  • LNG Carriers have a very well known reputation in regards to their safety performance. All crew have to be well trained on how to operate the dry powder system and does the dry powder fire extinguish system really work.Training is carried out to the main fire fighting extinguishing systems on a two month rotation.Crews are requested to pay attention to the operation of these systems and ask the assistance of the Officers on Board the Ship as necessary.
This is a training video for all officers out there.

Many thanks to you Captain for this great video. I want to ask you regarding the aiming of the cannons upon the manifolds. Once a second mate told me it has to be aimed at angle of about 45- 60 degrees in order to get the max possible coverage of all manifolds in use ( minding also the loss of pressure , as the system is running) . But i never manage to cross check this info. Do you know if thats true ?

Good morning Kalimera Kosta, yes he told you correctly most probably for the discharging arms to be used if your vessel was loading or discharging.
If you are currently on board an LNG carrier you may find this information on the SOLAS firefighting manual and on the telephone booth area on the Port and Starboard of the Manifolds.
The diagram is there and it displays requires elevation and angle to be set accordingly.

I love and enjoy when someone is posting videos like this, thank you. Since the last time, I was a chief officer on board an LPG gas carrier, for every single operation, I passed my time explaining to my crew members the use of the DCP remote stations, paying special attention to the release of the system remotely and operating from the release boxes utilizing a NITROGEN PILOT cylinder or al- alternatively manually operated at the dry powder unit.
A pilot valve opens the main discharge valve, and the dry powder flows through the distribution manifold to the monitor or hand hose line in question, as you have explained. At the present moment, I am looking for employment. Rgds

dry powder hose cabinet with 33 m must covered LOA of vessel and the manifold port and stbd must have dry powder monitoring, and for dry powder hose cabinet can disch 3 kg/sec and for dry powder monitoring 10 kg/sec, every dry powder hose cabinet and dry powder monitoring must be running min 45 sec, from that you can count the minimum capacity of fix dry powder tank on board, if i'm not mistaken...

Can someone clarify that why nitrogen is used as propelling agent instead if co2 in DCP type fire extinguishing systems. I recon that moisture in gas may solidify DCP into cakes and similar substance but usually both nitrogen and co2 are dry gases .

Thanks for the well explanation about the DCP system. I have a doubt in maintenance of DCP system. 1)how to avoid caking inside the fixed DCP systems ?`(generally in portable extinguisher we make it by upside down and shaking the portable extinguisher.)
2)how to take foam sample content ?
