Making a Farmhouse Table and Two Benches

- In this video I make a wooden farmhouse table and two benches. The design is a classic cross legged table and benches with angeled legs.
Everything is joined togheter with wedged mortise and tenons joints, half lap joints and handmade wooden dowels. I also used a couple of french screws to attach the table top and the support beam under the table.
I did not use any bread boards because I'm not too concerned about warping and twisting, it just adds a bit character to the rustic look as long as it's not too bad.
The farmhouse table and the benches are made of construction grade lumber and the total material cost was under $ 200.
Safety concerns:
I know the "safety police" will point out some things in this video so keep in mind that some of the techniques I use on the table saw can be somewhat dangerous (like cutting angles and wedges the way I do in the video). If you don't feel safe about doing a cut, don't do it. I also use gloves in some parts of the video. Gloves are not recommended to use with power tools. I usually don't use gloves but I get these crazy skin reactions from spruce.
I hope you like this video and subscribe to my channel. If you have any questions please leave a comment below. I try to answer all comments.
Let me know if you build a similar farmhouse table with benches as well, would love to see it. Хобби
Nice job Dieter. You small shop guys have the best solutions for things. Glad I spent a whole day making a taper jig for the table saw lol. A 2x4 and the sled works just as good. Thanks for that.
Thank You Dewey. A tapering jig is always nice (and a bit safer) to have so I don't think it was a waste of time :)
Beautiful work and project Dieter! I like how you managed to fit the table top in a small shop. That's why i find people with small shops or few tools more creative. It's the will that makes you do more in all circumstances.
Thanks. I have to admit that it was quite frustrating though. lol.
Thanks for the video, like the splayed legs look and I built one of my own based on your video. I have been looking for the base style I liked for a year. Great design and a great chance practice my mortise and tenon skills!
Nice work Dieter, great joinery too. Also, you have a good helper!
Thanks, yes he loves to help :)
You're a good good worker,you know what you're doing...congrats man!!!
Man, great video - really slick . Something so satisfying about watching wood work. Can't wait to do it again 👍✅
Thanks
Great looking project. Really enjoyed seeing the through tenons on this design! Keep up the great work.
Thanks, New video uploading as we speak. 97%
BEAUTIFUL WORK!
That's a fantastic piece of woodworking! Love it, keep it up!
Thank You so much. Will do my best :)
Beautiful joiner, Dieter. Thanks for sharing!
Thank You
Superb Dieter, so many little details I think most of those joints were so accurate it would have probably stayed together without the glue.
Excellent joinery skills thank you for sharing the build.
Thanks for watching :)
Great project! I really liked how you tackled those angles with your machines.
Thanks. I try to make it as simple as possible. Maybe not the most secure solution but I feel comfortable doing it this way.
I envy anyone with an assistant such as yours. Congratulations on someone who's willing to help. Oh, great project and craftsmanship.
Thank You, He's always ready to help :)
Happy New Year Everyone!

I wanted to make a video with music again. I guess it's not everyone's cup of tea but I hope most of you like it. Just wanted something relaxing, what do you think? Also striving to make better videos so feedback is always appreciated. There are unfortunately some clips missing simply because I forgot to record it but most of it is there, sorry about that.
Please subscribe if you like my content and give me a thumb up as well (thumbs down with constructiv criticism is also appreciated, that way I can improve).
Beautiful craftsmanship!!

Great looking table!!
Thanks!
Beautiful design!
Thank You
Excellent work my man. And the video quality and music were spot on. A pleasure to watch this. Also, doing what you do in such a small space is impressive. What is that tool you used to do the miter in the legs, the foot-powered machine?
a clean job man !!
Thank You so much Sir!
Amazing job...👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank You :)
Excellent!

