- NOTE: I have K&N filter already installed. If you have OEM filter see info below. Please read the service manual and use that as you primary guide. This video is just a loose guideline to get you familiar with the job so you know what to expect and hopefully inspires you to do your own maintenance and learn about your motorcycle.
Oil mesh filter does not need to be checked every time. See owners manual for service intervals. But it is not much extra work to do so there is no reason not to do it every time you change oil.

Dude, ur killing me with the quality!!!! This needs to get 8 million views on the crispiness alone.
Maybe I should stop? Don't want to be the douche that killed DNYC!
Hold Fast Films
No... No, you don't. Just something to think about. Maybe you can still make videos but just not post them publicly? Always an option. Lets keep this discussion going.
@@HoldFastFilms dont stop... I start learn from your video
Hold Fast, thank god the 821 community has you. These videos are priceless.
I'm glad they are helpful!
best videos for Ducati owner! looking forward to see more!
The coolest yet most detail oil change I've seen on RUclips. Greetings from Malaysia buddy ! 😊👍
Best camera angle ever for a Ducati oil change video. Nice job!
Absolutely love these videos! Have been searching for someone with mechanical experience / talent in relation to the Ducati Monster 821 so that I could possibly copy and do some basic maintenance and mods at home. Keep them coming!
Cheers man!
Dude your videos are awesome! Perfect quality! Keep them coming! Greetings from germany.

Nice video. I'm glad on the Hyper 821 I don't have to remove the exhaust haha.
Great video man! Im doing mine this weekend. 👍
Even though I don't own a Ducati, I really enjoyed this video! Thank you for the entertainment!
Thanks! What brings you here and what do you ride?

Hey man, that's awesome! I'm doing OK ... life just gets in the way of fun. You know how it goes. Take care and good luck with new adventures. You're gonna have the biggest grin on your face, first time you wind it up! I promise.
@@HoldFastFilms take care of your health and all the best my friend.
Very good video; this is the DESMO oil change, on the regular service you skip all those extra steps but just draining the oil and removing the old filter. fill it with new oil and new filter and is done.
Good stuff, man! thank you for making this video!
This is a fking great video. Just the simplicity and detailed makes it perfect.
Thank you so much for posting this video!! I have been looking for a how-to for my 821
You are more than welcome!
Great and clear video! Bye from Italy!
Hey man wonderful ! nice clean and clear video , that was so so helpful . Thank you so much.
Of course man. Glad it's helpful and thanks for watching!
Informative and entertaining. Very nicely done and I have never seen a plastic mesh oil filter like that before but that's pretty cool.
Leave it to freaking Italians haha
Thank you very much for the detailed instructions, especially on the filter under the exhaust pipe. :) Cheers!
Thanks man! Glad it's helpful. That's the only reason why I upload these.
Another great video. Well done!
+Neils400 Thanks man!
The allen key for the mesh filter is a 18mm, NOT 19mm... and the mesh filter Plug, a 14mm... but for the rest, you‘ve done a great job dude! 👍🏻 Thanks a lot
Great videos. Love it. You’re the best
Brilliant video. So good. Clear what to do.
I hit the like button and i'm going to subscribe: please put more videos for monster 821! Very nice work!
Thank you, it's been very usefull for me.
No more exaggerated priced Ducati service for oil change.
Yea no kidding! Hourly rates they charge are insane.
So much love for THE MACHINE!
Thanks for this man. You should be back to RUclips.
Nice music and great video quality..
Very nice tutorial, thank you very much.
Great job buddy, perfect video if you ask me. 👌
You're perfect, if you ask me.
Just a perfect video!! Thanks dude!
Glad it was helpful/enjoyable.

Great video. Torque specs on the reinstall of the bolts would have been sublime!
Safety Fast!
You sir saved lot of my money.
paypal him 10$ at least
Excellent video! Thanks!
You are welcome!
Muy claro, muchas gracias por compartir!
Great job explaining everything! This applies well to my scrambler. A+
Cool deal man!
Thanks for the information video
Awesome video quality man. Do you have any replacing the air filters?
Thank you for sharing this video. You helped save labor money . Lol
Thanks for the detailed video!!! I've been hoping someone would make this oil change video... 1200S oil change should be the same...
I think so. I thought I saw somewhere that mesh filter might be in a different location but don't quote me on that. There is a 1200 service manual pdf floating around. If you Google it, it should come up.
