- This band’s heavy Debut single was one of the biggest rock hits of the year but critics wrote them off as a Grunge also ran. Collective Soul hit #1 on the Rock charts with Shine. Critics were dead wrong. It was a huge mistake on their part since Ed Roland and Collective Soul weren’t of that caliber just in the same time frame.. Their second album 90s classic December blew the sophomore jinx out of the water with several #1 hits including today’s feature. The World I Know Ed Roland walked out of his hotel room in New York City and just moved around the skyscrapers by foot observing the grittiness and the turmoil of the people in this metropolis inspiring him to write this #1 smash. Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls borrowed from it considerably and in my interview with Ed he has the perfect comeback. Also with their other #1 Rock hit, the rest of the band called the song the worst shit ever and didn’t want to record the song. Ed told them to forget it…THEY WERE RECORDING IT.. he was right.. It was one of their biggest this.

Its time for another episode from our series revelations where artists take us for a deep dive into their greatest songs and albums with commentary and insight you won’t find anywhere else. Ya know.
In the early 90s, bands like Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains swooped in like tsunami and wiping everything out for a time. Radio changed along with it. from 1991 into 1993 this rock music was a completely refreshing sound.
But as we entered into the mid 90s things were continuing to escalate … and a second wave of bands entered the picture adding some gasoline to the the flame of rock s Hip Hop and Teen Pop threatened a total take over of radio as we have today. Pretty much Rock’s last stand on pop radio… One of the bands that made a place on pop radio to keep rock’s flag waving was Collective Soul. They would end up having 7 #1 hits on the rock charts and 2 #2 hits. Starting with their 94 smash Shine.
Critics wrote them off as a Grunge also rans after their first album Hints, allegations and things left unsaid went double platinum. But how wrong they were. Their very next album would blow the sophomore jinx out of the water selling over 3 minion copies in the US with 3 #1 rock hit in a row. December, Where the River Flows and today’s featured hit The world I know. Lead singer and main songwriter Ed Roland really considers Their second album Collective Soul to be their debut album. After the out of the blue success of the song shine which was really a demo recording, Ed and the band wanted to remix the songs for the Hints album for a higher quality re release but they were told that doing this would take too much time and mess up their momentum.

You're a gifted interviewer. Ed started off seemingly quite guarded and disinterested but your genuineness and kindness won him over.
The downside to the continual slide of media into a cesspit. Mainstream media is all lies and misdirection based on political ideology. The new media is a lot of unqualified people who may or may not care about the topic, they just want views. You can tell when the person interviewing you has an agenda or even a basic knowledge of the topic at hand.

All Killer, No Filler!
Love Collective Soul and Ed Roland. My junior year of HS was when Shine broke big across rock radio. I remember hearing it numerous times as my Mom and I drove from Atlanta to Savannah for my first trip to the beach. Such an amazing album. The follow-up was even better. loves Gel, man that song had a helluva hook.
Collective Soul is so good. And mad respect for them. They played a New Year's Eve show in my city of Saskatoon. The city was hit with a brutal blizzard, and their flight was cancelled, so the band found a charter pilot willing to take the flight. They showed up late, but still made it, and put on one hell of a show. They could have cancelled, and the fans would have understood, but they braved a Saskatchewan blizzard, and blew the fans away.
Collective soul is one of the few groups that I can say that so many of their album tracks could’ve easily been Singles. They know how to create pop melodies and hooks and catchy songs that sustain the album all the way through. They make complete statements and not a single surrounded by garbage. They are among the best bands of the 1990s
They really are masters of their craft.
A lot of the glam metal diehards make fun of us for liking Collective Soul - but they clearly don't know CS's roots.
Honestly, dude... CS is better at writing songs than even Nickleback. Say what you want about NB, but they know how to write a song. CS is 1000x better. Disciplined breakdown and Dosage are basically filled with songs that should have been singles. Not a bad song on em. My apologies... I've recently revisited CS as a matured musician/listener and I'm absolutely blown away right now lmao

Thank you POR!!!! I’ve been claiming for years Collective Soul is the most underrated 90s band. On satellite radio they play just three of their tracks. They have so many that everyone forgot about. Every time I bring this to someone’s attention I get the same reaction. “Wow, I forgot that song. And I had no idea that was Collective Soul”. I’m a one-man crusader to bring this band back! 😂
They need to play some hidden gems from them!

