somebody get this man to the Grand Old Opry anyone who can sing such an old song with such passion and power deserves to sing it on country music's highest stage
Truly a mournful performance, here I think of my grandfather after a long day of work, knowing I will soon follow him. I hope all who see this know that you are loved and thank you for reading.
I believe most of our music is Scotts Irish influenced. Second only to the influence of American black folks. That’s a big part of who we are. At least in my valley music gets pretty Celtic and the young people still show up to dance. Less than our grandmother’s generation, but it’s unbroken tradition at the granges limping along. We’ve got other scenes too. Quite a bit of metal around when I was a kid, but I think that crowd has been transitioning to something a little more punk rock for a while now.
It matters not; I have been told, where the body lays when the heart goes cold. Thanks for this song man it was running through my head the entire time through losing my grandad who was basically my father. Thank you
I know Sam is Scottish, but this reminds me of the 2 Irish brothers who join Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call’s cattle drive up to Montana in “Lonesome Dove.”
I love that such a simple story can carry such a complex feeling when you set it to music. It’s a shame that young man wasn’t buried at his home, but it’s almost like the prairie is his home now. It’s a world that’s harsh and difficult to make a life in, but one that’s full of love and companionship nonetheless.
This is your best version of this song. And the other version is amazing so I appreciate this and you. You’ve helped my recovery and maintain my sobriety.
"O bury me not on the lone prairie." These words came low and mournfully From the pallid lips of the youth who lay On his dying bed at the close of day He had wasted and pined 'til o'er his brow Death's shades were slowly gathering now He thought of home and loved ones nigh As the cowboys gathered to see him die "O bury me not on the lone prairie Where coyotes howl and the wind blows free In a narrow grave just six by three- O bury me not on the lone prairie" "It matters not, I've been told Where the body lies when the heart grows cold Yet grant, o grant, this wish to me O bury me not on the lone prairie." "I've always wished to be laid when I died In a little churchyard on the green hillside By my father's grave, there let me be O bury me not on the lone prairie." "I wish to lie where a mother's prayer And a sister's tear will mingle there Where friends can come and weep o'er me O bury me not on the lone prairie." You might also like WILDFLOWER Billie Eilish So Long, London Taylor Swift Peter Taylor Swift "For there's another whose tears will shed For the one who lies in a prairie bed It breaks me heart to think of her now She has curled these locks, she has kissed this brow." "O bury me not..." And his voice failed there But they took no heed to his dying prayer In a narrow grave, just six by three They buried him there on the lone prairie And the cowboys now as they roam the plain For they marked the spot where his bones were lain Fling a handful o' roses o'er his grave With a prayer to God his soul to save
Well I found the video I'm gonna play on repeat for the next few weeks. Awesome picking and singing mate! I'm trying to learn this song on my 5 string.
I appreciate your beautiful renditions guiding me to the stories of so many of our ancestors, who were displaced from any sense of home, and who still haunt the lands of turtle island with all the horror they experienced, as well as the horror they caused. I take my studies of these histories very seriously because the FULL story needs to be remembered if we want to compost the trash that poverty, displacement, imperialism and colonialism leaves in its wake.
Something that this makes me wonder about is how many of these songs were written to be sung by foreign voices. Early American would have been such a melting pot of voices and accents and cultures that many of these songs probably sound a little different with modern American accents.
Considering it's a cowboy ballad and around then a lot of Americans would've had stronger british descent I imagine some of the people singing this wouldn't be too far of sam
I found another verse that reminds me of your recent loss. I'm thinking of incorporating it into my rendition of the song, which is based on yours: "'I've often wished to be laid, when I died/In the little church[sic] on the green hillside;/By my father's grave there let mine be--/O bury me not on the lone prairie." I first saw it in the Lomaxes' record. I'll have to tweak it to fit, but thought you might be interested.
I think I've listened to close to EVERY version of this song..... yours is by far THE BEST! I can feel the grief and sorrow in your voice. It's just phenomenal!❤
Hello Sam ..It is me ..Danny Mangos from Florida...Sounds good...I got the can drum fire waiting over her. When ya going to come tour and Busk FL with me. I got all my washboard rigs ready and waiting to fire off.
Would it be rude to ask what tuning you play this out off I really wanna try and learn this , my best guess is a doc Boggs tuning like fDGAD or fCGAD but that’s only a guess.
@@remytherat1357can’t offer too much help (I’m trying my best too) but In the video it almost appears he has tuned down all his strings a full step. I believe you can see him holding down the B (A) and D (C) strings on the second or third fret, but the video is quite blurry.
Long Live Scotland! Is there where Thomas De Quincey is buried? More than 20 years ago with a friend we had the idea of lifting up his tombstone which at the time was face down in the ground. We wanted to honor the writer but the stone weighted a ton!
Friends, this song is about me. I’m from New England, finishing out my military service in Oklahoma. I haven’t written my Will yet, but if I get it, don’t bury me here. I want my ashes spread in Massachusetts, not to share the fate of the man in this song 💀
Sam, I absolutely adore your music and you’ve inspired me to pick up the banjo. I want to learn lone prairie and gambling davey, could you tell me what tuning you’re in for these songs? Much love!
How did you develop this take on the song? It’s so different from all the other versions in terms of rhythm and time. Would love to hear more songs like this from you.
I am an eternal pessimist who thinks good country is dead and anything that isn’t Texas country sucks…. This version of this song is phenomenal. Sam is an instant legend. Fair play to you, Sir!
Singing this for my cat. I buried him in my lone backyard. RIP Nips, my cowboy.
RIP Nips 💜
RIP to a true compadre

RIP Nips ❤️
I cat stop laughing. Rip, Nips.
To sing an old tune to old souls in a graveyard is such a beautiful thing.
now i don’t have to get my phone to replay the short version over n over again :) [i probably still will cause it has its own charm]
You can always go to the settings on the video at the top right and press loop and it will play it over and over to your hearts desire

Truely the song of a youthful America
American folk song with a Scottish/Irish folk sound to it, a mix I never knew I needed to hear so bad. It’s great, dude 👍🏻

You have such an amazing version of this song. I can't find a better version than this one.

hi sir,,,,you found the picking pattern?
I would like to know and what banjo tuning does he use?
thank you very much.
greetings from belgium
Vocals lovely and remind me of “The Corries” - great sound and great playing! 💪
Hey Sam! Just discovered your craft and I can't describe the emotions I get listening to this song. I'm forever grateful for musicians like yourself.
I found this on Ifunny and was worth it. Very into old cowboy/ and folky music like this. Reminds me of National Park Radio
Reminds me of a pioneer sitting in front of a camp fire singing out west
