Had my Challenger 10 years and 165,000 km with zero issues, it's been incredibly reliable. Thought my previous Prado and Patrol were reliable, but the Challenger is in another league.
I have an 08 prado VX rhat I just love to pieces, if I was seeking to get a newer 'prado' like car, is there any replacement for the Toyota land cruiser prado? I genuinely love the 3.0 turbo diesel
Mine has 14,5 years and 260.xxx kms and no major engine issues. Just need regular yet routine maintenance and I need to replace my timing belt and suction control valve soon. I want to keep it as long as I can
i have a 2011 challenger,325000ks, brought it off my dad, he had it since 120000ks. its the exceed model, i tow my boat all over nz, it loves it. still can get 190kph
I had an MN Triton with the dreaded over heating issue. Oil and coolent mixing, block warped. My dealership in Campbelltown NSW no questions asked sorted a replacment block and re used the head. I just had to pay for the belts. My car had no service history because i did all the work and was long out of warrenty but tried my luck anyway and got a new block covered under mitsubishi.
Just a thing with the block machining issue, they can run fine until put under load. The test they apparently do is to run the engine at 3000rpm for 15 minutes. If it starts to overfill the overflow and bubbles, then it means it has the issue. Even with this issue, it will show no signs unless 'stressed', for example, towing, etc. I liked my 2.5l triton until i had this issue come up last week. I contacted Mitsubishi last week and didn’t hear back. The local dealer is giving the run around, saying they have to pull the engine apart before talking to Mitsubishi, then if its not going to be covered, I'd be stuck paying for the work, on top of having to fix the engine afternoon anyway. Which is amazing, considering they only have to do the stress test at 300rpm for the others I've read about being replaced. It seems very case by case on the replacement too, which is surprising, as it's a know factory fault. There's cases where very high km engines are replaced, years out of warranty. Then there's some with pretty low km's and newer model that get knocked back. I'm not saying it is, although it all comes across as Mitsubishi just did the bare minimum to hide the issue from owners, leaving them, or whoever buys them afterwards, with a ticking time bomb of an engine that costs $10-$15k to replace.
I had one for nearly 10 years. It had close to 300,000km by the time I sold it. It was brilliant off road, took me to the Cape, Simpson Desert, K'Gari, Victorian High Country, Steep Point and all round Australia. It wasn't without its issues though. All the issues were covered under warranty thankfully. Had 2 engines overheat, A/C stopped working a couple of times, 4WD wouldn't lock the front wheels (solenoid issue I believe).
Really, really honest and capable mid-size 4WD. More utilitarian than a Pajero or Prado, not a lot of interior polish or bells & whistles, but mechanically they're well-sorted, easy to work on and rugged. The 4WD system is a gem and the diesel never feels lacking for power. Agree the front seats aren't particularly comfortable or supportive on long journeys. My mum had one for a decade, doing the grey nomad thing, before selling it recently. We were aware of the head gasket issue, but hers never missed a beat. It's only been a few months, but she already regrets selling it.
It's a shame they were stuck with the 4D56 instead of the 4M41 from the era, and its a shame they were stuck with the Jatco 5 speed instead of the Aisin 4 or 5 speeds also used in Mitsubishi 4x4s at the time. These two things could've changed the PB/PC from being just a reasonable value off-roading option to a properly outstanding 4x4 wagon.
I've had one from new and all the issues that you reported I have had lol, great review as an owner I think that you nailed the accuracy ,i think they are a good thing when they run cheers
Had one, 2015 PC from new. Good until it wasnt. 3 engines replaced under warranty, first one at 85k km. Average for towing, hard going with a 1.6T camper on the back. Low range was almost a waste of time in the manual. During one of the engine replacements had a Pajero Sport loaner for 3 mths, much better vehicle in every way. Now have a Pajero.
Hell yeah finally a Challenger review! I've had mine for a while and put over 100,000kms on it. Second owner and still running strong. Bloody awesome cars.
omg, yes the turbo lag was horrendous, also the steering wheel does not straighten up after turning so you had to manually turn or counter steer after making a turn.
Wish these had a V8 like the Pajero Evo 2 concept. It's basically this car as a 2-door coupe SUV dakar machine. The 4.5L V8 was the one used in the first gen Hyundai Equus and the ultra rare Mitsubishi Proudia and Dignity.
@paulhoogeveen7353 Yup, that's the engine. With MPI, it would have fit well with the name and intended design of this car perfectly. Kind of like a first gen Porsche Cayenne S, which had it's own 4.5L V8 and was used for Transsyberia Rally. Here in UAE, we got the petrol and auto versions only. So 3.0L or 3.5L V6 and 4 speed auto....... Not exactly, Sporty, haha. There's way more normal Pajeros compared to these Pajero Sport models here as such. The normal Pajero had a 5 speed auto compared to these Sport models.
