Seeing both a string of new APS-C bodies as well as a bunch of new APS-C lenses across multiple mounts is really making me wonder if I still want to lug around my A7IV setup. @@arvidjohansson3120 I totally agree, but if you are looking for a compact APS-C body what are your options? All 4 cameras in this category, Sony a6700, Fuji X-S20, Canon R7 (which for me doesn't fit in the compact category) and Nikon Z50, use the same viewfinder. So does the OM-5. You have to get into the larger Fuji bodies, X-T5 and X-H2 to get a better VF., and those both significantly heavier, especially the X-H bodies. For me, bottom line is, the A6700 is a reasonable upgrade over the A6600, but not what I was hoping for. It's only a "flagship" because there is nothing better in the Sony APS-C lineup.

    In case anyone is wondering about the wobbles from other reviewers a lot of them were using the new 8mm that fuji also sent them to test. I’m guessing the wobbles in other videos were based on the ultra wide lens and not the camera. The 10-24 does the same thing at 10mm, both versions of it. Going to 12-14mm seems to fix this issue. So you should be good with the 10-24 at 12+ or with the 16mm prime (though still a little bit too close to my face for my comfort but some people like it) if they made a 12, 13 or 14mm prime ( a new one) it would be a nice alternative too.

    I've got the X-S10 so not much reason to upgrade. The X-S10/S20 are superb cameras. I wish the EVF was bigger, but I find increasing brightness helps mitigate small EVF issues. They do lack a little character compared to the X-T1, X-T3, X-T30, X-E2 I've owned. I use my X-S10 for my personal photography, and for work video shooting - and it's great for both.

    • @DigiDriftZone
      @DigiDriftZone Год назад +5

      I have both an X-S10 and I replaced my X-T3 with an X-S20. The reasons I love my X-20 vs the X-S10 are:
      1. No more corner wobbling in video with wide lenses - that one is enough right there.
      2. Battery life is MUCH better, 2 hours video recording on 1 battery - vs something like 30 min on the X-S10. No more battery anxiety, or having to swap batteries mid take or while walking around on holiday.
      3. Autofocus is MUCH better, I can point it at my cats and it just locks on to their eyes, heads and bodies (depending on what's visible). Same for face/eye, you can turn around and it will latch on to the back of your head, your face doesn't need to be visible, I can actually trust it now. It still sucks for any object it can't track/recognise, but baby steps, there's no tap to track either still :(
      4. H.265 10bit 4:2:2 is night and day vs the H.264 8bit 4:2:0, you can finally recover highlights/shadows in FLOG2 and get 14 stops dynamic range, it's amazing and actually slightly better than the X-H2!
      5. 6.2k open gate means you can crop your video for Instagram and RUclips (arguable a lot more useful than the 8K in the X-H2, it's like a baby X-H2S).
      6. 4k60p for much better b-roll than 4k30.
      7. Extra stop of IBIS is nice.
      8. LCD is way better, I was quite shocked by the improvement - I wasn't expecting it to be so pronounced.
      I sold the X-T3 and not the X-S10 because: no IBIS, bigger/heavier, terrible hand grip, I prefer an articulating screen, missing some software features (e.g. Auto ISO doesn't show you the value until AFTER you've taken the shot, why!?), etc - but it is a beautiful camera I have to say. Might get an X-T1 one just to keep on the shelf :)
      I agree with you, the EVF on the 2018 X-T3 is WAY better than the 2023 X-S20, come on Fuji!

      I decided to jump to the ZV-E1 which ended up being cheaper with a few lenses and the results are night and day, I recorded a video about it here: ruclips.net/video/aJYSz4mK95Y/видео.html - despite just 12MP I'm also getting much better photos because of the better dynamic range and low light performance, allowing me to crank up the shutter and still get better results at ISO50,000 than Fuji provides with ISO3200.

    When I handled the XS-10, I found it felt quite plasticky. I guess that's what they need to do to minimize weight. Still, with this glowing review I might want to give the XS-20 a shot. I have never owned a Fuji camera but have always been quite interested in them. Really appreciate the review. (Irregardless?)

