What a fantastic little camera, I skipped the XS10 when I knew this was coming with the same sensor, newer processor and bigger battery. Perfect upgrade for me, and I prefer the 26mp sensor over the 40pm sensor. So, this is it for me.
I bought the X-S20 and I love it for shooting video. I also wanted to just say how much I enjoy your videos. In the RUclips world where thumbnails are excessive in trying to grab your attention, I can always spot your thumbnails and gravitate to them. They’re calm. The font is beautiful and there’s a consistency about them that I find very pleasing. 🎉
Great breakdown. I canceled my order earlier today for the x100vi and ordered this camera. The wait for the x100vi is just ridiculous and feel this one will meet my needs better, especially with video. I've a diehard Canon user, but have been wanting a Fuji camera for awhile now and can't wait for it's arrival next week.
I'm still hesitating buying xs10 since it's release date 😂 Man, those miniscule battery is finally replaced. A huge applause for them.. Thank you for your review.
Yeah, the battery on the XS10 was always an issue. I think it's the only Fuji camera with in body stabilisation which uses that smaller battery, and you can see the battery just can't deal with it efficiently. This however...the battery level is incredible in my usage.
I have S10 and video stabilization often creates "wobbly" effect, not happy how stabilization was implemented on video features. For stills is ok. I was doing landscape photography in Wilsons Prom - Australia using Canon 6D mark 2 and Fuji S10 ... images were better from Canon, Fuji created kind of washed out colors, did not like it.
@@Greggiexplore I wouldn't trust video stabilisation in camera, not even the mighty Lumix GH series, a gimbal will be more practical and cheaper that way. For image preference is subjective matter, so to each their own. But I see where you're coming from, Canon has a likeable colour and the RAW is easy to handle.
One of the only reason why I returned the xs10. Worst battery life ever. Better ibis and better battery on the 20 really makes me want to get this one.
Thanks so much for the comment, glad you find the videos useful. I don't use any Fuji film simulations in my photography, these images are all edited RAW files
Thank you for your excellent review. One aspect that let me down, however, is that the viewfinder resolution hasn't seen an upgrade. In your daily use, do you perceive a significant difference compared to the X-T5?
I didn't know the viewfinder resolution when I had the camera as I had no specs. Maybe because I wasn't looking for it I didn't notice it, but it didn't feel like a significant difference to me
So much hate today from fuji stills only shooters.. I'm just stoked to see another opengate capable camera, and at this price! I'm a little let down that they didn't update the evf resolution and magnification, and add a couple more programmable buttons, but seems like a pretty solid hybrid.
It's a shame, but there's always someone disappointed at every camera launch because they wanted different features, or a different camera to be announced. The X-S10 was a very big seller though, so it's logical that this is the camera they announced, and the autofocus and battery actually make a big difference to still photographers.
Thanks for the review. I loved (was lost ) my X S10 and will now purchase a used XS10 because I do not shoot many videos. Great review a confirms why I purchased the X S10 2 years ago. Great results and very creative in camera options in the field.
I love my XS10, it's been great and holding up pretty well for my pro gigs. I be upgrading to the XH2s soon and hope to keep my xs10 paired with the 23 f2 for my daily carry stuff.
just wanted to drop a comment (for the YT algo) and also thank you for your gear reviews. don't normally watch gear reviews but i really really like yours. not the nonsensical pixel peeping of a random brick wall but actual usage.
Andy: for the custom Fn dial setting it starts at page 5/5. If you go up you can actually set this dial for ISO. So I would say it’s not very limited. 5:41
I was using a pre-launch version with early firmware (where the menus can often be limited or buggy) and that menu didn’t scroll. Still, it works on the XS10 so I should have known better
For the moment I have the Nikon 7200 (DX) for travelling and I use "back button focus" with Mi tum. Is it possible on the X-S20. I really thinking of buying the camera as a replacement for de Nikon 7200. Thank You
I don’t understand why people complain about the X-S series or X-H for that matter Fujifilm can’t be Fanservice: The Camera Company forever and ever, they have to make cameras for the masses to have money to make cameras for us that like the way Fuji is They’re not losing their soul, they’re just forced to walk a path, better than dying entirely like Olympus
Hahaha, me neither. I see many comments like that...to be honest, it surprises me how toxic the fanbase for cameras can be. Photography is a passion, and apart from it being how I make my living, it's something I take a huge amount of pleasure from. Surely, we all get into photography for the joy it can give us?! So I'm constantly surprised by how angry people can get about cameras. Fuji are a small company, and still manage to cover most bases photographically, but there will always be people who get angry because a company that's trying to survive in a highly competitive market doesn't make the exact product with the exact features that they think should be made.
Hi Andy, thanks for the review! I'm thinking about switching from the X-T2 to the X-S20 and I don't really care about most "pro features" on the high-end bodies like dual card slots and weather sealing or the analog dials. My only concern is the viewfinder - do you find it too small or is it not that noticeable after a certain period?
Thanks for the comment. When I had the camera it was pre-launch and I didn't have the specs, so I didn't have the details on the resolution and size of the EVF, but I can't say I noticed it in a negative way, or that it was a problem. I'm used to switching between the GFX, XT5 and XS10, and for sure sometimes I do notice the size when I first change, but within a couple of minutes I'm used to it and stop noticing it.
@@lennarthallenberger6761 some settings are isolated to certain buttons / dials even on the s-x10 it may be that iso isn't on that list for that dial yet, but I checked on my s-x10 and it is there.
@@cwehden quick question about the dial settings on your x-s10. When shooting in manual moder (or AP) having a lens with aperture ring mounted (set to f4, e.g. not auto aperture) what setting does the front dial change? Is it aperture as well?
Hi wondering what lenses you recommend for this? 16-80 with a 8mm prime great option for city and landscape photography? We also like to take selfies and video/vlog sometime. Curious to your answer 😊
I have an X-E4 and am contemplating an upgrade for either the X-S20 or X-T5, I dont do videos at all just photos. I still didnt handled the cameras in person, and since you know very well both models I would like to hear your points on my pros and cons for each model from my perspective. On the X-S20 side I see as pros the smaller, the grip, the 26M sensor (smaller files, I do not print) and PASM, it feels to ne it is easier to grip and control the camera one-handed with PASM and the control dials. The cons for X-S20 would be a smaller darker viewfinder. I do not mind the flip screen. As for the X-T5 for me the major pro would a better viewfinder but not sure how much better. The rest seems all cons, heavier, larger files, not that easy to operate fully one handed. Thoughts? The buttons between the two models feel nice on both? Os is the S20 a bit cheaper in the feeling, Thank you for such an excellent review on both models!
