paul Charles Morphy resigned the game."
The rarest thing I have ever heard ☹️

I would never resign. That was an imposter.
@@paulmorphy6314 just admit it, you have weak psyche
Herbert Gearing oh don't worry, Morphy only lost 2 games in this match, and i think he won 5 or 7 was it? against Paulsen... I can't remember.. But i remember that he only lost 2 games in this

These Paulsen Morphy power rangers
2:58 “For those of you who were able to to it, congratulations, as both Paulsen and Morphy missed it. You are an excellent user of engines.”
Even back then they could play games of chess with peace
Now we have Coronavirus
That High Guy Yeah, they had plague, cholera, yellow fever, polio among other worse substitutes. Morphy died from infection caused by a scratch from the wide rim of another man’s hat. An impacted tooth could kill you. No vaccines other than for anthrax which was only given to livestock. Anesthesiologists had ether and morphine which were tricky and deadly. Wake up and thank the universe that you’re alive in 2020. This COVID will kill as many as a bad flu season. China and Italian cases are dropping and the vast majority of deaths occur in seniors with underlying conditions. A buddy of mine died at 29 from simple pneumonia that didn’t respond to antibiotics. Death will take all so you might as well live now.
@@ChrisHyde537 Coronavirus would have killed up to 90 million people without the mass quarantine effort.
@@ChrisHyde537 By Morphy did you mean Paul C. Morphy's father?
V Sharma Yeah,
Thanks for the videos. Maybe Morphy was still fuming they hadn't yet invented the chess clock, but fair play to Paulsen who apparantly was a gentleman despite taking forever to move. After all he was playing Morphy.
10:39 -- Keeping that knight off of f4 is so important that the engine proclaims Bg5 as Black's best move (instead of the disastrous rook slide), after which a rating of only +1.3 at depth 30 (and declining as calculation continues) indicates that the position can be held to a draw.
very help ful...greatings chess channel gemini49...
I can't believe he resigned so shocking I thought he was invincible
Nella Albarracin, he also lost a game to Adolf Andersen who played a3 as a first move.
ok.
Can’t win them all sadly
I wanted to be the first to comment but you guys are so fast!!!
He, Morphy, seemed more reckless than patient here. He was upset at himself, and I personally don't think Morphy respected Paulson after their blindfold match and then the last game where Paulson took long. Possibly a tactic on Paulson's part? Test the patience of Morphy while seeming to be confused/ unaware of Morphy's intentions?
You may learn much more from a game you lose than from a game you win. You will have to lose hundreds of games before becoming a good player. +-
Where my Morphy gang?
Sup??
HELLO EVERYONE
0:47
Thanks agarmator it's 2 am in India and I could not find new content. So Cheers to you again.😅
I can't believe Morphy would do this 😭 I'm crying and shaking rn
"If my internet service provider provides me with internet" 😂😂😂
He was probably joking but they are talking about cutting "non essential" feeds.
Well it is hard to imagine that Morphy resigned and Paulsen won to me Morphy is the goat well Paulsen came prepared did his homework well Morphy was a natural while Paulsen was the studious type well hardwork pays but still a great game how strange Morphy the attacker was on defensive mode through out no brilliancy moves here but still a wonderful game agad great job I can't wait what happens next thks to you you made my day as we are in lockdown in india first thing I did in morning watched your upload thks again
CHESS!!!
for once I see the disgusting engine line
27... f5 and 28... Re6: suicide moves by Morphy. 28. e5, 29. Nf4 and 30. Rxd7 are the machine moves, Paulson exploited the mistakes well.
at 10:41 why doesn't nd4 work?it has the same idea of kicking away the rook but this time it also hits the c6 pawn directly
God resigned
Will you be playing for your team in todays tournament?
No, I Will ne showing games played by our team
13:18 if my internet service provider provides me with the service of internet... lmaoooo.. gets me everytime
Missed the disgusting engine line - I had N-d5!? B cannot Q-Q1 so if PxN, BxBcheck, KxB RxPcheck and the B will fall... and the KP looks vulnerable.
Is that any good?? I don't have a chess engine as I don't actually play chess, so an answer would be nice!
True. First Tym to hear those words, "...and Paul Morphy resigned the game!" He's probly tired of winning!
@11:44
"Game 3 of their match in 1857 at the First American Chess Congress went to Louis Paulsen. Do mention this to your friends at the bar and the library."
LOL
On 21. c4, 21... h3 22. Qe3 h3 (and not g3) 23. g3 is the best line for Black, contrary to what Mr. Radić says.
