Wouldn't mind a broader look at the NCR's military. Really appreciate these looks at the factions' organizational structure; hope to see all of them covered in this manner someday.
Take the modern US military, disregard the navy, air force, marines, and space force (losers), dissolve the chiefs of staff, remove lieutenant and major generals from the rank structure, do the same with lieutenant colonels, combine first and second lieutenants (you can scream in terror now), remove the NCO equivalent to every commissioned officer past basic sergeant, and presume either specialists just aren't deployed to the mojave (doubtful) or the rank just doesn't exist and any PFC (assuming _they_ exist) is just autopromoted to corporal instead of it being a sergeant no one respects. NCR Rangers are sort of like Army Rangers or JSOC- they technically adhere to the same coc but tend to operate with looser regulations and rules of engagement. congratulations, you have the NCRA's rank structure.
In the real world it would go brigadier general (usually assists in running divisions) major general (usually in charge of divisions) lieutenant general (usually in charge of 3 divisions) and then the general, who's in charge of overseeing entire theaters. Given the size of the NCR army it's not unreasonable to think he's the only general of that high rank with a couple of LtGens and MajGens running things elsewhere. On the other hand it's not uncommon at all for militaries to appoint a general of generals. Pershing was granted the rank general of the armies, putting him as the #1 general in the nation shortly after WW1
Fresh face volunteer stepping out onto the Mojave: "I'm going to make a difference!" Ceasar's Legion, Powder Gangers, Fiends, Great Khans, The Kings, other horrors of the wasteland alongside the NCR's own bureaucracy: "No you ain't."
I think you're right. Sterling for example was discharged from the Rangers and reinstated into the NCR Army's 1st Recon unit, eventually making the rank of Corporal. Ironically, I think that would be like if someone got discharged from the real life USMC 1st Recon battallion and then went on to enlist in the United States Army.
I will say, Oliver does get a lot of flack, but his tactics do actually have some merit. Here’s why: For all of Ceasers talk of honor and the skill of his troops, the vast majority of his victories come from cunning, deception, and other non-direct methods (the burning of Nipton, the Irradiating of Camp Searchlight, the attack on Ranger Station Charlie, etc), while the NCR’s victories tend to come from direct, conventional battle (the capture of the Helios One, the extermination of the Kings, etc). Combined with the Rangers and Heavy Troopers, I think the NCR wins in a straight up fight. That’s why Oliver focuses on the Dam. That’s why he’s called ‘Wait and See’, because he knows that Ceaser is certainly going to try and take the Dam with everything he has. So why wouldn’t he throw everything into its defense? Especially if all the other resources he dedicates else where are pretty much useless if the Dam falls?
Lol what merit? There’s a reason why the NCR has more quests than the Legion. His “tactic” just leaves his army exposed to flanking and skirmishes which are highly effective by the way. Instead of sending Ranger out to do their job, he orders them to stay put. Nipton pays for it, Camp Searchlight pays for it, Camp Forlorn Hope pays for it, and most of all, his troops pays for it for the sake of him earning his place in the history book.
@@atpsoldat6108Your forgetting one major factor: Ceaser is just as blind as Oliver. This discussion would be different if, say, Ceaser was smart enough to invade from Cottonwood Cove and attack the Mojave Outpost, basically encircling the entire NCR Expeditionary Force. Instead, Ceaser has tunnel vision on the Dam, and Oliver knows this, hence why he throws everything he has on the Dam, because he knows that’s were the primary attack will come.
@@bigj1905 The game shows the opposite of what you're saying though. Caesar (and his frumentariies) does everything he can to weaken the NCR before the 2nd Battle of Hoover Dam. If Caesar was truly tunneled vision like you say, then he wouldn't be spreading his legionaries out over the wasteland to harass the NCR, make use of terror tactics, and demoralizing their enemies. Remember, Camp McCarran has a Legion spy in it, along with the many other frumentarii around the wasteland, feeding info to him. Caesar is not "blind" in anyway at all. Why the hell would Caesar order an attack at the Mojave Outpost? Rangers and troopers have orders to stand guard, his Legion have free reign to harass the NCR's supply line. Almost everyone sees Oliver as a fool, for good reason. Amassing troops at the dam is a good move IF there are foundations to support that move. Said foundations that are being broken down over the game by the Legion, other hostile factions, by Oliver himself. Remember, it was Hanlon who carried the NCR to victory in the first battle at the dam. What does Oliver do with this early victory against the Legion? Let the Veteran Rangers, the major badasses of the NCR, "chase ghosts in Baja", only calling them in at the very last seconds before the 2nd battle. For the rest of the rangers, he tells them to stay put when they could have been out there in the wasteland being, y'know, RANGERS. There's a reason why the NCR has the most quests out of all the major factions. They need a hero and Oliver is not that. TLDR: Caesar is not "blind" and Oliver does not deserve any military merits at all.