I think you already know which you prefer. It's a really subjective thing, a lot of what you see as advantage of the XS20 are things I prefer on the XT5 (bigger grip, more resolution, I don't like PASM and don't like the flip screen), so it's very personal. But it's clear from your comment that you know which camera you prefer, so just go with what you feel 😉
I have the XT10,20,30 but I waited to to get the XS20 and decided not to get the XS10. I finally learned my lesson. But then again I also bought the XA3,5,7. I love Fujifilm. In the XA7 I got the green version. Very cool. ❤
Great video as always, Andy. I’d be curious to see a comparison between the x-s20 and the X-t4, especially for shooting video. The specs seem similar between the 2, and the price is also comparable considering it’s easy to find the xt-4 (new) at a discounted price (here in Sweden anyway). I feel like the battle would come down to the retro look and handling of the X-t4 vs the updated processor and better portability of the X-s20. I’d love to hear your thoughts.
Thanks for the comment Michael. I no longer have an X-T4 to compare it too, but I think you're right in that a lot of the difference will be down to personal preference of how the different cameras feel. The X-S20 has considerably better battery life and with the new processor I suspect it will be able to record for longer...and of course you have 6.2K. I think the X-S20 is probably a better video camera in terms of specs and what it's capable of doing, and the grip is probably better for video, but the X-T4 has weather sealing, dual cards and the analogue dials.
Do you think it would be better to buy the Fujifilm X-S20 with the XF 16-50mm f/2.8-4.8 kit lens, the 15-45mm lens (black), or just the camera body and then purchase a third-party lens? Which lens would you recommend for both video and photography that is still fairly compact?
I think that's the thing to remember. Fuji's strategy is to first recoup the development costs of the new tech (the processor, the new sensors used in the XT5 and XH2 cameras) so the more popular cameras get launched first, and then the ones (like the X-E and X-Pro) which are more of a niche.
Hey Andy, great video! I've been planning to switch from the Canon Rebel T7 to the XS10 for quite a while. I shoot a good balanced amount of pictures and video and I want to keep that balance. Would you recommend I'd still go for the XS10 or switch to this XS20?
Andy, for landscape photography, would you still recommend X-T5 or X-S20? For landscape photography, what should be considered to decide between the X-T5 vs X-S20?
The X-T5. The higher resolution, better build quality, double card slows, and the fact that the flip out screen on the XS20 doesn't work well with l brackets, all make it a better landscape camera
@@AndyMumford thanks! Appreciate you taking time to respond. Another suggestion I’ve been getting is the X-T3ii. Your thoughts? And if there is one lens I want to start with for landscape, what would it be? I could add more lens as I go and learn.
I'm ok that they didn't give us the 40MP sensor because they gave us internal 10bit 422 which is sick! Love it! How's the rolling shutter in video compared to the X-T5?
Thank you for the great review, Andy! I’m looking for a portable camera that can produce great stills and video. Due to the similar price point (in AUS), would you suggest the X-S20 or X-T30 II? And what would be the best all rounder lens to begin with?
As a still photographer using an X-T2. How much of a difference can i expect in terms of image quality and autofocus? I have a toddler at home and the focus is sometimes quite a challenge 😂
Hi Andy, great video. I’m looking to upgrade my XT2 and I’ve been looking at the XT5 but as a hobbyist shooter I’m thinking the XS20 may be a better option for me. Bit of a learning curve with the PASM dial etc and flip screen. However, how much difference in size and weight is there over the XT5?
Hi Andy, thank you for this comprehensive review and for the great content you keep on posting. I want to buy my first camera to learn photography in preparation for a trip to Namibia in 18 months and I am hesitating between the XT5 and the XS20. I will use it for stills 95% of the time, so the video capabilities are not that important. I will use it mainly for travel and street photography and to capture family moments. I do not see myself getting into postproduction, cropping, etc… I was thinking about starting with a zoom kit lens and maybe a 23mn f2 prime to learn and grow. Which camera would you recommend for a beginner please ? Do you believe that starting with a PASM camera would impair my learning journey?
I had the same conundrum as yours, I have used XT2 with kit lens, XPRO2 with prime. Both the camera bit bigger for travel. Now I have settled with T30 with primes for travel, so much lighter.
Neither camera will impair your learning journey as they're both fantastic tool for photography, so when it comes to controls you should go with what feels the most natural. Then it comes down to which other things you like. The XT5 has a bigger and better viewfinder, dual cards and more robust build...but it's also bigger and heavier, so which of those matters to you. The XT5 also has higher resolution of 40mp. People tend to put more value on megapixels than they should as for the most part they only matter if you're printing larger or cropping deep. Sure, you'll notice a difference in Lightroom when you zoom in to 100%, but in terms of output, you won't see any difference at all on a print below 60cm, or on an image that's been resized for web. So how important are large prints to you? You can't go wrong with either camera, and I suggest trying them both out in a camera shop to see what feels right. Particularly the controls and EVF
@@sivakumar4053 thanks a lot for sharing your perspective. I love the form and the look of the XT30, however I would prefer to have IBIS as a safety net. Cheers.
@@AndyMumford thanks a lot Andy for taking the time to respond and for your advices. I feel like 26mp would be plenty enough for my needs, and the combination of this resolution with the newest processor would probably be the winning package, even though I do prefer the look and feel of the xt5. I will try to test both cameras in a photo store: being over 50 years old, the viewfinder definition is indeed an important factor I need to consider. Thank you and have a fab day.
