    NOTE: I said "X-S10" once or twice when I meant to say "X-S20". That's what happens when you edit all night (for two nights straight)! But any reference to new features I mention obviously has to do with the X-S20! Cheers! 👍

    A huge feature that wasn't mentioned in this video that can be absolutely huge for some creators is the fact that you can record external BRAW or ProRes RAW from this camera. That's a big deal for this price range with that kind of capability. I'm really curious if that'll have any effect on record times for overheating as the camera isn't writing anything to a small SD card.

Hearing more about BRAW and ProRes RAW, as they weren’t directly mentioned, would’ve been nice to hear more about, specifically for overheating times. But with the very limited time Chris had, totally understand not doing that, especially if he doesn’t have an Atomos on hand.

    Thanks. The most in-depth review I've seen so far. I don't shoot video but I have had a TON of great photographs from the X-S10. With the improvements, I just may trade in my X-H2.
    The SIZE of the X-S10/20 is my main attraction. When I have it in my hands, I just feel good. Holding the X-H2 for a while when waiting for birds to land on the feeder, and you notice the weight.
    The X-S line packs a good punch anyway. This may be a game-changer for a lot of folks.

    As someone looking to upgrade from the X-T3 for video purposes, the X-S20 is kinda perfect. I wanted to go the X-H2s route but saving up is tough, and for what I shoot and how I shoot, the X-S20 might be a great way to save some money but not skimp on the video improvements. Fuji might have cannibalized themselves for those who don't want to spend Sony money for a good hybrid shooter. I don't do relay recording, I don't need internal RAW and the highest bitrate I ever care to use is 200 mbs, well within SD card capability.

    • @paulhancock
      @paulhancock Год назад +1

      I literally just left a comment on the same lines. I've never upgraded my X-T3 either but for so many reasons, this looks like the sweet spot and makes the X-H2 a waste of money for my needs. It's an awesome release.

      be aware of the loss of weather sealing and dual slot, some reviewers say that it feels a bit plasticky.. I just switched to XT3 instead of the X-S10, but I don't see the reasons in going with the X-S20 while the XT4 exists

    • @thez28camaroman
      @thez28camaroman Год назад +3

      @@andreacristoforetti2061 The X-T4 has a 30 minute record limit, which is a nonstarter for an "upgrade". Coupled with the smaller grip, older processor, worse battery life, worse autofocus, lack of open gate mode as well as many video-centric features specific to the X-S20, and the X-T4 really makes no sense.

    • @thez28camaroman
      @thez28camaroman Год назад +1

      @Pepe Pupu I know. What I meant was I don't have a need for a CF Express slot found on the X-H2/X-H2s. I wouldn't take advantage of 720mbs 422 Pro Res, for example.

      @lenzyruffin Год назад +6

      I''m with you. I own an XH2s and I see too many features in this XS20 that do not exist in the XH2s. I don't think it's selfish to expect a brand new flagship camera to have the bells and whistles that a camera that's $1000 less and came out less than a year later has. I expect they will add some or all of these features via firmware rather than repeat the mistake they made with the XH1 when they released the XT3 soon after and it had better specs. The XH series can't take another hit like that.
      I was planning to buy two more XH2s for three-camera long format interviews, but if the XS20 does unlimited 4K recording, I'll just buy two of those. If there's no recording limit on the XS20, for my needs, there would be no difference between the XS20 and the XH2s.
      Really glad to see them innovating at a lower price point, but they can't leave customers of their flagship camera wondering what we paid an extra grand for. One of those "it's no longer the same camera you bought" old school Fuji firmware updates better be coming for the XH2s.

This s-x20 looks really good for hybrid shooters and Fujifilm is targeting a new type of users like content creators who want to take an extra step for being more professional. With their work. I think this camera is really well balanced in between a x-t and a x-h model getting the best of both worlds in a cheaper and smaller body

  • @MarcioK
    @MarcioK Год назад +5

    Great first look, Chris. Hope that you could get another unit for a more detailed test.
    I'm a X-S10 user and this one looks to solve all my biggest gripes with it - bigger battery (the X-S10 in Boost mode just CHEWS batteries, more than any other camera that I had), better AF (face / eye detect is unusable in X-S10 with more than one person in the frame, the focus spot goes nuts) and IBIS (still want to see if Fuji finally makes a better IBIS for video - for stills is great, but for videos it always "fight" with the start of a pan, specially a little one; is a behaviour that I saw even in the newest models).
    A bit larger EVF and some more controls (and yes, a pressable dial) would be perfect, but are not deal breakers one.
    Still want to see real world tests to see if I upgrade - after all, it is a sizeable price difference.
    Thanks again!

    Very interesting! I love my X-S10 and was waiting to see what direction they'd take with the X-S20. Looks like there's a LOT to talk about in terms of specs compared to the X-S10 thanks to the new processor and battery. I also think it's good that they're leaning into the hybrid/content creator angle with this body as some of the other manufacturers are doing. The X-S10 established that the X-S line has different DNA than the X-T cameras, but there wasn't a ton about the 10 aside from the PASM dial to differentiate it from, say, an X-T30.
    As a macro shooter... Insect detection?! INTERESTING.