      @DigiDriftZone Год назад +1

      I own both and the X-S20 does feel a tiny bit less plasticky, it's a softer material (or could just be the age difference). The buttons are slightly clickier on the X-S20, the half shutter press on the X-S20 feels like the full press on the X-S10 (so much so I keep failing to take a photo not realising I need to press harder!), but there's not much between them to be honest. Cameras like the X-T3 look/feel a bit more special, but I always gravitated to the X-S10 for its compact size and ease of use. With that said, the X-S10 still looks/feels much more premium than the Sony A6xxx series.

      I have a used x-t30 and x-t4. I’m very tempted to trade the x-t4 for the x-s20. I know I have 2 card slots (it’s never been an issue having one previously so no big deal) and weather sealing which the x-s20 doesn’t have but I find the x-t4 quite heavy for the size of grip. It’s not the weight as a stand alone but the carry weight with such a small grip can be uncomfortable after a while whereas the x-s20 has a great sized grip. I know image quality will be great but I’m very conflicted as I don’t want to regret it. Unfortunately the camera shop isn’t hiring any atm to get a good feel for it. I would like to do small amounts of video but listening to people talk about video is as understandable for me as a foreign language but I get the idea that it’s good for video 😂 I was also waiting for this review and it didn’t disappoint, thanks.

    The things swaying me to the Sony are no crop in 4k60 / FHD240p (why add a crop Fuji!), much better video AF, catalyst (for some awesome post processing options), weather sealing (I don't film in the rain but got rained on several times and was scared for my X-S10), 4K120p (even with the huge 1.63x crop), higher ISO range (better in low light?), the ISO for SLOG3 Is 800 instead of 1250 on the Fuji FLOG2 (less noisy video?), amazing in body fixes for lens breathing and other lens defects (can't find any info on in body fixed on the Fuji?), I'm finding the exact same lenses are 20-30% cheaper in E-mount vs X-mount.
    The things swaying me to the Fuji is the open gate 6.2k (great for instagram and RUclips cropping), no overheating in video, better IBIS (on paper anyway, I can't find a side by side video test), 4k60 USB webcam (single USB cable for power / external recording with film sims, very cool!), better LCD screen, joystick is super handy, fuji colours and film simulations are awesome to have, some unique great lenses, many years of meaningful firmware updates (Sony are notorious for neglecting cameras after release).

      You put together a very good comparison for video. Fujifilm does offer lens corrections for distortion and vignetting but the only lens I'm aware of that gets breathing correction from the camera is the 18-120 video lens. Of course the MKX lenses are parfocal and all around corrected.
      Not sure how well the Sony corrections work in real life and how much you actually use the high frame rate options but you can find out for yourself by renting.

    • @DigiDriftZone
      @DigiDriftZone Год назад +1

      @@problemat1que That's interesting about the Fuji in body lens corrections - is that just for photos or for video too?- I cannot find any info on this! - I was looking more into the Sony one and you need to have specific super expensive Sony GM lenses to get focus breathing correction, so that limits the usefulness massively. For Fuji, I assume any lens correction is only done for Fuji lenses? - But the focus breathing on those F2 Fuji primes is just horrendeous and I've not been able to correct this in post in Da Vinci or Final Cut - I would like to keep my kit as small/light as possible so I'm avoiding the MKX lenses. I also find at least the Final Cut video stabilisation is simply unusable with Fuji footage (haven't tried any other editors).
      I don't use high frame rate much to be honest, it's a nice to have. But weather sealing, no crop in 4k, much better AF, catalyst for hand held video with motion, bigger ISO range for low light use and lower base ISO in SLOG3 vs FLOG2 could be significant (not sure how significant 800 vs 1250 base ISO is though, would love to see a comparison). Also, once you add the Tamron 11-20 F2.8, Sigma 18-50 F2.8 and Viltrox 13mm F1.3, the Sony A6700 is a good 20%+ cheaper than the Fuji, because the X-Mount versions of these lenses are a lot more expensive (both new and second hand).

