Sorry for your loss…my brother passed away a year ago. It’s weird knowing someone and knowing they’re not there anymore. Great video. Cheers

I have the GH5 Mk2 and I think the autofocus is great; however, I'm using a Panasonic lens. I shoot live theatre, concerts and dance shows. I can shoot my closeups with the Mk2 and the 35-100 mm with confidence using the animal/human mode of autofocus. I no longer need my ENG cam to do the closeups. This makes matching cameras easier (I have two other GH5's) and it is very important when live streaming.

Great review Zach, and as you say it`s not the gear that make you good it`s your skill using what you have

Do you think it’d be a good idea to replace the S5 with a GH5ii? I know it’d be a downgrade in low light but having 4K60 with no crop would be sweet.

I think you missed or didn't mention a large number of small but very nice improvements and the best thing is, they will most likely going into the GH6 too. Here are some: Single back button AF in VFR mode before recording, two new color profiles, 13 custom profiles (up from 5) and they can get names, linear manual focus by wire with native lenses, external USB power, ISO values shown while recording with auto ISO. It's still not enough to switch from the GH5 to me.

I have a GH5 II and it’s amazing. Used it for a full day vlog (using AF-C face tracking) and it performed amazingly. Vlog is up on my channel if you’re interested in seeing how it performed. Switching to this for a vlogging/RUclips camera coming from a Sony A6400.

I am actually finding the AF to be remarkably reliable even using M.Zuiko Pro lenses. Also, the low light is better than the original GH5, more like APS-C territory…

@@jonatanjimenez3819 My results are not much different than what is already online. I am not a RUclipsr, I am a watcher. Besides, it would require permission from clients to upload what I have shot, and it is not professional to burden them with this matter after the fact…
I use the GH5 and now I have the GH5II. starting with the GH4 back in 2014. Before that various other cameras. For me, the GH5 is unrivaled as far as features for cost, the GH5II even more so, which is why I now have one.
For me it is a no brainer, there is nothing on the market that is as professional as the GH5II at it’s cost, and especially paired with an Atomos Ninja V.
Obviously If one can afford the GH5II, one can easily afford cameras like: Blackmagic Pocket 4K, Lumix S5, GH5S, OMD E-M1III, E-M1X, Fujifilm X-T4, X-H1, X-Pro3, Sony A7III, a7C, and various Canon, or Nikons.
But none else has as complete a feature set for video than the GH5 or GH5 II. My weapon of choice is settled, with the money I save, I can buy lenses which are far more important. Audio gear and microphones, cages and various rig components, lights, etc…
I can literally purchase most, if not all of what I need for the same price of a Sony A7SIII and an appropriate lens.
I have a nearly complete set of M.Zuiko Pro lenses / Voigtlander f0.95 Primes / Zeiss CP2 Cinema Lenses with individual VIltrox EF speed-boosters for each lens/ and the Sigma Art 18-35mm f1.8
My go to lenses are the M.Zuiko Pro 12-40mm/2.8, 40-150mm2.8, and the 45mm/1.2 (all weather-sealing)

Autofocus is very good in the new GH5ii with native lenses and I think very well usable. It is a black and white difference to the original GH5. A really great improvement.

I bought a GH5 II last week and I’m quite impressed with the improved autofocus over the original GH5 (owned one for a short while). And that’s coming from a Sony user. Don’t get me wrong, the GH5 II is nowhere close to Sony’s AF but it’s very useable.

  • @marinrealestatephotography

Thanks for the review. It's an intriguing camera to me. Not to disagree (or be disagreeable), but for $1,600 one could get a used full-frame Panasonic S1 with the V-LOG upgrade installed, and actually save money in the long run. True, No fully articulating screen, and the S1 is big and heavy and boxy. But you can get 6K internal on a big-old FF sensor with full V-LOG, so you get a ton of dynamic range AND great low-light performance. If one is comfortable with manual focus (and if you shoot with Panasonic cameras, you better get comfortable with manual focus), then there are a ton of (relatively) inexpensive full frame manual focus lenses out there, and some sort-of-affordable Canon EF lenses that can be adapted on a $200 adapter (as opposed to getting a speedbooster and a sigma 18-35 f/1.8 for mft cameras). Just a thought.

I just acquired a GH5II brand new discounted 200$. I already have a Viltrox speedbooster that was about 200$ too, and the Sigma 18-35mm/1.8, it is more like a 24-50mm/1.2 with a Super35 look. Not to forget, the GH5II comes with V-Log L as well. Now, I use the GH5II with an M.Zuiko Pro set of lenses, and can report that the AF works incredibly reliably well. I do not have any Lumix Pro Leica lenses, which could have considerably even more reliable results, however, I cannot say.
i will say that I believe the low light capability of the GH5II is closer to the OMD E-M1 III, which I found to be on par with the Canon 80D and many Pentax or Nikon APS-C cameras. However, no one else has a camera so rich in video centric features than GH series cameras…

COntrary to popular belife, you won't get shallower DOF with a speedbooster. This is because the gain in f stop, say from 1.8 to 1.2, is negated directly by the widening of the FOV.

Question from a newbie: I want to create close up videos of birds eating seed off the deck in my backyard very similar to this example ( ruclips.net/video/XDrB5c4-c9Y/видео.html ). I want to run the video camera for very long periods of time so it must resist overheating so that is why I am considering a Panasonic GH5ii but I am concerned about Panasonic's autofocus. Do you think this type of video could be created with manual focus ? Do you think the autofocus of the Panasonic GH5ii is good enough for this type of video ? ( If you think there is a better camera or camcorder option than the Panasonic GH5ii I would be grateful for any advice. I know the Sony A7Siii is also a good option but it is pretty expensive. ) Thank you for your help. PS - I would really be grateful for any advice you can give on this topic.

Recently I shot a pickle ball music video and the auto focus worked very well. The only problem I ran into was that it struggled with multiple people in the frame. It would draw a box around all the people it could see and the person who was in focus was in a yellow box. The footage was very useable.
