Totally agree. 90s were so deep. I think of bands like the Goo Goo Dolls, Third Eye Blind, REM, Oasis, and Collective Soul, and songs like Name, Iris, Black Balloon, Wonderwall, Losing My Religion, How's it Gonna Be, Motorcycle Driveby, and this one. 90s were the best time in music in my view.

Hey, I'm 24, I was born in 1999 and Collective Soul is my favorite band because they saved my life with this song. The police came over one night to take me to the hospital, but I remember hearing this song I and I told them I would be okay. Ever since that day in 2019, I've seen the band 15 times and met them even more times, I have a CS group I run and I do anything and everything to promote this extremely underrated band. I would suggest for you to listen to their song, "Right As Rain". It's newer, from 2019 but you will hear the 90s still in them, and the same sweet vocals from singer Ed Roland. Ed is my friend now and I can speak highly of any of this songs, but "Right As Rain" has been my theme song. Check it out

To me, the '90s can be summed up with the name of a particular album by the smashing pumpkins. Melancholy and the infinite sadness. That name encapsulates the '90s. I'm a GenX person myself Who grew up in that time. I remember thinking about the fact that we are the children of the baby boomers. The ones who protested and fought for civil rights, against endless Wars, were shot at Kent State and attacked by the establishment for wanting equality, were all about peace and love and living together with your fellow human beings. There was so much hope going into the '90s for our generation. However, throughout the whole era it seemed like we just failed to accomplish anything transformative. Nothing got better for anybody, even though we thought we tried. So to me, that's why I see melancholy and the infinite sadness as a pretty descriptive name for that decade. But that's just my opinion.

Wonderful request Kelly. I ❤️ love Collective Soul. Shine. December. RUN. Better Now, Heavy, NEEDS, Counting the Days. I've seen their concerts quite a few times. My most prize possession is my picture with Ed's arm around my shoulder at our meet and greet. Ed's ( and his brothers ) dad is a minister.

When you said the 90's (music) was intimate, exactly! Immediately Cheryl Crow's "If God Was One Of Us" came to mind of a perfect example of how intimate 90's/90's alternative could feel.

I LOVE Collective Soul. And yes, there is a lot of grungy angst-ridden alternative music in the 1990s -- and the bands you mentioned are all ones I like and listened to at the time too. Check out their other big hits from the mid-1990s such as "Run", "December" and "Shine".

Songs nowadays are more self centered. Personal relationships/experiences, not much about society in general. I’m a big fan of Faouzia now, but as amazingly as she sings, she just sings about herself and her experiences. Admittedly we can identify with what she is saying, and it helps. But I can’t help thinking we need to get at the root of our problems.
That moment when the pigeon lands on his arm and all of a sudden life turns into color, masterful. We talk about existential indifference, but what about existential hope? Anything is possible.

This song is beautiful! You know, my favourite band is Roxette (a 90s group as well) but Collective Soul are just as good producing singable choruses. And they are masters of hook guitar riffs! “Precious Declarations”, “Gel”, “Shine”… some of my favourite guitar riffs ever!

The 90's were pretty bleak, we came out of the optimistic 80's, straight into recession and a realistic, slap in the face, the music reflected that feeling everyone had of uncertainty and worry. Great band, great song, great reaction and analysis. ❤

uhhh....ratrace = A rat race is an endless, self-defeating, or pointless pursuit. The phrase equates humans to rats attempting to earn a reward such as cheese, in vain. It may also refer to a competitive struggle to get ahead financially or routinely.