Very nice, liked and subscribed. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, I really appreciate it. Will do my best to make interesting content.
Very impressive project !! Will be replacing our current table, possibly with your design. The price on material is certainly appealing, it's my skill set and lack of the equipment that you have on hand is the only hold back for me....... lol Once again, thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching and taking time to comment. Good luck with your project, you can do it. Cheers
Hi there from Portugal,
Nice :D

Likte designet. Kul video!
Tusen takk :)
good work
Thanks
The project is very good. Thank you for sharing.
Could you tell me what these songs are?
Ah yes, the good ol' jump fit around 3.30 is one of my favorite techniques as well. Handed down from father to son for generations.
Beautiful work man...I like how you get the young man in on the project!
I use this wood a lot in work, is it from Norway?
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, appreciate it. The wood is spruce
you as well Dieter----Man-Right On-- The music is good also---Thank You
I dont know why youtube put a line through Man-Right On
Thank You Sir. Have no idea why that happened. Thanks :)
I'm going to make one this summer and for sure I'm going to use a lot of your techniques. One thing I have to comment on - don't use gloves with a table saw. I know a guy that lost his pinky because table pulled his glove, without gloves he would have just small cut on the top of the finger.
Perfect!!!! Have you got the measurements please?
Okay very nice table and video, but you didn’t show in the video on how you attached top of table to legs.
Please explain
Thanks!
At 7:50 that rear right corner seems running upwards...
But maybe it's just a shades what makes it looks like that : D
Nice dude
Thanks
Eğer bir ağaç kesilecekse senin için kesilmeli. harikasın
I dig the build. Great work.
I like the choice of music too. Who is it?
Great work! Cute kid )
Thank You Sir :)
Never saw this corner cutting machine. it looks creepy )
Great job, ill keep this video in my "favorites" cuz i want to make one table to fit 10 - 12 people ...meaning 4 ppl each side and one on each end ...or 5 on each side and one on each end. ....will see.
Cool, thanks for watching. This table can have 3 persons on each side.
Diester....do you have an email or Face Book so i can send you privet massages ?