Gracias por tu vídeo me sirvió mucho 👍👍👍👍
gotta say, one of the best instructionals I've seen. No explosive intro with twerkable music, no "I'm gonna do this now" talk and holding hands before you do it - you just do it. "Show me don't tell me" format, love it! Subscribed. How do you like your Monster? It sounds awesome. I'll have to look through your videos and see what exhaust you have on it.
Hey man, thanks for the kind words! It's really appreciated.
Bike itself has been pretty good so far. It's definitely a bike that wants to go and go fast. Can be scary at time when you wind it up. It's no slouch that's for sure. I have Zard exhaust on it. Everyone has Termi's on and they were bit too expensive for my taste so didn't want to go that route. Nothing else appealed to me either so I settled on Zard. I'm not happy nor disappointed with Zard. It's not a bad exhaust but it was not loud enough for me. Made the exhaust note a little deeper than stock but not much louder. I wanted something that would make the bike sound like ... well ... a monster.
+Hold Fast Films makes sense. I've been looking at it just for a little bit recently. I love the looks and sound but I'm having a bit of a hard time with balancing my needs and wants. I am interested to sit on one at the dealer and see how it fits me. I'm 6'4" and cycle-ergo.com only goes so far. For the longest time I was in love with the Yamaha fj 09 but I saw a video of the 821 and a sc projects crt slip on and that's all I've been thinking about. Sounds like a monster. I'll have to send the link later. Keep up the good work!
Jesse Fretwell I guess depends on how long your legs are. I am 6'1" and I feel perfectly at home. Feels like there are few more inches of room so I would think you'd be OK but best way to know is to sit on one.
For sure. I'll have to check it out. Thanks!
+Jesse Fretwell any time.
Awesome 😍
Great video!!!
Can u do a video for installation of bar end mirrors??
Thank you a lot for the video!! What exhaust do you have on the bike?
Nice video!
I wonder the size of the allen for the oil mesh filter is 19mm as in the video or 17mm in the description?
Nice video! Would however recommend never to tighten the KN filters with a wrench as the induction welding has known to rip and leak. Just tighten tight by hand and just use a socket/wrench for removal.
Perfect!
It would be awesome if you did a video on bleeding the breaks!!
Let me start by saying thank you for the great video you posted. It is extremely helpful. Hope you will post more of them, I can certainly use the help...
Q: did you also used sealing compound for the magnetic oil plug after screwing back in?
Cheers
When I did the 600 mile service, I didn't have any sealant so I didn't use any. Didn't use the next time either and have not had any issues. I noticed that Ducati put some on there from the factory so if you have some, it would not hurt to seal it. Now that I have a whole tube, I might start using it.
How do you reset the oil change indicator?
Also how much oil?
Great video
Good work! Do you change the toothed belt alone?
Super bro
Thanks would not have known to check and clean the mesh filter.
You dont have to do it every time. Service manual should be linked in the video description and that has intervals.
hello have you ever done the "Desmo service"? Maybe you could have some video?
Oil mesh filter. 42Nm like in manual or by hand? Whats right??? Its big difference🤷🏻♂️thank You guys
Do we need to remove the exhaust every time we do oil change?. Thanks
Superb in quality and clarity
Kind words. Thanks!
Question. Do you need to replace the crush washers (in the 5mm and 12mm nuts ) and oil mesh gasket ?
Duc Nguyen I typically change crush washers every other time if I don't have one. I've never had a problem with it so that's up to you. Mesh didn't have one. Just an o-ring which I didn't change. I don't see a reason for that.
Hold Fast Films
Thanks. Service manual doesnt mention about replacing crush washers or O-ring gaskets. I just ordered a bunch of crush washers for my m821 (both 5mm and 12mm allen nuts) from amsducati anyway. They are quite cheap and often backorder on ducatiomaha, so may as well grab some extra when I can :).
Another thing. Service manual instructs to open the bottom 12mm allen nut beside the 5mm one but I dont see why. Any insight ?
Duc Nguyen That's the drain for mesh filter and you only have to do that if you are checking on it. You don't have to do it every oil change.
Is that center filter like a pre-filter? how often do you need to check it? Cheers
Could you make a similar video for the 2021 Ducati monster + 937?
What brand and size of torque wrench you used to complete this project?
Great video.... based on this i'm going to do my oil change but I see there is a comment about the size of hex keys actually required. Could the key sizes please be verified and the information updated if required? I think it's the 17/18mm key to remove the actual mesh strainer that is really in question. Thanks for making the video.
So it is OK to put the bike on a rear stand only? thought you would need to do front as well to keep it level?