Hi Andy, I'm evaluating getting an X-T5 or X-S20. I mostly capture landscapes or streets in my travels and I always use one lens (18-55mm with my X-T1). It's always still, never video. Weight and compactness are reasons I keep going back to X-T1. That's the reason I am gravitating towards X-S20. The main factor is prices are very close on the X-T5 body and X-S20 where I'm located and the weight difference is not that huge. But as a package size and weight, I feel there is a significant difference between the X-T5 and X-S20. I know you mentioned that it can be an excellent primary camera. Do you think I'll lose anything by not getting X-T5 if we ignore weather sealing, manual dials and double memory card?
Apart form the things you said, no, I don't think you're missing much. The XT5 does have a better EVF and I prefer the articulating screen for photography over the flip out screen of the XS20 (particularly if you're using an L-bracket). The XS20 however, does have a better handgrip for handheld shooting
Hello. Are you satisfied with the photo quality of this camera? I currently own xh2s + 16-80 mm f4 lens. However, when it comes to photography, my old camera Canon EOS 5D MK2 gives better results. xh2s is ultra successful in video, but there is a lack of texture in photos. I don't know if this is due to the lens on it. I haven't used a prime lens on a Fuji film body yet... I'm curious about your thoughts on photography.
I don't actually own this camera, I just borrowed it for the review so can't say more than I said in the review. I use the XS10, but pretty much only for shooting video
Good overview Andy, appreciated. Do you know if the subject detection autofocus can be used for video as well as stills? I have the X-S10 which produces great images anyway but obviously does not have the newer processor or subject detection AF. I would find that useful for wildlife photos/video.
They're very different cameras. The X100 is a street and travel camera for still, this feels like its more of a video camera. To love the X100 you've got to love the analogue dials and a fixed lens, and this has neither. I think the X100 is an amazing camera, but it's not practical for me as a tool, and I prefer interchangeable lens cameras for my landscape photography as most of my work is either ultra wide or telephoto
Thanks for another very nice product review. Any ideas about sensor heat build up during 4 minutes long exposure still photography? Will the additional fan become a must for such usage?
Hope you can clarify that Flog is not the same as RAW video (16:50) which is something this camera can output but only externally to appropriate monitors/recorders.
Really appreciate your videos and insights. Love that this has the new battery. As much as this has, I'm finding more and more that the fully articulated screen just isn't for me. Wish more cameras had the screen that the X-E4 has. One question, can you take photos while the X-S20 is recording video?
Thanks for the comment, glad you enjoyed the video. I fully understand what you say about the screen as I prefer the articulated screen of the XT5 and GFX, but when it comes to making vlogs (and Fuji are clearly pitching this at that market) you really need the flip around screen. The X-E4 one is great, but works because that camera has a flat top plate. This has the big flash bulge, so the screen would need really long hinges to be able to reach up over that be usable.
@@AndyMumford thanks for your reply. I have heard that the South Island is spectacular. I’ve never been to NZ and would love to do one of your workshops there.
That depends entirely on how you prefer to shoot and what you expect to be shooting. Wide, mid range, tele? If it were me I'd say 10-24 and 55-200, but other people might prefer the mid range like a 16-80 and 70-300
Thanks for the time put in your review! Im a Canon owner (R5) and i love that camera, however... as i dont need to explain to you, its chunky even only with something of a 24-105 f4L So i noticed that i tended to only carry it with me when i deliberately go out for shooting, but not anymore on a casual walk, especially when i travel somewhere (say to meet friends) and then we go on a spontaneous walk. And i sort of miss that. So im looking for a "Backup" (i dont mean that in a negative way) camera i can "throw" in my bag without much thought and carry with me for those occasions where i would usually not grab my heavy R5... and i always wanted a fuji. I do prefer the looks of the XT30/XT5 espeeeecially in silver but in the end, i want a camera to use not to look at :D However, my brain (im a engineer and thats my curse) challanges my intentions hard with thoughts "why dont you switch fully, sell your canon gear and go X-T5 only" etc. ... and my GAS is not yet strong enough to just impulse buy something. So i was wondering when you said you took the X-S10 as a backup camera... whats your thoughts on having a main camera with all bells and whistles for specific stuff and a carry on camera. Is there anything in your expirience that could help me make up my mind? (If id buy it, id probably get the S20 over the S10 for the larger battery, together with the 18-55 f2.8-4 kit to have a flexible but compact ish package)
Thanks for the comment. When I say I use it as a back up camera, what I mean is that it's used as a second camera alongside either my XT5 or GFX. With the XT5 I use it alongside so I don't have to change lenses in the field, and also I always travel with two bodies in case one fails (which fortunately has never happened). With the GFX I use it purely as a video camera. It's never a camera that I take on it's own, it's always a secondary camera
Enjoyed your review very much. I am currently using an XT30 and considering the XS20. However, I shoot mainly stills. I am attracted by the larger battery, image stabilization, and better auto focus. Have no idea when Fujifilm might upgrade the XT30ii. Planning a trip to Europe and considering upgrading. Do you have any thoughts I should consider? Thanks again.
Thanks for the comment. You'll certainly see a significant difference with the image stabilisation and battery to the XT30, but you lose the retro feel and look (if that's important). I don't know Fuji's plans, but the rumours are usually pretty accurate and so it's highly unlikely that there'll be an upgrade of the XT30II this year
@@AndyMumford well I guess better can be a subjective term in photography? Let me see if I can rephrase the question. Which pictures did you prefer any why interns of quality?
Been looking forward to your video on this camera! Thanks again! Regarding the slight change in grip size/shape, do you find there to be more space for your fingers when using the XF16-55/XF50-140 vs on the X-S10?
Thanks for your comment. That's an interesting question and I don't have an answer as I didn't use it with either of those lenses (although I'll be using it with the 150-600mm in June). I used the X-S10 with those lenses, which is what I based my comment on, but I don't remember having a problem with there no being space. I would say this is the pretty much exactly the same as there's the same distance between the lens mount and the beginning of the grip. The extra thickness of the grip is what makes the camera a little longer, rather than reducing the space between grip and lens
excellent review,👌 I have one question, does the shutter speed in video go up to 4000 max or 8000? and is the lowest ISO in video still 640? (in DR400 mode) because I don't mind shooting video with high shutter speeds, but with my x-s10 I was always forced to use ND filters.
Good question about maximum shutter speed, and one I don't have the answer to as I didn't check, and have returned the camera to Fuji. If I remember correctly, it will shoot video below ISO640, but not F-log.