Thank you so much for the video! Any chance you have a drawing of the table plan?
LIKE BRO.
Can you provide list of materials such as stain used, and types of wood used (e.g. 2x4, 2x8, etc)? Thx
Very nice my friend, now subscribed
Thank You Dave, Highly appreciated
this the best
Thaks Emely
Love that color on table, what stain is that?
Great job Dieter! I would like to know how many hours it took you to build the table? Thanks!
Excellent video. Thanks :)
I’m building one of these right now and your vid is really helping me!
I’m really interested in the finish you went with. What product did you use?
I noticed that after the first coat some grain was really coming through. Did you sand it after the first coat?
Also, with the wedged mortise and tenon joints, did you make straight (vertical) cuts for the wedge to slide in or is it an angled cut?
I hope you see this :) trying to get mine finished for Christmas.
Hi!Really enjoyed the video, I have started making a few projects myself and I have a question if you could please help me with?I was told it's wrong to attach the table top to the aprons by screwing it down because the table top needs to move etc.. what are your thoughts on this? Did you screw yours down ? Any problems ? Thank you I hope to hear back from you.
Yes new video!!! You spelled table wrong in the title. What's your jointer? I ruined the blades on my old craftsman, and I'm shopping for a new one.
Thanks George, fixed it now. It's a Jet JPT-310 (European model name). It's pretty expensive but got a very good deal. I just love it, switching from jointing to planing is a breeze. I have regular blades but plan to upgrade to spiral cutter block when I can afford it.
!!!!!!!👍👍👍👍
Awesome work , great job on showing details 👍🏼
You have 2 candle, center shapes on the table , you made those ? Thank you !
Thanks. Yes, made on band saw. here is a video of it ruclips.net/video/ToE-xsdu1Kc/видео.html
That miter guillotine is insanely cool.
Yes, can only do one thing but does it very well. And no sawdust.
Looks great! 1:35 what's this? I see this kind of mitre cutter for the first time. Nice!
Thank You. That's a guillotine cutter for cutting frames but I use it for lots of stuff that need 45 degree angles.
We had this sort of cutter in our shop where i worked during my carpenter education. Yes, this is a great machine. It cuts wood, plastic, meat and fingers like butter.
Just kidding. We used it for many many things. Especially for these wooden strips which holding glass sheeds in place @ windows or doors
True, don't want your fingers under those blades :)
Schreinerpower 😂
I love the music. What was the first song?
Awesome video. Watched it a few times now. Great build and nice joinery.
How did you attach the tabletop to the base?
Thanks, I just used two french screws on each side (through the beams on each side)
Dieter Schneider French screw is euro term for lag bolt I think .
Not worried about wood movement ?
Wow.. all I got.
FAb table but what is the music? I must get a copy
Hi Dieter, I wanted to ask what the name is for that flat saw you use quite often. Great channel and love watching your videos.
Hi Matt. That's a japanese saw which cut on the pull strokes. It has two sides. One for cross cutting and one for ripping. Glad to hear that you like my videos. I'll do my best to make good videos :) You might find the saw in your local hardware store as they are becoming increasingly popular. If you want to order online you can get them at Amazon: amzn.to/2iIBKA0 (affiliate link)
Veldig bra jobba. :) Laga eit liknande oppsett i fjor vår, men "juksa" med lommehull og lange skrua. (DIY Pete) Skal bygge til gamlingane i år, og då blir det nok meir liknande ditt vil eg tru. Kan du seie litt om finish?
wao. you got excellent skills. I started two years back playing with wood, and I enjoy it. but I never made a good A shape, lol, I even dont have tools like you, I started with a hand saw and an electric drill. Now I bought a hand held router and hopeful to copy your idea if you are ok with that. I build for myself to enjoy. Will you be ok to share the pattern
You can do it!
Great tutorial video! Would you recommend Metabo Table Saw (TS 254) for small DIY shop? What's your experience and overall impression with this tool?
Thanks. Yes, I'm very happy with the saw. The fence is very good and solid (locks on both sides) and the blade that comes with the saw is good as well, both on rip and cross cuts. The only two downsides are the loose miter gauge (I understand this is a problem on most portable table saws) and the dust connection breaks quite easily. I have no problem with accuracy and it cuts thick stock (both soft and hard wood). In my opinion this is a good saw for both DIY'ers and pros.
Thanks a lot! I am considering such table saw for my shop. TS 254 was my first choice, but I have read very contradictory reviews. So it's great to know someones personal experience! Looking forward to see your upcoming videos!
Do you have plans for this? I definitely would like to build a table like this and some plans would be great to have!
Sorry, built it without plans
program name for editing your videos>
What length are the timbers you used to make the 'X' at each end of the table? The workmanship involved in this table is amazing. Well done!
Thanks. Around 110 cm. Table height is around 75 cm
Can I ask roughly how many hours goes into building something like this? I'd like to learn how to make my own furniture, but I have no idea how long these kinds of projects take.
Hi. It's a bit hard to tell. It depends on your tools and experience. Plans and a cutting list will save you a ton of time. I think I can build this in three days with a little effort. Unfortunately I don't have plans available for this project.
How did you attach the legs to the top?
Nice! This is what I need to build too. How did you attach the tops?
Screws
Question, what type of white paint did you use?
It's a stain from a Norwegian Brand (Jotun), The color is sea sand
Would like a list of materials if have it. Great table
Thanks, it's just regular construction lumber
Dieter liked the video and the build. How many hours do you think you have invested in this project? I plan on Building a farmhouse table soon. I have a few questions. I noticed you only use glue to join the table top. Why would or why wouldn't use biscuits, dowels, or pocket holes to attach the wood for the table top. Also I noticed you didn't put a breadboard on the ends of the table top. Again why would you or wouldn't you do this? And finally my last question, what kind of table saw are you using? Do you like it or would you recommend something else that is equivalent to it?
Thanks Joseph. I'm not sure how many hours I used but without the filming I think it can be done in 4-7 days. biscuits would be nice and help align the boards when gluing but it won't improve the strength in the table top. If you want a dead flat top it sure would benefit using biscuits (or dowels) but for me it was not important on this table. Since the top did not need to be perfectly flat it would also be hard to make the breadboards. If I built a more "high end" table in hardwood I would put more work in the table top. This will of course increase the build time a little. My table saw is a Metabo ts 254 which I really like. The fence is really good and sturdy and it cut thick stock both in softwood and hardwood easily. The miter gauge is not good but I use a cross cut sled in stead. The plastic dust connector also breaks quite easily but not a big deal. Of course not as rigid as a heavy cast iron table saw but I have no plan upgrading in the nearest future since it works great for both heavy work and smaller work.
Ho, just wondwring how u get that old grey looking finish.
are you in Sverige ?? I saw the biltema tools and thought to myself, wower ti have those clamps/chisels etc. :)
Norway :)