I was fortunate to see them live back in 95 at a small venue in South Florida. I had backstage access to a lot of shows as my cousin worked for a local radio station and sneaked me in as a sound engineer. While I saw many wild and sometimes scary backstage happenings, what struck me about Collective Soul is they were drinking water, eating healthy, and actually talking to their fans about their music. You got the sense that they are serious musicians that enjoy there craft. Shane Evens talked to me about playing the timbales. I still have the signed CD cover. Great memories. Collective Soul...to me...is the most underrated in the history of rock music. Before some of you laugh at that I challenge you to go back and listen to their library of work. They have so much great stuff that for some...is undiscovered. So many people know just their amazing hits but to actually delve deeper into this band you really begin to appreciate the TRUE GENIUS that Ed Roland really is. They also put on one hell of a concert. Ive seen them roughly 10 times and every show is a great night of recognizable, fun rock music. Ed's lyrical talent goes without saying...they have so many catchy songs that also go without saying and its ridiculous how robbed this band is and continues to be having the great hits library and the aforementioned amazing music library period. Simply put ... I LOVE THIS BAND and even though Collective Soul will NEVER get the credit that they deserve not only for the 90's time period but ALWAYS...I appreciate the talent, the lyrics and the desire to still bring out incredible rock music even after all this time. ALL HAIL TO THE SOUL MACHINE!!!
I worked at a chain music store in the mid 90's. The amount of stuff that was dumped on my ears was overwhelming. Collective Soul was a stand out.

Collective Soul and Live are the two bands I can play every song on every album on repeat and not get tired of it.
You don't always get the chance to see bands live, but I did have the pleasure of seeing Collective Soul at a live performance at a smaller venue that made the experience very intimate and got to really feel the energy of the band up-close. I am grateful that I had that one chance to enjoy a band with deeply moving music.

Being in a band in the late 80’s early 90’s writing music was some of the best times of my life. There are tons of great music that is written by musicians in towns and basements that never got the backing or platform to be heard by the masses and that’s ok, the people who wrote and played it got to experience it’s magic and know how good it was.

Collective Soul hit at a time in my life where I was spiraling. I could hear the spirituality in Shine and ran from it..
I was in a cover band and really didn't want to play it..
Heavy was the song that did it for me... I knew I was the weight in the song, not anyone else..
Took a few years more of really spiraling to get to the point where I knew there was more to life than me..
Shine holds a special spot now.. it is proof to me that people can change... not in the actual lyrics.. just my own attitude toward the lyrics !!
This song kept me going through a rough patch in my life - I fell in love with the band the first time I heard Shine, and I'm still "collecting" every album they make - love you guys!!

I can understand Ed’s sharp tone regarding Ross Childress, Childress had an affair with Ed Roland’s wife while on tour hence his departure from CS.
I stood a few feet away from them playing on stage on a base with my first born riding my shoulders. It was clear they enjoyed playing their songs for people and it was clear everyone in the audience enjoyed listening. It was a free concert too. So you can imagine the vibe

Great interview. I lived through that time in full stereo. They were obviously good at what they did. I think Nirvana had everyone so cynical that positivity was looked at with suspicion. In fact, these guys were some of the best of the decade. You really humanized them for me. Ed Roland seems like a nice guy and he can obviously write. Great job.

I bought the "dosage" album as a 15 year old on a whim for my birthday, went home and listened to it for the next year on repeat, only interrupted by their self titled album I discovered after. So many fantastic, melodic hits.
I always enjoy Collective Soul, but when the song Run came out, I really fell in love with the music. They have many great songs, but Run is at the top of the list for me. It's a perfect song

Loved his honesty, it was quite refreshing. He appears to have good morals and was brought up right. His story involving Elliot Easton of the Cars, was really heart-warming. That response Elliot had is how it should be. As far as another song to cover by them, I have always liked "Where the River Flows."

Collective Soul is absolutely one of the very best from that time, and the music still holds up to this very day. There's a ton of other bands from then who were super popular, but you hear nothing about today.
The World I Know was and is my favorite song! Here in Canada we had "Much Music" and I would keep that channel on to make sure I never missed the chance to hear and watch the music video!. Loved watching this video, Adam!

This is why I love this channel. With another great interview, you made me interested in hearing about a band I am not a fan of and songs I do not particularly like. Ed Roland seems like an interesting character.
Love Collective Soul. Covered "Shine", "Where the river flows" and "Goodnight, good guy" in several of my bands over the years. The songs still get a great reaction from the audience and they are fun to play.
I remember being blown away one night seeing Dolly Parton on The Letterman Show one night, she played a version of “Shine” with a bluegrass band! I gained much respect for both artists that night!
Judging by her video for that I think it was Nickel Creek, a great band in their own right.