@@AndyMumford thanks for the reply, I've checked the fuji webside and they wrote in the specs it's 4000, and I was hoping it's a mistake. xt-4 goes up to 8000, and my olympus em1 III goes up to 32000 which is really nice. I can shoot at 16000 with an f1.2 lens on a sunny day without nd filters. :)
I would like to see AF in video comparison with canon and Sony. I have canon M50 and I love the specs of new Fujifilm camera but I don't want to risk getting camera with worse AF in video which is what I use it for. How is AF performance for sitting head video when person is waving hands or showing products?
I haven't used the Sony so I can't offer any comparison. For autofocus on a person sitting talking (pretty much like me in this video...I wave my hands a lot) I think this will be fine. The X-S10 (which I filmed this video with) is pretty good, but does occasionally miss focus (although I don't think it did in this video), however the XS20 is MUCH more sticky
Is the housing around the pop-up flash made of metal on the X-S20 ? I really hate the plastic housing of the pop-up flash on my X-S10 - feels cheap IMO and out of place because the rest of the camera is essentially metal. If the X-S20's is made of metal, that might be the final icing on the cake to make me upgrade to the X-S20.
Apologies for the cut/paste reply: It's entirely possible. The camera I had didn't have the latest firmware (it's usual with pre-launch cameras) and there were a couple of things missing in the menu (and some menus weren't accessible). I got the camera with no manual, and the only specs were the weight, two of the dimensions, and battery life, so I had to work out a lot of it myself. Things do get missed when you're trying to put a review together quickly, so if I did get that wrong then I apologise
This took me a while to work out, it's not super obvious that there's more pages of options. I believe you have to scroll UP from the default page it lands you on. Being able to set this is a bit of a game changer, I rarely change/use different film Sims.
Thanks for the comment. The canyon is a relative secret and very few people outside of climbers and hikers know about it. It's in Arrabida (it's actually called the Fenda da Arrabida) and it's right behind the beach there. It's a short, steep hike up, and the trial isn't well marked, but it's a stunning place to go
Great review. I am not sure that I get it properly but I am pretty sure that you can assign left top customizable wheel dial to ISO and it is working tha same as in X-T cameras. I am using it like that in my X-S10 but maybe it is not a case in the new X-S20. I am actually waiting for mine to be available on presale - already ordered 😁
I had to pause for a moment because I just saw the part on AF where it was tracking you moving a lens around the frame and staying on the lens. Did Fuji add object tracking?? I thought their cameras could only track the entities they've defined, like animals, birds, planes, etc.
From what I understand, it also has some kind of auto object tracking, where it decides on the kind of object and tracks it. I used the lens cap because I had it to hand, but I could just as easily have used my phone or my hand and it would have been the same
Hello Andy. Love your videos. I just ordered the X-S20 and plan to use it just for video. I have a lot of XF lenses and will keep one of my x-t3 cameras for photography. For me that suits my needs right now. I may even use the X-S20 for macro handheld shots with the image stabilization, since my x-t3 does not have IBIS. I completely agree with you on the analog dials. I much prefer them over PSAM. Now that I will have both, so I’ll have an opportunity to see if that is still the case. I am a former Canon shooter and my last Canon was the 5D Mark III 10 years ago when I switched to Fuji X-T1.
Would you choose X-S20 over X-H2 if price is not a concern? Would love to have a top hybrid camera but afraid 40mp sensor is not the good to for indoor and XH2 is 170g heavier to lug it when traveling. On other hand XH2 has no problem with overheating recording long videos in 4k
Hi Andy, great video! I'm thinking about buying the X-S20, but I'm worried to keep Lightroom in my workflow as there seems to be issues with Fuji sensors. Have you experienced that issue? How do you deal with it? I apologise if that question has already been asked. Thanks! Valentin
Hmm, well I'll start this with the caveat that it's a personal thing, but I honestly believe that this is an issue that has been a little exaggerated. I mentioned in the video when I was showing the foliage that you couldn't see any of the worms, but if you zoomed into 400% maybe you would. My own experience as someone who shoots professionally and sells prints, is that it's not an issue. I rarely bother looking at my files at more than 100% because no-one will ever view the files like that, and I'm careful about how I apply sharpening. I've used Fuji cameras with Lightroom for 8 years, and (again, speaking for myself personally), it's not an issue.
@@AndyMumford Thank you very much for the detailed answer! It's amazing to see that you take the time to answer comments like mine. I've been admiring your photos for a few years now and knowing that you don't do anything to "correct" those worms definitely reassured me for using lightroom. I hope you have a great evening!
I find Lightroom a little disappointing when compared to other RAW processors, but in recent years the gap is smaller than it was. The worms are due to over sharpening …. The default in Lightroom is too heavy handed for Fuji files …. I apply an import preset so it reduces worms. To be honest all cameras produce worms if they are over sharpened. I find some images with lots of foliage to be slightly off sometimes, so use Lightroom’s Enhance function …. It helps and creates a separate DNG file that matches most other RAW editors. I have trialled DXO Pure RAW recently and it was amazing the details rendered (I think there is some AI used when it creates an extra DNG file). Ian Worth did a you Tube video recently and he got similar detail printing to A1 or A0 size using a FF Canon R5 with 24-70 to a Fuji XH2 & 16-55 when he used Pure Raw 3
If you mean auto iso in pictures mood it should have it because much older Fuji cameras from that segment have that. My xt20 which was realest in 2017 has auto iso, you can even choose the highest iso the camera can use in auto iso mode, you can also choose the longest shutter time the camera can use before switching to higher iso. I’ve never owned xs10 but my friend does and it has auto iso too but I don’t remember exactly how it is set
Yes, it does. You can set all of the exposure settings (ISO, aperture or shutter speed) to auto independently or all together. You can also set the parameters of auto ISO, so for example set it so it never goes above ISO3600, if you like
I bought the X-S20 yesterday :) but I can't say I'm super impressed with the video AF on the X-S20, I'm looking at the Sony A6700 as well. The Fuji has 6.2k open gate, 2 more stops of IBIS, better webcam with film sims, no overheating in video, better battery, better screen, joystick, fuji colours, some unique great lenses - so that's a lot to love! - but if you're not in focus, what's the point? I like that Sony have bulletproof autofocus no matter what, making it so easy for filming myself, focus breathing correction (those F2 Fuji primes have terrible focus breathing!), 120fps 4k is cool, water resistance, higher ISO range (better in low light?), the same lenses are normally 20-30% cheaper for Sony. I'm very torn if to keep the X-S20 or to get the Sony! - Any thoughts?
