MoxFulder, i so get your imaginative comment. I was thinking of his fine brain going through the exquisite decision tree of forest sounds. Is it this? Nah, maybe that? Uh uh, don't think so. Strangely, I had a fox come and watch me practicing my drumming on a rubber pad while sitting on a park bench one night. I was tapping out a blues shuffle... A tight one. He was walking between two bushes 10 yards ahead and he stopped, looked at me then crept up with his head on the side staring... Like he couldn't work out what I or it was he was looking at/listening to. It was pretty intense, I wondered if he was going to pounce at me for a moment. That's how it's staying aware of any potential dangers. As much as the music interests it, it's still very wary & cautious about being in the open like that.
It's so nice when humans and wild animals just let each other be / watch each other curiously. Such a result is practically impossible between humans, so to see it with a wild "beast" is heart warming!
Imagine the story that fox has to tell to all his friends. "One of those scary 2 legged hairless things had a weird sounding stick... And he didn't try to kill me with it. It was nice." -🦊
Other fox: "Wow, can't believe your luck Dave, Kevin tried to approach a chicken pen a few weeks ago and got torched by some crazy two hairless legs with some weird lightning stick. Oh well, he was never really the brightest bulb in the shed"
“Legend tells of a man who lived in the wilds among the trees and the animals. Every evening the man would play his banjo as the sun slipped behind the mountains. He played not for anyone in particular, only for the joy it gave him. But one night as the man was playing he had a visitor: a red Fox. The fox heard the music from afar and wished to hear more. Upon finding the Man with the banjo he sat upon a rock awaiting the next performance. The man, now having an audience, obliged. As the sun crept lower the fox went on his way, and the man went to sleep. The next evening, the man went to play his banjo to the sunset, as was his custom. This time, however, the red fox was waiting patiently upon the rock.”
One day in the nineties I was playing my Banjo in the forest in Northern Germany and I had the same experience: A fox came out of the bushes. He stood and listened and then sat down. I played non-stop 40!! Minutes. Then I started to sing- that was a mistake - the Fox got up, turned and went away. He Never came back!
And the moral of the story is??? Obviously these foxes are hill billys and love banjos. I think it reminds them of when they were little foxes in their den with their mother fox and she played the banjo she found on the path one day and it reminded the fox of his mother who got her leg snapped off in a trap. Am I reading this right.
I watched this video back during the mandates. This video was published six days after I lost my job of 15 years. I was in an emotional place and this was the sunshine on my cloudy day. Today, it popped up again in my news feed. It was another gloomy day that was brightened by your video. Thank you and God bless you.
I used to go in the woods behind my house, sit on a big rock, and sing songs. Every time birds would come down and listen. Once I saw a deer milling around too. It was a magical time. Animals love music!
I don’t know which is more beautiful….the land or you playing the banjo for that fox. I hope you continue doing so. You’re a blessing to the foxes and me. I could feel the goodness through your video. So lovely. God bless you.
@@Zeus-wl2pl 😎 Hmm... ALL lifeforms are driven by food and procreation. Being that human music is a novelty to them, wild animals WILL listen to it -- if it's pleasing to their ears. Otherwise, they'll just run away from the "noise".

He's like a Disney princess character except way way cooler. But really though, living on a secluded mountainside while playing music for wildlife at sunset is the epitome of an amazing life!
Is it secluded though? Could pan the camera around and there’s a bunch of houses behind him. I used to live in the countryside growing up, used to love walking my dogs in the fields and forests. Kinda miss it but there’s not really any jobs out there.

I like to sing around the house, and if I'm singing something particularly lofty and slow my cat will come up to me and apparently listen, because she always sits looking at me with the most contented and loving look in her eyes. She always does this until I stop singing. It makes me feel like a Disney princess tbh.
@@TheDavveponken I have an theory that cats just se it as the humans are acting strange when they sing. Not particulary that they like the singing or not.
the fact that the fox just sat there and chilled means he feeds it. thats not a wild animal, its tame. and its dangerous to the fox to be tamed and dependent on humans for food. which is why its illegal to feed wild animals pretty much everywhere in 1st world nations.
This video as a whole is beautiful. The soft banjo playing, the fox just wandering around, even listening for a while and not to mention the stunning scenery in the background.
I have had the same experience playing my harp. I had a hummingbird who would perch right in front of me and would Bob her head back and forth to the music. She did this everyday I was outside. I also experienced it with robins. They were searching for worms but when I began to play they would literally freeze on the spot, and when I stopped they’d hop across the yard again.
Fun fact: Hummingbirds have musical genes. It’s been studied. I learn about it at a conference. Of course we as humans do, but it’s cool to find it in birds. Either it was Hummingbirds or Mocking Birds. Both actually.
Unusual….whenever I played the banjo ,the hummingbirds would immediately fall unhurt to the ground. It’s difficult to fly with your wings covering your ears. Perhaps banjo lessons should be in my future?
I'm so sorry you dog is gone. Probably in heaven watching you. All dogs go to heaven. My Joey is there. Little did I know we would not spend Christmas together last year. Lost her right before 2021 ended.
As a teenager, I started singing in the woods while hiking by myself. A baby fox went up to me & curled up beside me. He sat there until I quit singing. I really wanted to pet him but didn’t. Felt like having a pet dog along for my hike!
While walking a fox sat down and curled up to you? How if you were hiking. I too once sang in the woods and had 100 bears sit near me and clap and ask for an encore