    The reason that S20 doesn't have the 4KHQ mode is exactly like you said, the 26mp sensor, the 4K footage is by default oversampled and downsampled from 6.2K to 4K. It may even have slightly better DR than 4KHQ in X-T5 as T5 can't utilize the entire sensor for 4KHQ, not to mention less rolling shutter delay for S20 as well.

Do you think X-S20 is a good option for beginning content creator or it is better to save a little bit more money and invest for example in X-H2S, which allow user to go a little bit more proffesional when gaining experience with photo and video. I think that FujiFilm packed X-S20 with so many great features, but it is still just a small, amateur and entry level camera. After 1 or 2 years Fuji will probably release X-S30 with stacked sensor and there will be again need for upgrade, but for example X-H2S can easily serve well for the next few years with great performace. I'm sick of the XT4 wobbly images with wide angle lenses with movement and the way the IBIS constantly fights movement, creating jerks in the video. I've switched it off now. It's easier to correct hand shake in post. 😢
    Wonder if the X-S20 has improved on this?

    Hi, thanks for your detailed reviews, very helpful! This looks like a very compelling little camera; I am currently in the market for a second Fuji Body mostly for video. One thing that seems to be missing (compared to my X-T3) is the focus mode switch on the front, because I often change from AF-M to AF-C during video shooting. Have you found a way to toggle AF modes while rolling? Thanks!

    My X-S20 arrived today. It's better than my X-S10. I bought it because of its convenient small size combined with recent Fuji tech. With the small 35mm f2 lens, it will be a good everyday camera. I have some recent higher-end Fuji cameras but the X-S20 fits nicely into the lineup. My only reservation so far is that I got a heat warning while setting up the camera. That was unexpected. But I switched the heat warning setting from Standard to High and will see how that goes. NOTE that I shoot stills, not video. By the way, the camera was made in Indonesia.

      Hi I am interested in your new tests as I have tested a X-S20 during a Fuji X Series tour during 1h taking only photos with no burst and after 30 minutes I got the high temperature warning which scares me. I don't know wether it was settled on standard or high during the test. The temperature outside was 26 Celsius degrees not that high and I have taken almost 200 photos in hour.

    Hi, I am like many others considering the X-S20 or the X-T5. I’ll be using it mainly for photography: portraits, street and some action sports like soccer and indoor gymnastics. If the price of X-S20+18-55 and X-T5+16-80 is exactly the same? Which one would you go for? Thanks

    I'm still adjusting to my x-s10 I bought a week ago. Would I have gotten the x-s20 if I have known? Probably not. Budget was one of the biggest things for me, which is why I got my x-s10 for $800 used, 2014 shutter count. I could not afford a new x-s20. However, maybe the prices on used x-s10's would have been better if this came out sooner.

    This is an amazing camera for the money and as a Lumix S5ii owner, Lumix better watch out. They are about to charge owners $200 for external prores. The camera only has Long Gop internally too.
    The X-S20 is an absolute powerhouse, ticking almost every box. I had a feeling fuji would do this when the other "entry level" cameras were discontinued.
    Minor Grips
    No WR
    Only 2.6mp viewfinder
    8fps mechanical shutter
    1/4000 max mechanical shutter
    Other than that, its superb and I pre-ordered as I so miss my X-S10 after selling it. I may even ditch my Z-V1
    Great video as always!

      Interesting that you use an S5ii and also consider this camera... Would love to know why? Also, how do you find handling 2 different systems?
      I'm an XT4 user but thinking of buying a second body so I can use 2 different lenses at events quickly and as a backup. Strongly considering the S5ii as the IBIS for handheld video on XT4 is awful at times. Would be worried that the X-S20 has the same issues and know the S5ii wouldn't.

    • @NatsWright
      @NatsWright Год назад

      @@bsw78 The main reason for the X-S20 is a second fuji body, that is super compact for hiking. I do take my S5ii, but the lenses are heavy! However the S5ii is very sharp for photography and has great dynamic range. Its a shame it lacks All-I for video as this is easier to edit than LonGop too.
      The X-S20 is smaller, lighter, has better video codec options, plus includes raw via hdmi. The S5 has better stability and in full frame video modes, better dynamic range.
      I can also vlog better with the much smaller and lighter X-S20, the S5ii is quite heavy!
      Hope this explains things somwhat

    At this point Pal2 bhai, you are as close to the official RUclips representative of Fuji as we are likely to get, so we definitely can understand Fuji sending you this camera. Hopefully it'll end up in your kit some day, seems like the perfect camera for your channel work (or RUclips channel work in general). It fixes all my personal niggles with the Fuji X-S10, particularly the 8-bit codecs, which got me to choose the X-T3 over the X-S10.

