I'd argue that Pictures at an Exhibition is one of ELP's best albums and is certainly one of the best live albums of the era. Although other bands were using Moog synths, nobody was using them quite like Keith Emerson and the album served almost as a brochure of what was possible in a live setting. A good third of the set is also improvised around a basic theme which makes it more impressive.

Steve - you can improve Works Vol. 1 in two ways with one simple trick. Not only can you jettison the weaker tracks, but you can also make it into a trendy "heavyweight vinyl" edition. Superglue sides two & three together!

You missed out Kevin Ayers ….AGAIN!!!!! You really should have his first album..”Joy of a Toy” ….and also the wonderful “Whatevershebringswesing” to start with…then you can go on to other albums like “Confessions of Dr Dream” …Banamour”…”yes We Have no Manyanas…” and …”To Old to Die Young”. Alternatively you can get the anthology…. “Songs For Insane Times”. Believe me Andy you are missing out on a talent that nearly gave up on music after he left Soft Machine…but some obscure guitarist called Jimi Hendrix apparently gave him a guitar and persuaded him to continue…… I look forward to a review of his albums on your channel sometime soon

It takes me back to my college days, when I bought one great vinyl after another by Genesis, Yes, etc. Needing to study, but instead getting that Trick Of The Tail vinyl out again, enjoying the lovely art work, dreaming away with the music ... Nice to see and hear Steve Gould as well.

Good to see you picked up a copy of Moraz' "Story of I", totally overlooked at the time but an awesomely epic endeavour which involved actually going to Brazil to record the percussionists and employing the likes of Jeff Berlin, Ray Gomez and Andy Newmark as the band. Chris Squire (also involved in the production) issued the mighty "Fish Out Of Water" at this time and his and Moraz' were the best of the Yes solo ventures.

It has got to be all about the physical record covers in the vinyl resurgence. I still have my collection from the 70's and 80's and still love the artwork and liner notes. I recently ripped some of them to FLAC and attempted to clean up the snaps/crackles/pops, etc. Results were not bad, but I am eternally thankful for digital recordings and can't imagine actually listening to vinyl, again.

I own 4 of those the two Genesis ones, Tarkus which someone gave me, I'm not a particular fan of theirs but side 1 is ok. And Going For The One. You're so right about that hunter instinct. My small town had two record shops so anything you couldn't get there meant a half hour bus ride into the city. I was hunting for Abraxas, had tried Hmv and Our Price no joy, and a coupl've independents, no one had it. Thought I'd cut my losses, have a pint and get the bus. On the way back I popped into a shop wasn't even a record shop and noticed a couple of boxes of albums, and there it was Abraxas £2.99 ( this was 1980). That pint tasted brilliant after that. About 30 odd years ago I got a Hot Rats original copy, gatefold Hot Rats for a tenner. It was what got me into him, I only had Bongo Fury because I was a Beefheart fan. It was my gateway into his wonderful world.

I do miss those days of going into town and doing a full tour of all the record shops and book shops. I don't go into town any more, I don't know if Reddington's Rare Records in Birmingham still exists. Deepest Purple was my first Deep Purple album, and it was life changing, but not necessarily all their best stuff. Ad Nauseum by Derek and Clive was an almost constant presence on the turntable in our sixth for common room at school, only occasionally ousted by Herb Alpert's Tijuana Christmas.

Re: your addendum, I can relate to that hunting thrill so much - before I moved from London I used to love going to Soul Brother Records in Putney and Sounds of the Universe in Soho not knowing what I would find and sometimes chancing upon totally different stuff I hadn't heard of - it's educational! This is how I discovered Airto Moreira and Dom Um Romao. Plus these places are more like adult creches than shops because you can spend hours in there chatting with the staff. If you buy stuff online after listening to it online to check you like it, there's no risk, therefore no excitement.

Really enjoyable Andy and your personality always shines through wherever you are. One of my few criticisms of you is that you fail to see just how good Steely Dan were. They're second only to The Beatles in my book.
Back in the 60s, one of your local shops would always have a cardboard box full of old LPs outside and I remember buying Djangology by Django Reinhardt of course in about 1962.
Why does nobody ever mention Zero Time by Tonto's Expanding Head Band ?. Cybernaut is a brilliant track.
Also never mentioned the album Stud featuring Jim Cregan on guitar with the rhythm section from Taste, Richard McCracken on bass and John Wilson on drums. The track Horizon is a prog classic.
Another forgotten classic is Shawn Phillips' Second Contribution. Listen to The Ballad of Casey Deiss.
I've always said that I want Derek and Clive's This Bloke Came Up To Me, played at my funeral along with The Pogues Fiesta.
Finally, anyone remember Aubrey Small ?. Another World was brilliant.

