Fun fact: In the Legion ending, it is heavily implied that the Courier is made the new heir to the title of Caesar, due to Edward having images of the Courier's face minted on coins-- a common method used by the Romans to inform the common people of who their new leader was.

I can see the Courier becoming the new Caesar, depending on his build (Caesar would definitely see the value in a high INT/CHA/Speech/Barter character as his successor for example) but I think the most likely outcome is that the Courier would become one of the Frumentarii.

The fact that Picus fought alongside NCR troopers against his own tribesmen - no doubt killing many of them in the process - shows just how dedicated he is to Caesar and the Legion. He is willing to kill his own legionaries so as to not blow his cover and reveal his identity. That is coldblooded commitment.
As for unusual roles like explorers, blacksmiths, slavemasters, and others, these are probably equivalent to real-world specialists, although not identical. They specialize in certain fields, indicated by their occupational titles. Also, instructors are obviously equivalent to drill sergeants.

I'm glad you recognized Lucius and his Praetorian Guard as equal to Lanius and Vulpes. The biggest question about who takes over after Caesars is always between Vulpes and Lanius, with the obvious assumption that Lanius would come out on top as he controls most of the military, but I think Lucius is not only in the running as well, but the best option. He was Caesar's friend, closest counselor, and both a great military commander and level-headed governor. Perfect middle ground between Vulpes and Lanius.

They could keep following on from Roman history and form a triumvirate, ruling over a third of the territories each, but then that'd reject the whole "one above all", strongest survives philosophy the Legion has. Lucius is probably the best option to take over, but with Lanius being a borderline mythical figure to the Legion in a similar way to Graham and Caesar, the majority of the faction would likely get behind him. Even if Vulpes and Lucius were to team up against him, well placed spies, elite guards and likely a few groups of legionaries wouldn't stand a chance against a horde of glorified insane tribal worshippers that are more scared of the monster behind them than the enemies ahead.

The thing everyone forgets about Vulpes is that he was only made a Frumentarri because 1. He was able to remain calm in a hectic battle and realize a weakness in the enemy’s formation, and lead his contuberia through the gap without losing control of them in the chaos. 2. His plan actually worked. Caesar likes results. If Vulpes had failed to capture the enemy chieftain, he would have been killed.

I've always wondered how often the legion hires mercenaries. It'd be cool to have a fallout counterpart to the Romans' Visigoths, even if Caesar should know how detrimental that would be to his nation. He does hire people outside the legion for combat roles, like the courier, and even pays them in gold coins and items forbidden to legionaries. We can see Caesar's views of mercenaries shine through in his treatment of the Brotherhood of Steel and the destruction of Camp Searchlight. The short-term gains of using outside forces would have to be balanced against long-term outcomes. If a group cannot be assimilated, it has to be destroyed to maintain Caesar's cultural hegemony.
The Legion clearly has no issue with sending legionaries to their certain deaths. Vulpes Inculta knew full well what was being stored in the fire station at Camp Searchlight when legionaries were sent to open the nuclear waste containers. In a society that ruthless and reliant on maintaining it's culture at all costs, why would the Legion need to hire mercs? The Legion is happy to throw enough bodies at a problem until it is gone and by assimilating other tribes, they will have no shortage of those.

Edit is for tips for anyone doing a Caesars legion playthrough:
    1. If you are liked by Caesar’s legion you can go to Lucius in Caesar’s tent he gives you the Caesar’s legion safe house key. Go there and talk to Veteran Atticus for one of the most OP safe house rewards… semi infinite stealth boys. He gives you 2 of them every 3 days so can just wait and get a load of them off him.
    2. If you are doing no stims or med playthrough USE HEALTH POULTICES they are your best friend and heal way more than stimpacks anyways just do honest hearts and LOAD UP on Xander and Broc Flower don’t waste it on making stims or recipes unless you HAVE to!
    3. There is a slave girl in the cantina by the fighting pit in Caesar’s inner fort encampment. She can give you 6 free healing powder at a time once every 24 hrs it also helps for heals without stimpacks and especially if your doing a lore playthrough without meds as a legion player.
I did a stealth/ melee/ throwing weapon playthrough player that couldn’t use meds or stims so I actually did surprisingly well against quarry junction… with 1-2 stealth boys at night with throwing spears and throwing hatchets/ switching to war club w mods or thermic lance with rushing waters. Eventually when my ‘soldier’ got to a higher level or ‘rank’ in my eyes I started leveling up guns to 50-75 to use shotguns or silenced sniper in a pinch rarely. It was great and makes me wish there wasn’t as much cut legion content but it was super fun with the above tips I had given to me

Nationalism is borne from free peoples who share nationhood, customs, culture, language, Caesar's Legion isn't even a nation its a best at confederation of different tribes under Caesar. It hasn't even been one generation since the inception of the Legion so these people still have their culture even if they aren't allowed to express it. His organization is more akin to Atilla's Hunnic Empire than Rome ironically.
    But overall good video.