They've seen a lot of firmware updates, but I can't really say anything that substantial, the autofocus went from unusable, to slightly better over 2 years of updates, but still not at the level the A6600 shipped with originally. The new XApp is garbage too and it was probably cheaper for them to support a single app for all cameras, than to maintain the old app - what would you say got better that improved your Fuji camera beyond what Sony had without updates?
      A lot of Sony shooters complain that Sony isn't bringing features through firmware updates, but nor is Fuji. There's loads of "bug fixes" but most of the time I can't even tell what's changed. The X-S10 isn't getting animal subject detection, or 10bit, or even the new film simulation. Nothing of marketable value is being added from what I can tell which is a shame.

      Pretty sure lens corrections apply universally to jpg and video (except raw video of course which by definition doesn't get any corrections baked in except in the metadata that some processing software will use to apply corrections when you load the file).

    I hope the next XS30 gets rid of the "filter" on the PSAM dial and adds more Custom options, or you can make dial like sony a6700 and make a separate custom dial or entire PSAM dial in video or still

      I'm jealous of Sony's way of handling this with the Photo, Video and S&Q dial below the custom dial, so clever and doubles your custom modes.

    IBIS for vlogging would not be useable IMO, but fine if you simply stop walking. Looks like a nice camera!

    Thanks. Great review. Just having my first look at fujifilm cameras via an X-T200 which a friend has asked me how to use it.There are so many good cameras theses days but for the average newbie they are a bit daunting.

    Finally, what a great pleasure to see this review, especially with a6700 coming out. This review will definitely help me to choose between these 2 that I have been waiting for a while
    I really can't wait to watch the direct head-to-head comparison between the 3 competitors! they are similar in price, different in features and most importantly, I would hope that lense selection is taken into account in the coming video!

      For what it's worth, I prefer Fujifilm bodies (joystick, buttons, dials, great experience) but in addition to their lenses I also mount Canon SLR lenses with a Fringer adapter. They are cheap for focal lengths I don't use all the time, and I can fit a Fuji teleconverter between the camera and the adapter, which doubles the focal lengths available to me.

      @@problemat1que Im personally leaning towards fuji as well. It gives more bang for the buck compared to Sony A6700 (which is in my opinion a year too late). Canon bodies are just too crippled by their lense selections.

      The a6700 is more expensive at MSRP though

    • @DigiDriftZone
      @DigiDriftZone Год назад +1

      @@athmaid Yes, but third party lenses are cheaper in E-Mount vs X-Mount. If you are getting a few lenses like the 11-20mm F2.8 Tamron, 18-50mm F2.8 Sigma, 13mm F1.3 Viltrox, etc the total price with lenses is around 20%+ less with the Sony. Something to bear in mind. Also second hand lenses are far more readily available for E-Mount.

    I feel that it may be a tempting upgrade from my XT3... Just the weather sealing... I'm not keen on the 40MP sensor... and prefer to shoot fixed aperture, auto iso and play with exposure compensation to align to the left and have the custom modes... Tempting...

    If you are planning to shoot a short film or any serious film look videos, then DCI 4K is required. So in my opinion, the below points must be satisfied for a true video camera -
    - DCI 4K internal recording
    - 4:2:2 internal recording
    - ProRes and BRAW recording
    - Shooting in Log profile
    - True 24p shooting
    - In-body stabilization
    - Subject and eye detection in Auto focus +
    Can Sony a6700 meet these points? I doubt. So X-S20 is a king at this price point.

    That was a really enjoyable video. Feel’s like that since starting working with Petapixel really reignited your passion guys. Like you said on the podcast. I’m really not in the marked for any kind of new gear but if you continue like that your videos worth watching anyways.
    Though now that I think about it, when will you review the K3 III Monochrome? 😀

    I’m glad you guys finally got a copy of one. Fuji should have sent you one a long time ago.
    I definitely think this is the best fuji vlogging camera in its price range. With the xt5 no flip screen being a vlogging deal breaker and the xh2 and xh2S being the more expensive and professional option. But a little bit overkill for vlogging

    Love my X-S10 this seems like a brilliant upgrade. Though I don’t use the video features allot on mine they are already awesome when I do use them. The battery life isn’t great on the 10 so great to see that sorted. I just wish they had weather sealed it as that would have made it worth my time to upgrade.