Honestly, I can't really say. As i said in the video, I'm not really one to comment on AF as I'm such a "light" user. As a landscape photographer videos like this are about as much as I ever challenge the autofocus. Ultimately if you feel the AF in Fuji is letting you down, then it's probably not worth sticking with.
@@007UA16 It can do well when it has a well lit subject it recognises, but even in good lighting there's no tap to track and if you point at an object not in its' AI database, even with area focus, you get this: ruclips.net/video/En5Sp2W9Sh0/видео.html - pay attention that even when something is not moving and in focus, it still randomly pulses.
I have the same camera, with the fan. Disappointed to discover that at 10 bit 4.2.2 in All-Intra, you can only record video up to 45 minutes continuously, in whatever mode (with a very fast SD card). And nothing to do with overheating. Not good enough.
It is possible to assign the iso to the top left control dial on the xs10 (that is how I am using it) so I am sure it is possible on the 20 too, but I remember it took me while to figure out how to do it.
Hi Andy, great video here on this camera. New subscriber and IG follower. I am actually on the lookout for my first "proper/serious" camera rather than just using my pixel phone on my travels and I found your channel while looking for reviews on this particular camera. How would you say this camera would be for a beginner to photography? I would mainly be looking for still portraits, landscape and city scenes and maybe the odd wildlife thrown in as well. I would like something relatively easy to pick up and use but which would allow me to improve my skills overtime i.e. I would prefer a camera to be useful for a good few years, rather than a beginner camera and then switch to a different one down the road. I have read some good things about Fujifilm cameras taking photos which are decent "out of the box" but wanted to ask you about this. The X-S20 looks a good bet for me and being pretty new, should be reasonably future proofed for my needs as well. Are there any other cameras that you would suggest? Ideally, id be looking for something up to about £1.5k for camera + lens. Lastly, if you think that the X-S20 would be a good option for me, would the XF18-55mmF2.8-4 R LM OIS lens kit be the one that you recommend? Or would the base camera and a separate lens be the right option? Sorry for the long and detailed question, hope you are somewhere other than the UK at the moment!
Thanks for the comment. To answer briefly this is a perfect camera for beginners, and I would go with the 16-80mm f4 lens. There may be other cameras that are better, but I only shoot with Fuji, and not having used any of the competitors I can't really say what they offer. As for not being in the UK, I haven't lived there for more than 25 years, so no...I'm definitely not there at the moment.
no problem setting Fn-D to ISO on my X-S10. I'll bet you can do it on your X-S20. Try again and pay attention to the page number displayed at the top of the screen when choosing the option to assign.
This was a pre-launch camera and as is typical, it didn't the firmware it will have at launch and the menus sometimes don't work as smoothly as they should. The menu wouldn't scroll when I was testing it, although I should probably have looked at the XS10 to see if it was possible there.
@@AndyMumford thanks for replying. I see when you right-arrow into the Fn-D options from the Function Setting screen (at 5:38 of your review), that you are on page 5/5 for Fn-D Dial Settings on the Fn Dial Setting screen at 5:40 of the video). This is similar on the X-S10. The default setting of Fn-D is at the end of a long list. This confused me and many reviewers but eventually I realized that you only need to scroll up to an earlier page of available options to choose ISO for that dial. What you say at 5:45 is flat out wrong and you should correct the video. Cheers and happy shooting.
I think it's remarkable how many different styles of cameras Fuji makes. Like the dials? You got 'em. Want PASM? Got it. OVF? Sure. Small form factor that does everything and actually has a grip? Yep. Large? Covered. I mean, come on. Sony/Canon/Nikon aren't trying this hard. I'm a former Sony shooter. Why former? Because I can't stand my camera and it's sitting somewhere abandoned, with a dead battery. It stifled my love for photography. Only Fuji makes me want to shoot again. All I have to do is decide which one of these great options to buy! If image quality is as good as the X-S10/X-T4, this will be my camera. I can't really tell from the images taken for this review. I'm glad they stuck with the 26MP sensor tho. I really love the small form factor--size being an issue that has kept me from buying the H2 series, as I'm a wimpy girl. It will be awesome if this camera works well for birding, given the upgraded AF.
Indeed, for a comparatively (with Sony, Canon and Nikon) small company Fuji really do make an effort to cover all bases with the XT, XH, XS, XE and Pro lines, and then GFX onto of that...and yet people still complain and gripe that the exact specifications they want for their camera aren't available or about the order in which the cameras are launched. It's hard to show image quality accurately on a video..you're seeing a 26mp image that's been compressed into a 4k timeline, and then compressed again for rendering and internet upload. the image quality though is identical to the XS10 and XT4
On the X-S10, the custom modes on the dial could only save photo settings and not video settings. Is that true for the X-S20 or can the custom modes be used to save video settings like they can on the X-H2s?
@@AndyMumford no worries. I just saw the review on the Fuji Guys Channel and it appears that it does allow custom video modes just like the X-H2s. They show it at about the 5:10 mark.
Thanks for the comment. No, it's not weather sealed. That being the case, I've used the X-S10 in all kinds of weather and it's still working fine, so as long as you're sensible I don't see it being a problem
@@AndyMumford thanks for the response. Im starting to get into photography again. My first camera was a EOS 500D. Would you recommend this camera over the x-t5 within the Fuji universe because of the lack of a mode dail ?