Hard to find unmodified and low kms now but if you can get one buy it. I owned a 09 one for a few years it was great, only issue was the a/c condenser shit itself.
This review is so accurate based on my PB Challenger which is now over 300,000km, just dealing with the balancing belt vibrations now! 😅 Love it to bits and will be gutted when I have to replace it!
Loved the one we had, Had it almost 18 years and only sold it when we got a new car and was running out of room on the drive. Only problem I had was it needed a new radiator. Times we went up and down the east coast of Australia(almost 300K) when we sold it cheap to a mate, And 5 years later still see it running around town. Downside, such a small fuel tank for a 3L V6 engine
I've always wondered how good these cars are as I see so many of them on the road. I'm surprised that most of the problems are down to servicing and if the recall work has been done or not. If you want challenging for audio try a pocket radio with road trains going past you lol 😂. Overall a genuinely interesting and surprising video that's up to your usual gold standard gents. Good work as always guys and look forward to Sunday's video as per usual 👍.
Used to own an PB XLS, it was good. Reliable, good value, super select system for 4wd on tarmac was a great feature too. The driver's seating position was terrible, seat comfort in general not good. Have a Prado 150 now, better in every way bar the boot space, but would happily recommend a Challenger if budget friendliness was a major factor...
It’s loud. Very loud in the cab. Worse with aggressive tyres. Even more so with a roof wrack. Lots of diesel rattle. Get rid of the aggressive tyres. Immediately quieter. Get rid of the roof wrack. Quieter again. And way better fuel economy. I reckon I’ve got mine sorted now. 11/100 is not bad for fuel. Changed out the tyres for quieter less aggressive tyres. Got rid of the roof wrack. That fixed the fuel and a lot of the noise. Mines done 198k and is on its second timing belt, radiator and battery. It drives well and it’s comfy and takes me to my favourite campgrounds. I’m happy.
My PB LS is 11 years old, only 165k but done a lot of that off road in the jarrah forest on unmaintained gravel 'tracks'. Never let me down, very surprised where it's taken me with some very anxious passengers! I had a lot of warranty issues I gotta say from Mitsubishi who just flat out refused to honour my extended warranty during Covid, (airbag light, turbo leak, harness issue, drivers electric window motor). The main reason I believe was they rebuilt their store and lost my original contract. Finally brought in my contract with proof of extended warranty and they begrudgingly fixed everything for free as they should have years earlier without a fuss. Otherwise ride on original shocks do need replacing. Everything else is fine however did replace terrible headlights for LEDs which are great. Better A/T tyres added are a must off roading. It's a manual so I'm thinking of keeping it for the long haul and want to put better shocks, engine mod and front diff lock (if I have some spare money)!!
Finally... tho I already rolled the dice and brought one just before the video was posted. I've had my 2015 challenger for 8 weeks and I love it. 80k on the clock great condition and cost just over 20k I'm very happy. Brought it for towing so would to hear more about the recommended mods
I got one of these at the tail end of covid when 2nd hand cars were waaay expensive. Got one with 100,000km, manual. Been a great car, good all rounders, and being a manual it gets around 9L/100k's. Put 60,000km on it and I havent had to think about it, goes well and never has any issues.
This has got to go down as one of the best episodes yet team, and not because of the subject matter. That train station voice-over was mint, the funky sunglasses scene, the wee Monty Python-esq hand pointer wand thingy, Jim's 'choke like Michael Hutchence' throwaway line and of course the fact he had to fuck it up at least once as evidenced in the out-takes. Well done! Oh the vehicle - great review too!
I've always liked the challenger it is underated and looks cool. While it is a great value proposition I think some of the drawbacks for me come from the poor factory suspension and just less bulletproof than some but I guess much of it can be managed with good maintenance. Whilst I appreciate you guys test what you can I do think the value equation takes a hit with the need for doing suspension whereas apart from a lack of clearance the Prado is more an out of the box winner from factory. I test drove one of these with 200,000 and a 2007 Prado 120 V6 with 320,000 on it and I went with the Prado just feels much more comfortable and solid
There is zero need for a Catch can. Especially when it can pressurise your engine and causes $1000’s worth of oil leaks. A little bit of oil mist will only get burnt up. If you have more than mist you have a blowby issue, that a catch can cant fix. The egr is the abrasive soot that needs to be dealt with.
I have a 2015 Challenger andits been awesome. The engine failed at 47k out of warranty but Mitsubishi came to the party and covered a nes engine as it is a known issue. Thats been the only issue, tows well, drives well, its not a Prado but for the money its amazing. Off road its as good as anything and the standard locking diffs are the bomb.
