Glad to see you’re still giving micro four-thirds some love. I started shooting MFT in 2013 with the G6 and GM1. I’ve upgraded those but I still find the MFT cameras useful, mainly for event videos where the unlimited clip length is handy for locked off focus B and C cam shots. And yes, I also shoot APS-C and full frame, but agree that the MFT ecosystem is pretty darn handy and can produce good results.
Ive had great success pairing my GH5 as a B cam to my S5. MFT can be extremely useful if you need a tighter shot or smaller set up. Can be really easy when running around in weddings and events to throw on something like the Olympus 45mm f1.2 or the Olympus 75mm f1.8 to get those tight shots with decent seperation and then running around FF camera with a 24-70 and suddenly you're covering every range very easily and with light weight! Especially now with the S5ii, chuck that FF cam on a gimbal and have the MFT camera with a tight lens ready to go.

Thanks for the breakdown! There have been some extremely tempting deals on used GH6 bodies going for about $1K USD. Had the same exact thought about picking one up (i.e. uncropped 4K 120p at the price point is pretty insane). G9II is also intriguing, but being newer is priced slightly higher. S5II and G9II bodies being essentially the same is also a bonus.
The fact that you produce a non-photography channel gives you a lot more credibility than those who only shoot camera/lens reviews in their bedroom or basement. Yes, these are different cameras with different strengths, and the AF on the GH6 isn't horrible, just not the best out there. I've been using both GH5M2 and GH6 with AF, and while they do occasionally fail, they are in focus most of the time. Of course, when a MFT Lumix camera comes out with the PDAF, I'll most likely add one to my kit, but for now, I'm getting my work done with what I have. That will replace my old DVX200 MFT camcorder, which did have horrible AF.
I actually discovered this channel long after I'd been watching his music channel for years lol. I was like, this is the dude that convinced me to get the Fender Tone Master Twin Reverb.
Great video, Shane. People are seemingly running away from the GH6 for the S5ii. I think they might be pulling the trigger a little to soon as the S5ii, while being very good, is a different beast. It primarily shines at FF 6k 30fps, but if you shoot 60fps, I think the GH6 is a far better choice as there's only a slight difference in crop, never mind the 120fps where the GH6 wipes the floor with the S5ii. Also, no PDAF in the S5ii at 120fps 1080p. The AF on the GH6 is very serviceable and the drawbacks of going into FF L-mount, buying new, more expensive, bigger glass is a hard sell for me.
This makes a great companion video to one I recently made that I think you commented on! Nobody should regret their camera, purchase decisions, and this video does a great job of explaining why people might feel a certain way about things, as well as show you why both cameras do certain things, much better or worse than the other
Just ordered my first “real” camera - the gh6 with the 100-400 tele lens. Many thanks to you for showing how much this camera can do. Got it for 4k 60p/120p and lighter lenses (compared to ff) for wildlife video shooting. Looking forward to developing my manual focus skills 😅
Yes sir! Spot on, workflow considerations are way overlooked and to be able to record and be completely confident in the content where all you need to do is cut and dub or align audio it worth it's weight in gold! More time for guitar gear 😛
As a multi decade canon shooter I did own the GH5 for awhile and enjoyed it, but wished for the Phase detect. Now I'm tempted to get the S5II to compliment my R6 II. Open Gate is always intriguing to me and internal 6k would be awesome. Can you adapt EF lenses to the full frame S5II like you could with the GH5 and 6? That would make having a dual system easier to swallow.
