A random Corvair story: In the late '60's I was helping a farmer friend on his Minneapolis-Moline Uni-Harvester (farm implement). It had a bad generator which was made of unavailable unobtanium because it turned backwards (counterclockwise). Fortunately I knew that Corvair generators also turned backwards and were easy to find and cheap. Quick bolt-on fix!

I helped my Dad fix up a '62 Corvair Monza back in the 1980s. He had a friend who was an interior upholsterer so he got that done for cost. He put tires, drums, shoes, and bearings all around. did a complete rebuild on the engine and patched up the exhaust. Then I spent half a summer sanding the body getting the 1.5 billion door dings and paint chips. The only damage that needed was one of the tail lights from my sister allowing it to roll back and into a wall in a Manhattan Beach parking lot. The car was a California car so hit had only surface rust on the chrome. Anyway, Dad finally got it painted and sold it. It was the prettiest Corvair of the 15 he had. Nice job getting it going. That sound is one I remember fondly. Thank You.

Being in Factory maintenance after being a dairy and grain farmer, I learned that many things seem complicated. When you break it down to systems and address each one, it makes it manageable and you learn something. Hats off to you for the lessons. Your family is blessed by working together. Love it!. It’s a clean slate design from GM. Politicians hated it. That is two good reasons to like the corvair. I’m not sure this one will be a show car, but the fact that it runs and drives makes it salvageable. I like the odd vehicles. They don’t all need to be knuckle draggers. Compared to most cars from the ‘60s, this design still seems relevant. It will be a cool project for someone. Good Job!

@@bb5242 That "horrible engine design" won countless races mounted in the back of various Porsches, from the early 4-cylinder 356 and 550 models through the iconic 6-cylinder 911 series and, in 12-cylinder form the virtually unbeatable 917 that dominated Sports Prototype racing both in the U.S. and Europe in the late 60's and early 70's. I have owned over a dozen Corvairs since 1980, and haven't had an engine failure yet. My latest one puts out 220 rwhp from 2.8 litres... on pump gas. No power adders like a Turbo, supercharger, or nitrous (On a side note, did you know that the 1962 Corvair Monza Spyder was the world's first successful turbocharged production car? "Terrible engine"). Never met a street legal 5.0 Fox body that I couldn't take in a drag race. I know that you didn't say anything about handling, but with just a few easy chassis mods (lowering springs, adjustable gas shocks, larger sway bars, poly bushings) she easily ran away from an Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce on a hilly, twisty Pocono Mountain back road. This "terrible engine" never needs a coolant flush and never needs a new radiator or hoses... because it doesn't have them!