You’re right that Caesar’s Legion isn’t Nationalist, it’s explicitly Imperialist, but Ancient Rome at its zenith was comprised of various peoples with varying cultures ranging from Britannia to Assyria that under Italian Hegemony. Thus in that regard I’d say Caesar’s Legion still similar to Rome.

    • @sebastianprimomija8375
      @sebastianprimomija8375 2 года назад

@@zackkilgore528 Superficially Caesar's Legion is Roman, but like I said its nothing more than a confederation united under a strong leader like the Steppe Tribes of old, where when a leader died the Confederation would splinter and another tribe would gain supremacy. That's what will happen to Caesar's Legion eventually.
Edit: Caesar's Legion doesn't have the institutions for anyone to say "Yep thats a Roman carbon copy." It all goes back to his Hegelian Dialectics argument. Thats why Caesar wants to conquer the NCR. Caesar needs the NCR's republican institutions paradoxically for his regime to become a nation as opposed to a Romaboo horde of Tribals.

    • @stephenwood6663
      @stephenwood6663 2 года назад

@@sebastianprimomija8375 I'm not sure I agree with your assessment about the Legion being a confederation. Confederations usually happen in order to allow tribal chiefs autonomous authority, while creating a stronger whole by having them swear allegiance to their confereration's ruler. In other words, the chiefs maintain sweeping powers in their tribe's internal matters. The Kingdom of Scythia was a good example of this kind of structure.
The Legion doesn't do this: instead, it goes out of its way to stamp out the cultural identity of the tribes it assimilates. A few, like the Hangdogs, bring specialised talents that the Legion deems worth perpetuating, but there's no indication that the assimilated tribes still have chieftains, much less that these cheiftains possess any degree of autonomy.
I agree that the Legion is likely to suffer a succession crisis upon Caesar's death, but it's for the same reason that Rome was prone to civil wars: the Imperator's authority ultimately derived from his control of Rome's armies, rather than being based on any kind of constitutional ground. Likewise, Caesar's authority is built upon his cult of personality; any successor would have to accomplish the same, to achieve not merely the obedience of the troops, but their veneration - or risk being toppled by an ambitious and popular subordinate.

You are confusing nationhood with an ethnostate. The Legion is clearly nationalist for its centrality of Fatherland.
However, it is true that the Legion is only just metamorphosing into a nation, for the proper State is One, Great, and Free (this last one has to do with the nation, not the citizenry). The Legion is for the most part One, but there is still internal division to be solved. The Legion is not quite Great, though it enjoys Imperial power, absolute and indivisible. Part of Caesar's goal is making it Great. However, the Legion is Free, dominated by no foreign powers, especially if you the player deal with the Boomers.

People can say what they want about Caesar's Legion, rightfully so, but no one can deny that all around it is an incredibly hard and disciplined society that produces some of the toughest people in the wasteland. One of the main arguments favoring the siding with this faction is that it will inevitably grow into a hard, but strong society that would be capable of unifying the wastes in a lasting era of peace and stability. Yes, it would eventually fall, like Rome, but would last a hell of allot longer than the NCR would. Judging by the corruption displayed in game, who's to say the NCR would still even be a faction 10 years down the road. The Mojave eould definitely quicken that fall, where the Legion would feel right at home in the harsh elements.

The arrangement of legionaries into recruits, veterans and primes seems to more closely follow the manipular Roman legion designations of hastati, principes and triarii while the Praetorian guard were (obviously) something that existed long after the real Caesar's assassination. I wonder how much more he could have done with the promise of farmland for old warriors. I could imagine that is how the Legion founds settlements that provide for it in terms of manpower, resources and such.

The problem with the Legion is that there isn't really a unifying history, culture, or vision. They might be compared by some to the Greeks under Alexander, or the Mongols under Genghis Khan, but the Greeks and Mongols had those things in spades; they'd grown up in the same land and with the same culture that produced their great founding hero. They could, if not match his brilliance, at least comprehend it. Alexander and Genghis Khan may not have had one singular successor ruling a singular empire, but they *did* have successors, and the Greeks and Mongols ruled the lands conquered by Alexander and Genghis for centuries.
But the Legion is just a bunch of crap some arrogant outsider has imposed on them; they don't have any real understanding of it that goes beyond "It is Caesar's will" or "Caesar says this is bad." Caesar has deliberately failed to cultivate this, because he's a power-hungry dictator. He wants absolute obedience, not understanding. He wants fawning worshipers, not educated successors.