@@atpsoldat6108 But then why does Ceaser still attack the Dam?!?!? It’s the most heavily fortified position in the Mojave other than Vegas. Ceaser does make use of Frumentari extensively, but most of their attacks just don’t make sense. Taking out outpost Charlie hurts NCR Intel, but wouldn’t Echo be a better target, since it over looks Cottonwood Cove? Caesars main foothold across the Colorado? The irradiating of Camp Searchlight killed a good chunk of troops, but he then proceeds to absolutely squander that advantage and let’s the NCR regroup. The burning of Nipton was cruel and designed to install fear, but the town itself wasn’t important: it wasn’t a supply line or a NCR Stronghold. Taking out the train at Camp McCaren was also a complete waste of a spy. Wouldn’t it have been better to assassinate Hsu? Considered by most to be one of the best commanders the NCR has? No, Ceasers raids usually don’t make sense, and serve only to pester the NCR, rather than outright threaten it. The only one that has some merit is equipping the Omertàs and Fiends to attack The Strip and McCaren.
I love these videos a lot, i come to understand the NCR a whole lot more. Especially how Hanlon had so much say in the hierarchy. How about making a BoS hierarchy next?
Would definitely love to see more videos about the structure of the NCR in general 👀 Not enough people make videos about the new vegas factions like this, keep it up 🙏
i dislike colonel moore but only because she hates the idea of accepting the brotherhood of steel helping them in the final battle of hoover dam. picking this choice makes you lose NCR reputation (though not enough to move you down a rep tier) which means that she would rather have there be a lower chance of winning against the legion rather than saving extra lives and making a strong truce.

I'm working from memory, but weren't the Desert Rangers of the Mojave and the NCR Rangers separate forces? I thought their unification was what the statue at the Outpost was meant to celebrate. Something that has nagged at me is the NCR strategy of conscription and very short training times for basic soldiers. According to the official strategy guide, the NCR has a population of just shy of a million. Losing 1000 soldiers a year would represent a significant loss to the culture and I don't think a society that small could not sustain such human wave tactics for very long, especially if the society is attempting to emulate the pre-War USA. I imagine inquiries would be held, blame would be apportioned and maybe a senior officer or even the president would be forced to resign. Still, I love this sort of deep dive into fictional worlds. It gets the creative juices flowing (ooh er!).
I think the human wave method could continue to work for them so long as they don’t fight a group with an equally large military population. That’s probably why they could mostly defeat the brotherhood but struggle with the legion.
I didn’t think about it until now but it seems crazy to me that the Air Corps is not a bigger part of the NCR military. Of course, all we see in the base game is in the Vertibird charged with transporting Kimball. But if you nuke the Long 15 you see evidence of Vertibirds in NCR possession. Seems like they would be a massive advantage over the relatively under-armed Legion

It seems that the ncr only needs one general, as all of their other force concentrations are a brigade size at best, while colonels make up most officers as much of the ncr’s forces are individual battalions, not the large multi brigade forces like in the Mojave, meaning that they likely can have more generals they just don’t as they don’t need them. The army of the ncr seems to be more a Victorian style frontier force of many small units rather than world war style blocks of huge numbers of men, as the ncr army is only numbering in the tens of thousands meaning they don’t need as many high ranking officers as there simply isn’t that many men to command, being the whole ncr’s pop is about a million tops if I recall correctly.
Great Video !! Although I would have liked to know more about the Rangers , As it was a little brief explanation. Like the differences from Ranger Com. Officers , Ranger Patrols, & the main ones in charge in there Ranger camps. Also wanted to know where the Military Police (MP) troops stand , If they are just like privates or if they are a bit higher. Overall , Video was great !! Thank you for the time & effort you put into these videos, I know they aren’t simple to make.
I like to think General Oliver as one of those Generals with political connections. As we know Oliver and Kimball are friends. As President Kimball can promote anyone he wants to the rank as he wishes. It just happened to be Oliver.