I'm 66 years old and I love grunge! To me it's the closest thing to 60's and 70's rock that I grew up with, but more evolved. Collective Soul in my opinion, is very underrated. I love everything they did. Something about their sound that I just can't resist.

My dad and I loved Collective Soul when I was in high school! He was excited to hear a Southern rock band get big in the 90s. We were both hooked from the time Shine got big, but The World I Know was always my favorite. The strings really elevated that song, as well as the subject matter. It also reminded me of the song Counting Blue Cars but I hear the comparison to Iris. Thank you for reminding me of this beautiful gem of a song and a happy part of my childhood today, Professor 🙏

Collective Soul……one of our favorite bands ever and we LOVE to see them live. My family of 8 is aged 62-21 and we all love their songs, high energy and honest appreciation of their fans.

Although I was familiar with some of Collective Soul‘s songs throughout the 90s, I was actually turned onto their music in the mid-2000s by a friend who had all of their albums up to that point. I was blown away by how good the songs were on all of those albums and still enjoy listening to them to this day.

This was the song to me that finally put some deep emotion into grunge type of music. The chorus almost had a Pink Floyd feel too it. I had to buy the album after listening to it.... I never realized the similarities between this and the Goo Goo Dolls song!

I think another Group that was later influenced by this music may have been Third Eye Blind with Jumper. Their chorus reminds me of the raw emotion found in many of Collective Soul’s songs.

Surprised that Ed didn't name "Breathe" as one of the songs from the debut album that would have made it to an album if they would have been able to rerecord. Good song. Made it to #12 on the rock charts. "The World I Know" is my favorite Collective Soul song. Great interview.

A memory I will always carry about Collective Soul is that my father loved "Shine." He was of the Elvis, Roy Orbison, Everly Brothers genre, so when the old man liked a rocker, I was surprised, but he wound up really liking the second album. By the time their self-titled album was released, I was working at an AOR station and I swear we played every song from the album, and I typically played at least three in any given six hour shift. I had the chance to see them play at a local college in 1995 in support of that album, and they put on a helluva show. Great interview as always.
My first impression of Collective Soul and their debut single "Shine" was that they were sort of a kinder, gentler grunge band. But then, I saw Collective Soul open for Van Halen on the Balance Tour, and I was blown away. I got to see them multiple times during the 90's, and this band was much more ferocious live than on record. They even regularly played Ozzy's "Crazy Train" during live sets and would nail it. It's almost a shame they didn't capture that live concert energy on their records.

My favorite Collective Soul song is “Needs”. Their Dosage album is fantastic from beginning to end and I would live to see a video that analyzes it.
Ed’s songs have always been fantastic companions of mine as I travel and find myself with extra time to think because he does such a wonderful job of asking questions without having to force a way of thinking on the listener, everything is open to interpretation and that is how art should be.
Professor, you hit on a band that is very special to me. I was so lucky to find them in 1995 amongst the weeds and loved the combination of alternative with a hard rock guitar. I moved to Atlanta in January of 1996 and they are my hometown band for 26 years. I have now seen them more than any other band in my lifetime (they passed RUSH, UFO and Iron Maiden). I have this particular song as a shirt from their merch store. There is such spirituality and movement in this song. Ed Roland is a genius, incredible live band, and they are STILL putting out great music. I feel they may be one of the most underrated bands of all-time.

I have to tell you PoR that I just love listening to these videos, esp the "Revelations", as I go on my walks around the neighborhood. As a musician, I am often looking for song ideas, and these videos are priceless. I listen to songs I'm working on and then to these. For instance in your video about "Every breath you take" you went over out the guitar part happened, such a cool story. I thought...I should add a similar guitar part to my new Christmas song so that's exactly what I did. Your videos are both educational and inspirational. All songs take crazy treks on their road to getting released and it makes it all seem attainable. Thanks again PoR, you rock!
Collective Soul is definitely underrated I love their stuff and my favorite is Heavy. So good and replayable.