Yes there is a Sigma adaptor for EF to L glass that works extremely well with autofocus and aperture control. Look up Kai W's S5ii review, at about the 25 min mark, Kai has a lengthy section testing the Sigma adaptor and Josh Cameron also has a dedicated video testing the sigma adaptor with the EF glass. Just give their names with S5ii to EF or something a search on RUclips and you'll find their tests :)
i love that you did a video on this combo. And alluded to making mistakes (we all do) I shoot 2 x S5s and a Gh6 (for tele reach with the 100-300) (plus all the drones and go pros we are alos expected to have) - I will be getting a S5 mk2 soon-The Panasonic 24-70 f 2.8 is the absolute bomb on the S5. I have found myself getting overwhelmed (just) on corporate shoots - by the time you have the big soft box set up, got the backlight/ hairlight in position built the boom mic set up, reset the framing because the client wants a change, got the teleprompter set up - adjusted the speed of the teleprompter to the clients read- changed the script becasue the spokesperson doeasnt like how it reads, put the telepompter away becasue comms person changed their mind and wants eyeline off camera - re set framing again because a comms person higher up the chain has a new idea for framing and eventually regained control of the set only for someone to walk in with 5 cups of coffee - etc etc - (welcome to the actual reality of shooting corporate video) - well lets just say that you dont get a lot of time to perfectly finesse manual focus - being able to rely on af for the all important interview and get sharp eyes all the time will be handy for sure. (and i am pretty handy with MF- but talent does lean in and out) The 16 mm Sigma f 1.4 (and maybe the laowa 7.5) are 2 lenses that have kept me shooting M43 in combo with FF. If you havent exeperienced the Sigma 16- make sure you do !!! its manual focus ring action is AWFUL but its look is stellar and because its continousAF is a bit slow it actually makes focus adjustments that look organic. I could (and have shot entire events with the 16 and they looked stellar) - in fact you would swear that it was shot on full frame but with the addition S5 series and its lenses we are soo spoiled.
I didn't buy GH 6 only because of poor AF, I hope Panasonic will upgrade it soon. I am solo content creator and one camera needs to do all a-roll b-roll. I like GH 6 had Livestream function, I am surprised basic s5ii doesn't. I don't need raw recording from s5ii x but I would like to Livestream directly from the camera without laptop or mobile phone .
Yeah the GH6 is missing a lot of features from the GH5/GH5M2 for no good reason. What I think is that Panasonic considers the GH5M2 more for the photo and vlogger crowd, while the GH6 was aimed at more pro creators.
I agree with EVERYTHING you said. Especially the part about not shooting everything wide open on a FF camera. Looks really odd and it should be used sparingly. Only want to add I personally think the GH6 Vlog color is a tiny bit better straight out of camera. Can't wait till my S52 comes in the mail next week!
I'm interested in starting with some content creation for my daughter and myself and have heard of so many issues with Sony cameras overheating. Eg. ZV1, ZV-E10, A6xxx series etc. Really disappointing. Looking at Panasonic and while higher end Pannys are more pricey, thinking it might be better to pay a bit extra so I don't have to upgrade in the future. This video was really helpful. Keep u the great work.
Fantastic video Shane! And awesome work comparing the two cameras! I'm a big big fan of the GH6 even though I don't own one yet. It's an absolute monster! The only concern is the 2x crop on the image, which I guess is something that a person learns to deal with with time, and the 2x on the f stop which again is manageable. And the pros are so many, mainly the incredible image quality and the exceptional IBIS. And the perception that owing to the 2x on the f stop the camera won't be able to achieve good background blur is so clearly debunked in this video! Once again fantastic video Bro and great analysis! Looking forward to many more from you! 🙏🙏
Nice video Shane! I have the GH6 and I am thinking about getting a second camera for my wedding video business. Do you recommend me to get the s5ii or another m4/3 camera? Thanks for the advice and keep doing these awesome vids
Thanks, Brico. It comes down to autofocus and IBIS. If you need those two things, the S5II is a great camera. The GH5S is a great camera for saving a few bucks (if you find them on sale) if you already have the lenses but its AF isn't as good and there's no IBIS system at all.
Love this vid. Qstn: if I'm looking at video content creation at a home setup (nothing fancy yet with lighting) and possibly showing and reviewing some products, would the S5II be the better option given the better auto focus? Looking at shooting at 4K and 30 or 60 fps should suffice. Thanks
In standard frame rates like 24, 25, and 30p, the S5II is a better choice. If you need 4K120p, the GH6 is a great option. Check into the G9II as well, it's like the GH6 except with great autofocus.
I think this is rather pointless as basically everyone is waiting for the "GH6M2" with PDAF. I you have the GH6 it's fine, I refused to get one without that PDAF - which seems to be a pretty god decision considering this "sudden" switch to PDAF a few months later. I'm saving my cash for the GH with PDAF. Which really should be announced soon at CP+ show and be ready before the summer if Panasonic is serious. The GH6 without PDAF was a heresy.