The XT5 is the better camera, but has the different interface …. I prefer the traditional dials to the PASM interface. You can set the PASM modes on the XT5, it’s just requires leaving the dials and aperture ring on A …. Then manually adjusting what you want. If you can, I recommend trying out the different interfaces in store. The XT5 has higher res sensor, weather sealing, dual card slots, better viewfinder, and a different screen (3-way tilt, instead of flip out). The XT5 screen is better for stills, where the floppy screen is well suited to video
They will all produce very similar images, so it really depends on which controls you prefer, which you like using more, and how important video is to you
Hi Andy, thanks for another informative video. Im so torn about getting the xs20 simply because it isn’t weather sealed.. in every other respect it seems perfect for me. Ive never used fuji cameras before so the dial layout wouldn’t be a big deal. My aging iMac would probably explode if i tried a 40 megapixel image and I rarely print larger than a4. Anyway. I currently use a Canon 80d but have developed osteoarthritis in my wrists and hands so need something smaller and lighter. Maybe i will have to become a fine weather photographer 🤷♂️
I wouldn't worry too much about weather sealing...I've taken the XS10 pretty much everywhere, from Iceland (rain and waterfall spray), Namibia (sand), Dolomites (more rain) and it's been fine
I’m very surprised that you can’t set the left dial to be the iso dial. My X-T100 can do that. I don’t mean this in a rude way, but you’re sure you looked at page one of the options when configuring the dial? I know when the X-T200 came out, a lot of people didn’t realize that there was multiple pages of options. The camera looks really good though! Fantastic alternative for anyone who wants a Fuji camera but not the dials or the high end X-H2.
It's entirely possible. The camera I had didn't have the latest firmware (it's usual with pre-launch cameras) and there were a couple of things missing in the menu. I got the camera with no manual, and the only specs were the weight, two of the dimensions, and battery life, so I had to work out a lot of it myself. Things do get missed when you're trying to put a review together quickly, so if I did get that wrong then I apologise
@@AndyMumford your video probably already answered that - I have the X-S10 and, at first, did not thought that I could set the left dial for ISO, since there is no option on the screen. But it looks like that is the same thing as the X-S10 (you could try on yours): look the page number on the screen - is "5/5". Fujifilm, no intuitively, put the default setting in the last page of the options, not as the 1st one. If you move the joystick up, a lot of other options will be available for the left dial, including ISO. Cheers. 😊
Is there a way to set the unmarked dials to a specific function in ALL shooting modes? I find it far from intuitive if dials change function depending on whether you're shooting M or A.
Depends on your usage. They're very different cameras targeted at very different audiences. If you shoot videos, definitely, but if you want the experience of shooting photos manually, want a small form factor with no lense change the x100v is is still great
Not really. They are very very different cameras. As the other commenter noted, this is a superb camera for people who mostly shoot video, but it has very different controls and feel to the X100
X-S20 brought back that passion I have for photography.
Good to hear, it's a lovely camera
What a fantastic little camera, I skipped the XS10 when I knew this was coming with the same sensor, newer processor and bigger battery. Perfect upgrade for me, and I prefer the 26mp sensor over the 40pm sensor. So, this is it for me.
Thanks for the comment, glad you found the video useful. Enjoy the camera
Thanks of the comment, really glad you enjoy the videos
Great breakdown. I canceled my order earlier today for the x100vi and ordered this camera. The wait for the x100vi is just ridiculous and feel this one will meet my needs better, especially with video. I've a diehard Canon user, but have been wanting a Fuji camera for awhile now and can't wait for it's arrival next week.
Thanks for the comment, glad you found the video useful. Have fun with the XS20
Looking to buy this as my first ever camera to upgrade from whatever phone im using at a given time. Very excited by its broad range of capabilities
Have fun with it
I'm still hesitating buying xs10 since it's release date 😂
Man, those miniscule battery is finally replaced.
Thank you for all you free content Andy. You are such an inspiration to me and my cousins here in the Philippines! We really appreciate you.
By the way, what fujifilm recipe did you use for those street photos?
Thanks so much for the comment, glad you find the videos useful. I don't use any Fuji film simulations in my photography, these images are all edited RAW files
Thank you for your excellent review. One aspect that let me down, however, is that the viewfinder resolution hasn't seen an upgrade. In your daily use, do you perceive a significant difference compared to the X-T5?
I didn't know the viewfinder resolution when I had the camera as I had no specs. Maybe because I wasn't looking for it I didn't notice it, but it didn't feel like a significant difference to me
@@AndyMumford Thank you - to my eye the difference in viewfinder resolution between the S-X10/20 and X-T5 is very noticeable.
Very informative video! I was about to buy XS10, good thing I watched this before doing so. Thanks!!
Thanks for the comment, enjoy the XS20
Beautiful color at 17:06 😍
Thanks so much
So much hate today from fuji stills only shooters..
Second that. It has been quite alot of middle aged men ugly crying in various groups sadly.
The whining really is astounding.
What a lovely voice you have, Andy. Three thumbs up. Great review, too.
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed the video
Come on... I just bought the x-s10 yesterday...
Oof, that’s gotta hurt. But at $999US you did save some cash for lenses 😃
it's your fault. It was known that xs 20 appears:))
Just return it🤷🏼♂️
It’s cheaper
Return it! Say it was not for you
Hi Andy, always brilliant and so very well detailed. Thank You!
Thanks so much 🙏
Thanks for the review. I loved (was lost ) my X S10 and will now purchase a used XS10 because I do not shoot many videos. Great review a confirms why I purchased the X S10 2 years ago. Great results and very creative in camera options in the field.
Thanks for the comment, glad the review was useful
I love my XS10, it's been great and holding up pretty well for my pro gigs. I be upgrading to the XH2s soon and hope to keep my xs10 paired with the 23 f2 for my daily carry stuff.
Yup, if you're shooting with the XH2S then the XS20 is probably a bit redundant
just wanted to drop a comment (for the YT algo) and also thank you for your gear reviews.
don't normally watch gear reviews but i really really like yours. not the nonsensical pixel peeping of a random brick wall but actual usage.
Thanks for the comment, glad to know you enjoy the video
Andy: for the custom Fn dial setting it starts at page 5/5. If you go up you can actually set this dial for ISO. So I would say it’s not very limited. 5:41
I was using a pre-launch version with early firmware (where the menus can often be limited or buggy) and that menu didn’t scroll. Still, it works on the XS10 so I should have known better
For the moment I have the Nikon 7200 (DX) for travelling and I use "back button focus" with Mi tum. Is it possible on the X-S20. I really thinking of buying the camera as a replacement for de Nikon 7200. Thank You
Thanks for this review, really enjoy watching all your videos and reviews.