Oh man I really love Collective Soul And I really love the way December drives and a good set of stereo speakers all boy oh boy. That was a great interview.
I had this album and listened to it pretty often. "Gel" was the first full song I learned on guitar. I also remember learning how to play December. And I saw them when they opened for Van Halen on the balance tour in 1995 at the Miami Arena. They were definitely one of the most relevant bands during that time. They got tons of radio airplay on rock radio.
I saw them on the same VH tour in Dallas. They were great!

This takes me back to a major life/career change I went through at the time. I had to start at the bottom and climb back up, all while breaking up from a long term relationship. Turned out to be good all around. Life changes, we change with it and music marks the spot.

Collective Soul has so many hits in the part of the world I was living in. They got more radio time than Nirvana or Pearl Jam. They were huge. I saw them in a Casino and couldn't believe they weren't still playing arenas - so many great songs. It's weird how they aren't revered like Sound Garden or Alice in Chains. They certainly had the material.
So in other words, they had so many hits in The World You Knew?

Collective Soul are one of those bands that fell of the radar in the UK. I only discovered them through Shine years later
I'm discovering them now. I usually check UK chart positions for acts I don't know and I see that Shine only got to #80. One of the many things I love about this channel is finding acts/songs that didn't hit over here.
They weren't huge in the U.K. but well worth a listen.

Great episode. Yeah…Collective Soul has been part of my playlist since the beginning. It would be interesting to have a deep dive on Precious Declaration or Blame as a follow up (Observation of Thoughts would be interesting as well)

Tremble for My Beloved may be my favorite Collective Soul song in terms of the music, but there are so many great songs from the band in terms of lyrics that I can't pick a favorite.

Absolutely. I was in my teens and twenties in the eighties through the mid nineties. A lot of my friends didn’t like nineties music, but I did.
@@johnblossom8447 The 90's bands were the antidote the synth bands of the 80's. Bands like Alice In Chains, Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, The Pixies, etc. all had a more organic sound that fit the time. One is not better than the other, just different.

I love your Channel I've seen it grow and I'm glad you're starting to interview more and more of these songwriters and musicians that I love and admire me being a songwriter and a musician myself listening to these awesome stories behind the songwriting just really resonates with me. Your style of interviewing you're genuine interest in the process and the whole back story to each song that you feature in your videos really helps the person you're interviewing open up especially in this case you can tell that Ed was standoffish at first but you totally got him to open up. I even like the fact that he strongly clarifies that he wrote recorded and composed the entire song. As a songwriter I know the feeling of having to give credit to someone else just because you're in a band with them even those who didn't do nothing to contribute to the actual song other than play with you live on tour.
The turning point was when Adam complimented the strings. After that, Ed started loosening up and telling his story.
"Maybe" off of Disciplined Breakdown to me should have and could have been just as huge as the World I Know.

Love the dudes honest opinion, NO he did not help write the song. It's a great example of how these bands have to stick together and help each other out but can create that division as one person may be doing all the heavy lifting.
Love the raspy lead vocals in Shine - and that cool signature lead guitar riff throughout the song ! And how the song intensifies at the end !

Yes! Loved Collective Soul! Back in the day on my Napster downloads! Sorry, I guess I ripped them off by doing that! But I did love their music!! The MTV video brought tears to my eyes! The guy ready to commit suicide, then the pidgins land on him and he laughs!!! This really hit me hard! Feeling so sad, then find something so funny, that you realize life is worth living, that don’t have anything to do with your problems! We get so wrapped up in ourselves, we can’t see the bigger picture!
I saw Collective Soul in San Antonio at the Aztec Theater in 2021. We were all so eager to see them, and cheered so loud it surprised the band. Ed, the singer, commented on the crowd and said they had gone out of their way to do this show. He said he was glad they did. It was a great concert, lots of energy.
I was raising kids in the 90s and NEVER got to listen to music so I lost an entire decade. Around 2005 I started to listen to music other than children’s music and the first song I heard on the radio was “December”. I thought I had discovered a new band to listen to but soon found out I had just been out of the times. That’s when I became a huge Collective Soul fan albeit a little late to the party😂. I loved the RUclips videos of Collective Soul with the Atlanta Youth Orchestra! The combination of rock music accompanied by orchestra instruments is epic!
Collective Soul is one of the greatest bands that came out of the 90's. I don't really consider them grunge. They're just a good rock band! Hey Adam, have you ever considered doing a video about the band Cry Of Love. They had a couple of hits "Peace Pipe" and "Good Thing", as you probably already know. Their whole first album is a masterpiece in my eyes. Keep on Rockin', my good man!🙏❤️🙏🤟😜🤟