    Fantastic review, especially given the time constraint with the product. A lot to like here! I notice it does Blackmagic raw, too, like the other 5th gen cameras and for me, this is a compelling reason to replace my X-T4 here in the studio as a desk cam. That way my X-T4 can go dedicated photo-only mode! That also has the annoyance of the cables blocking the screen and right-angle cables have helped there. Would be nice to see someone come out with a combined micro-HDMI & usb-c mini "block" that seals the area (rip off those silly excuses for doors!) and routes the ports to the top or bottom!

    with the X-S20 we've seen a huge jump in capabilities from what the X-S10 was able to do, especially in video. That unfortunately was followed by a pretty steep price increase.
    I don't really care about the lack of double card slots, I mean most people that would buy it don't really need it anyway, however with that price increase I would have loved to see the addition of weather sealing, especially for a vlogging camera that you're expected to take outside a lot. I think that would have made the price increase pill easier to swallow.
    I'm hoping for the X-T40 to keep the small body of the X-T30, add the IBIS from the X-S10/20 and have similar specs as the X-S20, with a smaller battery maybe at the same price point the X-S10 was at. Maybe with some features removed (like open gate recording or K resolution in video which not everybody needs for sure). That's be a very nice all rounder camera with a better pricing.
    if it does not have IBIS it would be a dud in my opinion as I would rather wait for the X-E5 or spend a little more and get the X-S20

    Please correct me if I'm wrong, but if it has the same sensor as the X-T4 then the sensor remains the same from the X-S10. I have the X-S10 and I've been very happy with it for video and as a travel stills camera.

    This is a very smart move by fuji. I can appreciate the xpro3 was positioned to entice people from the growing popularity of film, but it failed to recognise film shooters want the film, not the camera. Sticking to an optimised digital user base is a smarter move.

    Greetings and thanks for this quick guide -- this is one of the reviews that encouraged me to switch from X-T4 to X-S20. One question -- have you encountered any firmware bugs in custom modes on your X-S20? I have a strange experience with them. The C1 and C2 are set for photo presets in my case while C3 and C4 custom modes are set for video presets with different resolutions and frame rates. The control is all manual of course -- no aperture/SS/ISO priorities. The front dial is set to changing SS. Here's the thing -- when i set the mode dial to C3 or C4 and then switch the camera on, everything works fine. But if the camera is set to C1 and is switched on, when I turn the dial from C1 to C3 or C4, then the SS number is automatically set to the same number as the mode fps (twice lower then it should be) and the front dial that should change the SS stops working -- no matter how I turn it, the SS remains the same. If I mingle in the menu and then return in shooting mode, the front SS dial starts working again, but if I switch between C-presets, the problem returns. I thought it was a bug and updated to the latest 1.11 firmware, but the problem remains. So it got me thinking -- maybe it's not a bug, but I am missing some crucial settings that is buried somewhere in the menu. Min SS in movie mode perhaps. Have you encountered something like that?

My question to you is how come i cannot record 4K signals with my X-H2, x-H2s, and X-S10? There is not option in the menu system anymore to direct 4K signals to HDMI. Am I missing something?

    Hi Chris, thanks so much for that great review. I always enjoy your particular style how you manage the balance of not being biased and being keeping the distance to the manufacturer. When I have a closer comparison look between my X-S10 and the X-T5 speaking of size there is not much of a difference between the both. The X-s20 comes with the larger battery but not with the larger sensor. The IBIS „just“ gives you one more f-stop compared to the X-S 10. Pricingwise there are just 400$ between the both. Is then the X-S20 really the choice when you want to upgrade or shouldn‘t the X-T5 rather be concerned? Is the limited amount of enhancements realy worth the Price? I have a bit of a feeling that the X-s20 is a bit overpriced…

    • @ianroe1076

      I think this camera and the XT5 are too different to be considered against each other as superior or inferior. This camera is essentially a budget XH2 with a lower resolution sensor, no weather sealing, a single SD card slot, and generally lower video specs. The XT5 has the higher resolution sensor, weather sealing, and two SD card slots, but ergonomically is very different. While the XT5 has some advantages for durability and resolution, I think which one you choose will come more down to preferred ergonomics and emphasis of video-oriented features.

    I returned one piece to the dealer today. Unfortunately I have a bad experience with overheating of the X-S20, the camera can't take more than 20 photos, then a warning pops up: the camera is close to the standard temperature limit. The overheating occurred repeatedly, even when formatting the card. Too bad, otherwise I really liked the camera!

    Thanks for your review...almost convinces me to go with an S20. After the X-T1, I have always stuck with the smaller, less expensive models, X-T20, X-T30, and X-S10 (and X-H1 when it was on fire sale!). But why or why can't Fuji use an eye piece like the X-T3-5 and X-H series on these cameras. Why no option for an eye cup? With the increased price of the X-S20, I think I'm going to finally break down and move back to the higher end, in this case an X-T5. For $400 difference, the increased resolution and better eye piece is worth it. I'll be sad to lose the grip, but like my other X-T cameras, I've always been able to find a L-bracket with improved grip that at the same time gives me a nice sort of built in Arca-Swiss mount. Please Fuji...think about using the same or similar eye piece with an eye cup on all the camera lines.
    And why go with the less expensive line...because with today's technology advances, and Fuji giving up their commitment to upgrading old camera firmware, I know I'll always want a new camera every few years. :(
