Wonderful. I knew the fabled 1955 Ahmad Jamal Trio version, but this is my fish time hearing 'original' orchestral version, this is incredible, it's kinda 'impressionistic' in the sense that I hear a bit of Ravel's 'Le Tombeau De Cuperin' (the Minuet), but also a bit of Frode Gofré's 'Grand Canyon Suite', Thank you so much. I really love late 19th century and 20th century 'modern' and post modern 'Classical' that is harmonically and colouristically rich, It's amazing how much these harmonics concept have influenced Jazz, especially the more contemporary, Post Modern Post Bop Jazz. Thanks for sharing.
It's plausible that Coltrane came up with the melody for Impressions completely on his own. But I think if he did consciously borrow it, Impressions doesn't really sound anything like Gould's Pavanne in the end, so his integrity isn't at stake either way.
I'd love to know that too, would be great if they posted the whole concert..... BTW, What an incredible looking and incredibly great sounding theater/recital hall.

Adopted by John Coltrane as Impression....
I don't think on purpose, considering his integrity as musician and composer:)
@@FrancescoDiodatiMusic it was certainly on purpose. He took it and made it his own, nothing wrong with that.
@@zachwalgren1694 who knows! I stil didn't find something about that (John talking, or some of his colleagues or relatives)

You can imagine Mr Coltrane pissing off the conductor when he was learning this in college.
A little masterpiece.
A piece famous by the great Glenn Miller cover of 1939.
Nice :)
When did this performance take place?
I'd love to know that too, would be great if they posted the whole concert..... BTW, What an incredible looking and incredibly great sounding theater/recital hall.
What year was this written?
1938
1944.
Now, I'm led to believe it was 1939. www.allmusic.com/composition/american-symphonette-no-2-for-orchestra-mc0002355371
I know it was Covered by Glenn Miller (I heard that version first), and the Bridge formed the Basis for John Coltrane's Impressions.
