i had a chocolate labrador who passed away 3 years ago. we used to always compare her to a bear (she was a little tubby & had some killer instincts) and so i really love watching the bears and imagining one of them is my jeffrey in her next life♥️

    Which one is OTIS?

  • @OBIIIIIIIII
    @OBIIIIIIIII 2 года назад +4

    I have so many questions:
    - How many fish does a bear catch in a day?
    - what is the bears’ average catch success rate?
    - what percentage of fish make it through to spawn upstream?
    - approx how many fish make it upstream to spawn in total?
    - how many calories does a bear consume from a single fish and how many do they need minimum to hibernate?
I would be very grateful if you can answer even just one :)

    • @nardaviiel
      @nardaviiel 2 года назад +5

I can't answer all of these, but here's what I've been able to learn:
-A bear's number of fish per day depends on a lot of things. The number I've heard is that large, successful bears could catch up to 30 in one day when the salmon are most plentiful, although they don't all catch that many or need to. A lot of it is skill and dominance, but Otis, old and arthritic with missing teeth but likely extremely hungry, showed up and had 49 catches on camera the other day.
-Each fish contains several thousand calories, but the bears don't always eat the entire fish. Once they're more well-fed, they start to high-grade the fish, which means that they fill up on only the fattiest parts (specifically skin, head, roe) and drop the rest. Otis, with his missing teeth, has struggled with this.

      1. How many fish does a bear catch in a day?
A lot! On days when many salmon are migrating in the river, a large and dominant male bear will sometimes catch and eat more than 30 fish per day. Smaller bears that cannot compete for the best fishing spots, or bears that are less skilled at fishing, may catch and eat considerably less fish.- Nps
      www.nps.gov/katm/learn/photosmultimedia/brown-bear-frequently-asked-questions.htm#9
      medium.com/@exploreorg/how-many-salmon-will-a-bear-eat-94d3d212f178
Though Otis once have eaten around 42 fishes.
      2. what is the bears’ average catch success rate?
I guess it is hard to tell and depends on whether he is fishing. Also it depends on salmon run condition like sometimes is just favorable and sometimes it looks like there are few in river.
      3. what percentage of fish make it through to spawn upstream?
Cumulative escapement for Naknek river is around 1.5-2 Million (though it vary each season, like last year it was around 4 Million and for some season it was around 1 million). This data gives idea that around avg. 20% comes to brooks river to spawn.
      www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=commercialbyareabristolbay.salmon#fishcounts
      4. Approx how many fish make it upstream to spawn in total?
What we have knew that around 80% of them make it. Though success rate of jumping is low like 6.56%, but eventually most of them make it.
200,000 to 400,000 salmon may successfully leap Brooks Falls each year.
      www.nps.gov/katm/blogs/dynamics-of-the-brooks-river-sockeye.htm
      blog.explore.org/keep-jumping-salmon-you-can-do-it/
      5. how many calories does a bear consume from a single fish and how many do they need minimum to hibernate?
      Ans.
A sockeye salmon fresh from the ocean has about 4,500 calories while a spawned out salmon in September may only have half that many. Salmon do not eat once they reenter fresh water. They are slowly starving, only surviving on stored body fat. That, combined with the tremendous energetic demands of spawning, lowers the total energy (calories) in each salmon over time.
      www.nps.gov/katm/learn/photosmultimedia/sockeye-salmon-frequently-asked-questions.htm
They still need to burn many calories per day while hibernating-sometimes more than 4000 calories per day. When they emerge from their dens in the spring, bears have lost up to 33% of their body weight.(Bears do get double in size during salmon season. ) Lactating females can lose even more weight.
      www.nps.gov/katm/blogs/bear-hibernation.htm
though I am not bear expert, but these info. what i learned. Hopefully it helped. You can always ask experts on explore.org and Rangers like Mike Fitz, Naomi on youtube live chat channel. ( ask mod schedule rangers often comes to chat)

@@nardaviiel yes, 480 otis had an epic daily catch the evening he first showed up on july 26 and he has not slowed down since while the fish are still plentiful. the salmon do seem to be a bit smaller in size this season so they might need to consume more to get the calorie count up though.

"Amazing Salmon Catches!" - "amazing" from the point of view of the bears, "devastating" from the point of view of the salmon.
The implied point of view of the cinematographer biases us (as the viewer) to root for the bear. An equally valid alternative cinematic point of view would bias us to root as strongly for the salmon.
It is critical to understand how our sympathies and loyalties are subject to this type of manipulation, and how biases are formed to influence the choices we unconsciously make.