Personally I thought there are multiple generals the reason I only hear about one is that a general would probably come in the theater if it’s like the American military where they command a whole chunk of area and therefore a general Shirley command on one chunk but since Josi so little of the game world that general would be in charge of the let’s say the whole Mojave region I don’t know it’s just my thought also I would Strasmore the first and second ranks and all those things because those things matter and Irl military they probably matter there to sign thousand good video
The NCR Ranking system seems a bit confusing compared to Cesar's Legion. Maybe that's just me. Usually a fictional military has a very clearly defined role and structure.
I think the NCR Army's organizational structure is more streamlined than the military ranking system of Caesar's Legion. The Legion has a lot of specialty positions, like cursor, houndmaster, blacksmith, scout, and many others, that are hard to pinpoint where exactly they belong in the hierarchy. (Yaboiii made a video about it, actually.) The NCR Army, however, seems straightforward.
I mean they're both fundamentally based off the same source: the roman army. The ncr army is based off the American army whose structure is fundamentally similar to the roman army, just with different names, and more ranks to reflect the different size of the armies.
More of that would be awesome. Especially regarding the airforce. I know they had some vertibirds but there must be more aircraft since if there only were vertibirds they would have Not created an independent airforce and instead integrated them as a Part of the army like many countries had in ww1 were aircraft were only in Support roles for ground troops.
hey, i've seen this mod called dust, and to me it was like Murphy's law working overtime. i want you talk about what if everything within the fallout universe (reasonably) went wrong.
OIkay can we talk about how General Oliver might actually be a tactical genius Like there's no way he or anyone else in the NCR could have foreseen the Legion magically discovering a back door inside the Dam But if we take a look at the Fort we find the Legion is preparing to bomb the shit out of the NCR's sniper positions... If Oliver followed Hanlon's advice the Rangers would have been shelled to death instantly. At least inside the dam they have a fighting chance. Imagine the Legion trying to sneak through whatever drainage pipe they found a way into, only to get gun downed by automatic gun fire. It would turn those passages into charnal pits.
You can't help but admire the tenacity of the rangers. They're the embodiment of that old world American frontiersman, pulling all their skill and culture as far back as the first continental army. It really sells the idea that these are men that would fight to survive the Mojave, disaster or not.
I’d personally be very intrested to learn about their other branches and divisions. Even if speculative. I’d personally like to think the NCR Air Force has not just vertibirds but maybe even some fighter craft. Perhaps a small navy or coast guard-
Now that you put the idea in my head, the NCR army does seem to have a similar color scheme as the Cadian regiment. Hell, their service rifles seem to be about as effective as the common lasgun.
brigadier general is a one star and the ncr army general is four stars(as shown in-game)not five however in the real us army the roles of four and five stars are similar though.
So what if the Courier is actually an ex NCR soldier so if Kimball is retirement and the Courier won second war of Hoover Dam and become the President.
17:43 Nope, even PDFs, let alone Guardsmen, have better training and equipment (motivation too) than NCRA conscripts. Fallout's 23rd century Mojave would be a literal sanatorium resort (a regular desert with only a tiny bit of radiation? pff.) for a typical Guardsman Regiment, they face worse than even Cazadores and Deathclaws on a regular occurrence after all. Don't even get me started comparing Chaos Cultists and a bunch of LARPers... P.S. Guardsmen also have tanks and artillery that NCRA could only dream of... while lacking in real plasma weapons and power armor (if my 40K lore is correct)
hey just a head up you got you a bit of the info wrong about the military ranks the rank of general is 4 stars the rank of brigadier general is 1 star not 2 stars that would be a major general the real ranks would be as follows POTNCR (civilian position active military can not hold it) general of the army 5 stars (would be in command of there original branch and all other branches) general 4 starts lieutenant general 3stars major general 2 stars brigadier general 1 star
I'd say NCR privates are more akin to PDF than imperial guard, at least the guard gets laser guns, the pdf are sometimes given equipment so primitive it dates back to world war 2
15:50 This part I’m required to dismiss Whether the 2 weeks is cannon by Obsidian standards or not doesn’t matter It’s completely absurd, you could barely equip these conscripts in that time God forbid teach anything And it’s very obvious the NCR do more than you could possibly fit in 2 weeks I’d say they have a minimum of 4-6 weeks based on the bare basics of basic trainings the NCR offer Keep in mind this is not only objectively more practical, it’s more adhering to real US conscription full burn shortened training periods
Cut content their was supposed to be an NCR ranger super mutant an City of Jake town Vault 24: Super mutants with vault jumpsuits Super mutants where supposed to be on Hoover dam.
