Collective Soul is a criminally underrated band. They have so many great songs to check out like Gel, Shine, December and one of my personal favorites Georgia Girl.
I’ve always felt this too, many people put them in the mediocre alt rock category along with bands like Candlebox and live, both bands I love also, but I’ve always loved them!

This song is relatable because we as human beings need something to either live for or be apart of something bigger than ourselves. This song will never go out of style because all of us suffer at some point in our lives. Whether it be from depression,loss of life,birth...... the list goes on. Ed Roland is a musical genius who's written and arranged dozens of just incredible songs. The entire band is just incredibly talented. You all need to check them out. It's sad that more people don't appreciate his genius.

When I first heard this song I liked the sound of it. When I first read the lyrics I understood the message a little more. When I first saw the video, and put all 3 together, I cried. My dad died from suicide. It haunts me every day that there's something I could have said, something I could have done. One simple act, a smile or a "hey how are you?" could have been enough to make a difference. Be kind to one another... and never forget to tell those that you love how much they mean to you.

In a particularly dark period, I lost several friends, a partner, a grandmother and an uncle in the course of just a few months. When my mind didn't stop shouting, I would lose myself in music, as I had done most of my life. I remember going for a late night drive when I heard this song for the first time. I didn't catch all the meaning at the time, but the tune hooked me and I bought the album. After listening to it and coming to know it, it has since become a reminder of those times. Yes, the loss, but also the survival, and how things are always dependent on perspective, which is one thing we can always change.
Collective soul was the band I heavenly listened to back in the 90s, from moving from one state to another starting all over in school, making new friends, being an outsider most of my middle and high school days, I felt like no one cares- but collective soul song and how they wrote those lyrics to this song and Shine, better now, December and many more. I still listen to them today and watch them live in concert every chance I get when they come to Florida. Collective soul is an band that will forever be know as great artist and there songs move people in a way that no matter how hard life may seem; there is always going to be better days ahead. It’s such a deep, beautiful song. The strings, the killer bass, the drums that do just enough without drawing your attention away from the melody, Ed Roland’s powerful lyrics and vocals, and this incredible video that RUclips has stupidly put a warning on. This song, and this video, saved lives. When the dove lands on the guy’s arm and all the color comes back into the city, you see hope. When the guy notices the people on the street are scurrying just like the ants on the ledge, you see that we take everything too seriously. This is a work of art by a great band.
Growing in Los Angeles and now in Phoenix, this song still hit close to home. I visited skid row with my aunt in Los Angeles and there are still cardboard condos and tire couches. Driving into work in downtown Phoenix, I pass a small community of homeless people who are lost or trying to get back into society. I’m ashamed to say, I’ve become jaded to all this and looked down on them; forgetting when I was younger, I was very close to being there if it wasn’t for family. So, yes to answer his question at the 3:30 mark, this song relates more than ever. Especially with this pandemic and shutdowns. It still holds the same message.

Then I bought the album and listened, actually listened, to this song. It helped clear some bad thoughts and emotions. A lot of different music, and my dog, have saved my life many times. Collective Soul- Gel is my favorite song from them.

I’ve loved this band for so long, they really get no love but their songs are very deep and beautiful, his voice is so pretty and his lyrics are amazing, this particular song has always seemed to me to be a song about how there’s always light in the darkness and if you look hard enough you can still find the beauty in this world. Beautiful, almost tragic, dramatic song. I recall being at work in our office (shared with another salesman), around 1996. I never thought much about it just hearing it on our radio. Just thought of the sad vibe. Now that there is this video with the man contemplating suicide and finding redemption in simple things, it suddenly becomes an awesome song of hope and salvation.

My own experience with this song...by the time this one came out, I knew it well because I’d had the album for months and was a big fan of the band. I even went to see them live. I’d say I was around 20, maybe a tad older. Anyway, this song always felt like a bummer to me, like one that brought you down, so I didn’t listen to it as much and would skip over it. Fast forward about 30 years to now, where I hear it on the intercom at work at least once a week. It used to give me a nostalgic feeling to my youth. Then the pandemic hit and life changed for everyone, and I was feeling like the guy in this video. Like it was never going to get better. That was when I finally really understood the point of the song, that life is absolutely crazy and horrible things happen, but there are always things of beauty to see and life to appreciate. It’s “the world I know.” That line hits me hard “So I laugh to myself as the tears roll down.” Such a deep message.
So, I have to tell my personal story. I was born in 1999, a few years after this song came out. I had no clue who Collective Soul was my whole life. I discovered this band in 2019 when I was going through a depressive episode being bipolar. In July of 2019, I tried to take my own life and the police rushed to my house at 4am. They threatened to take me to the mental hospital. I had already been to one a year prior and I felt as if I was slipping again. All of a sudden, THIS song came to my mind. I remembered the music video and the voice of Ed Roland. I barely knew this band, but I took it as a sign. A sign to live and start over again. I was able to convice the police that I would be okay. It's March 2021 and I haven't been suicidal since. Collective Soul is now my favorite band and my first tattoo became their logo. Next week, I fly down to Atlanta to see them live 3x in the front row (yes, during the pandemic). My dream is to tell Collective Soul how they changed my life and how healthy and happy I feel again. Most sincerely- I feel better now than I did as a kid. I love living and this band taught me those simple joys. Thank you Collective Soul. Please, whether you are young like me, older, or no matter who you are, you have got to check out Collective Soul. They might not change your life as dramatically as mine, but they will be one of the best voices of hope you'll ever feel in your life.

I was 3 when I first heard this. I didn’t understand the lyrics but the music sounded urgent and important so THAT stuck with me. Luckily it was a really popular song you still hear all over the radio even today, so once I understood the lyrics, I understood how important the messaging was and then THAT part stuck with me.
I remember the song from the 90s. I found it sad, though I couldn't make out all the words. Things hit me differently then -- I felt more angst about everything, which is probably developmentally normal for my age then, 20s -- but I understand it more fully now as I have lived through the suicide of a few loved ones since then. I am also a counselor, (I entered the field in my 30s so I wasn't in the field back then) and I know and understand things now that I would not have then.

It's been a long time since I've heard this song. It hits SO differently for me now. Part of it is societal changes (especially the pre/post 9/11 shift), but part of it is that our view of the world changes with age and experience.
Collective Soul's "The World I Know" is on my list of songs & music-videos that I have to emotionally prepare myself to listen to and or watch, I always break down tho, pacing with the ugly face, unable to sing-a-long anymore from crying due to 4:43 - 6:26....