@Isaac Huyard because if I were stuck out in the wilderness with just a fox and a camera person I'd want that only other person to be a woman. just a personal preference that's all.
She left momentarily to check and see if you were playing just for her..when she saw that you were ..she came back to be to your audience of one..how sweet..and what a beautiful back yard to play your music in
How many times have we watched an amazing artist perform in a venue while the audience talks or is on their phones? Bravo for this well-mannered, appreciative fox✨️🌟✨️
This proves that the beauty in music can transcend through different species. Ive noticed this with my dog as well. When I play guitar he comes and sits real close and looks up at me with happy eyes. Sometimes he even falls asleep to my playing.
My dog is exactly the same, he curls up beside me or at my feet, and falls into the deepest sleep when I play, and I'm very average as a guitarist, and just noodle to switch my brain off. Music is the language of the soul.
Animals do not recognize music a we humans do. They hear the noises but they can’t identify the connection between them. It’s a cute thought though but it doesn’t work like that, it’s been proven many times scientifically. There are but in fact videos of parrots and such birds who recognize a beat and bang their head to it, that’s another cool story.
Yes, cows are very curious critters. They love to gather round and watch or listen to people doing things. Our used to always stand at the fence watching the neighbors in their back yard. Cattle are the nosiest of neighbors!
I listened to this on loop till I felt better. Till this gave me hope that life can be good sometimes. As I listened I heard more background noises, like a cat? Then maybe a lawnmover and more... this whole video gave me such nostalgy🥺🌷 please never give up♡

The Appalachian Orpheus. Oddly enough, the Romans were fascinated with this idea and one of their favorite experiments was to give a condemned criminal a lyre before throwing him in the arena
You're a fox. You've been traveling days, barely scraping by for food. You come across a good haul and continue your wayward journey before hearing a strange noise. It's coming from one of those human creatures. It appears to be a stick of some kind. Weirdly enough, the noise is rather soothing, almost comforting. You step closer until you lock eyes with the strange giant. His lips curl and bear teeth, but the noise from his stick doesn't stop. You unconsciously inch closer. Surely, if this creature meant you harm, it would've done so by now. You now hear the noise in all its little intricacies. Like a swirl of different emotions gathering into a strange elixir inside your little heart. The noise continues from the strange giant. You feel a vague sense of comfort, perhaps more so than you should. Your vision guides your paw to look over to the cliffside, and you see yet another source of possible food and water. You look back towards the human still with his teeth bared, but no hostile action. You gather your nerves to wander into the woods, but for some reason, you find yourself reluctant to forgo this feeling, given by the human's instrument. You stay but a moment longer. You doubt you will hear anything like this noise again, and you listen one final time before letting the music fade behind you onto your journey...
I don't want to be the turd in the punch bowl but that is clearly a domesticated fox that this person has raised - note the way it treats the person filming without threat as well as the man playing. It's a cute video and all but this fox is not wild and is quite used to being subservient in the presence of humans.
With all the craziness happening around us this just warms my heart. The music, the scenery and the response of that wild fox to the music was indeed a breath of fresh air. Thank you for sharing
I played harmonica for a hippopotamus at the national zoo in Washington DC. She was in an indoor pool with her calf. She started trumpeting along with me (blowing through her nostrils) IN KEY!! She had perfect pitch. It was amazing 🤩
@@goodyeoman4534 Well, it was a long time ago, but if I recall correctly, I think it was a Hohner Marine Band harmonica in the key of C.......to this day, I like to think it was a pleasant moment for her, you know, this one being used to people and all. But, I really don't know. I don't speak Hippo. She may have wanted to kill me, I suppose, what with her calf being there, and them being very territorial.
I played didgeridoo to a herd of cows once. It sent them a bit mental to be honest (I was behind a fence luckily). They didn't seem aggressive or scared..just very hyperactive. I always wondered what it sounded like to them.
My cat loves the guitar and if she hears piano music she comes running. Many animals have some intelligence. Do they have creativity and appreciate music? I think many do in different levels.
Foxes have insanely sensitive hearing, so while that fox is walking around him and changing where it's ears are pointed, It is hearing a vastly different version of the song because that fox can absolutely hear the sound reflecting off the trees, humans are capable of such feats but you basically need to train your hearing for years and usually only the blind can pull it off because they just need to rely on their hearing a lot more than most people.