Is chess.com overrun with cheaters? I get rocked by 1100s but am over 2000 on lichess. I can beat my friend regularly and he is 2200 fide. Maybe 4 out of ten on a good day so I figure I'm about 17-1800 Fide. So why am I getting smoked by 1100s on this one cite?
Even getting 1 game against morphy is tough. I like you aggy buy c'mon morphy didn't lose because of his state of mind, Paulsen just played a 9 and morphy a 8.
Morphy continues happily attacking...LOL
Hi Antonio have you yet seen this www.chess.com/news/view/teimour-radjabov-interview-fide-candidates-chess
Had he not charged with his knight, I think Morphy would be winning at move 12 castling king-side. He was too rash with his king exposed.
I did see the Rook capture and realized it was a pin I’m an exceptional chess player 😅 also saw the knight to e4 move congratulations to myself again
Due to corona outbreak I am @home....so I gonna tell my parents....😁😁😁
He did what??? If the bar and library were open I would tell people that Morphy resigned and of course they would look at me like a weirdo and tell me to shut up. Ah good times.... In these difficult times I am very grateful to have my Croatian friend telling stories and enhancing knowledge. Cheers everyone.
I think Morphy made a mistake he didn't play Evans or king's as he was playing black no fried liver or traxler variation imho he should have played Dutch as he did against harwitz may be it would have been different and one more thing the rook*bishop move I doubt Morphy missed it he was hoping Paulsen would not play it or game over but I think Paulsen was afraid to play it he played cautious as he was winning anyway both were too good to miss it it's just a bunch we can't tell 150 years back anyway thks again I'm watching it again I can't digest that Morphy lost Paulsen is a terrific theorist and tactician
4:24 why not just knight capture bishop? its fall with check and after black recapture, white go bishop to d8 check and take the queen. white also have more pawn so should be winning endgame right?
Agad with his nasty engines lines
Paul morphy and Paulsen that don't even have computers for over 100 years more: am I a joke to you?
Paulson played an excellent game I guess Morphy is similar to being a Magnus of that era very rarely lost Nice Game Thanks Agadmator have to enjoy these pre engine games players won and lost on their own talent
again morphy with black pieces? why?
Morphy was a chess engine no doubt well sometimes engines can go haywire but Morphy was human after all even the infallible can fall the invincible can be defeated this is the lesson of life I'm watching this game the third time to see where Morphy went wrong believe me I'm in shock I've watched hundred games of Morphy never caved in like this before both games were disasters for Morphy I consider him the God of chess mho alone can someone tell me what happened to Morphy I mean I can't get over the first two games agad sir can you explain please
1709th next time first hopefully
It is a shame that because of our perspective we tend to evaluate more modern players as stronger. I believe that despite seemingly lower levels of competition, a dominant champion of any Era could be competitive in the modern Era if they were born in our time. You learn from the experience you have, and chess is about learning and adapting.
13:18 if my internet service provider provides me with the service of internet
Sergio Starseeker #agadmator quote
😂😂
Isn't it weird to have to play 2 black games back to back?
So many unnecessary explanations over and over and over
Again Morphy with the black pieces ???
“Nasty discoveries” that sounds like my attitude towards women
I always laugh when you say "disgusting engine line"
Louis Paulsen had White two times in a row. He was White in previous video too. Why?
This just makes him even more of an anime character.
Great game! Oh and by the way i found the disgusting engine line :).
If I was white at 3:00 I’d play knight to D5 u will see why after you add everything up
This didn't play well. Take the Morphy head away from him
I like Morphy but paulsens idea is also amazing
Why is Morphy black in back to back games??
Aaah... The Good Stuff...!
I got BOTH pause the videos right. My day is made 🥳
Finally he lost! Thanx 4 your videos
Such a shame I can't like many times....
Game should have been continued...
So wanted you to give Paulsen a Morphy head here.
the good stuff>the candidates 2020
It's good to see Morphy lose finally
Any one happy for louis paulsen🙏🙏😁😁
Nasty discoveries are the best discoveries
Time for Morphy to start kicking ass
I saw the move at 3:06, but I would not have spotted it over the board.
Why does it say he is live now on my list on the left? I don't see a place to click.
That b4 move is like Evans gambit ;)
Credit to Paulsen tho he played a good game.
Who are the people that dislike these video??? Haha
Look how they massacred my boy..
I would love to watch your video. Looking forward to the match between Topalov vs Kasparov 1999
Welcome back to the good stuff.