Thanks so much for the comment, glad you enjoy the videos
I don’t understand why people complain about the X-S series or X-H for that matter
Fujifilm can’t be Fanservice: The Camera Company forever and ever, they have to make cameras for the masses to have money to make cameras for us that like the way Fuji is
They’re not losing their soul, they’re just forced to walk a path, better than dying entirely like Olympus
Great upgrades from Fuji.
More than anything this video made me want to go back to Portugal!
Thanks so much for the comment. And Portugal, I've lived here 26 years now and really love the country
I'm used to switching between the GFX, XT5 and XS10, and for sure sometimes I do notice the size when I first change, but within a couple of minutes I'm used to it and stop noticing it.
on the x-s10 you CAN set left top dial to iso, but are you saying you can't on the x-s20?
I wasn't able to, but it's worth pointing out that this is a pre-release version and sometimes they won't have the latest firmware update.
I'm sure you can, you can see in the video at 5:40 that there are 5 pages of settings to choose from for the left dial. Same as on X-S10.
@@lennarthallenberger6761 some settings are isolated to certain buttons / dials even on the s-x10 it may be that iso isn't on that list for that dial yet, but I checked on my s-x10 and it is there.
@@AndyMumford thanks andy, great review, your channel is amazing.
@@cwehden quick question about the dial settings on your x-s10. When shooting in manual moder (or AP) having a lens with aperture ring mounted (set to f4, e.g. not auto aperture) what setting does the front dial change? Is it aperture as well?
Andy, excellent review and very helpful.
Thanks so much for the comment, glad you found the video useful
Hi wondering what lenses you recommend for this? 16-80 with a 8mm prime great option for city and landscape photography? We also like to take selfies and video/vlog sometime.
Curious to your answer 😊
I use the 16-80 a lot and it’s a great lens. It’ll be perfect with this camera with the 8mm as well
I have an X-E4 and am contemplating an upgrade for either the X-S20 or X-T5, I dont do videos at all just photos.
I preordered it. Perfect hybrid for me for private use
Have fun with it
I have the XT10,20,30 but I waited to to get the XS20 and decided not to get the XS10. I finally learned my lesson. But then again I also bought the XA3,5,7. I love Fujifilm. In the XA7 I got the green version. Very cool. ❤
Thanks for the comment
@@AndyMumfordwhich is better for photographers?
Do you think it would be better to buy the Fujifilm X-S20 with the XF 16-50mm f/2.8-4.8 kit lens, the 15-45mm lens (black), or just the camera body and then purchase a third-party lens? Which lens would you recommend for both video and photography that is still fairly compact?
Can't really give you an opinion as I've not tried either lens
Loved the review, Andy. Excellent!
Thanks for the comment, glad you enjoyed the review
I’m sure Fuji will sell a lot of these, but I’m really waiting for the X-E5 and X100VI.
And xpro4 fs
I think that's the thing to remember. Fuji's strategy is to first recoup the development costs of the new tech (the processor, the new sensors used in the XT5 and XH2 cameras) so the more popular cameras get launched first, and then the ones (like the X-E and X-Pro) which are more of a niche.
I'd love an X-T50, with this sensor and processor combo, but classic fuji controls (d-pad please).
Hey Andy, great video! I've been planning to switch from the Canon Rebel T7 to the XS10 for quite a while. I shoot a good balanced amount of pictures and video and I want to keep that balance. Would you recommend I'd still go for the XS10 or switch to this XS20?
Thanks for the comment, glad you enjoyed the video. Of those two cameras I’d recommend the XS20
@@AndyMumford Great! Thank you, Andy!
Ah, I didn't really test for rolling shutter. Sorry about that
@@AndyMumford np
Thanks for the review! Even though as my first camera I've ordered X-S10 will see how it feels and then maybe in the future I will upgrade to X-S20!
Thanks for the comment, enjoy the XS10
Thank you for the great review, Andy! I’m looking for a portable camera that can produce great stills and video. Due to the similar price point (in AUS), would you suggest the X-S20 or X-T30 II? And what would be the best all rounder lens to begin with?
Really depends on which one feels better in the hand. The XS20 is a better video camera, but the XT30 is smaller.
As a still photographer using an X-T2. How much of a difference can i expect in terms of image quality and autofocus? I have a toddler at home and the focus is sometimes quite a challenge 😂
In terms of the image quality, it's almost the same, but the AF is much much faster than the XT2
It’s a bit lighter and small, but the large grip of the XS20 does make it feel a similar size
I do not see myself getting into postproduction, cropping, etc…
I was thinking about starting with a zoom kit lens and maybe a 23mn f2 prime to learn and grow.
@@AndyMumford Cool. Thanks

Thank you for the quick review 😊
I'm just wondering if the new big battery can also be used on the X-S10 😅
Thanks for the comment. No, the big battery can't work on the X-S10. It's a completely different size and shape.
I would love to see X-S20L with 12MP & 4k 120, even through this X-S20 is superb, I am going to get one
Good overview Andy, appreciated. Do you know if the subject detection autofocus can be used for video as well as stills? I have the X-S10 which produces great images anyway but obviously does not have the newer processor or subject detection AF. I would find that useful for wildlife photos/video.
Thanks for the comment, glad you enjoyed the review. The subject tracking works for video as well
@@AndyMumford Thanks Andy, that's good to know 🙂
Would you take this over the x100v?
They're very different cameras. The X100 is a street and travel camera for still, this feels like its more of a video camera. To love the X100 you've got to love the analogue dials and a fixed lens, and this has neither. I think the X100 is an amazing camera, but it's not practical for me as a tool, and I prefer interchangeable lens cameras for my landscape photography as most of my work is either ultra wide or telephoto
Thanks for another very nice product review. Any ideas about sensor heat build up during 4 minutes long exposure still photography? Will the additional fan become a must for such usage?
Thanks for the comment. I honestly can’t say about the sensor heating after exposures that long as I’ve never done any
Hope you can clarify that Flog is not the same as RAW video (16:50) which is something this camera can output but only externally to appropriate monitors/recorders.