    • @jonahhudson2052

Caesar recognizes this, and pursues two things: a Rome (a location in which Legion culture can develop and understand as the "us" of the group), and a Carthage (a group to serve as the "them" to establish what the Legion is working against.)
Rome is Vegas, and the NCR, for now, is Carthage.
Unfortunately, if Caesar ends up conquering California, he'll need to replace the NCR with the Brotherhood, as they're the only similarly sized group who are ideologically opposed and militarily powerful enough to take this role, but the switch may hurt.
Finally, he wants to "cannibalize" the values of the NCR in order to create a super society with the benefits of both. In Caesar's eyes, the defining factor of the Legion is it's Utilitarianism, which betrays all other aspects; the Legion despises technological dependency, yet will use technology when needed. It sees women are taking a caretaking and maintenance role in society, but is willing to work with a female courier (even make her leader if you believe Caesar is making you a protege), etc. Caesar believes that the Legion, when it has these things, will simply reshape itself as many times as need be in order to become whatever is needed at the time. But until he has these two things, the Legion is little more than a warlord's band of tribals; like the Mongols, as you said, and will collapse without him.

I didn’t realize until now that the bill of sale we find in Jeannie’s safe is actually the only document that references a Consul in Caesar’s Legion.
    A little history:
Consuls were the equivalent of the President of a country. They were (typically) elected by the people in pairs of two, and would work on and off as the head of state. When one of the Consuls was in power, this is referred to as the Consul “holding Fasces.” The Consul not in power is considered a “Co-Consul,” the equivalent (in name and some function) of a Vice President. Co-Consuls often times had the first say in debates over a bill in the Roman Senate, after the Consul holding fasces at the time is done speaking. If the two consuls were opposed politically, this means either one could filibuster the bill, essentially making it dead on arrival.
Consuls are unique in that they also have the power to raise and command Legions for Military operations. And while this could mean that Consuls were more powerful than the Senate, they needed to maintain favor with the Senate and therefore the people for their own future gains economically and politically. However, there are two means by which a Consul could wield absolute authority without the Senate.
One of these is if the Senate passed the “Senatus Consultum Ultimum,” or “The Final Act.” This act, by definition, empowers the consuls with unbridled authority, essentially making them above Roman Law. They could literally kill many Romans, and they wouldn’t feel the actual punishment for the crime… unless the punishment was no more political gains, which was definitely the consequence there. The Senate could also make a Roman Consul into a “Dictator.” We give that word some negative connotations now, but to the Roman’s, it was an honor to be named dictator. Again, unbridled authority, but this time it has a time limit (unless you’re Caesar 😂) of Six Months. 6. VI. After that, they must step down from Dictator. Both of these powers were only used in the most desperate of times, though, which was usually in wartime (again, unless you’re Caesar 😂).

In Caesar's case, he was captured by a tribe which was losing a war. In no time at all, he used his knowledge of history and technology to transform the tribe from a small, desperate group into a disciplined, drilled force that had grown by conquering the region it occupied. The man may not be a literal god to those closest to him but to those further down, he may as well be one.

Praetorians are actually not considered the toughest the legion has to offer. According to Chief Hanlon they are capable enough to qualify as a centurion as a rule but they are selected for due to their loyalty to Caesar, not explicitly because they are the best the legion has to offer in combat ability.

I love this, honestly wish they did more with the leagion, seems like they are hated by most companions, or don't have many fans.
Does some of the gameplay recorded have mods on for texture, and then doesn't?

They had plans for more legion content, more side quests, and civilian locations in the mojave, but they had to be cut for time

i love the theory of legate lanius being multiple people, so each time one dies a new legate becomes "lanius" and the monster of the east. it makes sense since the guy you meet in fnv doesn't seem as brutal and "veteran" as you'd expect someone who conquered entire states of the pre-war us.

lanius literally speaks of his conquests in denver, not to mention you dont find 7ft tall generals who are able to don heavy armor and cleave brahmin in half

The game treats Lanius as myth who is different from the actual person.

My main take-away is that the only reason the legion still exists at all is because of how insanely competent the frumentarii are. Without their intelligence gathering, planning and campaigns of terror the legion is essentially just a horde of half naked dumbasses charging into machinegun fire weilding big knives