I have a 2015 challenger with leather, nice wheels, etc. Recently my wife and I started to look for a replacement car. I was annoyed because I couldn't find anything that was markedly better and justified the spending of big money to upgrade. The other big thing which stood out was cabin space. I am 6ft 4 and my son is tall and he fits easily behind my seat.
Currently owned a 2015 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport Dakar 4x2, the only down side I currently experience is the dull infotainment, planning to replace it with something more modern
Considered these last year when I was in the market for a 4by, the towbar setup is a bit tragic looking - although in retrospect, good for protecting the rear bumper. I don't think there was ever a recall for the airbag warning light, MM had it listed under a hot fix PB52-001, which is piss weak should be a recall lots of reports of people being fobbed off by the dealership. If you have details of a recall can you please post them. Great review, Cheers
If you can get a good condition, low k one.. go for it. They're not great on fuel, but super reliable and capable. I preferred driving my PA Challenger over my MN Triton.
Sorry, this generation was not available in North America. The Montero Sport was discontinued there around 2003 (it was replaced with the front wheel drive Endeavour). It's a shame really, as they would have competed favourably with the 4runner and Explorer of the time (the Explorer was still a body on frame SUV at the time).
I feel a bit of body roll. I’ve never get confidence on cornering with stock suspension; and need to apply brakes. Is it me or anyone also felt the same.
I have a 2015 PC which I’ve owned since new. I keep a spreadsheet of fuel use. At my last fill up it had 139397kms on the clock and its life time fuel consumption average is 10.334L/100kms. At 76500kms I went from 31” to 32” tyres, I was pretty consistently below 10L/100k before then (around 9.2). At 86200kms I put a Rhino pioneer platform on that didn’t help either!
I looked at buying one, but found so many had issues with the 2.5 diesel and there was a lot had motor's replaced by Mitsubishi. I bought a Holden Colorado 7 instead and glad I did.
I bought a 2015, brand new...... absolute piece of junk. The motor blew turbo hoses, bolts on the exhaust manifold, boiled on a reasonably regular basis... from new, gearbox played up and it 3ton tow rating is a complete lie. I towed 2 ton and this car just didn't cut it. Upholstery, head unit knobs and buttons very poor quality.
Got one of these 2009 2x4 i love driving these cars very responsive acceleration, i've changed the stock radiator twice first is from the plastic getting brittle because of age and 2nd one was from the radiator fan failing and the plastic from the radiator cracked underpressure, I think i changed the radiator fan 3-4 times in my ownership of 12 years
As a Toyota fan here I gotta say the tritons and the challengers from this era were bloody good trucks very good bang for buck

What would you say is the more reliable one and more diy friendly? The latest gen or this?
Did the auto drive ok? Not an unpleasant experience? Better than the manual?

You know you want to do the pre 2017 Isuzu MUX next!!!
Mitsubishi Outlander guys, we need the Mitsubishi Outlander review!!!
Pretty sure he's already done it
A bit surprising that mitsubishi brought over that generation montero to the au but toyota waited till the 2nd generation fortuner
What about a Holden jackaroo
You should do the d22 navara next
I feel a bit of body roll. I’ve never get confidence on cornering with stock suspension; and need to apply brakes. Is it me or anyone also felt the same.
if mitsubishi refuses to repair it, let them know what your consumer rights are!
*lists a number of frequent problems*
_proceeds with "they are very reliable"_
"All michael hutchence", comedy gold😂
How's the fuel consumption on these?
I have a 2015 PC which I’ve owned since new. I keep a spreadsheet of fuel use.
At my last fill up it had 139397kms on the clock and its life time fuel consumption average is 10.334L/100kms.
At 76500kms I went from 31” to 32” tyres, I was pretty consistently below 10L/100k before then (around 9.2). At 86200kms I put a Rhino pioneer platform on that didn’t help either!
I get around 12-13L with slightly bigger AT tyres, bullbar and ~100kg in the rear setup. Would probably be around 10-11L stock
Cannot see a ' 380 ' being reviewed.
needs to pin this comment
i couldn't understand that train announcer's voiceover
If you can afford the fuel costs for the petrol version, go right ahead.
Fresh montero sports
A great off roader
**Mechanic** *Basically this is a maintenance queen!* Then says "they are very reliable" 😂
I looked at buying one, but found so many had issues with the 2.5 diesel and there was a lot had motor's replaced by Mitsubishi. I bought a Holden Colorado 7 instead and glad I did.
As a Sydney Trains Driver ( who doesn't nake announcements) I approve of this Msgaghsghh
Oh Damn.....rip Micheal Hutchison
What?! When?!
pajero sport upgraded version!
Hello there 👋
MICHAEL HUTCHENCE 💀💀💀
Nyesh nyesh nyesh
if you're lucky enough to be able to find one!