@@eyeballengineering7007 It's great to be able to capture those moments: I remember one sight from my childhood when about 8 of the chickens we had been keeping got out through the wire mesh (these were tiny - they were bantam chickens) and they were chirping, jumping and running around my pet cat as he slept on the floor in the shed under the sun rays that came in through the roof. Had I not seen it I never would have believed it. This was back in the mid nineteen seventies and of course there were no mobile phones then.
Some of us still know...activate it in you, start by being present at sunrise snd sunset, when you start waking up at 3:40am, you know ur activated:) miraculous it tiz
Moving ears independently is how animals maintain situational awareness. By monitoring sounds from both sides of their head in different directions, they can pinpoint the direction & distance a sound is coming from. To me it looks like the fox is very interested in the banjo, but it's also super cautious & wary about being caught unawares if it lets its guard down. Hence its ears are swivelling on overdrive, monitoring the sounds coming from all other directions while its eyes are focused on the banjo man. This is a sign that this isn't a tame fox; it's probably habituated to being around humans, else it wouldn't be bold enough to approach them this close, but it's also not fully comfortable being this close to them, and is hyper-attuned to potential dangers coming from any direction - even as it's captivated by the banjo and doesn't want to leave. Pretty cool, IMHO.
Fox is just waiting to be fed. Notice how came back when the song was over. Waits patiently again. Guy goes off on an unwanted encore and fox was like, eff this i'm out.
@@lachlanbell8390something you may be missing is foxes. Have incredibly sensitive hearing so it is likely hearing very different things when his ears are pointing in different directions because it is more capable of picking out the music reflecting off of the trees at different distances which would be slightly distorting the sound in different ways. Humans can pick this up a little bit to anyone who's heard a song performed inside of a building and out in the wild will tell you it does sound different but not dramatically different (maybe some will, but it will still be recognizable as the same song. Where as I suspect for this fox it's practically hearing entirely different songs depending on the direction its ears are pointing)
@@illiadmcswain3956 the banjos or gourds from africa sound like crap compared to a modern banjo. not bashing the primitive tech but imo its not even close
Beautiful. Seeing this, I have to believe music -- along with food/scraps, of course-- played a part in luring the first wolves to the campfires to be the first domesticated dogs.
That was pretty cool! You could tell the fox was really intrigued by the sound of the banjo because his ears were twitching back-and-forth. Very cool video!
@Goaty McGoatface lol the dude was right next to a structure of some kind, telephone poles in the background, and you expect him to drop what he’s doing and move somewhere else because a fox approached him? Gtfo
@Goaty McGoatface Wildlife rules are set to insure two things. To prevent wild animal dependency on humans (food), and to prevent potentially dangerous wild animals from scaring humans into killing said animals for getting too close (misunderstood intentions). If it was a wolf or a bear I would reason with you on the latter, if this guy fed the fox to coax it on screen I would reason with you on the former. In this case if a guy plays a banjo and minimally dangerous wildlife happens to find him out of curiosity you might as well keep playing. Not the guy's fault for playing the banjo out in the middle of nowhere and happened to gain an audience. Him playing made no human dependency against the fox. The fox would likely never approach any other human later on unless they were playing an instrument, and even if it did it wouldn't cause any harm to either party however unlikely the reoccurrence. Humans and wildlife do not live exclusively from eachother, do not pretend it is or ever was like that. We don't have to act scarce just because mother nature decided to show up, and mother nature will never act scarce around us as long as we don't keep killing it off.

Fox in my area eat mainly mice. I have farm animals including chickens, l've watched them in the field beside the chickens leaving them be choosing to hunt the mice and vole.
Dude notice how the fox went and sat like a dog not once but twice in same spot? Why would a fox sit obediantly like a dog in front of a human? Cause the human trained the fox to do so by feeding it. The fox dont care about his music, lol. Its looking for more food. He shouldve made the "i trained a fox to sit like a dog" video.....
The Way-off Grid i go where the evidence leads me. I feed the coyotes where i live and make them sit before i feed them. The way the fox's ears move independently to simultaneously hear in different directions.
That's how it's staying aware of any potential dangers. As much as the music interests it, it's still very wary & cautious about being in the open like that.
@@lachlanbell8390 Right - any audible, potential dangers. Humans do that as well. The movement of the fox's ears was notable, though.

My brain read that in Pete Seeger's voice and that made me very happy.