Hi, Between the X-S20 and the X-S10 is there any difference in the build quality anywhere on the camera? / Many thanks
Thanks for the comment. No, the build quality is pretty much identical
Hope the bigger battery triclles down to the next refresh of XE4 & XT30 ii successors
Yep, you would hope so, it makes an absolutely huge difference
HI Andy, absolutely love the Chanel and work that you do. Just a question, have you ever thought about shooting and running a workshop in New Zealand?
Thanks for the comment, glad you enjoy the videos. I’d love to run workshop in NZ and hope to put one together at one point.
@@AndyMumford thanks for your reply. I have heard that the South Island is spectacular. I’ve never been to NZ and would love to do one of your workshops there.
What would be the best lens choice for x-s20 while travelling? I can carry maximum 2 lenses. Please guide. Thank you.
That depends entirely on how you prefer to shoot and what you expect to be shooting. Wide, mid range, tele? If it were me I'd say 10-24 and 55-200, but other people might prefer the mid range like a 16-80 and 70-300
Thanks for the time put in your review!
Im a Canon owner (R5) and i love that camera, however... as i dont need to explain to you, its chunky even only with something of a 24-105 f4L
So i noticed that i tended to only carry it with me when i deliberately go out for shooting, but not anymore on a casual walk, especially when i travel somewhere (say to meet friends) and then we go on a spontaneous walk.
I don't know Fuji's plans, but the rumours are usually pretty accurate and so it's highly unlikely that there'll be an upgrade of the XT30II this year
@@AndyMumford Andy, thanks for your thoughts. Much appreciated.
Thank you for a great video! Do you find that pictures taken with the XT-5 are better then the xs-20?
What do you mean better? The XT5 has more resolution, but I'd say the XS20 has slightly less noise at higher ISO
I no longer have the camera (I just borrowed it for the review) so I can't say for sure, but I'm pretty sure it's the same as the XS10
5:40 what do you mean? You've got 5 pages of settings for the left dial, including ISO. Same as on the X-S10.
Apologies for the cut/paste reply:
It's entirely possible.
@@AndyMumford no apology needed, keep up the good work! I admire the high quality of your videos. :)
5:40 -- You can alter ISO using the left top dial. Just scroll through the options. There's 5 pages. Hope you find it :)
This took me a while to work out, it's not super obvious that there's more pages of options. I believe you have to scroll UP from the default page it lands you on. Being able to set this is a bit of a game changer, I rarely change/use different film Sims.
Thanks for the video, was the canyon like place in Sintra?
Thanks for the comment. The canyon is a relative secret and very few people outside of climbers and hikers know about it. It's in Arrabida (it's actually called the Fenda da Arrabida) and it's right behind the beach there. It's a short, steep hike up, and the trial isn't well marked, but it's a stunning place to go
Any thoughts on the overheating issue when shooting video, and does also overheat when taking photos?
Ive not really used it enough shooting video to encounter this
Great review.
Thanks for the comment, have fun with the XS20
yes you can ..
Hello, i think, you can change ISO on the left dial, like on the x-s10!?!
i sold my X-S10, can't remember why to be honest.
But that camera did make me miss fuji to the extent that i got myself a GFX
Thanks for the comment. I hope you're enjoying the GFX...I know I am
Good down to earth review
Thanks for the comment, glad you enjoyed the review
Lovely Lisbon Photos
It's a lovely city
Thanks for the comment. I XS series is great for video, that's what I use mine for and as their so good I can't see myself not having one with me.
Thanks!
Valentin
You will have problems only if exaggerate in post sharping
@@knio1 Thanks for the info!
Great review. Does it have the possibility to set auto iso exposure?
I’ve had no issues with the XS-20 AF in video.
How is the electronic viewfinder as compared to the x-t5 and the x-h2s? I’m nearsighted and have to wear glasses so this is a significant factor.
It does feel quite a bit smaller
I have the same camera, with the fan. Disappointed to discover that at 10 bit 4.2.2 in All-Intra, you can only record video up to 45 minutes continuously, in whatever mode (with a very fast SD card). And nothing to do with overheating. Not good enough.
It is possible to assign the iso to the top left control dial on the xs10 (that is how I am using it) so I am sure it is possible on the 20 too, but I remember it took me while to figure out how to do it.
5:30 With a firmware update you can now set the left dial to change the ISO, they must've gotten this feedback a lot.
I'm not sure, but I think this may always have been the case and I got it wrong in the video
Still can't get over how it looks... kind of hoping they would do the same thing but with a XT40 or XE5 version look but same specs.
For sure those cameras will come sooner or later, but the XS10 was a very big seller, so it makes sense that this comes first.
@@AndyMumford Many thanks for this!
no problem setting Fn-D to ISO on my X-S10.
Interested in this to replace my XT2
It's a decent upgrade if you don't mind switching from the analogue dials of the XT2 and you don't mind the flip around screen
@@AndyMumford I also have an Olympus OMD EM1 II so the dials will be no problem
I got X-E4 and i'd love to upgrade but i think i'll hold of for A7C II.
X-E4 is a lovely camera. I highly doubt there'll be an upgrade for it this year though
Hmm, good question. I'm sorry but that wasn't something I tried and I no longer have the camera. Apologies
@@AndyMumford no worries. I just saw the review on the Fuji Guys Channel and it appears that it does allow custom video modes just like the X-H2s. They show it at about the 5:10 mark.
thx for that awesome review. Is it weathersealed ?
@@grantnewton5705 thx grant. I think i will Stick with the t5 then.
Im beginner and wanting to get into into photography. Which camera do you recommend xt-30 ii or the xs20 or xs10.
They will all produce very similar images, so it really depends on which controls you prefer, which you like using more, and how important video is to you
Very nice content
Thanks so much for the comment 🙏
@@AndyMumford Thank You, that’s good to know.

You can set the left dial to ISO on the X-S10 so I'd imagine this would carry over
@@AndyMumford your video probably already answered that - I have the X-S10 and, at first, did not thought that I could set the left dial for ISO, since there is no option on the screen.
Cheers. 😊
Would this camera be good for shooting weddings?
Yep
Is there a way to set the unmarked dials to a specific function in ALL shooting modes? I find it far from intuitive if dials change function depending on whether you're shooting M or A.