Oliver isn't on the frontlines, also the Hoover dam is valuable for power. Oliver is probably a 5-star general but there are likely others. I don't know where you are getting the General being the second most important, there are other politicians outside of the president and maybe they even have a Secretary for Defense, Army, Navy, and Air force.
@@hunterkage2842 what do you call hoover dam if not the front lines? He can be killed in the second battle of hoover dam. You can't kill a general who isn't on the front line. If the general is the one in charge of the army, then everyone else in the state exists at his pleasure.
@@mappingshaman5280 the front lines are the first area of defense, Oliver is close to the front lines. You say army but army doesn't mean military. Military is a word used to refer to the entire Armed Forces, while the word Army is only a subset and one of the many branches making up the military. More specifically, it is the land service division of the military. Although the words are sometimes used interchangeably, they are not the same. Oliver probably isn't the only general and the reason he's likely that close to the front lines is technology limits, so he can have a more hands on command and simply his being full of himself. A secretary out ranks a general so the secretary of defense and such are higher rank.
@@hunterkage2842 look just because he's not manning the sandbags, doesn't mean he isn't on the frontline. In fallout it practically does since the navies and air force have practically been destroyed. I mean the NCR simps for the boomers whom can get ONE world war two B 29 bomber. I think that displays the state of their air force perfectly well. Agreed that he probably isn't the only general, thats my point, that you don't put the man in charge of your whole army where he can easily be killed. I doubt uts technology considering the NCR has radio. And yes theoretically they outrank a general, but they don't have soldiers sworn to them, so they aren't as important as the man who controls the whole military in my book. If Oliver was the only general, and he decided that the legion has a point, the NCR would be destroyed overnight. If the secretary of state did the same, Oliver would send in some soldiers and shoot him.

Personally I thought there are multiple generals the reason I only hear about one is that a general would probably come in the theater if it’s like the American military where they command a whole chunk of area and therefore a general Shirley command on one chunk but since Josi so little of the game world that general would be in charge of the let’s say the whole Mojave region I don’t know it’s just my thought also I would Strasmore the first and second ranks and all those things because those things matter and Irl military they probably matter there to sign thousand good video
in my opinion yaboii and omega initiative are the best fallout content creators

There were some good ones.

The NCR Ranking system seems a bit confusing compared to Cesar's Legion.
Maybe that's just me.
Usually a fictional military has a very clearly defined role and structure.
Usually military has a huge bureaucracy so Caesar troops are somewhat unusual and streamlined, highly ideological system of units.
@@FlymanMS ture but I was thinking in fictional terms.
No normie cares about real life military logistics.
Well, the NCR *are* essentially based off of the US Government of the old world
I think the NCR Army's organizational structure is more streamlined than the military ranking system of Caesar's Legion.
I love the 40k reference at the end, and it's very fitting for the role of the privates and imperial guard
Ironic since the imperial guard are closer in attitude to caesar legion.
I want to see a video explaining the NCR political hierarchy
hey, i've seen this mod called dust, and to me it was like Murphy's law working overtime.
i want you talk about what if everything within the fallout universe (reasonably) went wrong.
Oh lord what has this mod done to Moore
she looks like veronica lol
That’s a good one, my nightly bloodlust has been satisfied
OIkay can we talk about how General Oliver might actually be a tactical genius
Like there's no way he or anyone else in the NCR could have foreseen the Legion magically discovering a back door inside the Dam
But if we take a look at the Fort we find the Legion is preparing to bomb the shit out of the NCR's sniper positions...
The howitzers only work with courier intervention however
You can't help but admire the tenacity of the rangers. They're the embodiment of that old world American frontiersman, pulling all their skill and culture as far back as the first continental army. It really sells the idea that these are men that would fight to survive the Mojave, disaster or not.
Surprised major Dhatri wasn't mentioned
I was just wondering about that too
I would love any of those topics and could you do a break down of the railroads chain of command
id def be interested in a video covering the ncr's other divisions
That's what my tailor told me, always support those privates
I’d personally be very intrested to learn about their other branches and divisions. Even if speculative. I’d personally like to think the NCR Air Force has not just vertibirds but maybe even some fighter craft. Perhaps a small navy or coast guard-
Hey great video. Could you do one for the legion if you haven’t already. Take care and keep up the great work. Peace. ✌🏻
Fantastic watch!