Wow, I’ve not heard of this before. Brings alive wonder… so amazing.
I love the hummingbird part of your story.
That would be so cool to see. The harp sounds other-worldly to me. If I was a little bird, I'd stop and listen to you play too.
Fun fact: Hummingbirds have musical genes. It’s been studied. I learn about it at a conference. Of course we as humans do, but it’s cool to find it in birds. Either it was Hummingbirds or Mocking Birds. Both actually.

More please

Foxes have insanely sensitive hearing, so while that fox is walking around him and changing where it's ears are pointed, It is hearing a vastly different version of the song because that fox can absolutely hear the sound reflecting off the trees, humans are capable of such feats but you basically need to train your hearing for years and usually only the blind can pull it off because they just need to rely on their hearing a lot more than most people.

Oh man, that's the moment that really got me, watching him run back to his position and sit for more!!!
Yes Kurama has a pretty good taste!

@Destination Exile did you hunt them for meat? If not, it's you who's disgusting
@Destination Exile it's called nature dude, is a lion a disgusting animal pretty sure they'd attach a child, and Fox's don't just attack children you fool..your comment is disgusting..
@Destination Exile I seen this video year's ago, what's your point? , one fox attacks a child and millions of foxes around the globe are disgusting animals?, foxes in the uk are like rat's now, that was a once off, probably happened a hand full of time's around the world, way less than dogs attacking children every single day, are dogs disgusting animals?
Fox in my area eat mainly mice. I have farm animals including chickens, l've watched them in the field beside the chickens leaving them be choosing to hunt the mice and vole.
It's ten times as Ruff for a Dog lol
Those ears darting all around... Trying to pick up every little sound. Clearly enjoying it. Amazing!
@@Brynden-Rivers A cynic in every crowd I suppose. Glass half empty? To each their own.
The Way-off Grid i go where the evidence leads me. I feed the coyotes where i live and make them sit before i feed them. They act just like this fox. i pointed out obvious evidence that you can verify by watching the video, lol. You think its the music that makes the fox go sit like a dogg in the same spot several times? Im not a glass half empty type or a cynic. I have discernment and a bullshit detector. 9/10 people are good, but i also have common sense. I play my guitar in the back yard at dusk and the coyotes show up just like this fox (they dont come as close). You want to believe in fairytales like wild animals being attracted to music, lol. Go for it. For a guy whos off the grid you dont know animals very well:)
@@Brynden-Rivers pyta
Tangarisu yea fuck them, wed have no food if they had their way. Thats probably why he made the video the way he did as he was afraid of them. Thats where we are at. Its still a really cool video either way
That fox has the life. Living free in the mountains, away from busy roads and the best view you could ever ask for. Even comes with a dude that plays banjo for you.
For the Fox I guess it’s great, but I rather like my busy roads and skyscrapers
@@bariumselenided5152 lameeee
@@Seamus_Dolan to each their own
@@bariumselenided5152 nah, you're the part of this species which is sowing the end for life on our beautiful rock.
Exactly what I was thinking, look how he's moving about taking it all in, letting that majestic tune set the scene in the background.
A man with a banjo, a friend fox and beautiful scenery. What more can we ask for ?
A fox fur coat!
Some food
A joint....
A hot dog. Anything to eat really... I'm hungry
dancing girls and a grill
Thank you both for a few moments of peace and beauty in this crazy world.
You play so beautifully, I'm not surprised even a fox loved it. I could listen to it all day...
That's true. Me too ❤
I agree!
TAKE YOUR TOP OFF!
@@kevin_kevinson I zoomed in on the red head who posted this comment. Her top is still on. It needs to be taken off.
@norolover4015 Naw, chicky pie still hasn't taken her top off.
There is just nothing better than truly communing with a creature of another species, particularly if they are ‘wild’.
You seen two Elephants with the Aussie Guy n Diggeriedoo
It seems like as the fox is listening to the banjo he/she is taking in the beautiful mountain scenery, and is joyful doing so. I am almost waiting for the fox to start dancing. The fox is so cute.
Bruh are you afraid to misgender a fox?
This is a magic moment ! and you play good banjo my friend !
How cool, loved how his ears twitched back and forth as he was listening to your music. Nature can be so wonderful. Thanks for sharing.
Really shows it was paying attention :) It likes it!
Ha, that's exactly what I noticed the second time he came back...as if he was really listening and taking the music in and maybe wondering, "could/should I stay a bit longer..." everything about this was amazing.
Imagine the fox hearing a new sound for the 1st time. Cool
This needs to be a full length tune. It's gorgeous.
It's a lot like Bruce Springsteen's "I'm on Fire" -- but not completely the same.
Agreed
Kinda similar to Ocean by John Butler but that's on a 12 string guitar
Its Hard time come again no more but a little faster
and we need it on Spotify and stuff
His ears perking up is so sweet you can see he’s curious
Can we just take a moment and appreciate the view...
Be- au- ti - fulllllllllllll!!!! Great video great playing.
