The Difference Between Jealousy and Envy

  • If you’re wondering about the difference between jealousy and envy, Fr. Mike clears up the confusion in this video. Simply put, jealousy is not wanting to share something or someone you possess or hope to possess, and envy is resentment toward the possessions of someone else. There can be some intersecting of the two, because it is possible to have an excessive or distorted kind of jealousy that’s actually based in envy, but jealousy can be good while envy is always sinful.
This is an important distinction because on the one hand we have God who is jealous about us. Likewise, a husband and wife should be jealous about each other.
On the other hand, St. Augustine described envy as the diabolical sin, basing his reasoning on Scripture:
“through the devil’s envy death entered the world,
and those who belong to his party experience it” (Wisdom 2:24).
Worthy of note is the fact that good translations of the Bible translate 1 Corinthians 13:4 to say “love does not envy.”
Rather than allowing the blessings of others to sadden us, let us rejoice in them and our own.

Khelben Taylor, I love that you think that way! I myself have attended two of Fr Mike’s masses and have been absolutely in awe of his teachings. His home parish is actually in the University of Minnesota-Duluth, and has masses every day, either at his house, or on campus. If Duluth, Minnesota seems far for you, not to worry. He has been involved in many retreats around the country. I don’t know how far he stretches out, but I’m sure he’ll be in a city near you. God Bless!

This is why we need friendships and true friends. True love for and of others. When you don't, often you seek to fill that in any means necessary. You get envious of what others have. Weather it's stuff or other people. Rejoice in God and relish in the love of those God has given you. Then there will be no room for envy in your life. Pray for me to find true friends in my life

Everyone needs to hear this. ❤️ I can also say that when you pray to God to take your envy away, he instantly grants it. I remember when I was in elementary school, one of my friends had this super cute pencil case and even as a child, envy didn’t feel right to me. I wanted it to go away. So that night I prayed to God to take my envy away. Then for some reason, I believe that God is still guarding me against it today. So the moment you feel envious, just ask God to away it away and He will. 😉😊❤️

Envious people will destroy your possessions to keep you from having them, especially your relationship with someone. They know they can't and won't have it, but they will do everything in their power to tear two people apart. Sometimes the weakest link allows it to happen. So sad!!!!!

I'm reading Anna Karenina and quotes below made me search for the difference between jealousy and envy.
"In Karenin's soul, however, despite the complete and contemptuous indifference he thought he felt for his for his wife, there was one feeling left with regard to her: an objection to her being in a position to united unhindered with Vronsky, so making her crime advantageous to her" and "but another feeling had now taken the place of jealousy: it was a wish that his wife's guilty should meet with retribution."
And I appreciate your really helpful and to the point explanation. God bless!

Jealous: desire to posses something, which could be of someone's else or to guard something that one possesses or hopes to. Isn't always wrong.
Rooted in desire or could be rooted in greed.
Envy: sadness when someone else has something that I want. Rooted in resentment. Diabolical. Sadness at someone's gifts, joys, accomplishments, etc. Leads to destruction.

So good and clear, thank you ! I've always felt like I have never really understood what envy is really. To me it was a kind of resentment aimed towards destroying the good of the other - which I have rarely felt. But saying that envy is sadness when someone has what I lack, which I have felt very strongly before. How I have suffered from seeing other have what I have not, but I didn't know I felt envious. But I turned that destructive impulse towards myself, punishing myself, hurting myself, believing that I was unworthy of love and trapping myself in a resentful existence.
Also so good what you said that envy is one of the few sins that leads to no direct pleasure. It's really a continuous stream of sadness and resentment. It's really just a way to punish yourself or others, a destructive desire. I guess you can find some kind of pleasure in punishing yourself and others, but it does differ from other sins.

Jealousy causes one to want what someone else has, while envy doesn’t want someone else to have what one doesn’t!

  • @12mountain
    @12mountain 4 года назад +8

I’ve heard it described (in Catholic circles) a little differently.
I have heard it said that jealousy is seeing what somebody else has and wishing that you had that also, whereas envy is seeing what someone else has and wishing to take it from them and have it for yourself instead.
So let’s say you are single and you see a friend who has a beautiful spouse. The jealous version of you might say, “I wish I had a beautiful spouse; I am happy for my friend and his beautiful spouse, but I do wish that I were also married to a beautiful person,” whereas an envious version of you would say, “I wish I had a beautiful spouse; I wish I were married to my friend’s spouse, instead of him; why does he have that but I don’t? I deserve it as much or more than he does.”
Apologize for the off-the-top-of-my-head anecdote that might not be the perfect example, but hopefully it illustrates my point about what I’ve been taught regarding jealous vs. envy.
Fr. Mike I await your input on this! 😉

I've always had a hard definition of these two words and usually offer the following example: "Imagine two dogs, one of which has a bone; The dog with the bone is jealous of his bone, the dog without the bone is envious of the dog with the bone". But the way you phrase it in this video is far more kind and elegant. I'm an atheist but I must admit you guys sometimes come up with nicer ways of looking at the world.

Thank you so much for this video Fr. Mike. I think I've been struggling with envy since high school, and it destroyed my relationship with others. My then high school best friend and I were top students in our school but for some reasons one day I became envy at her success in both academic and personal life. I decided to leave the friendship without saying anything because I couldn't bear the feeling I had toward her. Even now and again, sometimes I found myself falling into the same trap of envy. It does nothing but undermining my own ability and my will to be better.

Fr. Mike, Glory Be to Jesus Christ!
My understanding of the difference between jealousy and envy, as a psychotherapist and may I say here not a Roman Catholic psychotherapist but a Ukrainian Catholic (Byzantine Rite) psychotherapist is that jealousy is usually about people, and interpersonal relationships, whereas envy is about the qualities or objects that another person possesses. So jealousy is about perhaps being envious of the quality or type of relationship you might want to have with another person that someone else already has and so you are jealous of the relationship that they have that you would like to have, whereas envy would be more like wanting to have the thing that they have: a nice car, nice house, great job, or some superior skill or talent that they have that you do not but wish you did.

This reminds me a lot of Matthew 20, the parable of the vineyard workers. The workers who worked for an hour and those who worked all day all got the same pay, and the workers who worked all day were INCREDIBLY frustrated. The owner of the vineyard then said "Are you envious because I am generous?" I came across that parable during a time when I would constantly ask, "God, why are you there for all these other people but You're not there for me? I'm praying, reading my bible, going to mass, etc., yet why are you blessing all these other people with friends, success, happiness, etc. but You're not doing the same for me?" But instead I should have been saying "I'm happy for those people that they have all those wonderful things. I'm happy for them that God has worked in their lives and bless them." Praise God for being generous to others, don't be envious of those people!

    1 John 4:16
And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.
    Deuteronomy 4:24
For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.

Thank you for the advice, I really struggle with this. I know it's evil, I refuse such thoughts, they're short, but they still keep coming.

Jealousy and envy go hand-in-hand equals covetousness .