4:46 Brigadier General is a one-star general irl
NCR Air Force video would be awesome
So true, because the ncr airforce exist......but is not mentioned in the game
I'd love to see a bolt action or Warhammer style table top game based on the Mojave campaign
Shoutout to Sean Ranklin
amazing video
Kimball virtabird goes boom
Ave, true to Caesar
Ave, true to Caesar
Eh, I prefer making his head go boom
I still wonder how Moore got her position
Now that you put the idea in my head, the NCR army does seem to have a similar color scheme as the Cadian regiment. Hell, their service rifles seem to be about as effective as the common lasgun.
brigadier general is a one star and the ncr army general is four stars(as shown in-game)not five however in the real us army the roles of four and five stars are similar though.
2:26 Ceasar to Kimball: Im you, but better.
Brigadier General is actually a one star General in the US army
you should do the brotherhood of steel next.
I wonder how much better they’d stop the legion if they actually trained their troops
If you can it would be cool if you would covee ranks of the Enclave or even the Brotherhood of steel
A brigadier general is a one star general I do not know the rest of the general ranking under the 5 star
taxes? *W H A T*
What's the soundtrack strating at 2:57? I can't find it in Fallout 4, and I don't recall it from New Vegas.
So what if the Courier is actually an ex NCR soldier so if Kimball is retirement and the Courier won second war of Hoover Dam and become the President.
You literally forgot to mention the Desert Rangers who are not the same as the NCR Rangers
"only in death the duty ends"
I've said it before, I'll say it again, someone really missed a trick when writing FNV to not just call the NCR military the NCarmy.
There's also brig Gen in cut content
hey just a head up you got you a bit of the info wrong about the military ranks
the rank of general is 4 stars
the rank of brigadier general is 1 star not 2 stars that would be a major general the real ranks would be as follows
POTNCR (civilian position active military can not hold it)
general of the army 5 stars (would be in command of there original branch and all other branches)
general 4 starts
lieutenant general 3stars
major general 2 stars
brigadier general 1 star
And of course, above all else, the player character, who wields the power of God.
brigadier general and 2 star general are literally the same rank
now do the minutemen
I think a look at the NCR's air and mechanized forces, at least, would be interesting.
I'd say NCR privates are more akin to PDF than imperial guard, at least the guard gets laser guns, the pdf are sometimes given equipment so primitive it dates back to world war 2
Enclave here wtf guys
Who?
Super, Mutant, Ranger?!
BoS: blasphemy!!!
The NCR lost my support when i found mercenaries harassing Jacobstown…
15:50 This part I’m required to dismiss
Whether the 2 weeks is cannon by Obsidian standards or not doesn’t matter
It’s completely absurd, you could barely equip these conscripts in that time
God forbid teach anything
And it’s very obvious the NCR do more than you could possibly fit in 2 weeks
I’d say they have a minimum of 4-6 weeks based on the bare basics of basic trainings the NCR offer
Keep in mind this is not only objectively more practical, it’s more adhering to real US conscription full burn shortened training periods
Now they are just raiders
NCR for life
Still don't get the lieutenant leftenant joke...
the rangers are basically the marines in the US military structure? that's my best guess, and hanlon is just high ranking/ general of the rangers
More like navy seals
Not really, US marines are just soldiers with some water training
12:25 Didn't Sawjer said that women are (A bit unrealistically) 50% of their military?
For the republic ! 9:52 also us Brits don’t say it like that we say it like luten-et
The military do use leftenent pronunciation
Where the analysis of the hierarchy of mr. Houses robot army.

Hello there

Vault 24: Super mutants with vault jumpsuits
Super mutants where supposed to be on Hoover dam.
Not sure why everypne looks old af in some scenes. Like in 2:16.
"in the world" - that we know so far
Hopefully one day we see another country =)
I don't think general Oliver is the only general in the ncr army. I doubt they'd put the second most important man in the NCR on the front lines.
They put their own president on the frontlines and he dies without player intervention
HAHAHA.
More NCR More NCR. More NCR.
Love the ncr.
Where my tax money going?
They are not fixing the roads or doing anything about the raider problem!

NCR and Minutemen for life.
Plus, would would you rather live under the Legion Enclave or Bos.