Good afternoon, do you have any video replacing the radiator coolant cooling radiator? Ducatimonter821
Why do you not torque the mesh filter ? In the manual it says to torque it to 42 Nm , not judging tho i just wonder if there is a specific reason. Thanks a lot for this great video !
The service light can be just let it as is, does it goes off after a couple of km after you start up the motorcycle or it just stays there during all the ride.
Did they oil change yesterday, but ran into 2 problems: the midpipe just won't come out of the headers and the socket of my 18mm hex was too thick to fit into the oil mesh filter.
Solved these issues as follows:
If you have trouble removing the midpipe, remove the silencer first. If you've only got a thick socket with a 18mm hex insert pressed into it, knock it out of the socket and use it with a slim 17mm nut to reach the mesh oilfilter.
Great video - simple & clean! Question though, no crush washers?
I don't believe any of those had crush washers. Main oil drain may have had a washer but it definitely was not a crush washer.
Nice thank you
Thanks for the tip
You are welcome!
Bro u killt it
could you pleas make a video about the coolant change?
Thanks!
How much oil is needed to refil? Planning to do it myself? Do i need get the 4L?
Hi have you found a diag tool that can reset the service light?
What do you clean that mesh filter with?
Thanks for the video. The service manual is specifying to torque the mesh filter to 42Nm, which is a lot compared to other bolts. They tell to use grease as well but i’m not confident to put grease there (contact with oil?). Thanks
Exactly. I had the same question. So is 42 OK or not? Thank You👍
Just used this video to change the oil on my 2016 Monster 821. The 12mm oil mesh filter drain plug was on SUPER tight. It might feel weird when you are taking it off like you are stripping something but it will come off. I didn't have anyone to help support the bike but it finally gave. The oil mesh filter is 17mm NOT 19mm. Be careful on which 17mm allen you use as it may not fit through to be able to reach the 17mm part. I had to run out to the store and grab an actual 17mm allen key because the 17mm allen socket bit I had would not fit through. Also changed from the original Ducati oil filter to the K&N filter as it will be so much easier to take off next time with a socket.
Standard quality for Hold Fast = Awesome
Thanks dude. I wish i had your music skills though!
Thanks man :) !! Best wishes ;) ;)
Hi Hold Fast! I love the video and in double checking the service manual vs the video a couple of things caught me by surprise. On page 131 of the service manual it gives a ridiculous torque for the plastic mesh filter (you say tighten by hand only) and the bolt behind it is the same huge number (but it looks like you barely use the torque wrench at all)
Also, when cleaning the mesh filter and bolts what is the best way to clean this? I know it seems like a stupid question, but better safe than sorry.
The mesh filter is made of cheap plastic so I would not torque that at all. That's just a personal preference. You can just spray it with carb cleaner but anything will work. It doesn't have to be specific. Just make sure it is dry and free of lint and other debris before you put it back in.
Good Day will tge KN-153 work on my S4 Monster 2002?
And I forgot, it contains all the information required to do the job. Thank you very much.
Glad it was useful!
@@HoldFastFilms Do you still have the bike? I wonder. Your video was made 6 years ago. I bought mine in 2017.
what bike stand are you using
oil drain plug and oil mesh filter hex key 14mm?
If using a strap wrench, how do I know how much to tighten the filter.
GREAT JOB YOUR VIDEO'S, DO YOU HAVE ALSO A VIDEO CONCERNING SPARK PLUG CHANGE ? (HANS FROM THE NETHERLANDS)
WHY ARE YOU YELLING AT ME HANS FROM THE NETHERLANDS????? :p
Just kidding. I do not have a video but you can take a look at my air filter video to see how to lift the fuel tank. You don't need to take it off, just lift it enough to access the top/vertical spark plug. And then use the service manual (link is in the description of this video) to see how to access the bottom/horizontal one. There is not much to it really. Good luck.
Cool
Can you link me to a good toolset for these kinds of jobs
Sir, nice video! DO you really have to check the mesh filter for a yearly oil change maintenance? Thanks in advance.
Read the video description.
Hey awesome video again. What stand are you using and spools?
Just some cheap stuff from Amazon:
www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01721KF6I/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I guess they don't sell the spools there anymore so I don't have a link to them.
What year is the Ducati in the video?
Great video.. Keep it up..
Do we really need to remove the oil mesh filter unless we replace it?
First couple of oil changes, yes. After than, only periodic check is needed.
On 3:05 you´re saying the Oil Mesh Filter Plug needs a 17 mm allen. But in fact it is a 14 mm! Just like your video discription says. I just bought the wrong one. ;) great video anyways. thanks for that!
