My dad passed away about 5 years ago. He would have loved your channel. He grew up in the Depression and had learn how to fix things with whatever was available. He took pride in a grey 2wd Chevy that had some "weight reduction areas" that he "fixed" with grey duct tape and spray paint. He was also proud that the rims on the passenger side didn't match the rims on the driver side. He just liked driving his old pickup. Didn't care a bit about what anyone thought. He and my Mom grew up in North Dakota so I know all about "Uff-da", also! 😊

Yes Derek's videos are great for helping someone get through some rough times. I'm going through rough times myself currently and there are times when an emotional lift me up is vital. In fact, his videos including some that are pretty old, and some videos from a few very select others where on RUclips, have been priceless and have been helping immensely with my healing and recovery for most of the last 3 months of hell, and I credit those select few channels with my progress on relearning how to walk again. (I made a phone holder that fits on my walker so I can watch and increase my determination to succeed at walking because being able to walk and stand is the only way I can get back to being able to work on a couple of car projects of mine.

Dereks closing words at the end of the video... that's a real motivation speech. I replayed that 10 times... he's right, how many projects never start or finish just because someone can't afford to make it look or run like a car that's had 10's of thousands of dollars dumped into it. I know that's prevented me in the past every time, I didn't have the money so why start it?

I think one of the biggest flaws was the overly long crankshaft limits it's potential somewhat, but if modern metalurgy could fix that, then you need to be able to design a car that can accomodate that long of an engine. That said, any car that has one is instantly cool.

Your motto of "Get out there and enjoy it" has been a huge inspiration to all of my projects, especially my Fiero. The paint ain't pretty, it burns oil, the interior is rough, but it never hesitates to go. I had originally planned a full restoration all at once, but life wouldn't stop getting in the way, and I finally decided I just wanted to drive it. One of the best decisions I've ever made! It's been a pretty reliable daily for almost a year now. Cars are meant to be enjoyed, no matter the condition or circumstance. Thanks for all the inspiration!

Wish more car guys thought like you with your style here. Well done. Preserving patina the best way. Good reminding people; you don’t have to put a ton on money into an old car. It is often better as a survivor with the bumps and bruises that show individuality. And that is the stuff people notice. Allows more conversation, and there is no comparing of individuality 👍🏼

I learned to be a shade tree mechanic from my dad. When he passed in 2001 I brought home a 65 Monterey convertible that was rough. The only saving grace was good floors and good trunk. Put in a good solid year of work and built a nice cruiser. Watching you do your Roadworthy Rescues reminds me of all the same tricks I used back then. Still have and drive the Merc to this day. God Bless you and your family and all the people you inspire.

Hi Derek, really like your show and follow every episode and the Packard back. A lot of childhood memories because my father had a wrecking yard and one year he sold several vehicles for $50 for a demolition. Derby in the '60s and one of them was a Packard. The Packard won the demolition derby and then they had a rollover contest with it and it rolled over three times and completed the lap around the track before the radiator gave out. What a tank! 🙂

You can always "unpatina" a car but you can't create real patina after it's been painted. I have an old F150 with a lot of surface rust. The plan is to scrub-pad it down then matte clear-coat. Maybe in a year or so I'll give it a new paint job.

Yes, loved the episode but not so much the patina. Would've preferred he removed/treated as much rust as was reasonable, applied some sort of color match paint to the larger bare metal areas, and then distressed it to a matching matte finish. Finally, apply his shine juice making the Packard look its age but with a well cared for luster.