ELP Pictures at an Exhibition oozes excitement and what it must have been like to have been at an early ELP concert. Great finds Andy! Caravanserai is the antidote to Visions of the Emerald Beyond, utterly magnificent. Al di Meola's best is arguably Elegant Gypsy. Good buys lads, a hint. - look out for self-titled album by Tonton Macoute. British psychedelic jazz-rock from 1971 that's stunning.

I'm not sure if I agree with your hunting/record shopping analogy, but I get the pull of it, for sure. I'm about your age and there were some years when I did far less record shopping, but lately, I'm back at it more than ever. I feel like it's kind of addictive behavior and sometimes it takes me a very long to to listen to the stuff that I bought, which makes me feel that I might actually prefer the hunt to the actual enjoyment of music. That and the fact that I've been spending too much money (though not so much as I buy used and manage to find bargains) and that I'm quickly running out of space mean that I really need to slow down... It's difficult though.

Absolutely loved watching this video. I went to a record convention a couple months ago here in Houston. I had let my fingernails grow a little longer so that I could flip through the records faster. I put myself on a budget of $250 all cash, in small bills, no credit cards this time. Four hours later as I was putting them in the car I counted 23 records. Since that’s an odd number I went back and picked out a few more. An hour later I had three dollars left and saw Focus’ Hamburger Concerto for three dollars. I drove home very carefully without a penny on me but I had a big smile on my face and thirty records in the trunk. Lots of prog-rock including Gentle Giant, Focus, Stackridge, Procol Harum, Yes, Caravan, Camel, and King Crimson. My favorite acquisitions that day were Fairport Convention’s Unhalfbrickung and Caravan’s Cunning Stunts.

ELP is humous? I need to go back with my advanced age and revisit this band with an eye for humor. WOW! no Foxtrot? OR Trick of the Tail? Excellent buys. I just picked up The Lamb at 45rpm (but haven't heard it w/ my turntable on the outs, ugh) Rick Wakeman and the 6 wives is an excellent choice (and I agree, Wakeman rather rubs me the wrong way; however, that album is spectacular).
Jazz Fusion.....excellent choices, Steve. Santana is a MUST. Welcome is interesting for a jazz-influenced album. Of course, Birds of Fire must be in a fusion collection (and any Weather Report).

What you saying is absolutely true it isn't always the destination it's the trip and like a good vacation you may not end up where you started going you'd get sidetracked and end up somewhere else and have maybe even a better vacation

I'm always a bit surprised when I hear of prog fans also not being into fusion.
I used to work at a record store here in LA that specialized in prog (especially imported Italian, French, German, Spanish prog), but the same people buying prog, would also be buying fusion.
To me, they seemed to go hand in hand.
I'd also see the same people at all the prog gigs and fusion gigs.
Only since the days of neo-prog, did the separation of the 2 genres seem to occur.

On your recommendation Andy, I bought War Of The Worlds on vinyl at a local Seattle shop for $10! Thank you!

I like a bit of Satana but hadn't listened to Caravanserai, listened to it on Tidal and really liked it. After it had finished it played The Gumbo Variations, now I've only heard a couple of things by Frank Zappa before and dismissed it as not my thing, but listened to the whole of Hot Rats and loved it so I've gone down a whole new rabbit hole now.

_Can-Utility and the Coastliners_ may be the most underrated Genesis song. It drowns among everything else on Foxtrot.
I love the bass work of Dave Wintour on _Anne of Cleves._
Maybe you want to give a chance to Oldfield’s _Incantation._ It’s my fav album by him.
    _Caravanserai_ is a pearl.

I had to move away from the town i grew up in the record stores were amazing. This town one store with music It was a gas station with a bin of gangster rap from the early 2000s. Loot explosions happened in record stores for me when it was gone i got hooked on video games i think and staying inside in this new environment.

I do it every month. I’ll drive to some sweet dig spots and blow my monthly budget. Sometimes I get lucky, mostly not so. But that’s the fun of it.
