With the internet age and social media everything seems to be an "image" of wealth, prestige or status rather than reality. It seems fairly easy to fall into the trap of envy and fear of not having what we need (although much of it often seems to be in category of wants rather than needs in America). The Lord has blessed me so abundantly and
Our God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all we ask or think” - Ephesians 3:20. Thank you Dr. Ortlund for this refreshing and edifying perspective and reminder.

This is one area which I recognized over the course of last year especially, with some things happening in my life, I really have to work on. It might not seem like envy at first, just wishing to have normal things other people have, and enjoy and take for granted, so naturally I want to have it too (I'm not even talking about material stuff) - but it quickly turns to misery and depression that is debilitating. Only envy causes this. I have so many things to be grateful for, yet I keep focusing on things I don't have...

    • @marianhreads

I relate to this a lot. Part of the problem is I think this concept of "normal" when in reality human experience is quite diverse, and even among those who have normal things, the grass is not always greener (e.g. hidden miseries, or other sufferings we don't see).

My life is sh*t and I'm trying to cope with it. Envy has been a consistent struggle I've had to deal with.
It comes mostly in the form of envying other people's talents and aptitudes that I don't have. Money and popularity don't phase me much, but I'm always comparing my God given strengths and aptitudes with others....and it doesn't usually end in a positive place.

A brother in Christ is not a stranger or a devil . As a stranger needs to build trust and a devil is to b abhored in end times as God does not make peace with Satan in end times. we are made in his likeness so in end times we must abhor wicked enemies. Scholars argue that we are not in end times and other scholars argue that since he has been gone, this whole period is end times. So since opinions about the bible always have two sides arguing , I can consider us in end times. Also does God not have envy towards Satan the ruler who reigns over the world? I believe the world is everything we see and learn and know once we get out of the womb so the universe and multiverses all riled by Satan. And it would make sense that God is jealous as he gave reigns over to Satan the only sign of his return is the bitter envious jealous racist Jonas burning under the hot sun under A withered leaf because his enemies took everything from him. As a Catholic, I really enjoy your videos explaining your beliefs to get a better understanding of how they are defined by a Protestant. I find that important as I know what it is like to be on the receiving end of our beliefs being defined outside what we actually believe. I watch your videos and think to myself, this is a Christian. Envy is such a good topic being something not mentioned that much with all the other topics out there.

      I'm more blessed than mary
      Proof = Luke 11:27-28
27 And it happened, as He spoke these things, that a certain woman from the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, “Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts which nursed You!”
28 But He said, “More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”

      Matthew 12:46-50

18 Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,

9)David messed up ( and he has the Holy Spirit),
      10)King Soloman messed up,
      11) Saul messed up and God regretted the decision (1 Samuel 15:10-11).

      Galatians 4:21-26
21 Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not hear the law? 22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons: the one by a bondwoman, the other by a freewoman. 23 But he who was of the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and he of the freewoman through promise, 24 which things are symbolic. For these are the two covenants: the one from Mount Sinai which gives birth to bondage, which is Hagar- 25 for this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and corresponds to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children- 26 but the Jerusalem above is free, which is the mother of us all.
Sarah is mother of all, Not mary
Also the Church has many name like Christians, Evangelists, Children of God, Believers, servents of God, bride of Christ, but not once the Church is called catholics
Changed the 10 commandments by deleting 2nd commandment, and dividing the 10th into 2 commandments. Also changing the real Saturday Sabbath to fake sunday sabbath.

I think I might be caught in the sin of envy, but I'm not sure. My spouses cheated last year, leading to a break up and him out 6 months ago. In the worst of the grieving process, any couple I would see, would give me deep pain that I was now single. I would think of people I know together 10 years, 20 years and it would amplify my own loneliness and singleness. I haven't felt it in months, but visiting my sister and how well she is doing again in her 21 year relationship lately, I felt that pang of lack again. There is no resentment or malice towards her or her spouse. They have worked hard and overcame much to be close as they are. Maybe it's just part of the grieving process, which is much better, but not always over for me? Please pray for me.

Is there a biblical difference between jealousy and envy, I wonder? Scripture speaks of jealousy as a sin too, but I am thinking there must be a particular use of this word in mind. For instance, would it be sinful for a wife to be jealous if she saw her husband be flirtatious with another woman? In this instance, she is hurt over what is hers (her husband) and not over something that is not hers.

@@anne.ominous then I don't see a problem, God intended sexual love to be possessive. In this case the focus is not on the adulterer/adulteress but the betraying spouse, expecting him/her to be yours only.

Theres 2 types of envy. The natural. And the malicious. Once we act upon anything more than that. It becomes fruad and pride. Sloth is a direct path to envy. And beliving in jesus/ god is a direct way to sloth.

/* In spite of what the bible says , a book made from trees, as my God hung on a tree I don't worship the tree but rather he who hung on the tree I do not worship the author of confusion although I'll read it and use it against the devils , play by their rules and use those rules against them. What does the bible say about exalting oneself? It says that he brings them low. And when people exalt themselves and the world exalts them as idols , do they not steal wives and cause envy?? Of course they do . There is no beating around the bush taking out envy or jealousy out of the equation when idols are exalted. How would you feel , if an idol slept with your wife and you saw a video of how excited she was with him in the bedroom ? Is it wrong to be human and feel rage and envy? Of course not. I say the only time one is in the wrong when being envious, is when your brother or best friend recieves a blessing as long as he didn't take that blessing from you then you should be happy for him. If the messiahs return is the embodiment of Jonas then expect an ordinary envious rageful man who envies his enemies that took everything from him even the power of being God. */

So a person starving to death, is sinning if they wish they were the person that had food? If this is Sin then this is cruel and non sensible.
I guess people are sinning in North Korea when they wish they could have freedom like all of us.
